    LILIAN AMAH’S NOVEL FOR ADAPTATION

FOLLOWING a global trait, Nigerian books are poised to start being adapted into movies. Popular Nollywood actress, producer and author, Lilian Amah Aluko, who is eyeing the presidency of the Association of Movie Producers (AMP), disclosed this recently while intimating journalists of her ambition.

In Hollywood, many movies have their origins from books. While Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel, Half of a Yellow Sun, has been adapted and there are ongoing efforts to adapt her recent novel, Americanah. However, the situation is quite different from what obtains in Nollywood.

Lilian, who is also an author, intends to revamp the situation, if given the mandate. In fact, the actress is walking the talk with her recent novel, Dreams of Yesterday, which was published in May, 2015. The book explores the story of Captain Lekan Lawson who finds and loses love after losing his memory during the Nigeria/Biafra civil war.

“Charity they say begins at home,” said Lilian who is just back from attending a training program at University of California and Hollywood.

“As my final pitch for my training, I pitched my book. And I’m very proud to say that the panel, who were there, very high profile writers and producers in Hollywood, were very impressed. They were so impressed that the Dean, Barbara Boyle, asked for a copy of the book. So that is in the works.

“Once I have done my own adaptation, I’m going to encourage my colleagues; ‘When looking for stories, looking inward. The African Writers Series alone, if people go into that, buy the rights and then get scriptwriters to screenplay it. Stories are there. So, we don’t have to keep recycling old stories,” she adds.

According to Lilian who is also a member of Actors Guild of Nigeria, her involvement in guild politics is to seek ways to move Nollywood to more enviable heights.

    Lilian Amah eyes AMP presidency

In a bid to take the Association of Movie Producers, AMP, to greater heights, prominent actress, producer and author, Lilian Amah Aluko, has indicated interest to contest the presidency of the association.

Lilian, a Masters Degree graduate of English of the University of Lagos, made her intention known at a press conference in Lagos on Sunday.

Citing reasons on why she decided to join the presidency race, Lilian, who recently came back from a training  with her colleagues at the University of California and Hollywood, said that there is a disconnect in the Nigerian movie industry which ought not to be.

“While there, we discovered that they have very active guilds,” said Lilian who is also a member of the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria.

“You cannot go into America and start carrying camera and doing anything. You must contact the gChioma Udeuild in charge. The scriptwriter is protected by the Scriptwriters’ Guild. Producers are protected by the Producers’ Guild. They have very string unions, they have rules and regulations. What we have in Nollywood, as I discovered in my years as Vice President, is that Nollywood is an all-comer’s affair. Because of that and of course, the piracy situation, we find that practitioners are suffering,” she said.

Lilian, who also recently authored a novel, Dreams of Yesterday, has starred in over 20 movies and several TV series and has delved into production has made her mark in the Nollywood. She said she plans to return viable programmes such as the AMP Week which was held during Obazele’s reign as president.

Already, feelers are on that she would be contesting the positon with Ralph Nwadike, a filmmaker who cut his teeth writing scripts for the National Television Authority (NTA) back in the 1980s.

In previous administrations of AMP, Lilian had served two-year tenures as Vice President twice; under the last tenure of president Paul Obazele and under the first tenure of president Zik Zulu Okafor.
