  • We ‘re out to discover talents — LG boss

The Chairman of the Orile Agege Local Government, Hon. Johnson Sunday Babatunde, has called on all local government councils across the country to search out young talents in their various areas because, according to him, “it is our duty as government officials to do so.”

“Government,” he said, “has the capacity and wherewithal to research out these hidden talents, nurture them and guide them towards growth in order that when such talents are developed, they could then be properly guided to contribute to the overall development of the country.”

The Chairman revealed this at the maiden edition of the Inter Schools Sports Competition hosted by the Association For Formidable Educational Development (AFED), Orile Agege Chapter at the NYSC Camp football pitch in the Agege area of Lagos.

The Chairman said he was most impressed by the high turnout of private and public schools for the competition and that he could see from the various sporting activities that took place that afternoon that Nigeria as a country is bristling with young talents, silently crying out to be nurtured and developed.

He promised to make available financial resources and “any other needed support” to encourage the talents he had spotted at the various sporting activities that took place at the event.

“This is how people like Ilerika and Mary Onyali of those days emerged,” he added.

The Chairman of Orile Agege AFED Chapter, Mr. Taiwo Olasunkanmi, told newsmen at the sporting event that the theme of the day was carefully selected that is ‘Making of a star.’

“Part of the reasons we are hosting this competition is to search and discover the sporting stars amongst our children. Now that they are young, this is the best time to identify and pick them and to start training them in the right direction.

“Again it is a good thing to bring these schools together like this because some of these schools cannot afford to host their schools’ inter-house sports. So this helps them to have annual inter-house sports without spending much and still engage the children in a competitive spirit,” Olasunkanmi said.

  • LG boss builds customary court, rehabilitates roads

Chairman of Surulere Local Government, Hon. Tajudeen Ajide, has made bold his promise to touch the lives of indigenes following the rehabilitation of two roads in Oyekan and Small London areas of Surulere. He has also begun construction of new customary court in Surulere I Magisterial district, of Lagos State. A resident and shop owner, in Oyekan Street, Modupeoluwa Whesu, said the road used to be dusty and filled with pot holes making the residents to suffer in mucky waters whenever it rained.

Similarly, Molade Kazeem, a carpenter who resides at the Low-Cost Housing Estate, popularly called Small London, at Babajide area of Surulere, hailed the efforts of the local council.

“We are happy about the road rehabilitation. Also, street lights are being fixed and pot holes on other roads have been filled. We don’t experience traffic anymore,” he said.

When contacted, Ajide informed that he has great plans for Surulere residents. “I am only doing my job. I am 100 percent focused on touching the lives of my people. We are going to all areas that need our attention and that is why we have met with the CDAs and they have told us what they want. We have empowered them too.”

On the customary court, he added, “our preoccupation is to deliver legacy projects residents and the current local government administration would be proud of. The old structure was in such a terrible state that it posed danger to the lives of those working there.

The ceilings had caved in and the roots of a tree planted on the premises were sprouting inside the main building. So, we thought it is important to build a befitting customary court.”

  • Confusion in Anambra over suspension of LG boss

Confusion in Anambra over suspension of LG boss

There is tension in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra state following the indefinite suspension of the  council chairman, John Onyeakpa, by the councilors over allegations of misconduct and poor performance among others. Already, Anambra state police command had deployed more security operatives to the area to maintain law and order.

Before his controversial suspension, the chairman was served with an impeachment notice on July 2nd, 2015. In reaction to the move by the legislators, Onyeakpa dragged the Councillors and the Chief Judge of the state to court, seeking discontinuation of the impeachment process. Specifically, the LG boss urged the Court to stop the Chief Judge from setting up a panel to investigate him.

But in a surprise statement on Friday at Umunze headquarters of the council area, after their sitting, the Councilors announced the indefinite suspension of the Chairman and directed him to hand over the affairs of the council to his deputy, Sir Emma Enwere, within 24 hours.

According to reports, the motion for his suspension was moved by the leader of the house, Sir Chukwudi Okwuma, and was supported by all the 15 legislators present out of the 18 member house.

Okwuma alleged that the chairman had crippled the activities of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the council area and had equally accused Governor Obiano of sponsoring the councilors to impeach him at all cost. Also, chairman information and security, Hyginus Umeaka alleged that the chairman had turned the council area into a private business, while Mr. Stanistus Nnaka accused him of being stubborn.

But there is confusion over the state of things in the council as Onyeakpa has vowed to resist all attempts to wrongly and forcefully remove him from office. Although he could not be reached for his reaction, a close aide of the embattled LG boss said it is unlikely that Onyeakpa will give up without a fight.

“Don’t forget the matter is in court already. I am sure the Chairman will seek justice till the very end. He will not succumb to this extra judicial act by the councillors. He will resist them,” the aide said.
