‘Living Legend is no political project’

IT  is becoming tougher getting a Nigerian to be honoured as a living legend because many do not meet the criteria, the project initiator, Mr Olu Ajayi, has said.

“This year, we are still searching for who deserves to be honoured as a living legend. However, we are considering notable Nigerians such as former Secretary General of Commonwealth Chief Emeka Anyaoku, Emeritus Bishop of Lagos Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie; General Overseer of Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, among others,”, he said.

Ajayi, who spoke to Arts Writers at his Onikan Studio in Lagos, said the choice is not influenced by political considerations but mainly by the positive contributions of the selected personality  to Nigeria. He said that Living Legend project does not consider any political balancing in the choice of legends to be honoured.  He stressed that the project started in 2008 to ‘record in our time, those that we encountered and who impacted and contributed to the growth of the society and humanity’.

He noted that a coffee table-book containing all the drawings and paintings as well as contributions from art historians and scholars would be published soon. Past legends documented are Omo N’Oba Nedo Uku Akpolokpolo, Erediauwa Oba of Benin; Prof. Yusuf Grillo; Prof. Wole Soyinka; Prof. Bruce Onobrakpeya, Prof. John Pepper Clark and General Yakubu Gowon.

According to Ajayi, his studio is working with some Nigerian artists in Diaspora for a painting workshop as part of activities to keep the artists community vibrant and productive. He, however, lamented the lack of proper museum of modern art in the country saying it is high time politicians addressed the fundamental issues challenging the culture sector. This dearth of relevant infrastructure in the sector, he said, has denied artists adequate space to showcase their works of art, which would have impacted on the tourism growth.

“This will serve as a focal point to generate employment, enhance education opportunity for the youths and promotion of tourism destinations. Another aspect is the provision of artists with seed money to grow their creative industry. The creation of Artists District for the development of a robust sector is not out of place,” he said.

He blamed lack of political will on the part of government not to appreciate the relevance of arts to national development. He noted that it is a misnomer for people to think art is for the elites, adding that a visit to a modern museum provides inspiration and kills boredom.

Ajayi said the seeming low patronage of art by most people is a function of balancing up economic reality.

Ajayi said that patronage of visual arts has improved but not yet at the level ‘we hope to reach’. “There are more private art galleries, growing army of collectors and more exhibitions. Art collection is no more diplomats’ dominated. However, art is still a luxury item to many,’’ he said.

  • Moemeke, a legend

it was William Shakespeare who said, “When beggars die,  there is no comet seen. But the heavens themselves blaze forth at the death of a prince.” I was out of town on assignment, when Mr. I S Moemeke, the Lintas boss joined his ancestors. I was therefore not privileged to observe how the heavens blazed in the coming home of one of their own. Shakespeare did not make any mistake, for such an honour is reserved for deserving citizens of our common humanity. Life is a stage.  Everyone is bound to come in and play and at the end of the short span exit. Death is a necessary end. It is a price, we mortals must pay, no matter how we may try to wish it away. One day, it is over! The glory of our existence here is this: some of us might play and on leaving, leave heavy foot prints on the sands of time.

That of course is the true mark of our life on earth. Mr. I S Moemeke, our brother, uncle, father,  boss, friend, collegue and partner came to this our chequered world; saw and conquered. He came, saw and conquered! The battle is now for us, he left behind to consummate, in the light of truth. It was the ant who was telling her children, one cool evening, “Look sons, understand this: the moment truth is no longer plausible, anarchy is looming. “Here comes a man who in his life sojourn depended on truth. He was a dogged fighter and believer of truth. Nothing could sway him from the path of truth. He believed that nothing is worth fighting for, as long as truth is missing!

As a young chap, our part crossed in my secondary school days.  As an aspiring writer,  the late business mogul, administrator par excellence, enigma, sage,  a man of peace, candour and ardour, saw a piece of my writing and provided the ladder, the anchor , for me to climb and continue climbing the literary space.  That encounter with the great man had produced great works in literature and added to the pool of human learning. During my senior secondary days, as a member of The Association Of Nigerian Authors, Delta State Chapter, I joined other literary minds in the State to produce a literary master piece; RUMBLING CREEKS OF NIGER DELTA,           which is being used today in some literary arts departments in Nigerian universities and Abroad. My humble self used it in my under graduate class. Imagine that! Again, my novel, THE MISSING GIRL,  is among the one hundred listed books in Australia.

In the list, MISSING GIRL is third in Africa. THING FALL APART by Achebe is number one while HALF OF A YELLOW SUN by Adiche is number two.  In Indonesia, a typical moslem country, my name Sunday Igwebuike is listed among THE WORLD FAMOUS PERSONALITIES. Can you beat that? We may mourn at this juncture,  but every moment of his life here on earth is worthy of celebration. We hope and pray that the legacy he left behind lives on. We also pray for the children who are finding it hard to believe the passing on of their beloved dad to take heart. They should not rest on their oars. If there is any tree to climb,  a river to cross, a mountain to surmount, they should not be found wanting. Adieu baba! Sleep on in the bosom of your maker! Rest! BON VOYAGE!

Music, comedy at Legend Taste And Tell show

The ancient city of Benin, Edo State, came alive recently, with popular singer, Terry G, leading the line-up of artistes contracted to add excitement to Nigerian Breweries’ brand activation show tagged, Legend Extra Stout ‘Taste And Tell’.

Ever the entertainer, the Akpako master apparently came prepared to thrill the crowd that thronged the Playhouse Events Centre Benin as he

Doling out tunes from his repertoire of popular songs, the Akpako master connected well with the crowd that thronged the Playhouse Events Centre, adding showmanship to the event with his his trademark bell. However it was not all about the entertainers. The audience took the centre stage in the Legend ‘Taste and Win’ Game. Interested tasters were randomly selected from the crowd to identify which of the glasses contained the Real Stout. • Honours for the legend

    Honours for the legend

Nigeria’s image takes a leap today as the University of London bestow the Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) on legal luminary, educationist and philanthropist, Chief Afe Babalola  during its 2015 graduation ceremony at the Barbican Centre, London.

Chief Babalola, arguably this country’s most erudite legal practitioner, is the first African to be so honored by the university with a doctorate degree in Law after the iconic Nelson Mandela (Doctor of Science, Economics) in 1996 and Archbishop Desmond Tutu (Doctor of Divinity) 2008. Predictably, eminent Nigerians have reacted profusely on what they regard as a silver lining in the country’s cloud of adversities and contradictions.

Chief Wole Olanipekun, a senior advocate, described the award as recognition of Aare Babalola’s “contributions and undiminished input to humanity, particularly the legal profession in Nigeria”. In his estimation, the honor is “a departure from the depressing and discomforting news oozing out of Nigeria in very recent times; the proverbial sweetness that emerges at the dusk of the bitter leaf.”

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke, a senior advocate, regards the award as the recognition of Chief Babalola’s “outstanding achievements and meritorious service to humanity”, even as he promised to attend the conferment ceremony today.

Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko believes that the university was persuaded by “those sterling qualities – those strides on the sands of time and those impactful contributions to legal education and the world of knowledge” recorded by the Octogenarian.

Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice Munta Abimbola, said the award is an honor long deserved by reason of the recipient’s contribution to the development of the Law. “The input has no match not only in Nigeria but also anywhere in the world. It is a merit well deserved in view of the outstanding achievements which admittedly is an unparalleled and exceptional service to Nigeria and mankind,” he wrote in a letter.

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi 111, who is attending the London event, described the award as recognition of Chief Babalola’s ‘eminence and distinction’. In an effusive oration, the royal father wrote: “Aare, you remain an African of honor and distinction, a rare breed and a first class achiever. Your long list of achievements and philanthropy is legendary, quite commendable and worthy of emulation by all well meaning African leaders.”

The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, eulogized Chief Babalola’s erudition as a lawyer, and described the award as a “prestigious honor”. The retired jurist wrote: “I am in a position to adjudge you as a very outstanding legal luminary and a colossus in legal matters. Your over-half a century legal practice has been very eventful, noteworthy and commendable.”

Ohinoyi Ebira, Dr.  Ado Ibrahim Atta 111, described Chief Babalola as a Nigerian who has been laboring selflessly for social, educational and economic well being of today, and has planted a growing institutional Iroko for Nigeria’s tomorrow, thereby establishing fame and virtue universally.”

For more than five decades, Aare Afe Babalola has dedicated himself to hard work; more hard work with a determination to succeed and excel. Now a grand old man at 84, he personifies a rare role model deep in self- discipline; one who brims with passion, the pursuit of excellence and a commitment to give back to humanity.

The legal luminary, unarguably one of the finest in this clime, has left an indelible mark on legal education and practice. He has made huge fortunes legitimately, but he has chosen to stake all his earnings and work himself to near frenzy, striving to leave a legacy for humanity. And when many expect his energy to wane, the legendary Afe seems unwilling to slow down.

The Vice Chancellor, University of London, Sir Adrian Smith, responding to a mail said: “We are indeed delighted that Chief Afe Babalola will be accepting the honorary degree from the University of London because he has an exceptional record in both his personal achievements and in the difference he has made to others, particularly in the legal profession in Nigeria.”

Undoubtedly, Aare Babalola made his name and fortune from legal practice; but visit Ado-Ekiti to see the breath-taking strides of one individual who by sheer determination has become a colossus recognised at home and abroad. A fitting testimony to his industry and diligence is the sprawling university built on 130 hectares.

The Afe Babalola University, ABUAD, was constructed within eight months. It admitted its pioneer students, 240 of them, in January 2010. Now there are 6,200 students.

Quite imposing, fully air-conditioned with state-of-art facilities, the university has residence for all students and teachers. Presently, there are five college buildings equipped with modern teaching facilities including e-learning platform, electronic boards, virtual library and ICT centre with 3,000 desktop computers, all connected to the internet. ABUAD recently commenced post-graduate programmes.

What is the secret for this fast pace of development? The answer is deeply rooted in the persona and vision of its founder.

After obtaining the primary six school certificate, Aare Afe Babalola never had the benefit of attending an institution of higher learning. By private study he went ahead to earn two degrees in Economics and Law, both from the University of London. At various times he was a pupil teacher, a secondary school teacher, vice principal, university lecturer and administrator. His record at the University of Lagos will remain indelible. As pro-chancellor and chairman of the governing council between 2002 and 2007, Chief Babalola returned UNILAG to the part of sanity.

Aare Babalola is a man with a passion for excellence, humanitarian services, generosity and dedication to service. He is a philanthropist and a revered legal icon; a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Doctor of Letters, Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Commander of the Order of Niger, former Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Lagos, former Chairman of the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, Winner of the best Pro-Chancellor award in 2005 and 2006, Winner of Queen Victoria Commemorative Award, Socrates Award of European Business Assembly in Oxford, UK and member of Rector of Europe.

In his autobiography, Impossibility Made Possible, Aare Babalola describes himself as a self-made man who “is proud of the qualitative primary education” he had.

He is convinced that it was the high quality of instructions he received at the primary school that laid the foundation for his educational achievements. He is unhappy that such quality of education is rare in most Nigerian schools today.

To quote the legal icon, “this development and my experience of dwindling qualities on standard of education in University of Lagos provided the urgent need to establish a first class university to serve as a benchmark for other universities.”

In fulfillment of the humanitarian philosophy of its founder, no fewer than 250 students of ABUAD are presently enjoying some form of bursary at the institution. All indigent and very brilliant students are eligible for this rare gesture from a man who appreciates the value of education. Besides awarding full scholarship to brilliant students, loans and bursaries are available for the less-privileged and physically challenged students.

For seven years from 2000, Aare Babalola was pro-chancellor at the University of Lagos. In 2005 and 2006 he was named the best pro-chancellor by the Federal Government, which, in a white paper issued in 2003 on the Visitation Panel to UNILAG, said, inter alia: “His leadership style was exemplary. The leadership style of his council was characterized by optimum time and resources utilization and a good team system”.

Throughout his tenure at UNILAG, Chief Babalola paid his hotel bills and donated his sitting allowances to the university endowment fund. He donated a 500-seater lecture theater to the institution and established a robust endowment scholarship system for indigent students.

In the words of Chief Olanipekun, Aare Afe Babalola is indeed “a prophet inundated with honors at home and showered with encomiums and recognition abroad.” The  rare Man for All Seasons.

  • Legend promo winners relish Dubai shopping experience

Legend promo winners relish Dubai shopping experience

As their plane touched down, some winners of the Legend Extra Stout promo who were travelling for the first time, marvelled at the electrifying ambience of Dubai, the most visited city in the United Arab Emirate (UAE).

With its sprawling architectural edifice, malls and skyscrapers, there is no better way to connect consumers than an all-expense-paid trip to world tourist destination.

However, from the experiences shared by the winners of the Legend Extra Stout Real Deal National Promo, the trip to Dubai has deepened their affinity with the Legend Extra Stout brand, no doubt.

In the heart at the desert safari, they visited various exciting spots. Their first touch-point was the Falcon spot where they learnt a few things about the Falcon from an expert Falconer who also entertained them with exciting Falcon displays. Next was the Sunset photo Spot where they had fun running up and down the dunes, taking photographs and watching the sun set in the middle of the Arabian Desert.

A bus driver in Ibadan, Oyo State, Stephen Ajayi, said the trip to Dubai was not all about the shopping or the N1million worth shopping spree given to them by Nigerian Breweries but the new experience the promo has given him which he never dreamt of.

“I have never owned an international passport before. I have never travelled by air in my life not to talk of leaving the shores Nigeria. But Legend has made it all happen to me free. I value the exposure and experience more than the items I picked,” he said.

He was part of the second set of winners of Legend Extra Stout on-going Real Deal National Consumer Promo, to Dubai.

The new set emerged at various draws a fortnight ago and was flown to Dubai to shop for items worth N1 million in one of Dubai’s biggest malls.

A carpenter Olusegun Ogunbiade, who emerged a lucky winner from Port Harcourt, described the experience as enlightening. “Legend has elevated my thinking. I now have a better estimation of myself. That something I never imagined will come within my reach. Legend has made possible free. It has been a VIP treatment right from my base in Port Harcourt down to Dubai,” he said.

A civil servant from Delta State, Emmanuel Ogunje, who went with his wife, said he would not forget the promo in a hurry. For him, it was a case of killing two birds with one stone. “This is one experience I will remember for a long time. First, it helped me overcome the fear for travelling by air and secondly, it gave my wife whom I took along, the opportunity to explore Dubai for the business she has always wanted to go into.”

Some of the winners said if the N1million had been given to them, it wouldn’t have been better. Chinonyerem Eleleme, a teacher, said he would sell some of the goods he bought in Dubai. He plans to sell some of the things that he bought to raise money to start his own small business.

A 21-year-old student of the Federal Polytechnic, Okoh Jephtha Chukwuoti, also expressed gratitude to Legend Extra Stout for giving him the his first-time travelling experience, adding that it would sustain his bond with the Legend brand.

During the visit, the winners also visited the Camel Spot where they rode on camel and capped off the day’s adventure at the Bedouin-style camp being entertained by a Belly Dancer while they enjoyed a three course Arabic dinner.

  • Celebrating foremost African legend

    Celebrating foremost African legend

THe United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Director and Country Representative, Prof Hassana Halidou has called on governments of Southwest states, corporate organisations, individuals and Yoruba in diaspora to support the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi 111, in his efforts to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of Yoruba.

In a message at the grand finale  of the second world Sango festival held in Oyo town, Oyo State, Prof Halidou said what owners of the culture do not appreciate at home are being cherished, admired and highly valued by those outside and are doing everything humanly possible to acquire it by all means and at all cost.

Represented by the National Programme Officer for Culture, Mr Ayanwale Olayanju, UNESCO ountry representative noted: ‘’The uniqueness of Oyo traditions is worthy of emulation taking for examples the respect Yoruba people have for the institutional authority, clothing and mode of dressing, the beauty of Yoruba language with its semantics, the use of proverbs and aphorism, different satires of Yoruba poems full of wisdom and philosophy that has no equal all over the world.’’

He explained that Oyo tradition is the pride of Oyo, adding that it is the main reason why the city continues to enjoy respect among the African nations and the black races in general.

“This best explained the common saying that due process is the nature of administration in Oyo. This is justice which Sango stands for. It is the practice his Imperial Majesty the Alaafin of Oyo is known for, and this is what Nigeria should be known for because where there is justice, there shall be peace and where there is peace, there  will be development and it is development everybody should be working towards to complement whatever the governments at local, state and federal levels are doing.’’

Halidou recalled that in 2005, UNESCO declared Ifa as a masterpiece of oral and intangible heritage of humanity, adding that the government of Japan in collaboration with the Federal Government contributed to the establishment of Ifa Heritage Institute located in Oyo town, with former Vice-Chancellor of the then University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, Prof Wande Abimbola as the sole sponsor since it was established in 2008.

Earler, Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola in his message stressed the importance of the preservation of culture.

The governor, who was represented by the state Commissioner for Culture, Sikiru Aiyedun, appreciated the immense contributions of the Alaafin towards renaissance of Yoruba Culture, adding that his administration would not relent in its onerous commitment to bequeathing Yoruba culture its rightful place.

‘’Certainly, a lot more work could be done if policy makers would easily and without prejudice, acknowledge the importance of culture in development. Also, there cannot be any development without a serious motivation of the people concerned,’’ he said.

Factional leader of the Oodua Peoples’ Congress (OPC), Mr Gani Adams who cautioned against the extinction of Yoruba culture, expressed worry over what he described as ‘’wholly assimilation of foreign cultures by younger generation in their lifestyles to the detriment of their invaluable customs and traditions.’’

However, another glamour was added to the just-concluded World Sango Festival, when a delegation of blacks and foreign nationals performed traditional rites in Yoruba language to the delight of invited guests.

The guests who came from Cuba, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Germany, Cameroun and South Africa but based in Brazi were led by Chief Adeola Faleye, and  Dr. Olumide Omidire, both of the Department of Linguistics and African Studies, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU).

The delegation disclosed that they made it a point of duty to visit Oyo town because of its unique place in Yorubaland in particular, and the entire black race in general.

They regarded Oyo as their original home, and that where they were living is their second home.

Specifically, they expressed their delight when they saw Oba Adeyemi 111.

For about an hour, they thrilled the guests to traditional dances and incantation of Sango praise poetry.

The delegation later presented the Alaafin with a traditional drum that has 16 different tones, the first-ever said to be presented to any monarch in Africa.

They also presented video tapes of their songs titled: Canticlces to the Alaafin.

Responding, Oba Adeyemi thanked both the UNESCO and the World Bank for showcasing attributes of Sango when he was alive.

The paramount ruler used the occasion to warn against extinction of Yoruba language, which he described as ‘’the most comprehensive and meaningful language in the universe.’’

Alaafin said: ‘’In everything, be it science, astrology, dressing, language, social sciences or even businesses, Yoruba remains the pace-setter. There  are empirical data and proven track records to show for this assertion. Oyo not only remains centrepiece of Yoruba nations world-wide, but Mecca and Vatican of the richest culture and traditions in the universe.’’

The occasion was witnessed by the Oyo-Mesi, and the Olori Oluwo Agbaye of Aborigines Ogboni Fraternity of Nigeria and Overseas, who is also the Aare-Ona Kakanfo of Ibeju-Lekki Kingdom, Aare Oladapo Olufowora.
