Veteran actress, Liz Benson who mesmerized movie viewers in its early days has staged a comeback in a new movie titled, “Busted’’

The movie was produced by Lisa Onu and Face Onu would premiere on May 21, at the Oriental Hotel, Lagos

It tells the love story of a gay couple also featured veterans like Kate Henshaw, Paul Obazele, TV host, IK Ogbonna and other new talented actors in the movie industry.

Busted is the story of a girl, Queen Edwards who was born into a reputable home that the father’s high handedness and mother’s lackadaisical attitude led her (Queen) to a maid who lured her into lesbianism.

She continued the act into adulthood dating and breaking up with different ladies.

In the process, she (Queen) falls in love with a lady called Blessing who got into the act for financial gains.

When the government signed the anti-gay bill into law, the lovers ignored their biblical beliefs and societal views of lesbianism which challenged their love for each other.

NAN reports that Benson, one of the  screen divas in the early days of Nollywood, later retired and went into evangelism.

Similarly, Obazele, who also acted in many soap operas’ on National Television in the 90s, has been off the screen for some years.

AFTER taking a break from regular acting, Nollywood screen diva of yore, Liz Benson, and notable actor Tony Umez have resurfaced in a theatre-inclined movie, ‘Busted’.

Produced by Lisa Onu, with Executive producer as Ifeanyinwa Face Ikuku, the movie, directed by Pat Oghre and Damijo Efe-Young also stars top Nollywood actors such as Kate Henshaw, Paul Obazela, I.K Ugbonna, Lisa Onu, Brian Okwara and Chika Okpara among others.

A controversial love story, ‘Busted’ tells the story of Queen, a girl child born into a decent home but whose father’s strictness and mother’s ignorance led her into the arms of a maid who changed her entire being. Now as a grown woman, unknown to her parents, Queen has a different understanding to life and has taken to a new lifestyle. She eventually meets ‘The Love of her life’, Blessing; another beautiful young lady who willingly surrenders to the lifestyle due to the economic hardship. Unfortunately for the lovers, the Nigerian law sector has passed a bill in the constitution against the act of same sex marriage. Ignoring the Biblical belief and what the society thinks of them, the law becomes the tussle that leads to the test of their love.

VETERAN Nollywood star, Liz Benson-Ameye, her counterparts, Adebayo Salami, aka Oga Bello, Nobert Young and legendary Kannywood actor, Kasimu Yaro have been named recipients of this year’s Special Recognition Award by the organisers of Best of Nollywood (BON) Awards.

The event, which will be hosted by Governor Rotimi Amaechi, is scheduled to take place this Saturday, October 11, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Liz, who started her movie career as a teenager, got her break in the 1994 movie, Glamour Girls. Soon, she evolved into a major box office star with impressive following. She however veered into Christian evangelism and got married to Great Ameye, Founder and Pastor of the Rainbow Christian Assembly, Warri, Delta State.

A University of Benin trained theater artiste, Nobert Young, has traversed the entire gamut of the industry  with repertoire spanning stage, television, video and cinema. Critical of the ‘mediocrity’ in Nollywood, Nobert strives to make his works stand out from the crowd. Little wonder he is regarded as one of the most methodical actors to have come out of Africa. He is married to crossover actress, Gloria Young (nee Anozie).

For the past four decades, Oga Bello has been a permanent fixture in the Nigerian movie industry. The Ilorin, Kwara State-born thespian has hundreds of English and Yoruba movies to his credit, and numerous local and international honours and recognition. Like Oga Bello, Kasim Yaro is a legend in the Hausa entertainment industry. He is best known for his 2007 movie, Who Will Tell The President and the Amstel Malta Box Office-produced Cindy’s Notes.

According to the organisers, “Apart from honouring the stars and stakeholders of Nollywood every other year, we have also taken it upon ourselves to recall the sacrifices and strides of those elders whose artistry have catalysed the growth and global acceptance that Nollywood enjoys today. We don’t want to wait until these veterans are dead to give them posthumous awards, which is why we have decided to celebrate them while they are still alive and active. Besides, this year’s honorees are a source of inspiration to young actors because of their longevity and continued relevance in the industry.”

  • I’ve not stopped acting, says Liz Benson

I’ve not stopped acting, says Liz Benson

RENOWNED Nollywood actress, Liz Ameye (formerly Liz Benson), has debunked rumours in some quarters that she has not stopped acting.

She said she had not been featuring in movies due to her new position as an Evangelist.

During a press briefing on Thursday, she said, “I never left acting. One of the things we can’t stop as human beings is growth. I grew into this (Evangelism) because I have a calling to be in the Ministry. I still look at that area of my life in the movie industry as something that God wanted to use as a tool for me to do greater things. I don’t know what is in His mind, so I had to answer this call; and in doing this, if I was able to touch the lives of people as an actor, how much more now with God on our side,” she stated.

She also spoke passionately about Living Funeral, which has earned her nomination for the Best Supporting Actress in Drama slot in the next edition of Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).

The thespian, who emphasised that she would like to be addressed as Liz Ameye rather than Liz Benson, noted that what endeared her to the movie was the message in the script.

“Doing the work of God is not by preaching alone, but also being able to chancel people and being able to reach out to people through films like this (Living Funeral). Acting is also a route to educate people on how to live with situations such as cancer and other ailments,” she said.

She added that she would continue to accept movie scripts inasmuch as it will help her work as an Evangelist.
