LMC Dedicates Match Day 26 to Emeteole

Players and match officials of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) are to turn out with black armbands to honour a former coach of prominent NPFL clubs, Kelechi Emeteole who passed on in the early hours of Wednesday.

Emeteole, nicknamed ‘Caterpillar’ in his playing days for various league clubs in the country died in India where he underwent surgery for throat cancer.

Shehu Dikko, the Chairman of the League Management Company (LMC) expressed grief at the demise of the Coach who in addition to managing several league clubs also worked with national teams including the Super Eagles, the Flying Eagles, the Golden Eaglets and the Beach Soccer team, otherwise called the Super Sand Eagles.

“The passing on of Coach Emeteole is a great loss to the NPFL because he was a coach that has been very prominent in the league coaching teams and raising some of the players who have made this country proud.

He was a true Nigerian who played football and worked with clubs across the states, speaking all three Nigerian major languages,” remarked Dikko.

After retiring from active football with the then Spartans of Owerri, Emeteole took to coaching and remarkably helped El-Kanemi Warriors return to the NPFL rising all the way from the then Division 3 through to the Division two and to the defunct Nigeria Football League. A prominent protégée of his at the Borno side is Enyimba International FC’s Ikechukwu Ibenegbu who had gone on to represent Nigeria at the senior level and the Beach Soccer championships.

The late Emeteole also had repeat stints at Heartland FC of Owerri and Rangers International.

The LMC has therefore directed that a minute silence be observed across all NPFL venues on Saturday, June 24 and on Wednesday, June 28 for the Match Day 26 fixtures.

    Wikki Tourists receive royal blessing

The management, technical crew as well as players of Wikki Tourists FC of Bauchi have been urged to be more united towards achieving success this season.

The Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Rilwanu Suleimau Adamu gave the charge in his palace when he hosted the team on Saturday.

He said no meaningful development can be achieved without peace and he assured them of his continuous support and prayers.

The chairman of the club, Isa Musa Matori told the Emir that the visit was to show respect and seek for his support and royal blessings.

Matori, however, apologised to the royal father for their inability to come earlier before now.

The chairman later presented the emir with a plaque and appointment letter as the royal father of Wikki Tourist FC.

The Big Elephants lost 1-0 to Plateau United in the matchday 17 of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) clash in Jos on Sunday.

Ganaru is not Wikki Tourists’ problem, says Bosso

El Kanemi Warriors technical adviser, Isa Ladan Bosso has thrown his weight behind the embattled Wikki Tourists coach Mohammed Baba Ganaru.

Ganaru and his technical crew as well as the players were given four-match ultimatum by the management to change the situation at the club following series of poor results.

Bosso told SportingLife that the Nigerian system was frustrating the former Nasarawa United coach, adding that Ganaru achievements in the Nigeria league have not been appreciated.

“I think the system is frustrating Ganaru,” Bosso lamented. “This is a coach that has won the league back-to-back when he was at Kano Pillars and nobody from the system considered him good for the national team job (U-17, U-20, U-23 and Super Eagles), even as an assistant coach. Just last season, some coaches were given Super Eagles jobs because they did well at the beginning of the season.

“I know Ganaru as a good coach. He has worked under me and I know his worth, and I have never doubt his competency as far as coaching is concerned. He should not be placed under undue pressure because things are not going the way they want it at the moment. I don’t think he is the problem of the Wikki Tourists and I believe that results will come if everybody rally behind and give him all the necessary support,” Bosso said to SportingLife.

  • LMC task clubs on crowd control

LMC task clubs on crowd control

The League Management Company (LMC) has urged Nigeria Professional Football League clubs to ensure strict compliance with safety measures at match venues.

The call is coming on the heels of various security lapses witnessed as a result of increasing spectators’ attendance at games since 2013 thanks to the strategic campaign of bringing back the fans to the stadium.

In a letter to the clubs, LMC Chief Operating Officer, Salihu Abubakar tasked them to put up adequate security measures in their home games on match days alongside other related issues.

“Attendance at NPFL matches has been rising with some games attracting full capacity and having some fans not able to gain access to the stands,” Salihu wrote.

“There have been some photographs that showed the possible breach of regulations in which it was observed that more fans may have been admitted to the games than stadium capacity can allow.

“Citing Rules B15.19 of the 2016/17 Framework and Rules, the LMC reminded all clubs that match day tickets must be issued to all spectators to a match even if the gates were declared free.”

He further said: “This is also in consonance with world football governing body, FIFA requirements as contained in FIFA Safety Regulations, Article 18.1 which states that “On match days, only persons in possession of valid permits shall be granted entry to the stadium. Valid permits include Match tickets, Workers’ identity cards and Passes”.

“Noting that some clubs have of recent been observed to have failed to implement adequate crowd control measures, the LMC insisted that all Clubs are required to comply with and implement health and safety measures to prevent overcrowding of stands or the stadium or other situations which may endanger the lives or wellbeing of spectators.

“It also directed that clubs must put in place other safety requirements such as having trained stewards whose responsibility will include but not limited to monitoring the stands to ensure the capacity of sectors assigned to them were not over crowded, directing fans to appropriate sitting areas and alerting authorities of risk situations.

“Another requirement is the provision of functional public address systems which should be operated on match days for announcements.”

LMC invites bids from financial advisors to manage club enlistment

The League Management Company (LMC) in partnership with over the counter securities market operator, NASD Securities Exchange took a major step towards bringing private sector investment into the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) when on Monday, March 13 financial advisors were invited to bid for appointment to work with eight of the 20 NPFL clubs shortlisted for the pilot project.

The financial advisors are to serve as consultants that will prepare the clubs to meet regulatory requirements for enlistment in the stock market and be eligible to attract investment either through being publicly quoted or attract direct financial investment from individuals or investment groups.

In making the process open and to attract the best industry experts, the LMC placed advertisement in two influential national newspapers, This Day and Businessday on Monday, March 13 calling for expression of interest from qualified investment advisory experts.

Documents developed in the last three years by the LMC indicate that in the emerging prospectus for investment in the clubs, different models are being structured, some of which include fans’ ownership, outright and part acquisition through shareholding and privatization.

Chairman of the LMC, Shehu Dikko said: “We expect that at the completion of the process, clubs would be positioned to access seed funding for infrastructure development and operational capital in addition to instituting proper corporate governance structures that will provide the enabling environment to operate as commercial business entities without compromising sporting requirements.”

He further explained that the opening of the process to every qualified investment advisory company was to ensure that the clubs received the best preparation to meet regulatory requirements within the shortest possible time.

Dikko recalled that the eight clubs were unanimously approved at the 2nd Annual General Meeting of the LMC in Enugu on December 11, 2016 and listed the clubs as Rangers International, Enyimba International, Kano Pillars and El-Kanemi Warriors. Others are Wikki Tourists, Gombe United, Shooting Stars Sports Club and MFM FC.

The LMC had in 2016 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NASD OTC Securities Exchange to create a platform for the listing of the clubs on the stock exchange and drive private sector investment in the clubs through a professional and transparent manner. The selected clubs were mandated to submit letter of consent from their respective state government owners as a basic requirement to start the process.

The advisers to be appointed would work with the clubs and their Government to prepare the required documentation and structure required for the listing of the clubs as well as to manage the process on behalf of the clubs.

Dikko added that a target date of August 2017 had been set for the completion of the listing process

El Kanemi Warriors pay Emeteole N3m

El Kanemi Warriors has finally paid its former head coach, Kelechi Emeteole the sum of 3, 000, 000 (three million naira) owed him when he was in charge of the team.

  • LMC set to unveil multi-sponsors for NPFL

LMC set to unveil multi-sponsors for NPFL

    …NFF may adopt same model
    for national teams

THE League Management Company (LMC) is in advanced talks with several big-money companies desirous to pick some of its sponsorship portfolios even as its chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko reiterated that the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) would no longer have a solitary tile sponsor.
The NPFL until now had telecommunication outfit, Globacom as its major backer but Dikkko declared that the LMC has adopted a new approach in its drive to attract huge funds and would henceforth go for multi sponsors based on exclusive categories.
“There would no more title sponsor for the league and this has been our resolve after the expiration of the contract with Globacom; Glo is no more an issue as we had ended since 2015,” Dikko who was a recipient of t the Sport Personality of the Year at the SUN Awards told The Nation. “We have passed that (stage of given out the sponsorship of the league to on company) and we have drop that system; we are only going for multi sponsors based on exclusive categories as well as strategic partner.
According to Dikko who doubles as the NFF’s 2ndVice-President, there would be different categories such as official telecommunications, official Bank, official car, official Beverage amongst others.
Last year, the LMC announced a ground-breaking 5-year partnership deal with top Nigeria beer brand, Star Lager as the official beer partner of the league body and Dikko said matter-of-factly that the successful new partners would be operating under the NPFL brand.
“Even the EPL in England have now dropped Barclays which used to be their title sponsor as such we are talking with so many options and the good thing is that NPFL is at a level that we can bid our time and not rush to take anything.”
In a related development, Dikko disclosed that the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) were most likely to adopt the LMC model by seeking multi-partnership packages for all its national teams as well as its programs.
“With the NFF, we are also going the same route by unbundling all the commercial properties especially the national teams by working to get individual sponsors for each national team.
“We couldn’t have done this earlier as there is already an existing contract signed long before our time that bundled everything together into one single project and sold to one company; so, we have to be patient and wait to for that contract to expire as breaking it would be more complex and problematic likewise renegotiating same as the party with the leverage would not just succumb.
“Thus we are in the market now working 24/7 to secure new partners in line to the new marketing strategy and within the current economic realities which is making immediate conclusion a bit difficult for obvious reasons.
“But we will soon be also unveiling new partners for the NFF which for sure will ease of up the financial demands on Government and further enhance efficiency to the NFF operations,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Dikko has enjoined the public and the press to refrain from actions that could inflict damages on the country’s football brand, insisting that blue-chip companies would invest in sport under a conducive environment.

  • Not again, LMC

At the risk of sounding immodest, I want to start this column by stating that I was a member of the Interim League Management (ILM) board that metamorphosed into the Nigeria Professional League (NPL) board. This concept was meant to jumpstart a new dawn in the domestic game. It has, however, several nomenclatures, such as NPL, NFL, NPFL etc, with the same objectives.

I rejected the call to aspire into the new board after the interim body’s term lapsed, because I was gainfully employed. I also felt that I didn’t need to be a member of the NFL to contribute to the growth of the game at any level. As a sports journalist, I cover all the sports. So, there wasn’t anything special with the NFL appointment, especially when some powerful forces were eager to stop the pioneer chairman, Oyuiki Jackson Obaseki, from returning to the new board.

Obaseki had done well during the interim tenure and needed to continue instead of having someone who will spend the first two years asking questions. Indeed, those who wanted Obaseki out couldn’t stand his guts. He was also an unsparing administrator when it comes to applying the rules.

For several hours, Obaseki, in his royal attire was waiting for the Edo State government’s approval to remain on the league board when he had been moved up to a patron, with the electoral body headed by Sani Toro insisting that they needed a letter of clarification from the Edo State government for him to run for the elections, even as he was seemingly the only candidate. I ensured that the approval came from the former Edo State governor, Lucky Igbinedion. The rest is history, but Obaseki was shocked at my role in his return. Need I waste space to list Obaseki’s achievements? I ask the current league management board, when they last visited Obaseki? Should such a man be abandoned to his fate?

Today’s piece isn’t about this writer. Nor is it about how Obaseki performed. It is about the show of shame in Saturday’s NPFL game between Kano Pillars and Ifeanyiubah FC of Nnewi inside the Sani Abacha stadium in the Pyramid City. I must emphasise here that this piece isn’t one to lambast the Shehu Dikko-led League Management Company (LCM). Rather, I want the body to use my posers to correct some of the mistakes noticed in the two instances where there were crises. This won’t deride the proprietor of the club, who has vowed not to appeal the decisions taken against his team. That is the spirit.

Reports from Kano confirmed that the visitors’ team manager ordered his boys out of the field of play for alleged biased officiating by the referee (Funso Ajayi from Oyo State). The team manager defied pleas by top government officials who watched the game, including the Kano State Governor, Umaru Ganduje, chairman of the LMC Shehu Dikko et al.

I was excited reading one report which stated that Dikko called the owner of the club to inter vene in the impasse. Some reports suggested that his move was unsuccessful. Did Dikko call Ifeanyubah FC’s proprietor? If yes, what did he say? Was he the one who ordered the boys back to the field of play? Most of the reports revealed that the referee, a woman, called off the game after waiting for the mandatory 15 minutes.

My hunch tells me that those players and their officials wanted to embarrass the woman. I may be wrong. But another case of fans’ invasion of the pitch at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu to harass another woman referee buttresses my opinion that these beasts wanted to undermine these women referees.

I have seen games handled perfectly by women. Those who saw the Kano mayhem didn’t rebuke the referee. Those who were in Enugu didn’t too? These urchins must face the law. The games were recorded, which presupposes that it will be easy to identify, arrest and prosecute the ringleaders of such devilish acts to serve as a deterrent to others who may wish to behave like them.

Interestingly, there have been several reports in the past berating Ifeanyiubah FC’s officials and their chieftains for their conduct during matches. I recall former NFF Secretary General Bolaji Ojo-Oba condemning the presence of gun wielding security operatives inside the dressing room of the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, last year at half time duirng the Nigeria FA Cup final between Ifeanyiubah FC and Nasarawa FC. Ojo-Oba was taken aback by their presence, which he traced to one of the proprietors. I don’t think it happens anywhere in the world that club owners would invade the dressing room at half-time.

I have waited for the NFF to react to Ojo-Oba’s statements; no word, not even a rebuttal of Ojo-Oba’s statement. Why will Ojo-Oba lie? He is a FIFA and CAF recognised match commissioner. He knows his onions. So, if he spoke publicly in that manner, something ought to have been done. Or are the NFF chiefs waiting until the next edition?

The team manager of Shooting Stars Sports (3SC) Ibadan, Rasheed Balogun, was shown lying, down dazed on the floor, following an encounter with some operatives, who Balogun alleged came with IfeanyiUbah FC for a league game last year. Let me not bore you with the fracas that ensued during the home game between IfeanyiUbah and relegated Heartland FC of Owerri, where the proprietor allegedly slapped Mikel Obi’s elder brother, Ebele, who was Heartland’s goalkeeper in the game in Nnewi. The billionaire wrote a letter of apology and an undertaking to be a good ambassador of the NPFL. Ifeanyi Ubah was fined N2.5 million and banned from 10 Premier League matches.

The background to the series of disturbances associated with IfeanyiUbah’s visits to match venues is necessary to appreciate the kind of sanctions slammed on the club by the NPFL body. But does the NPFL have the right to do what they did? Will this not translate to being a judge in one’s matter, considering the fact that all the decisions affected the club and the referee, with LMC not punished for failure of leadership?

If the referee was not good, who picked her for the game? Shouldn’t we know the criteria for picking match referees? Isn’t it a shame that the LMC doesn’t know its best match officials? How could such ineptitude on the part of the leadership happen in the first games in Kano and Enugu? Who were the two match commissioners? Why have they not been punished? Nothing has been said about their two reports. What did they advise the LMC to do?

Interestingly, the Nigeria Referees Association (NRA), the body tasked with the duty of punishing erring members, has applauded their member for the correct interpretation of the rules of the game. This buttresses my argument that the LMC should have allowed the appropriate body to perform its functions in meting out punishments of such magnitude.

NRA’s President, Tade Azeez, in a statement, revealed that the action of the referee (Kano Pillars vs IfeanyiUbah) with regards to the duration/time of each half is within the ambit of the laws of the game, citing Law 7 – the duration of the game.

Gbam, like my daughter will say. The NRA president appealed to the relevant bodies to enlighten the clubs, their officials, fans and players about the laws of the game. This is the crux of what happened in Kano and Enugu. The LMC must tell us what they learned from their sojourn in Spain, if they didn’t organise such a course for the people listed by the NRA president. I don’t want to sound pessimistic. But it must be stressed here that the LMC must educate club officials and coaches during pre-match meetings on how they must conduct themselves before, during and after matches.

Many club officials and coaches incite the fans with their sideline theatrics, which most times is not listed as the catalyst when the crisis begins. Perhaps, those televising the games should focus the cameras on these officials’ theatrics. Such visuals could be used to punish the erring people, even if there wasn’t any crisis during and after the game. Technical issues are meant for the experts to interpret. Indeed the referee couldn’t have been punished on matters concerning the game’s timing because the rules specifically state that the sole judge of time in a game is the centre referee. Who cares about the timing of those at the stands? How many of them stopped their timing mechanisms for wasted periods in the game?

With the Kano State governor present in the stadium, one assumes that there wasn’t any problem with security. I must commend the operatives for managing the crisis. It isn’t easy to persuade fans to leave the stadium in a stalemated game. Perhaps, it was easy since the home team won the game technically.

My worry is that LMC, in punishing for the harassment of the female referee after the game in Enugu, did nothing to fish out the culprits who were captured by the cameras. We must commend the policemen who were inside the stadium in Enugu for the perfect job. The LMC should submit the visuals of the Enugu game to the police to search for those yobos. They are not spirits. They must be taught some lessons in being civil. What happened last weekend in Enugu is a bad testimonial for the league, if we truly want Nigerians to throng the stadia for games.

I’m also worried that the presence of the LMC chairman at the venue couldn’t restore order at the pitch, which makes it imperative for Dikko to tell us what he did in Kano to prevent the show-of-shame. I had thought that his presence could have made the game end. Dikko, what did Ifeanyi Ubah tell you?

Dikko, Rangers want to appeal the decisions taken by your body. Rangers’ management members have revealed that they have visuals showing the invasion of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium’s pitch by fans’ of the opposing team. Interesting, isn’t it Dikko? If Rangers’ officials present this visual showing the opposition’s fans dressed in their team’s colours, what will happen to the decisions taken? Reversed? Will that not be laughable? We wait.
