  • Israel blames Palestinians for cancellation of Argentina friendly

Israel on Wednesday blamed Palestinian pressure for Argentina’s cancellation of its World Cup  warmup against Israel, a match that had been set for contested Jerusalem.

The Palestinians accused Israel of using the fixture and the participation of Barcelona ace Lionel Messi to underpin its disputed claim to Jerusalem, which U.S. President Donald Trump recognised in 2017 as Israel’s capital in a break from international consensus.

The Israeli Embassy in Argentina confirmed the cancellation on Twitter, saying it was saddened by the news following the threats directed at the players.

The embassy expressed its hope that the players would come to Israel soon.

“The threats and provocations directed at Lionel Messi, which logically aroused the solidarity of his colleagues and fear of playing the friendly, are no strangers to the daily life of Israel’s civilian population whose sporting stars, to put it simply, have been on numerous occasions the targets of violence and attacks,” the embassy wrote.

“The friendship between Argentina and Israel, which will soon celebrate its 70th anniversary, is not about a football match. The democratic country and plural state (composed of Jews, Muslims and Christians), will always eagerly await the chance to receive one of the stars of Argentine sport.”

The match at Jerusalem’s Teddy Kollek Stadium was to be Argentina’s last before they kick off their World Cup campaign in Russia on June 16.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Argentinian President Mauricio Macri on Tuesday night to ask him to persuade the team not to cancel their visit, but a diplomatic official said the chances of salvaging the fixture were very slim as Macri can’t force the players to come to Israel.

“Macri has some influence, but it’s their decision and they’re afraid to come in the current climate,” the official added. “Israel is still pressuring them to reverse the decision.”

In a second conversation Tuesday night, Macri told Netanyahu he had no influence on the matter.

Culture and Sports Minister Miri Regev received updated from the game’s producer, Danny Ben Naim, on the efforts to reverse the Argentinean decision.

The minister was informed that since Argentina had announced their arrival for a friendly with Israel, different terror organisation had started sending messages to the players and their family members with explicit threats, as well as images and videos of children’s bodies.

Addressing claims that the Argentinean team refused to arrive because of the decision to move the game to Jerusalem, the sports minister said: “That’s nonsense which legitimizes terror and the BDS campaign.

Unfortunately, we have trojan horses in the Knesset who supporting terror.”

President Reuven Rivlin said in response to the cancellation, “This really is a sad morning for the fans, including some of my grandchildren, but there are values that are even bigger than Messi.

“I’m very concerned in the politicisation concealed in the Argentinean move. Even in the most difficult times, we made every effort to leave considerations which were not pure sport out of the soccer fields, and it’s a shame the Argentine team failed to do it this time.”

The visit of twice world champions Argentina has attracted huge interest among Israeli fans, mainly because of Barcelona great Lionel Messi’s planned participation.

    Palestinians celebrated the cancellation.

In Gaza, people cheered and in Ramallah in the West Bank, the Palestinian Football Association issued a statement thanking Messi and his colleagues for cancelling the game.

  • Messi scared of post retirement life

There is no sign that Lionel Messi is about to retire soon, but the Argentina international is already having goose pimples over what life will be like in retirement whenever it eventually comes.

As if that is not enough the state of insecurity and other vices in his country is another source of migraine.

Messi moved to Barcelona from his home town of Rosario in Argentina as an 11-year-old, with the club’s willingness to pay for expensive growth hormone treatments well-documented.

Those injections helped Messi to develop like any other child would have and, although he remained more diminutive than many of his contemporaries, his physical stature eventually stopped being a weakness and he blossomed in La Masia.

He has since gone on to win a record five Ballons d’Or and become arguably the greatest player of all time, while he his record of 542 official goals for the club is 310 more than anyone else has ever managed at Barca.

But, at the age of 30, Messi is approaching the twilight of his career and his thoughts of what to do upon retirement have started to take root, even if he remains entirely undecided on absolutely everything.

“Everyone says it is very difficult and I have no doubt about that,” he said during an appearance on America TV’s La Cornisa.

“It is very difficult not to have the routine of training, playing. I do not know what I’m going to do, where to live.

“I would like to do everything that I could not, but I do not know if it’s going to be in Barcelona, Rosario. I do not know what I’m going to do.”

Part of Messi’s uncertainty appears to stem from the current social problems in Argentina.

“I suffer and I feel sorry that today Argentina is as it is,” he added. “The reality of the country, the insecurity.

“I look at the future, I think about being able to return to Rosario and enjoying my city because I could not do so as a kid, I had to come here, something I do not regret, but I’m worried.

“Robberies are all over the world, but it’s crazy that something more could happen to you.

“I know it’s impossible [these days], but I remember that I went out all day to the street and nothing would happen.”

  • Goals to rain in LaLiga

Goals are expected this weekend in the Spanish LaLiga  given the excellent form of many of the league’s big name attackers, while defensive security will be paramount for those teams closer to the bottom.

LaLiga’s current top scorer Lionel Messi of FC Barcelona will aim to add to his 24 goals so far this season when Athletic Club visit the Camp Nou on Sunday afternoon, with Athletic midfielder Raul Garcia hoping to continue on from his double strike last weekend.

Atlético Madrid travel to Villarreal on Sunday afternoon with their star Antoine Griezmann having scored eight in his last four LaLiga games. But Villarreal have their own in-form hitman in Carlos Bacca, who got the equaliser in the teams’ 1-1 meeting earlier this season at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Real Madrid face Girona on Sunday evening with red-hot Cristiano Ronaldo having 14 goals in his last eight LaLiga outings. However the visitors’ strike pair of Christhian Stuani and Portu will recall they both scored when the LaLiga debutants won October’s reverse fixture 2-1.

Three goals in his last two LaLiga games have boosted Valencia CF striker Rodrigo Moreno’s chances of World Cup selection for Spain. On the other side at Mestalla on Saturday afternoon will be Alavés’ Swedish forward John Guidetti, who is also hopeful of a trip to Russia.

Sunday’s lunchtime sees fifth placed Sevilla FC return to LaLiga action after their midweek Champions League exploits at Manchester United against a Leganes side who have conceded less than a goal a game this season at their Butarque home stadium.

Real Sociedad centre-forward Willian Jose will hope to celebrate his Brazil national team call-up with a goal when Getafe visit Anoeta on Saturday afternoon. Later that evening at the Benito Villamarin, Real Betis’ young attacker Loren, who has five goals in his first six LaLiga appearances, faces an Espanyol defence which has conceded just three goals in their last five games.

Saturday’s lunchtime at Riazor sees a huge clash in the battle towards the foot of the table, with 19th placed Deportivo La Coruna hosting an 18th placed Las Palmas side. Both teams have improved defensively recently, so one goal might well be enough for a very valuable three points in what is likely to be a tight encounter.

Both Depor and UDLP will kick off knowing whether 17th placed Levante built on last week’s debut win for coach Paco Lopez at home on Friday night to a solid Eibar side who have conceded just once per game over their last six LaLiga road trips.

Bottom team Malaga have gained some solace from the performances of young Moroccan World Cup hopeful Youssef En-Nesyri in recent weeks, but his team face a big challenge against Celta Vigo’s fearsome Russia-bound strike pair Iago Aspas and Maxi Gomez at Balaidos on Sunday evening.

  • Conte wants ‘perfect game’ from Chelsea against Barcelona

Conte wants ‘perfect game’ from Chelsea against Barcelona

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte said, the Premier League club must play the perfect game to beat a formidable Barcelona in Tuesday’s first leg of the Champions League last 16 ties.

The Premier League champions have recovered from a poor run of form, winning consecutive matches over West Bromwich Albion in the league and Hull City in the FA Cup.

However, Chelsea’s Italian coach is not getting carried away.

“On one hand you know this team is one of the best in the world – maybe they are favourites to win this competition,” Conte told British media.

“On the other hand we must be excited because we have a great opportunity to play a massive game against a really strong team and to show which our level is.

“… We have to try to have the perfect game, the perfect game to try to make the best decisions. For this type of team.

“They have fantastic characteristics with the ball. But they can have weaknesses without the ball and we have to try and exploit this.”

Barcelona’s star forward Lionel Messi has never scored in eight matches against Chelsea and Conte is eager for his team to maintain that record.

Chelsea last defeated the Spanish side in 2012 as the London outfit marched to their first Champions League title.

Midfielder Cesc Fabregas, who moved to Stamford Bridge from Barcelona in 2014, is confident that Conte’s side can repeat the feat.

“They try to put the first pressure very, very high – (they) always work towards the ball,” Fabregas said.

“If we can (get) past this first phase of their pressure, then we have the content to do that, and not put ourselves under too much pressure, then I think we can hurt them because they will leave a lot of spaces at the back.

“Hopefully we can give a good image of what we can do and do a good performance.”

Chelsea next travel to second-placed Manchester United in the league on Sunday.

  • Barcelona face team dilemma in visit to tiny Eibar

Barcelona face team dilemma in visit to tiny Eibar

FC Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde faces a dilemma before his side’s potentially tricky trip to in-form Eibar on Saturday, having watched his side’s seemingly unassailable La Liga lead grow smaller.

The lead has been cut to seven points from 11 in the last two weeks.

The advantage would normally give the coach room to rotate his squad in order to keep his side fresh for the visit to Chelsea in the Champions League three days later.

But tiny Eibar’s consistency means such a move risks his side falling closer to second-placed Atletico Madrid.

Eibar hail from a town of 27,000 inhabitants in the Basque region and are the smallest team in the top flight.

Five years ago they were in the 80-team regional third tier.

They have overcome a rocky start to the season to grow into genuine contenders for a European spot, rising to seventh place in the standings by losing only one of their last 12 games.

That run has included impressive 5-0 and 5-1 thrashings of Real Betis and Sevilla respectively, as well as victory over high-flying Valencia.

They have also developed a knack for edging tight games, snatching a 1-0 win at Leganes in their last outing with an injury-time goal.

It is a remarkable turnaround from their dismal form at the start of the season when they lost seven of their first 11 games.

However, Coach Jose Luis Mendilibar said his side had barely altered their style, which is based on pressing high, no-nonsense defending and frequent crosses into the opposing box.

“We’ve changed nothing, we don’t care which team we play, we’ll keep doing what we believe we do well,” the coach said.

“It’s easy for any analyst to see what we do in every game; we change hardly anything so it should be easy to play against us. It’s extraordinary to be in this position at this stage as no-one would have expected that when the season started.”

Barca have found it easy to play against Eibar, winning all seven of their games since the side were promoted and thrashing them 6-1 at the Nou Camp last September.

Lionel Messi seems to enjoy playing them too, having scored 12 goals in six meetings, including four in the last fixture.

The Catalans remain the only unbeaten team in Europe’s top five leagues but head to the tiny, 7,000-capacity Ipurua stadium following unconvincing draws against Espanyol and Getafe.

They will be boosted by the return of first-choice centre-backs Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti, however.

Atletico Madrid have won their last three league games and will be looking to keep the pressure on Barca when they host Athletic Bilbao on Sunday, while champions Real Madrid visit Real Betis.

Messi tips Neymar,Mbappe and Suarez for Ballon d’Or

Lionel Messi has claimed that Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Luis Suarez could all challenge him and Cristiano Ronaldo for the 2018 Ballon d’Or award.

The prize has been traded between the Barcelona forward and his Real Madrid rival over the last 10 years, with each picking up the trophy on five occasions.

Nobody has been able to split the Ronaldo and Messi stronghold for second place since 2010 either, when Spanish midfielders Andres Iniesta and Xavi finished second and third to their Argentinian team-mate respectively.

Despite their dominance in recent years, Messi has revealed that the pair face a number of threats this time around with the aforementioned trio firmly in contention.

‘There are many great players around today who can win the Ballon d’Or,’ Messi told WorldSoccer Magazine.

‘In recent years there have just been two, but now players like Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Luis Suarez can compete.’

Neymar finished third in the standings behind Messi and Ronaldo in both 2015 and 2017

Neymar has come closest to edging Messi and Ronaldo in recent memory with the Brazilian finishing third in both 2015 and 2017.

The world’s most expensive player is flourishing for Paris Saint-Germain and has scored 28 goals in 27 appearances since his summer move from Barcelona.

Neither Mbappe or Suarez have made it into the top three before but both are worthy contenders. The Frenchman has combined

well with Neymar and Edinson Cavani in the French capital, notching 15 times in 31 games, while Suarez has 19 in 33 for Barcelona so far this campaign.

meanwhile just few hours to the kick off of another Champions League show, across Europe, Anderlecht have been ordered by

UEFA to partially refund Bayern Munich fans for their tickets for last November’s Champions League group game.

The Belgian club charged €100 per ticket for the travelling supporters for the game at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium, which Bayern won 2-1.

UEFA has ruled the price was excessive and has instructed Anderlecht to reimburse Bayern by €30 per ticket.

In a statement released by their Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body, UEFA said: “RSC Anderlecht is ordered to contact FC Bayern Munich within 15 days to compensate their supporters with an amount of €30 per ticket to those away fans located in the upper tier section (sections S14, S15, S16 and S17).”

In December, UEFA fined Bayern €20,000 after their fans protested against the inflated ticket costs.

Supporters threw fake bank notes onto the pitch and displayed a banner, which read: ‘”€100? Is your gr€€d [sic] now finally $satisfied?”‘.

Messi reveals name of third child

Lionel Messi and his wife Antonela Roccuzzo are preparing to welcome another little boy into their family. And that little boy now has a name.

Barcelona icon Messi took to Instagram on Wednesday, sharing a video of his wife’s bump alongside the caption: ‘Baby Ciro’.

Messi and his childhood sweetheart already have two sons — Thiago, five, and Mateo, two — with No 3 Ciro expected to arrive late this month or in early March.

She shared a photo of Thiago kissing her belly in November next to the words: ‘The sweetest older brother’.

Life away from football appears to be going swimmingly well for Messi, who is continuing to excel on the pitch too.

The Argentina star has providied 20 goals and 10 assists in 22 La Liga appearances this season.

He has also netted three times in four Champions League starts.

Meanwhile team mate Luis Suarez enjoyed some home comforts on Wednesday as the Barcelona striker drunk some traditional South American tea over breakfast at his personal restaurant.

The Uruguayan posted a photo of himself with ‘mate’ tea at his Barcelona breakfast spot Chalito Rambla which is based in the city centre.

Suarez drank the beverage with a straw as he displayed his personalised flask which featured photos of himself and his family.

Suarez’s restaurant, which was launched in October, specialises in barbeque and roast meat and is located in the heart of Barcelona’s tourist district.

His team-mate Lionel Messi is also a fan of the caffeine-rich drink and last month enjoyed a mug with his pregnant wife Antonella Roccuzzo.

The South American favourite is particularly popular in Argentina and Uruguay and is traditionally consumed through a straw and held in a gourd.

Suarez is gearing up for Barcelona’s Copa del Rey semi-final second leg against Valencia at the Mestalla on Thursday evening.

Holders Barcelona are 1-0 up on aggregate from the first leg thanks to Suarez’s second-half winner last week at the Nou Camp.

Ernestro Valverde’s side were held to a 1-1 draw with Catalan rivals Espanyol last time out as Gerard Pique’s equaliser eight minutes from time rescued a point.

Barcelona remain nine points clear of second-placed Valencia at the top of La Liga with holders Real Madrid languishing in fourth place, 19 points off their rivals.

  • Messi goes traditional with Mate drink

Messi goes traditional with Mate drink

Lionel Messi has been spending some quality time with his pregnant wife as the pair enjoy a sip of ‘mate’.

The Barcelona star has often been seen with a cup of mate, a South American beverage which is popular with his team-mates.

With the Catalan club nine points clear in the race for La Liga and with the Argentine the current top scorer in the league, we may have found his secret to their success.

Mate is a caffeine-rich drink, similar to tea, which has become popular in South America- notably Argentina and Uruguay. It is consumed through a straw and traditionally held in a gourd.

The 30-year-old was pictured at home enjoying the drink ahead of Barcelona’s second-leg against Celta Vigo in the Copa del Rey.

His pregnant wife Antonella Roccuzzo was also pictured drinking it with the distinctive mug – personalised with her name – balanced on her baby bump.

Messi is not the only Barca star who enjoys a sip of mate. Team-mate Luis Suarez is also a fan and has frequently been seen enjoying a mug or two.

We may be seeing new signing Philippe Coutinho holding a cup of mate soon enough, with the playmaker securing his much-anticipated move to the Nou Camp.

The £145million man is however expected to have a delayed debut at the Nou Camp after it was revealed that he has a thigh injury that will keep him on the sidelines for at least three weeks.

Coutinho nonetheless thanked Barcelona fans for their warm welcome as he was presented on the pitch at Camp Nou on Monday.

The Brazil international completed his move from Liverpool to Barca earlier in the day by undergoing a medical and signing a five-and-a-half-year contract.

Coutinho then ventured out onto the playing surface for the first time and, despite the thigh injury that is set to keep him out for three weeks, performed kick-ups to the delight of the thousands of fans in attendance.

“I’m happy to be here because of the history of the club and the players that have played here through history,” he said.

“I want to thank everybody for the great welcome, especially on social media.

“I hope to be able to play soon and live up to the high expectations.”

  • Penalties: I am still below par says Messi

Penalties: I am still below par says Messi

Despite his basketful of awards, Barcelona and Argentina forward Lionel Messi says he is still not an all rounder admitting that penalty misses when it mattered most have been a source of worry for him.

Messi who bared his mind Tuesday, said he needed to practice more to achieve his heart desire of becoming a perfect penalty taker.

Messi, now 30, is regarded by many to be the finest player to ever grace a football pitch, with his unmatched dribbling abilities, other-worldly vision, deft first-touch and frankly ridiculous cool in front of goal combining for a package as close to footballing perfection as fans are likely to witness over the course of their lifetimes.

The Argentine has racked up 8 La Liga titles, 5 Copa Del Reys, 6 Spanish Super Cups, 4 Champions League crowns, 3 Uefa Super Cups and 3 FIFA Club World Cups with Barcelona, as well as a record-equaling 5 Ballons d’Or on an individual level.

He has also notched over 500 goals at club level, and a national record 61 for Argentina.

Messi has attempted 104 penalties, of which he has netted 81, and missed 23, a conversion rate of just under 78% .

While a conversion rate of almost 4 in 5 would certainly be an acceptable ratio for most players, it just doesn’t quite cut it for one of the most technically-gifted stars of all-time.

Messi himself was questioned on how he can still improve as a footballer during an interview with Blic, and the South American legend was quick to point to his profligacy from the penalty spot:

‘I want to be perfect and yet there are some parts of game I have to improve to reach the maximum level. Which part? Penalties, I have to practice them more.’

Messi who will be expected to lead Argentina to the World Cup in Russia, will certainly not be practicing for perfection for the good of Barcelona but also for Argentina who have been drawn against Nigeria, Iceland and Croatia at the forthcoming world cup in Russia. Argentina and Nigeria will lock horns on June 26 at Krestovsky Stadium. Nigeria be going to their sixth world cup and have been pitched against Argentina in four editions with the Russian edition making it the fifth time both countries will be clashing at the Mundial.
