  • No information on Leah, say Police

The Police said yesterday it had no information on when Leah Sharibu would be released.

Sharibu is still being held captive by Boko Haram

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris who was in Maiduguri on Saturday told reporters that Leah Sheribu would be released on Saturday.

But Police spokesman Jimoh Moshood in a statement yesterday said: “The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to the publication on some Social Media platform and conventional media indicating that the Inspector General of Police said the last Dapchi school girl will be released soon.

“The Statement of the IGP was misunderstood and misquoted. The misunderstanding may be as a result of the already released Dapchi School girls expected back home in Yobe State today but could not arrive due to weather condition.

“The IGP could not also proceed to Dapchi because of same weather condition.

“The Force wishes the members of the public and the media disregard the purported statement as not what the IGP meant.

“The Force therefore reiterates that it has no information yet on the release of the last Dapchi school girl. This press release should be taken as the true position of the IGP’s statement.”

  • Dapchi: We don’t have information on Leah Sheribu, says Police

The Nigeria Police have denied having any information on when Leah Sheribu would be released.

Leah Sheribu was among 110 students abducted from Dapchi Government Secondary School in Yobe State on  February 19.

Sheribu is still being held captive by Boko Haram even after 104 others were released last week Wednesday.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris who was in Maiduguri on Saturday told reporters that Leah Sheribu would be released on Saturday.

His words: “I am supposed to go to Dapchi today (Saturday), but because I learnt that that schoolgirl, Leah, may be released today, that was why I had to shelve my trip to the town.

“It is very understandable that in such circumstance, one does not create too much security presence in the area in a manner that it could sabotage the efforts being made there.

“You know, I move with helicopter, and by the time I fly into the area they (Boko Haram) may think I break what the understanding may have been there. So I have to postpone the visit to Dapchi.”

But the Force in a statement in Abuja on Sunday by the Force Spokesman, ACP Jimoh Moshood denied having any information about Sheribu’s release.

The Force also said the IG was misunderstood and misquoted.

The statement reads: “The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to the publication on some Social Media platform and conventional media indicating that the Inspector General of Police said the last Dapchi school girl will be released soon.

  • Dapchi: Anxiety as expected release of abducted Christian girl, Leah, fails

Residents of Dapchi, Yobe State yesterday waited in vain for the return of Leah Sheribu, the only girl still held captive by Boko Haram following the February 19, 2018 abduction of school girls in the town.

Residents picked up information about Leah’s possible return at about noon.

Boko Haram members were said to be on their way to the town with her.

Moments after the information spread, some residents quickly went into hiding, some locked themselves up at home, while shop owners shut down.

The streets were soon deserted for fear that the Boko Haram members might have a different agenda.

Residents of Dapchi, Yobe State are expecting the release of Leah Sheribu, the only girl still being held by Boko Haram insurgents who recently kidnapped some girls in the town and returned them on Wednesday.

Some residents even went as far as posting on their Facebook pages detailing the location and the time the insurgents will arrive the expectant town.

It all turned out to become a situation of waiting for Godot as Leah was nowhere in sight.

Our correspondent who was in Dapchi observed that soldiers deployed to the town also withdrew  from security check points on the road leading into and out of the town apparently to give the ‘visitors’ a smooth entry and exit.

Police Inspector General Ibrahim Idris who was also scheduled to visit the town yesterday called it off.

He told reporters in Maiduguri that Leah was expected to be released yesterday.

His words: “I am supposed to go to Dapchi today (yesterday), but because I learnt that that schoolgirl, Leah, may be released today, that was why I had to shelve my trip to the town.

“It is very understandable that is such circumstance one does not create too much security presence in the area in a manner that it could sabotage the efforts being made there.

“You know, I move with helicopter, and by the time I fly into the area they (Boko Haram) may think I break what the understanding may have been there. So I have to postpone the visit to Dapchi.”

Leah’s father, Nathan Sheribu told our correspondent that she was yet to be returned.

He said:”I heard about the release of my daughter from the media. Many people were calling me and congratulating me but I have not seen my daughter up to the time we are talking now.”

  • Cancer screening centres for Kwara

    Cancer screening centres for Kwara

Founder of the Life Empowerment Anchors Hope (LEAH) Charity Foundation and wife of Kwara State governor Mrs Omolewa Ahmed is collaborating with some organisations to establish cervical cancer screening centres in three hospitals.

The exercise is part of the activities to commemorate the second anniversary of Governor AbdulFatah Ahmed. The centres are in Sobi Specialist Hospital, Adewole Cottage Hospital and Children Specialist Hospital.

Patients will pay only N200 for treatment.

Members of the foundation have begun an aggressive sensitisation and awareness campaign.

According to the Special Assistant to Mrs Ahmed on Administration and Strategy, Lanre Bello, the provision of health education and affordable cancer screening facilities for Kwarans was uppermost to the foundation.

“It has become obvious to us that we lose a lot of our women to the lack of appropriate education on the ways to avoid the deadly ailment and that lack of access to screening facilities deny them the opportunity for life-saving interventions which science provides. This is a tide we are determined to stop.

“We agree that death is the inevitable end of every mortal, but we are determined to stop every avoidable death and improve life expectancy in our state. This then appears to be an appropriate time for me to solicit for the assistance of Kwarans who have enjoyed the blessings of God to kindly join us in the effort to provide cancer screening facilities, especially mammogram machines. Let us join hands to prevent every avoidable mortality this silent killer imposes on our women,” he stated.

Stating some of the achievements of the foundation in the last two years, Bello said the programme had updated and equipped a maternity unit of the Alapa Cottage Hospital in Asa Local Government Area.

The LEAH Charity foundation has also created the ‘Clinic on Wheels which takes health care delivery to individual communities across the state in ambulances manned by qualified personnel.

“The programme, which takes free medical care in the form of examination, analysis, treatment and referrals to rural/semi-urban communities is a collaboration between the office of the governor’s wife, the foundation and several organisations.

“Under this programme, LEAH Charity foundation has reached out to over 30,000 people in Asa, Kaiama, Baruten, Oyun, Ilorin, Irepodun and others. Free malaria treatment, free eye glasses and sundry tests were carried out on each mission,” he added
