Why TikTok needs regulation in Nigeria, by Lolo 1

Actress and media personality Lolo1 has expressed strong concerns about the content on TikTok, calling for stricter regulation of the platform in Nigeria.

Speaking on News Central TV, Lolo1 said that TikTok lacks sufficient measures to curb indecent and vulgar material, citing the ease of accessing suggestive content online as troubling.

Lolo1 advocated closer content monitoring, including in local languages and suggested that some words should not be allowed on the platform.

According to her, she has stopped accessing TikTok, finding it terrifying and prefers Instagram.

She said: “I think pornography and nudity are things we shy away from. Now when we look at both men and women, before they used to lay indecent dressing at the feet of women. But now I see men dress as provocatively as women can. I’ve seen men wear things to make me look up because I don’t know where to look.

“The accessibility to photography is what is troubling to me, especially because we can’t actually put a lid on it.

“Social media is also as bad but to me Instagram is better, I have stopped accessing places like tiktok because it terrifies me. Tiktok is like a freeway into everything. I think they need to do something about it, I remain an advocate for some kind of limitation on social media or regulation.

“There are some words they shouldn’t allow on there and not just English. People on tiktok also use their mother tongue to say all sorts of rubbish too, very vulgar things”.

Media personality Lolo 1 has strongly criticized the recent deployment of tear gas by security operatives on peaceful protesters in Abuja, describing the action as excessive and unwarranted.

The protest, led by the Take-It-Back Movement in collaboration with several civil society groups, sought to draw attention to Nigeria’s deepening economic crisis and the alleged abuse of the Cybercrime Act.

Despite the peaceful nature of the demonstration, law enforcement agents disrupted the gathering by releasing tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Reacting to the incident, Lolo questioned the rationale behind the forceful response, noting that there were no reports of violence or threats posed by the protesters.

“People have a constitutional right to gather peacefully. That’s their right, it’s in the law. But when citizens come together without any sign of violence, without weapons or any form of disturbance, why respond with such force?” she asked.

Lolo 1, known for her outspokenness, further challenged the authorities’ perception of peaceful protests as threats, stating that such a mindset undermines the foundations of a democratic society.

“Even if they were chanting, it’s just words. Words don’t become bullets. So, why fire tear gas into a crowd that hasn’t shown any aggression? Was there anything they did to suggest they’d disrupt public order? If not, then wasn’t that show of force too aggressive?”, she said.

According to the group, the law is being used to clamp down on freedom of speech, intimidate journalists, and silence dissenting voices.

Media personality and actress Omotunde Adebowale-David, also known as Lolo 1, has shared her traumatic experience of being raped by a male colleague in the broadcasting industry on her podcast “Say My Piece”.

According to Lolo 1, she was raped by a colleague, which has left her traumatised and experiencing momentary panic whenever she sees him.

She said naming the attacker now will bring her criticism for not speaking out before but doing so now that the said person is an established figure in the industry.

She said: “I hardly ever say this, and I am not even ready to tell the full story. The stories of sexual assault. When I discussed it with my daughter yesterday, she held my hand and said, ‘Mummy, you’ve gone through so much.’ And I said I had.

“I remember how many of those things I have to relive. I have been raped only once in my life, and I was raped by a colleague. I see him every other day. Do you know how traumatised I am? When I see him, I just get into this momentary panic.

Actress Omotunde Adebowale-David aka Lolo1 has expressed concerns over the growing public acceptance of s3x work, stating it devalues hard work and effort.

Speaking on ‘In My Opinion’ podcast, she openly said s3x work sends the wrong message to young people striving to succeed through legitimate means.

She said: “If you can blatantly come out and say you are a s3x worker, you asked someone for money, and I got it and bought a car… And when you told me she bought a house, she bought this, what do you think every other average person would look at?

“S3x workers are downplaying the value of hard work. They are downplaying the value of sweating, of growing something, of doing legitimate work. I keep telling women in my circle that your body is not a shop. Maybe, I belong to an extinct or slowly dying generation.

“But for somebody to blatantly come out and say this is what I do for money, I’m beginning to rethink many things, okay, society has lost its sense of shame. Then let’s just make it a legitimate thing.

Lolo1 argued that s3x workers diminish the importance of hard work, suggesting that the increasing acceptance of s3x work may eventually lead to its legitimisation as a profession.

“Some of them would even tell you they don’t kill anybody, ‘my body my choice ‘ so if this has become a thing, the time for legitimising it is coming close.

“So the same way people can call themselves bankers and oil workers, you can totally say you’re a sex worker. Gone are the days when there was nothing to show for it, now if you see the way these ladies live ehn”, she added.

She wrote: “I feel bad for Nigerians, I feel bad because are the facts not glaring? I don’t know much about data but the data is literally in your face. It shows that we are making the lives of foreign countries easier.

“People would rather suffer there and pay high school fees than be here and have relative ease. There are some people abroad that whose living conditions are so terrible and degrading but they would rather stay there managing because at least they are managing where there is constant electricity.

“They are managing but the roads are pliable. They are managing but at least they can still find transportation. But look at us here, if you enter a bus and people see you, they attribute your life to poverty and that’s not true. I don’t want to drive every day, but look at what is happening in the county. Even feeding is expensive here”.
