American singer and rapper, Melissa Viviane Jefferson, popularly known as Lizzo, has announced her decision to quit music, citing persistent online trolling over her appearance.
According to her, her decision stemmed from relentless cyberbullying, revealing that the constant negativity took a toll on her mental health.
The Grammy winner also addressed the phenomenon of “bullying for clout”, explaining that some individuals target her specifically to gain attention and followers.
In an emotional Instagram post, the 35-year-old singer wrote: “I’m getting tired of putting up with being dragged by everyone in my life and on the internet, all I want is to make music and make people happy. Help the world be a little better than how I felt it, but I’m starting to feel like the world does not want me in it.
“I’m constantly up against lies being told about me for clout & views… being the butt of the joke every single time because of how I look, my character being picked apart by people who don’t know me and disrespecting my name. I didn’t sign up for this sh*t… I quit.”
Lizzo’s career has been nothing short of remarkable with four Grammy Awards under her belt, including Best New Artist and Best Urban Contemporary Album, she has solidified her place in music history.
She’s also snagged a Billboard Music Award, a BET Award, and two Soul Train Music Awards.
