Pastor Esther Ajayi makes waves in London

FROM homelessness to superstardom and from an unknown furniture seller to a hot cake in the Christian world, the rise of Pastor Esther Ajayi is like a Hollywood movie. Like the famed heroine in a popular story, the experienced woman of God had suffered many setbacks, but she kept believing. Now the small-time pastor who could not keep the few church members she had has become a pastor to billionaires.

Pastor Esther’s Love of Christ Generation Church C & S, located on Clapham Road, London, has become the choice worship centre for billionaires and the children of the Nigerian elites based in London. Her influence over the Christian community in the UK is growing steadily. Her church, which is said to have cost more than five million pounds to acquire and renovate, plays hosts to affluent and well-connected Nigerians on a regular basis.

And while she is popular in London, she is by no means an unknown quantity in Nigeria. Not too long ago, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, conferred on her the title of Iya Aladura of Ile-Ife, in recognition of her zeal for spreading the word of God.

Her London church has at several times played host to household names in gospel music, including Ebenezer Obey, Yinka Ayefele, Atorise, Rev. Bayo Adelakun of the Ayewa fame, among others.

My son is alive, strong, healthy – Okorocha

Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo says his first son, Mr Ahamefula Okorocha is alive, strong and healthy, contrary to social media reports on Sunday that he died in London.

The Social Media on Sunday went wild with reports that the governor’s son, Ahamefula Brendan Rocha, had died at The Royal London Hospital located at White chapel Road.

However, Okorocha’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr Sam Onwuemeodo, has dispelled the claims, describing those behind the reports as agents of Satan.

Okorocha said: “The young engineer is doing very well in his profession.

“How could anybody ever wish his fellow human dead?

“This is strange and we all should discourage this kind of insinuation.’’

The governor recalled that he was recently reported to have died when he travelled overseas on a business trip shortly after he had announced plans to relocate the ancient Ekeukwu Owerri market, situated at the heart of the city.

Other markets marked for relocation are the popular Ama Hausa market, the yam traders and all traders along Douglas road in the capital city, Owerri.

The state government had directed traders in the markets to move out of the affected places to their new locations by Sept. 30, 2016.

The relocation issue had been enmeshed in protest by Owerri women and a court case between the Owerri Indigenes and the state government before the market was eventually relocated on Aug. 26, 2017.

According to Okorocha, the false report on the death of his son is coming only two weeks after the relocation of the market.

“God is the giver of life and nobody can determine how God does his things.

“The general public should disregard such report,” he said.

Protesters move sit-outs to Lagos, London

The #OurMumuDonDo members yesterday announced the suspension of their sit-outs in Abuja, following the Tuesday’s attack on them at the Wuse Market.

The group said its sit-outs will continue to hold in Lagos daily and at the Abuja House in London on Friday.

The group issued a 21-day ultimatum to President Muhammadu Buhari to resume or resign from office.

Failure to do that, the group said it would seek a court order compelling the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to set up a committee to appraise the President’s health to determine if he is fit to continue running the country.

The group said this would be done in line with Section 144 of the Constitution (as amended).

Charly Boy stated that the suspension of the protest in Abuja was to enable the coalition to re-strategise on ways to make their processions less open to violent attacks.

This, he said, would better ensure the safety of members and other participants at sit-outs and peaceful processions in future.

He said his movement was not deterred by the harassment unleashed on them by the police and hoodlums.

  • My health has improved, but waiting on Doctors’ orders, says Buhari

My health has improved, but waiting on Doctors’ orders, says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that he is okay but has to obey his doctors orders in London.

Buhari had left Nigeria on May 7th to meet up follow up consultation with his doctors in the United Kingdom.

Stressing that there is tremendous improvement in his health, he said that he really wished to return home.

He spoke while receiving the presidential media team, and the Senior Special Assistant on Diaspora Matters, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, at Abuja House, London, on Saturday.

The team was led by Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture, accompanied by Mr Femi Adesina, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity; Mallam Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, and Lauretta Onochie, Personal Assistant on Digital/Online Media.

Buhari, in a statement issued by Adesina, said “But I’ve learnt to obey my doctor’s orders, rather than be the one issuing the orders. Here, the doctor is absolutely in charge.”

When the team expressed delight at the much improved health of the President, he retorted: “I feel I could go home, but the doctors are in charge. I’ve now learnt to obey orders, rather than be obeyed.”

On how he felt hearing different conjectures about his health, an amused President Buhari said he followed events at home closely, lauding Nigerian television stations, and the media generally, for keeping him informed.

When told that prayers were going on fervently for him, not only in Nigeria, but all over Africa, and round the world, a delighted President said: “What we did in The Gambia early this year fetched us a lot of goodwill on the African continent. It gave us a lot of latitude. I thank all those who are praying. May God reward them.”

President Buhari, the statement said, sent appreciation to all Nigerians, expressing hope that he would be with them soon.

  • Let’s go to London

FOR Nigeria, London is now the new Mecca. Somehow, I keep having this nagging feeling that what is cooking in London is more than the intriguing sauce of get-well-soon visitation to ailing President Muhammadu Buhari by his associates, his detractors and nosey packers who forever long for firsthand information on how well, or unwell, the President has been doing. The rate at which the hawks gather at the Abuja House in London these days should attract the curiosity of political pundits. The sudden upsurge in human traffic to that particular house is a pointer to the troubling spike in the temperature of our politics.

On one hand is a President who is still under strict medical observations by his team of doctors. And, on the other hand, is a coalition of cold-blooded, sniggering pretenders who would give anything to actualise their fatal wish that, by some twist of fate, the President becomes permanently incapacitated so that they can unfold their vaulting ambition with relish. However, since the rash of visits has been softened with the humane touch, the hypocrisy on display is likely to be dismissed with a wave of the hand. But that would be a dangerous thing to do considering the capacity of the average Nigerian politician for mischief. Who knows what is buried beneath the plastic laughter we see on those faces? Don’t get it twisted, nothing best describes the pall of distrust hanging over the country than this latest pilgrimage to the United Kingdom by different categories of highly-placed Nigerians to, once again, wish the President soonest recovery.

What it means is that not many of these persons believed Acting President Yemi Osinbajo when he said he met Buhari in high spirits during his one-hour interaction with him some weeks back. There is no gainsaying the fact that Aisha Buhari’s encouraging accounts about how her husband would soon return to deal with the hyenas and jackals slowing down the business of governance in his administration only fetched whiff of palpable skepticism. Many are too far in their wild thinking that it was practically impossible for them to see a convalescing Buhari dishing out orders from the presidential seat.

The fatalists among them had, in more than one occasion, killed and buried Buhari. It appeared they were only waiting for an official announcement so that an end could be put to the running soap. So, instead of seeing a living Buhari, they what they saw was a ghost! Things had gone that awfully awry before some All Progressives Congress governors and select members of the party dashed to the UK, to check on the President. If the delegation thought the picture that was released on the visit would douse the anxiety over the true status of the health of the President, then they must be living in Mars.

The picture, which showed Buhari comfortably seated in the dining lounge with the delegation, ignited fresh even if annoying questions from those who seem to be versed in the delicate art of diagnosing diseases through images. In spite of the array of fresh fruits on the table and the confirmation that Buhari not only enjoyed his lunch but also laughed over rumours of his ill health, his critics said the picture left many hanging questions unanswered.

They wanted to know why his poise and gait in the picture looked like that of someone that has been confined to the chair. Some said his looks betrayed the mien of someone in high spirits as testified by Osinbajo. Others said he was missing in another group photograph allegedly published by an online portal showing all the members of the delegation comprising Umar Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State, APC National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, Rochas Okorocha of Imo, Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna and Yahaya Bello of Kogi.

If you thought those posers were mundane, then you’ve not heard it all. Less than 24 hours after Okorocha spoke about the President they dined with and Al-Makura swore that the man was not condemned to the chair, one privileged, Cambridge-trained charlatan took over the cyberspace to claim that the photograph was actually shot at the Presidential Villa when that particular delegation broke the Muslim fast with Buhari.

His loud-mouthed counterpart, who had initially threatened to display Buhari’s picture on life support at a London hospital and vowed to commit suicide if proven otherwise, did everything criminally possible to rubbish the claim that the President was getting better and would soon be here with us if his doctors give him the green light. And there was another who faulted the authenticity of the journey just because a member of the delegation was seen at his Maitama residence in Abuja the following Monday. He wondered how someone who was in the UK on Sunday could be sipping tea in his Abuja mansion the next day.

Can you see how petty and irresponsibly stupid we have become? Shouldn’t it be clear to this Buhari-must-remain-sick activist that London is just some six hours to Abuja and it shouldn’t be rocket science to decipher why our man was home with his family? Be that as it may, I’ve once argued on this page that Nigerians deserve to know certain things about the health status of their President no matter how bad the news may be. If anything, the secrecy with which this matter is being handled has impacted the discourse negatively. Buhari’s minders should have known that the resort to feeding the public with his cameo appearances in his living room or dinner table with select groups would eventually backfire. It is either they come up with full disclosures or they forever remain silent as they did for many months. Commonsense and logic dictate that if the President was fit enough to throw banters at the dining table; he should be hale enough to speak with his subjects for some few minutes either in recorded audio or video.

Unfortunately, that never happened even during this last trip. Instead Nigerians were treated to third or fourth party narratives on how well the President was faring. This time, the Peoples Democratic Party was right when it accused the ruling government of being unfair to millions of its supporters. In the words of the party’s spokesman, Dayo Adeyeye, there was something unnerving about the APC’s approach with regards to the President’s health.

The fact that the President’s second medical journey has lasted close to three months means that the general public deserves concrete and verifiable reasons to justify the prolonged stay and not the cocktail of half-truths it is being fed with. And so, I align with Adeyeye when he quipped that: “It is very unfair to keep Nigerians in the dark concerning the health of the President only to be circulating just one photograph in the media for people who have been praying for the recovery of our President all this while.”

Let’s face it, it is the atmosphere of doubts that the APC created, more than anything else, which has resulted in the kinds of tourism jamboree we have witnessed in the last few days. In spite of Buhari’s letter to the Guinean President, Alpha Conde, that he was “making good progress” and “shall return to my duties and continue serving the Nigerian people,” another set of powerful delegate made of up seven governors from the six geo-political zones flew into London on Wednesday to dine, drink and discuss with him. For the first time, governors from the opposition PDP made the list even if the President’s fiercest critics were excluded.

The hope is that whatever fabulous tales the latest tourists come up with should finally put an end to the gale of doubts. But is that feasible? I honestly doubt because probing questions are being asked on the ‘state of the President’s left arm and other sundry matters” by these sworn critics.

They just cannot believe it! And that was after Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State said Buhari’s recovery was nothing but a miracle. As things stand today, even a benevolent pessimist in that group would tell you that it is practically impossible to erase the doubts over the President’s health without flying some notable key stakeholders to London to also pally with Buhari and medically certify him hale and hearty with their eyes. After the governors, close aides and party loyalists have taken turns to eat at Baba’s table, it is not unlikely that the next set of influence peddlers on the line to spend tax payers’ money on this medical visitation jamboree would be the leadership of both chambers in the National Assembly after which other associations would make a case for their inclusion. Already, feelers have it that a group of journalists is already lobbying to be sponsored by the government to visit London and bring ‘eyewitness reports’ to his teeming supporters.

The way things work here, it wouldn’t be a surprise if members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, National Association of Market Women, Association of Meat Sellers, National Association of Nigerians Students, Association Bakery Owners, Rice Millers Incorporated, Millet Merchants United, Nigeria Labour Congress, The Buhari Support Group, Women for Buhari, Men for Buhari, Coalition of No Vacancy in Aso Rock in 2019, It’s Buhari or Nothing Solidarity Group and all other shades of groups push for their immediate and urgent inclusion on the list of those that should be on this “seeing is believing critical trip” in order to confirm to the suffering masses how their President has been eating his fruits, enjoying his ‘fura’ and drinking his ‘kunu’ with a wild grin of satisfaction on his face in London.

That’s how we do it here. Now, let no one ask me where the funding for this all important junketing would be coming from since we are in a season of change. In times like this, there is always contingency plan to accommodate inanities in the name of political correctness. Or was it not reported that Wednesday’s visit by the seven governors was organised by the Office of the National Security Adviser? If I may ask: which is more believable between a five-minute video recording of our recuperating President and these endless junkets in and out of London? The choice cannot be that difficult for those who know how to make maximum gain from the simplest of things. Please, let’s go to London!

Buhari, Osinbajo meet in London on state of nation

Acting President gets first-hand information on President’s well-being

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday dashed to London for a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari. It was Prof. Osinbajo’s first visit since the President left for London on May 7 on medical vacation.

The visit enabled him to brief the President on how he has been steering the ship of state. Sources said it also enabled him to have first-hand knowledge about the President’s well-being.

The President left for a second medical vacation on May 7. His ailment has not been disclosed.

There were indications that Prof. Osinbajo may have obtained the President’s consent to carry out some major reforms and fill some strategic positions.

The inauguration of Prof. Stephen Ocheni (Kogi) and Mr Suleiman Hassan (Gombe) as ministers was said to be on the cards.

Ocheni is to replace the former Minister of State Labour James Ocholi, who died in an accident; Hassan will replace Mrs Amina Mohammed, who is now United Nations Deputy Secretary General. Both have been cleared by the Senate.

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that Osinbajo’s shuttle to London was carried out through “covert diplomatic and intelligence methods.”

Most of Osinbajo’s key aides and cabinet members were oblivious of the trip. After making a brief remark at a Presidential Quarterly Business Forum at the old Banquet Hall of the State House, Abuja, the Acting President did not return to his office but headed straight for the airport.

A top source, who spoke in confidence, said: “The trip was carefully planned and silently executed in order to prevent it from being aborted.

“The Acting President has actually been relying on third party information and purported directives from the President in London.

“But since the President has shut out some of these forces from seeing him, it became important for the Acting President to meet with the President.

“The Acting President went with a tight entourage and the trip was closely guarded.  All the influence peddlers were not in the picture of the trip.”

Another source said: “The trip had been planned in the past three weeks but was only known to few people for strategic reasons. The ‘Jackals and Hyenas’ were beaten to it.

“The Acting President went to London to wish his boss well, get undiluted information on his health, brief the President on certain decisions he had taken and seek his approval for some appointments and outstanding reforms in government.

“Some members of the cabinet have not been committed to Osinbajo’s acting presidency too.

“Other parts of Osinbajo’s visit were the need to clear misgivings about some of the steps he has taken, especially the need to clarify that he is not executing any anti-North agenda and the alleged accusation of abandoning the President’s agenda.

“Some of those who has access to the President had painted a wrong picture of the situation at home in order to create a wedge between him and Prof. Osinbajo.

“The trip was laced with some diplomatic and intelligence coordination. Most cabinet members and key aides were caught unawares”.

The source added: “So far, the trip is fruitful and the Acting President will be able to do certain things including the inauguration of the two ministers.

“I think we should expect some radical changes after this trip. The two leaders discussed extensively on some directions.”

Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the Acting President Laolu Akande spoke with our correspondent at about 7.38pm yesterday from London.

He confirmed that Osinbajo was in London to meet with the President but he did not give any details.

He released a terse tweet: “Ag. President Osinbajo meeting with President Buhari in London today (yesterday) and returning to Abuja immediately afterwards.”

  • Why presidential jet will continue to stay in London with Buhari

Why presidential jet will continue to stay in London with Buhari

The Presidency on Thursday defended the retention of the Presidential Aircraft, NAF 001, in London where President Muhammadu Buhari is currently receiving medical attention

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in a statement  in Abuja said the decision was  borne out protocol, national security, diplomacy and prestige.

    The statement read:

“The Presidency is constrained to decry criticisms, mostly on social media, on the retention in London of the Presidential Aircraft, NAF 001 as mostly informed by lack of understanding of protocol around foreign trips by Heads of State all over the world.

“It is important to state that for reasons of protocol, national security, diplomacy and prestige, there is no world leader who travels abroad and is left without plans for immediate return or possible evacuation.

“From operational point of view, this country’s Armed Forces as represented by the Nigeria Air Force are not to abandon their Commander-In-Chief in whichever circumstance he is. This is a standard operating procedure.”

“We have also read claims about outrageous fees allegedly paid by Nigeria. The published amounts are totally untrue. Aircraft conveying Heads of State all over the world usually enjoy waivers even where payments for parking are differentiated by aircraft categories.

“We have been assured that where the waiver is not granted, payment will not exceed £1,000, which is a quarter of the amount being peddled.

“For the avoidance of doubt, this President is not the first to have a presidential aircraft standing by for him, as he will certainly not be the last. All past Heads of this country have had this privilege, and the part that surprises the most is that leaders who in the past travelled with three Nigerian aircraft did not suffer this trenchant criticism.

“We appeal to Nigerians to ignore opposition campaign aimed at derailing this administration’s big plans for the country.

“This is a government that is constructing the Second Niger Bridge, the Mambila Power Plant, the East-West and the North-South standard gauge railway lines.

“We are a government that has saved this country an annual loss of two trillion Naira from fraudulent petroleum subsidy schemes by influential citizens and their children and rid the public service of about 50,000 ghost workers.

“The Buhari administration certainly deserves a chance.”
