  • Librarian to youths: read

    OYO State  chapter of the Nigeria Library Association (NLA)chairman Dr Olatunji Olaojo has appealed to youths to develop themselves by reading.

    He gave the charge plea when  The NLA’s new executives visited the Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology in Igboora.

    The chairman called on people to make use of libraries, as there are professionals to guide them there.

    He said the library contributes to people’s advancement in life and called on government at all levels to increase the budgetary provisions for libraries.

    Olaojo who described his visit to the college as a homecoming, praised its Provost Prof Gbemiga Adewale for his support. He described Adewale as a friend of the library for his support to NLA members in his institution  and for the payment of institutional dues to the association.

    He solicited for more support from the Provost and other tertiary institutions in the state.

    Responding, Adewale urged Olaojo to work towards ensuring that tertiary and secondary institutions have befitting libraries.

    He should also work towards encouraging good reading culture in Nigeria.

    The NLA chairman and his executives also visited the Ibarapa Polytechnic, Eruwa, Oyo State College of Education, Lanlate; The Polytechnic, Ibadan; Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso; LAUTECH Teaching hospital, Osogbo; and other tertiary institutions in the state.

  • FUTA appoints librarian

    The Council of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) has appointed Dr. Belau Olatunde Gbadamosi as the new University Librarian with effect from August 1, 2016.

    Gbadamosi, a Chartered Librarian, has a doctorate in Library and Information Studies as well as a Bachelor in Education and a Master’s in Library Studies (MLS) all from the University of Ibadan.

    He started his career at the Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Lanlate Campus, Oyo State in 1991 and rose through the ranks to become the College Librarian in 2010.

    He joined Fountain University, Osogbo, Osun State in September 2012 as the University Librarian before his recent appointment by FUTA.

    Gbadamosi, a member of the Nigerian Library Association (NLA) and Member, Library Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN) has a lot of publications in both International and local Journals to his credit.

    He has participated in several academic conferences and workshops locally and internationally

    Gbadamosi, 58, is married with children.

    Librarian gets UNESCO appointment

    The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has appointed the Registrar/Chief Executive Officers of Librarians’ Registration Council of Nigeria, Dr Victoria Okojie, as a member of the International Advisory Committee of the Memory of the World Programme.

    UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme is an international initiative launched to safeguard the documentary heritage of humanity against collective amnesia, neglect, the ravages of time and climatic conditions, and willful and deliberate destruction. It is administered by a body known as the International Advisory Committee (IAC) whose 14 members are appointed by the UNESCO Director-General.

    In a statement, LRCN’s Chief Information and Protocol Officer, Mrs Ngozi Oboh, noted that Dr Okojie’s appointment came as a result of her in-depth expertise in the field of safeguarding documentary heritage, taking into account a fair geographical representation.

    Dr Okojie’s appointment was conveyed via an e-mail dated June 22, 2015 and signed by Iskra Panevska of the UNESCO Memory of the World Knowledge Societies Division, Communications and Information Sector.

    Reacting to the news, Dr Okojie said it was a great honour to be recognised by a United Nations Agency, the UNESCO.

    “It is a clear signal that our efforts are gradually gaining global recognition. The task sounds interesting and being a Nigerian, I am optimistic that some of our national monuments and cultural heritage will qualify to be listed in the Memory of the World International Register,” she said.

    Dr Okojie has served as the President of Nigerian Library Association; Advisor in Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Global Library Committee and is a Fellow of the United States of America International Visitor Leadership Programme.

    She is the Chair, International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) Africa Section and an Associate of IFLA International Leaders Programme.

  • Honour for UNN librarian

    Members of the League of Democratic Students (LEADS), a students’ body in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), have honoured the university Librarian, Prof Charles Omekwu, with an award of excellence.

    The award was tagged: “Icon of Nation Building Through Library and Information Science”. The Librarian was honoured as a result of his dedication to students’ empowerment, as well as his commitment to the realisation of the world-class aspiration of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Library, UNN.

    LEADS Nigeria, an umbrella body for democratic students’unions in Africa, was established in 1985 at the Bayero University, Kano (BUK) with the objectives of sensitising its members on democratic practices and enthroning the ideal culture of democracy in campuses.

    Presenting the award, President of the group, Morgan Ochekwu, said that Prof Omekwu was selected for the award based on his outstanding contribution to education in Nigeria by promoting the growth of the library and using his position to guide students to achieve their academic aspirations.

    “Prof Omekwu has made his marks; he has driven UNN library to a high standard that Nigerians can be proud of,” Morgan said.

    Morgan, a student of the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUT MINNA), called on government at all levels to pay attention to the development of libraries in the country, saying the facility remained central to the realisation of President Goodluck Jonathan’s Transformation Agenda in the education sector.

    Reacting, Prof Omekwu expressed gratitude to the group for the honour, commending the efforts of the association in pursuing democratic ideals. The librarian remarked that he brought passion and dedication to his work, knowing that his effort would make lasting impression on the people he serves.
