    Faculty hosts inaugural lecture series, intensive workshop

    The Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences at Ladoke Akintola University (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, recently held its inaugural Faculty Lecture Series at the CHS 400 Lecture Theatre.

    The event brought together key dignitaries, faculty members and guests for an enriching academic session aimed at fostering growth and collaboration within the medical sciences community.

    Present at the event were notable university leaders, including the Vice Chancellor, Prof. ROM Kalilu, represented by Prof. Alade M.O; Prof. T. Ebijuwa (Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences), Provost of the College, Prof. Adeyemi A.S; Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Prof. Mrs. Adenike Olugbenga-Bello; Dean of the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences, Prof. D.P. Oparinde; Heads of Departments, Dr. A.A. Salawu (Clinical Biochemistry) and Dr. W.A Saka (Physiology).

    Others were Dr. A.Y. Onaolapo, who was represented by Dr. O.O. Adeleye (Anatomy), Mr. Fadeyi (PRO, LAUTECH), Prof. Ayoola Akinwole (ASUU Chairman, University of Ibadan), Dr. Wehinde Olaosebikan (ASUU Chairman, Osun State University), Dr. M.O. Ojo (ASU Chairman, Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo) and the host, Dr. Afolabi Oladele, the Acting Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences.

    In his opening address, Dr. Oladele emphasised that the Faculty Lecture Series is designed to promote academic growth and facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration. He assured the audience that the event would become a tradition in the faculty. Prof. Mrs. Olugbenga-Bello and Prof. Oparinde also expressed their support for the initiative, calling it a significant milestone in the faculty’s development and encouraging staff participation.

    Prof. Alade, who represented the Vice Chancellor, said that the theme of the lecture, “Bridging Basic Sciences and Clinical Practices: Exploring How Experimental Findings Translate into Clinical Applications” is timely. He underscored the importance of collaboration between basic scientists and clinicians, advocating for stronger networks that foster medical research.

    During the event, Dr. Roland Akhigbe, who delivered a heartfelt citation for the guest speaker, Prof. M.S. Ajao, a renowned Professor of Anatomy, described Prof. Ajao as a “teacher of teachers” and a “mentor of mentors,” reflecting the esteemed reputation of the guest speaker in academia.

    Prof. M.S. Ajao, in his lecture, stressed the importance of collaboration in scientific research, stating that modern science requires collective efforts rather than single authorship. He discussed the challenges and benefits of collaboration in moving from laboratory research (“bench”) to clinical applications (“bedside”). Prof. Ajao’s compelling message highlighted the critical role of teamwork in translating experimental findings into real-world clinical solutions.

    Dr. Salawu and Dr. Saka closed the session with a vote of thanks to Prof. Ajao for his insightful lecture. They also expressed appreciation to Prof. Kalilu, represented by Prof. Alade, for his support of the event and congratulated Dr. Oladele and the entire faculty for the success of the maiden edition of the Faculty Lecture Series.

    Following the lecture series, a three-day intensive workshop was held from December 10th to 12th, 2024. The workshop, focused on the use of AI-powered tools in Genomics Data Analysis and Academic Writing, was facilitated by Dr. Oladipo Elijah Kolawole, an Associate Professor at the University of Birmingham, UK, and Adeleke University, Ede, Nigeria. The workshop provided participants with hands-on experience and practical skills to integrate cutting-edge technologies into their academic and research work.

    Ladoke Akintola University, renowned for its commitment to IT-driven innovations, continues to be at the forefront of academic excellence in Nigeria. This year, five members of the university were included in the prestigious Top 2% global scientists list by Stanford University and Elsevier B.V., further solidifying LAUTECH’s reputation for outstanding contributions to global research.

    With these significant events, the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences has set a high standard for academic excellence, collaboration, and innovation, ensuring that the university remains a leader in advancing knowledge and research in the medical sciences.

    Experts task FG on tech as Catholic Brothers hold lecture

    The need for the government to embrace technology and remove bottlenecks that stifle the advancement of small-scale businesses was the focus of discussion at the 20th yearly Lecture/29th anniversary of the Catholic Brothers United (CBU), held recently at St. Agnes Parish, Maryland, in Lagos.

    The event tagged: ‘Entrepreneurship Drive: A Tool for Mitigating Unemployment for National Growth,’ had industry experts, government officials, entrepreneurs, and clerics, among others.

    Speaking at the event, the former Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of EcoBank Nigeria, Patrick Akinwuntan said that with Nigeria housing over 40 million registered businesses, and its Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) , it has the capacity to eradicate unemployment and poverty in Nigeria when leveraged and fully supported.

    He wondered why the sector has not fully grown to harness its potential and enable it to play its rightful role.

    “The Nigeria I grew up in demonstrated enviable entrepreneurial DNA and potential to rule the world. The nature of pre-1990 entrepreneurs was that their business created an eco-system of other smaller and medium-sized businesses that generated employment, developed skills, connected people of different tribes, and engendered real economic growth.”

    Bishop Kukah for First News newspaper lecture

    • Diri, Dickson, others to grace event 

    Catholic Bishop of the Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Kukah, will deliver the First News newspaper annual national public lecture to hold on November 3 in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.

    The lecture is to mark the online paper’s third anniversary. 

    The annual public lecture, with the theme ‘The Nigerian Question: Survival of the Federation in the Throes of Increasing Economic Challenges’, will hold at the Harold Dappa Biriye Conference Centre, Onopa Villas, Yenagoa, at 10am.

    Bishop Kukah will double as the Special Guest and Keynote Speaker.

    Governor Douye Diri and his predecessor Senator Seriake Dickson, are also expected at the lecture.

    Highlight of the event will be the conferment of the FIRST NEWS ‘MAN OF THE YEAR’ award on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike.

    The keynote speaker is David Parrish, a renowned speaker, trainer and business adviser, who has worked in over 60 countries. 

    While Dickson will Chair the occasion, Diri is the Special Guest of Honour. 

    Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku is a Special Guest and Platinum Sponsor of the public lecture, alongside the Bayelsa State government. 

    Also, former Interim Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Col. Milland Dikio will be the Lead Panelist. He will be supported by Dr Matthew Ayibakuro, Governance Adviser, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

  • Club holds lecture on breast cancer

    A philanthropic organisation, Ultimate Circle Club, will, tomorrow hold a lecture on breast cancer.

    With the theme: “Breast cancer: scourge of womanhood”, it holds at Westown Hotel, Ikeja in Lagos. The lecture is part of activities to mark the club’s 30th anniversary.

    A statement by Chairman of the Anniversary Committee Dr. Olawale Oduwole said: “Breast cancer has become a major health challenge in Africa and Nigeria, such that there is no amount of lecture, training, education and awareness that can be enough.

    “Chairman of the event is Prof. Chris Bode of Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH); Prof. SNC Anyanwu is the guest lecturer.  The special guest of honour is Senator Gbenga Ashafa.”

     

  • Omatseye, Clarke for lecture

    Chairman of the Editorial Board of The Nation, Mr.Sam Omatseye, and Tim Clarke, of the University of Lancaster, United Kingdom, are to deliver the convocation lecture of the Igbinedion University, Okada.

    Omatseye would speak on “Epistocracy and the Challenges of Knowledge Democracy”, on Friday.

    Clarke would speak on “Creating an African Academic Network to Promote Regional and Political Integration in Africa” on Thursday.

    Vice-Chancellor Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye, who spoke yesterday at a pre- convocation press briefing at Okada, said a former President of Ghana, Mr. John Mahama Dramani, Oba of Iwo land, Oba Rasheed Adewale Akanbi and Edo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, would be honoured.

     

  • Grail Movement holds Easter lecture

    “Make Good Use of your Time on Earth” is the topic of this year’s Easter public lecture being organized by Grail Movement Nigeria.

    The lecture, billed for 4.00 pm on Sunday, April 1, is part of a yearly series to commemorate the work of salvation and redemption by Jesus Christ in bringing the Word of God to erring humanity, although crucified for it.

    It will hold at the Assembly Hall, Grailland, Iju Hills, behind Iju Water Works.

    Based on the epic spiritual work: In the Light of Truth: The Grail Message, written by Abd-ru-shin, this year’s lecture will, according to a statement by the organizers, address the failure of mankind to attain to spiritual development as willed by the Almighty Creator, despite immense help and enlightenment sent over the millennia and the huge sacrifice by Christ.

    It will afford seeking members of the public knowledge of the truth about life, existence, creation and the Almighty Creator, among other puzzling questions about the cosmos.

    The statement, signed by Mr. Yinka Fabowale, said buses will be available to convey participants to Grailland free from the following bus stops as from 1.00pm: Festac 1, Festac 2, Ipaja, Isolo, Ikorodu, Agege, Ikeja, Yaba, Sango Ota 1, Sango Ota2, Surulere, Victoria Island, Agbara 1, Agbara2, Epe and Ibafo.

    The buses will also be available to those destinations after the lecture.

    The Grail Message is a new revelation of truth that builds on past and existing spiritual teachings sent by God to enable man recognize and fulfill the purpose of existence. In its vast contents, it authoritatively and with unassailable logic explains the where, wherefores, structure and mechanism of creation, as well as the divine laws governing and regulating it, thereby demonstrating the working of God in His perfect justice and love.

  • Lecture holds for Fakeye

    The third annual lecture in honour of the Late General Leader of the Cherubim and Seraphim Movement Church, Surulere District, Lagos, Prophet Gabriel Olubunmi Fakeye, will hold on Saturday, at the Cherubim & Seraphim Movement Church, Surulere District.

    The theme of the lecture is ‘The Unity of the Spirit in the Bond of Peace – the Divine Panacea for Strong Nationhood’. The Guest Speaker is Prof. Bola Akinterinwa, director general of Nigeria Institute of International Affairs.

    Chairman of the occasion is Oba Michael Gbadebo, the Alake of Egbaland. The Special Guest of Honour is Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

  • UNILAG’s Engineering Alumni to hold lecture

    The Faculty of Engineering Alumni Association of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) will next Saturday hold its second alumni lecture at the Julius Berger Lecture Theatre of the faculty.

    The lecture, titled: Alumni Association: A Veritable Tool for Networking and Promotion of Professionalism, will be delivered by the Managing Director of Kresta Laurel Limited in Lagos, Dideolu Falobi.

    A statement by the Chairman of the association’s Board of Trustees (BoT), Dr. Oye Eribake, said the event will start at 11 a.m.

    It will also feature the inauguration of the Faculty of Engineering “Industry Advisory Board” (FE-IAB) and the annual general meeting (AGM) where new executive members will be elected.

    Dignitaries expected at the lecture include former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel, a former UNILAG Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oye Ibidapo-Obe, a former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Funso Kupolokun, the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, the Chairman of Nova Merchant Bank, Mr. Philip Oduoza, and President of Nigerian Society of Engineers, Kunle Mokuolu.

  • Omolewa to deliver lecture

    A former Nigeria Ambassador and permanent delegate to UNESCO,Professor Michael Omolewa, is  to deliver a lecture in honour of the 15th Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba Land,  Gani Adams.

    The reception is expected to have in attendance prominent Nigerians, obas and chiefs, top government officials, foreign diplomats, culture enthusiasts and media executives, among others.

    It will hold in Lagos on Friday, February  23, at the Blue Roof, Lagos Television, Ikeja.

    Omolewa’s paper is expected to dwell on the essence of the stool of Aare Ona Kakanfo in Yoruba nation.

    Omolewa facilitated the recognition of Osun Osogbo sacred grove as a world heritage site in 2005.

    In 2007, he proposed six other Nigerian sites namely Arochukwu Long Juju, Surame Cultural Landscape, Idanre Hills, Ogbunike Caves, ancient Kano City Walls and Alok Ikom Stone Monoliths for global recognition. Also, the UNESCO Category 2 Institute for African Culture and International Understanding established in Abeokuta was through his efforts.
