Leverkusen sign Quansah from Liverpool for £35m

Bayer Leverkusen have signed defender Jarell Quansah from Liverpool in a £35m deal.

The 22-year-old centre-back has joined the German Bundesliga club on a five-year contract.

Quansah was part of the England side that won the European Under-21 Championship by beating Germany in the final on Saturday.

His move is the third deal between the clubs this summer after Liverpool signed midfielder Florian Wirtz and defender Jeremie Frimpong.

Newcastle wanted to sign Quansah last summer, as part of a deal to send winger Anthony Gordon to Liverpool, but the Reds turned down the proposal.

Quansah came through the Liverpool academy and made 58 appearances for the club, scoring three goals.

He helped the Reds win the League Cup in 2024 and made 13 league appearances last season as Arne Slot’s side won the Premier League.

“He has already made an impressive impact in a Liverpool defence dominated by world-class players,” said Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes.

“With Jarell, our defence gains significant dynamism, pace and toughness in tackling, and he’s another very important building block for the future.”

Liverpool are interested in Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, amid uncertainty over Ibrahima Konate’s future.

The France centre-back has 12 months left on his contract at Anfield and is yet to agree an extension, while Joe Gomez’s future is also unclear.

Confident Leverkusen set for Bundesliga title race

Bayer Leverkusen are taking the belief gained from finishing in the top eight of the Champions League standings into the latter stages of their Bundesliga title defence.

Xabi Alonso’s men, who sit six points behind leaders Bayern Munich in second place in the German top flight, host Hoffenheim this weekend fresh from securing direct passage to the Champions League last 16 by beating Sparta Prague on Wednesday.

“That’s why we play in the Champions League – to compete at the highest level,” said Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah. “We have shown that we can compete with anyone at this level.”

Leverkusen have only lost one domestic match since the start of last season in a remarkable run.

After a sluggish start to the Bundesliga campaign, Leverkusen have powered back into contention despite last weekend’s draw with RB Leipzig, when they let a two-goal lead slip.

Bayern, who face Holstein Kiel  today, will visit Leverkusen between their two Champions League play-off round legs after missing out on a top-eight finish in Europe.

The Bavarians have not won at Leverkusen since 2021 and Alonso is yet to suffer a defeat by Bayern since taking charge.

But Tah does not expect Bayern’s packed schedule to give his team any edge in the battle for the Bundesliga.

“Bayern Munich are used to playing every three days,” he said.

Leverkusen were also boosted by the news Victor Boniface’s planned move to Saudi Arabia has fallen through, giving the defending champions extra attacking power to keep fighting on three fronts.

Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany said Wednesday “it was clear the big games would come”

Bayern have not yet added any senior players to their squad in the transfer market, which closes on Monday.

    Leverkusen’s release 120th anniversary jersey

The Bundesliga champions have gone back to where it all began with a retro black jersey closely resembling their first ever kit. Leverkusen will wear the special 120th anniversary jersey at home to Holstein Kiel on Matchday 6.

The special kit has numerous additional features designed to illustrate Leverkusen’s history. Their first ever club logo, from when they were known as Turn- und Spielverein der Farbenfabriken vorm. Friedrich Bayer & Co, is reproduced.

The red collar and golden buttons from the club’s first kit on record from 1907/08 are also recreated on the black jerseys.

British kit supplier Castore’s logo and the Barmenia sponsor logo are shown in subtle tone-on-tone colouring.

There is also an NFC chip built into the jersey below the logo on the chest. Anyone holding their smartphone over the logo can gain access to a page with exclusive content in the club’s app.

The special jersey is available from Bayer Leverkusen’s club shop for a price of €99.90 in adults’ sizes and €64.90 in children’s sizes.

Florian Wirtz and his Leverkusen team-mates including Nigeria’s duo of Victor Boniface and  Nathan Tella  will hope the jersey inspires them to a result at home to Holstein Kiel.

Champions League: Boniface’s strike earns Leverkusen win over Milan

A second half goal from Victor Boniface was enough to earn Bayer Leverkusen a 1-0 home win over AC Milan in the Champions League, giving the German side a perfect start to their campaign while the Italians are still without a point.

The only goal came six minutes after the break when Boniface fired home a rebound after Milan keeper Mike Maignan had parried a shot from Jeremie Frimpong.

It was no more than the home side deserved after an opening half in which they had the majority of possession and chances but could not find a way past Maignan, while Milan struggled to get a foothold in the game.

The goal spurred the visitors into action and they threatened to find an equaliser as they pinned Leverkusen back for long periods of the second half, but they fell to their second defeat in the opening two games of the competition.

Meanwhile, Karim Adeyemi scored a first-half hat-trick as last season’s losing finalists Borussia Dortmund hammered Celtic 7-1 in the Champions League with five goals in the opening 42 minutes.

The 80,000-strong crowd started the celebrations early at the Westfalenstadion, with Emre Can scoring from the spot in the seventh minute after Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel up-ended Jamie Gittens and was booked.

Celtic momentarily hushed the deafening Yellow Wall two minutes later when Daizen Maeda bundled in a cross from Arne Engels but Adeyemi restored the lead with a shot deflected in off Auston Trusty in the 11th.

The Germany winger made it 3-1 in the 29th  when he lashed a shot into the top corner past a diving Schmeichel, then won a 39th  minute penalty for Serhou Guirassy to tuck away and completed his hat-trick three minutes later.

Guirassy grabbed his second of the night in the 66th  and second-half substitute Felix Nmecha completed the rout in the 79th , with Celtic having Schmeichel to thank for keeping the sobering scoreline to seven.

  • BUNDESLIGA KICK-OFF: Tella tips Leverkusen for another ‘magic’ title triumph

BUNDESLIGA KICK-OFF: Tella tips Leverkusen for another ‘magic’ title triumph

Bayer Leverkusen are vowing to achieve great things again this season after an unprecedented unbeaten league and cup double last campaign.

Leverkusen kick off the 2024-25 Bundesliga campaign at local rivals Borussia Mönchengladbach today.

Xabi Alonso’s side have been tipped by many to become the first side other than Bayern Munich to win back-to-back German top-flight titles since Jurgen Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund in 2012.

While Bayern have spent big and Dortmund and RB Leipzig have had impressive summers, Leverkusen forward Nathan Tella backed his side for another incredible season.

“There are no rules saying we can’t do any of this. It’s just down to us and how we apply ourselves in the season.”

Speaking with AFP at Leverkusen’s pre-season training camp in the Black Forest village of Donaueschingen, Tella said: “There’s no reason why we can’t defend the title”.

“We’ve seen Bayern do it for so many years. Why can’t we do something similar to that?

“There’s no limit to what we can achieve. Last year, no-one believed in us and at the end of the season we were undefeated champions.

“Being a part of this team, anything is possible.”

Tella’s bullish statements are a far cry from even a season ago, when the club was still derided as ‘Neverkusen’ for failing to win a league title despite five second-place finishes.

Leverkusen’s 2024-25 season started in now familiar fashion.

In Saturday’s Super Cup against last year’s runners-up Stuttgart, striker Patrik Schick scored an 88th -minute equaliser before Leverkusen won on penalties.

Much of Leverkusen’s success last season, including their run to the Europa League final, was set up by late goals from a side who did not know they were beaten.

Leverkusen’s summer training base was at the same venue from where launched Spain’s triumphant Euro 2024 campaign just a month earlier.

Asked if Leverkusen could benefit from a bit of La Roja’s magic this season, Tella said his side did not need any external assistance.

“No, we have our own magic to be fair. Last season, it was him,” Tella said, pointing at Leverkusen’s midfield maestro Florian Wirtz.

Despite attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, Leverkusen held onto Wirtz this summer, as well as the remainder of their squad.

Perhaps most importantly, coach Alonso has committed to stay on for at least another season despite interest from several of his former clubs including European giants Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern.

Xhaka told AFP success motivated Alonso’s decision to stay.

“He wants to prove that we can do it again. This was something for the players, that he believes in this team, trusts that this team can do the same thing this year as well.

Financial advantages aside, Bayern’s long dominance of the Bundesliga has been underpinned by a constant desire to get better, even when the club is already at the top.

Despite a barnstorming campaign where the club broke through for their first Bundesliga title, Leverkusen were not resting on their laurels.

Alonso, a serial winner during his playing career, set the tone in pre-season training, saying last year’s incredible level “probably wouldn’t be enough” this season.

“We have many fundamentals,” the coach said. “We need to add something, update it, incorporate other elements. We have to evolve and improve.”

Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka, who like Tella arrived in Leverkusen from England before last season, was Alonso’s voice on the pitch, playing more minutes than any other outfield player last season.

“I agree with the coach because if there’s one guy who knows, it’s him. If you want to improve year after year, you have to improve year by year,” Xhaka told AFP.

“You need to not just look at the good things, but the bad things as well.”

Tella arrived in Leverkusen after a 17-goal season as Burnley were promoted to the Premier League.

He scored seven and assisted six as Leverkusen pursued a remarkable treble, the London-born winger winning a Nigeria call-up in the process.

Tella said the club had set their sights on improvement.

“It’s something we want to aspire to. The coach said we’re not at that level yet. That means we have something to work towards to improve.

“The standards we set last year were so high, almost unbelievable. We want to get close to it again, if not beat those standards.”

    To face Atalanta May 22

Bayer Leverkusen scored two goals against Roma to maintain their incredible unbeaten run this season.

Xabi Alonso’s side were staring down the barrel of a first defeat after falling to two goals behind as the Italian giants levelled the aggregate score at 2-2 following their defeat to the German champions last week.

Still, two late strikes were not only enough to ensure their stunning run of form goes on for at least another game, it saw them reach the Europa League final.

Meanwhile, Atalanta will battle it out with Bayer Leverkusen for glory in the Europa League final following their respective semi-final victories.

La Dea have been on fire under Gian Piero Gasperini on the European stage this term, fighting their way to the Dublin Arena for a chance at silverware. The Bergamo outfit will also fight for the Coppa Italia trophy against Juventus this month.

Atalanta topped a Europa League group containing Sporting, Sturm Graz and Rakow Czestochowa before beating Sporting CP in the Round of 16 and Liverpool in the quarterfinals, setting up a difficult semi-final tie with Olympique Marseille.

Atalanta held Marseille to a 1-1 draw at the Stade Velodrome in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final before taking a leading role in the second leg, picking up a 2-0 win to book their spot in the final.

La Dea will now face Bayer Leverkusen at the Aviva Stadium in the Europa League final on May 22nd.

Bayern win delays Leverkusen title celebrations

Bayern Munich kept Bayer Leverkusen’s Bundesliga title celebrations on hold for at least one more day as the defending champions earned victory over relegation-threatened Cologne.

England captain Harry Kane and Mathys Tel both hit the post in a frustrating first half for Bayern, who needed one point to avoid conceding the title.

But goals from Raphael Guerreiro and Thomas Muller sealed victory.

The win leaves Bayern 13 points behind Bayer Leverkusen with five games to go.

It means Xabi Alonso’s unbeaten leaders, having played one game less, will be crowned German champions for the first time with victory over Werder Bremen on Sunday (16:30 BST).

Bayern have won 11 successive top-flight titles since Borussia Dortmund’s triumph in 2011-12.

Despite 32 goals in 29 league games for England captain Kane – unable to add to his tally here by the smallest of margins – the club’s hold on the trophy looks set to end imminently.

Guerreiro fired in from 25 yards following Joshua Kimmich’s corner to the edge of the box in the 65th minute, before Muller added a late second in stoppage time as Thomas Tuchel’s side overcame strugglers Cologne, who sit second from bottom.

Boniface’s Leverkusen extend unbeaten run to 38

Florian Wirtz scored after 84 seconds as Bayer Leverkusen made it 38 games unbeaten in all competitions with a 3-2 victory in Freiburg.

Leverkusen’s seventh league win on the bounce kept them 10 points clear of serial champions Bayern Munich with eight games to play in their quest for the club’s first ever Bundesliga crown.

“It was a good performance, a deserved victory. It’s not easy to win in Freiburg but we keep going,” Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso told DAZN before praising the performance of his playmaker Wirtz. “It’s not just the goal he scored, he has a super game. He has real quality and I am very happy for his development.”

Wirtz, one of Leverkusen’s key performers this season, got things moving in style. The Germany forward cut in from the left and unleashed a perfect shot with his right foot, chalking up his seventh league goal of the season.

The early goal stunned Freiburg, who came into the game fresh from a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of West Ham in the Europa League, with Leverkusen to face the Londoners in the quarter-final of the competition next month.

Freiburg responded against the run of play though, with Japan forward Ritsu Doan exchanging passes neatly with Lucas Hoeler to drill a low shot beyond the unsighted Lukas Hradecky.

Leverkusen put their noses back in front before half-time though, with Adam Hlozek tapping into an empty net after a mistake by Freiburg keeper Noah Atubolu.

Yannik Keitel pulled one back for Freiburg but the damage was already done, leaving the hosts in ninth and with European qualification slipping away.
