  • Members protest Abuja church’s demolition, pastor’s assault

Members of Living Faith Church in Gwagwalada Abuja are protesting what they termed as unlawful demolition of their church by officials of the Department of Development Control of the Federal Capital Development Authority (DDC-FCDA).

The members said, beside the demolition of the church, located along the Specialist Hospital Road in Gwagwalada, the Resident Senior Pastor, Caleb Olubiyi was also assaulted by some policemen attached to the officials of the DDC-FCDA.

The Chairman of the church’ board, Elder Samuel Olaleye, who was flanked by various placard- bearing members, told  journalists although the structure had, for two years now, been marked for demolition, the officials gave no prior notice before the exercise was effected last Wednesday.

Olaleye described the demolition and assault on the pastor as “barbaric, horrific, illegal and disheartening,” adding the DDC-FCDA’s bulldozers were brought down on the church building without notice.

He said the property title and other verifiable documents, showing that the land belongs to Living Faith, are in the custody of the church.

Olaleye wondered why the DDA-FCDA decided to embark on “a wicked and malicious act without recourse to due process”.

He said Pastor Olubiyi has been on admission, in an undisclosed hospital, since Wednesday due to the injuries he sustained as a result of the police brutality.

The church’s Legal Adviser, Olurumotito George, gave details of what led to the assault on Pastor Olubiyi.

He argued the beating of the man of God was uncalled for and highly condemnable.

George said eyewitness accounts and information from the injured pastor showed he was seriously beaten by the policemen, because he attempted to take shots of the bulldozers during the demolition.

He added: “The pastor on hearing the news of the demolition quickly rushed to the scene. He was even on the other side of the road.

“So, when he brought out his phone to take photographs of the demolition, the policemen sighted him and rushed towards him.

“The policemen enquired why he was taking pictures and he told them he wanted to send it to our General Overseer, Bishop David Oyedepo.

“My brother, that was all. The next thing, according to Pastor Olubiyi, was beating,” George said.

He wondered why the officials of the DDC-FCDA chose to demolish the church when some buildings, erected on the same line with the church, were left untouched by the officials of the DDC-FCDA/Fed Ministry of Works, Power and Housing.

On what the church intends to do next, George said it has lodged a complaint with the Police Service Commission (PSC), alleging criminal victimisation of its pastor by the policemen attached to the demolition team.

The protesting church members identified the three police officers, who they claimed assaulted Pastor Olubiyi, as J. C Audu, ASP Mathias Agbo and Urento Monday.

Pastor Moses Oyedele of the Living Faith Church, Durumi in the FCT has called on eligible voters among Christians to obtain their Permanent Voter cards (PVCs).

Oyedele, who made the call on Sunday in a sermon to the congregation, said this was to enable them elect leaders of their choice in the 2019 general elections.

“The objective of the PVC is that, every registered voter gets his or her card on time so as to allow him or her exercise his or her franchise during the elections.

“Already, there are complaints over the collection of the cards, as many of the registered voters are unable to get their PVCs,’’ he said.

He said possession of PVC was only the means through which the electorate could chose leaders of their choice.

“As the nation general election draws closer, I appeal to the body of Christ who are eligible to vote to register and get their voter cards.

“This will enable them to vote God-fearing leaders and of proven integrity, in the interest of national development.

“The electorate can only actualise their dreams for good governance if they vote leaders of proven integrity.

“They can only vote leaders of their choice when they register and have their voter cards,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set Aug. 17as deadline for the Continuous Voter Registration – CVR.

Nigeria will not disintegrate – Bishop Oyedepo

Dr. David Oyedepo, the Presiding Bishop of the Living Faith Church Worldwide says Nigeria will not breakup in spite of its present challenges.

He said this in a satellite telecast of the church’s prayer session monitored by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos on Monday.

The Bishop had led the church in a 30-minute breakfast prayer for the country.

Oyedepo said it was made known to him via divine revelation in 1979 while praying for the well-being of the country that Nigeria would never disintegrate.

“The good news is that Nigeria will rise again to glory,” he assured.

The Bishop led members in prayer for peace and prosperity of the country.

Prayers were also made for God to intervene and direct the government to make policies that would be to the benefit of the people and the country.

“Nigeria shall not see war; God will visit eternal silence on every religious bigot being used to cause war; there will be no bloodshed in the country

“Let Nigeria know peace; make this our independence gift; let every religious manipulator be stopped today.

  • Nigeria’s dependence on food importation dangerous – Oyedepo

Nigeria’s dependence on food importation dangerous – Oyedepo

President Living Faith Church (Winners Chapel) Worldwide, Bishop David Oyedepo on Thursday described the over dependence of Nigeria on imported agriculture produce as akin to ferreting diseases into the country.

Dr Oyedepo added that a country that is prodigiously blessed like Nigeria has no basis for importing chickens into the country.

The clergyman said this in Omu-Aran, Irepodun local government at this year’s convocation lecture of Landmark University, adding that to neglect agriculture is tantamount to mortgaging the future of Nigeria.

His words: “We must shift from theory to things that address human issues. We need to come back to the real issues confronting use. We need to start creating solutions. A country that is enormously blessed
as Nigeria has no basis to import chickens from any part of the world.

We must invest in agricultural service to create the future of our dream and that is raw agricultural practices.

“We can solve our problems if we are committed enough, but i don’t think we are that committed. Everybody must play his own part in solving the problem of food security in the world. Africa is the worst hit by the food security ravaging the world. Let us give the people in other parts of the world the impression that Nigerians are thinking.”

Earlier, the Convocation lecturer, who doubles as the Managing Partner, Sahel Capital AgriBusiness Managers, Menzuo Nwunei said that Nigeria is not self-sufficient in food production, as it imports over
45 percent of its food needs.

Mr. Nwunei added that “Nigeria’s food imports have historically grown at a rate of 11 percent per year. The country’s major dependence on food imports is hurting local production, reducing local farmers’
welfare and contributing to increasing unemployment.

“Domestic inflation currently at about 18 percent is fuelled in part, by the demand for expensive food imports. The demand for food imports has placed download pressure on the value of the Naira and contributed to depleting foreign reserves.”

He said that Nigeria’s import dependency is not economically sustainable and therefore should be unacceptable. According to him, agriculture is the most important sector in the Nigerian economy but remains dominated by smallholder farmers who operate at a subsistence level.

Quoting the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the guest speaker said that between 2007 and 2016, over $113 billion was the foreign investment in Nigeria.

“Of and agribusiness related investments, the preponderance of the investment went into activities outside the major cities. About $427 million was geared towards agribusiness related investments,” he
    added.

He, however, said: “Even with this increase in investment, over $5 billion is needed to provide required financing for farmers and agribusinesses.”

Okowa said prayer was necessary to overcome the present challenges facing the nation.

According to the governor, Nigeria today depends on God to continue to survive because in the last few days a lot of things have happened.

“There is a threat by the words of men but I know that by God’s grace, Nigeria is one and God will continue to keep us together.

“We must realise that it is time for us to think and reflect on the past, examine our homes and examine ourselves.’’

“It is good to give thanks to God in all things and we hope and pray for the best as we move into the third session.
