    • Faction kicks, vows to upturn judgment of lower court on appeal

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has removed the names of the Julius Abure-led executive of the Labour Party from its portal following its sack by the Federal High Court.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Obiora Ifoh, confirmed this in a statement in Abuja yesterday.

The party described the decision by the commission as “strange,” vowing to protest it.

It said that the judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja as well as the removal of the names of its executive from INEC’s portal will not deter its plans to put up a strong show in the 2027 general election.

The party vowed to ensure that the judgment of the lower court is upturned at the Appeal Court.

The party called on Nigerians to rise against the strangulation and monetisation of democracy in the country by a few power-drunks in the country, warning that Nigeria may be heading for the precipice if the inordinate ambitions of some politicians are not checked.

The statement said: “Some persons who are applauding the impunity by some politicians should retrace and do some introspection, because this was how in the past they applauded injustice in our democracy because they were beneficiaries.

“At the end of the day when their enthroned leaders began to abuse power, they started complaining.

“For us in Labour Party, our faith is strong that the appellate court will do the right thing and therefore we advise our members to remain calm. We will continue with the struggle to take our party from the godfather.

“Labour Party is a party that is based on social democracy where no one man is permitted to appoint everybody.

“It is against the principles of the party that one man will sit at a place and gather everybody and appoint everybody from the National Working Committee to the state, down to the ward executive.

“That is impunity of the highest order. This, I believe, negates the principles of the party.

“If we say there is no party ideology in Nigeria, this is how it starts.

“We are very sure that it will be quashed on appeal.

“The celebration of the Abia state governor, Alex Otti, Nenadi Usman and their cohorts on the appearance of their names on the INEC portal will be short-lived.

“It is for a short time. Their victory is pyrrhic and there is nothing to celebrate because the doomsday is closer than they will imagine; which I believe will be very catastrophic for them.

“Moreover, it is very clear that the appointment of the caretaker committee did not go through the normal procedure. Proper notice was not given in line with the party constitution and the electoral act.”

Peter Obi’s defection sparks major LP exodus to ADC in Delta

The defection of the former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has set off a significant political shift in Delta State, prompting LP’s 2023 governorship candidate, Deacon Ken Pela, to lead a large contingent of party figures into the ADC.

Pela, alongside LP candidates for the National Assembly, Delta State House of Assembly, and various local government councils, formally joined the ADC on January 7 at a well-attended event in Asaba.

Receiving the new members, Delta State Chairman of the ADC, Austin Okolie, described the development as a landmark moment for the state’s political landscape.

“Today’s gathering is historic. It represents a major political realignment in Delta State and a bold signal to Nigeria that a new progressive coalition is taking shape ahead of the 2027 general elections,” Okolie said.

He noted that the attendance of national and zonal party leaders underscored the ADC’s expanding influence, adding that the party is growing at the grassroots while remaining aligned with its national objectives.

In his remarks, Pela said his move was motivated by the search for a value-driven political platform committed to service delivery and institutional reform.

“Delta State is richly endowed but weighed down by broken trust and political culture that rewards noise over substance. We need a politics anchored in responsibility and service. That is why I have chosen ADC, a platform that places values above individuals and judges governance by results, not rhetoric,” he said.

Pela also cited Nigeria’s worsening insecurity and economic hardship, noting that over 130 million Nigerians live in multidimensional poverty, and called for a united front to restore public trust and hope.

His defection was formalised with the presentation of his resignation letter from the LP and his pledge to uphold ADC’s constitution, values and ideals.

Receiving the defectors on behalf of the national leadership, ADC National Chief Whip, Elder Festus Igbinoba, representing the National Chairman, David Mark, described Pela’s move as part of a wider trend.

“This is a convergence of value. The ADC continues to attract leaders dedicated to discipline, institutional growth, and people-focused governance,” Igbinoba said, urging the new members to work collectively for electoral success.

Similarly, ADC Deputy National Chairman, Senator Andrew Uchendu, said Pela’s entry reflected the party’s growing national appeal.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of ADC membership cards to Pela and his supporters by the ADC Chairman of Jeremi Ward 2, marking their formal induction.

The ceremony was attended by prominent party leaders, including Chike Okogwu, National PWD Leader; Mabel Oboh, South-South Zonal Publicity Secretary; Ebilade Keefe, South-South Zonal Secretary; Dr Bright Honda, South-South Zonal Youth Leader; Mrs Joy Mena, Delta State Woman Leader; Faith Okolo; Lady Chinwe Ejido; Lauretta Onochie; and other party stakeholders.

Fubara loyalists, LP member defects to APC

Three loyalists of Rivers state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and a member of the Labour Party, on Thursday, announced their defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the prolonged crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The members who defected from the PDP to the APC are Boniface Emerengwa, Boma Goodhead, and Awaji Nombet Abiante from the PDP and Manuchin Umezuruike from the Labour Party to the APC.

The letters of defection of the four lawmakers were read at plenary on Thursday by the Speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen.

Abiante and the other two members, who are close associates of Rivers state Governor, said they were leaving the PDP to join the APC as a result of the protracted and unresolved crisis in the PDP.

Umezuruike, on his part, said he was leaving the Labour Party due to the lingering litigations, adding that it is not as a result of personal interest, but the interest of his people.

This will bring the number of members on the APC platform to about 250

  • APC, LP align on Anambra’s poor performance rating

APC, LP align on Anambra’s poor performance rating

    • It’s politically motivated, says Soludo

The two main opposition parties in Anambra State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Labour Party (LP), have aligned with the recent index rating released by Phillips Consulting Limited.

According to the 2025 Phillips Consulting State Performance Index (PSPI), Anambra State was ranked 3rd in the country on a functional basic education facility to population ratio.

The report highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of the state in 2025 while gauging citizens’ satisfaction on a host of issues like quality of roads, security, and the state of public hospitals.

The state also ranked 33rd in capital expenditure per capita, reflecting limited reinvestment into public infrastructure.

On public healthcare, the PSPI report ranked Anambra 30th in the nation, reflecting a drop in health service delivery.

The organisation also placed Anambra State second to the last in Nigeria, a little above Zamfara State.

Reacting to the slide in the performance rating, the Anambra State Chairman of the APC, Sir Basil Ejidike, described the current administration of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)  in Anambra as the worst in the country in terms of infrastructure, Insecurity and other crimes.

Ejidike, while speaking with The Nation on the phone Friday, said the report by the PCL should be the kind any reasonable person who had the interest of the state at heart would give.

He said the Anambra State governor, Prof Charles Soludo, had failed the people and residents in every way, adding that the infrastructural decay, killings, kidnappings, including other crimes had taken over the state, adding that the APC had heard the cries and lamentations of the people already.

“APGA is not a political party; they are only in the state by default. The only state they are holding at the juggler while the people live in bondage. We commend PCL for its sincere assessment.”

Also, the governorship candidate of the Labour Party in the state, Dr George Moghalu, did not hesitate in heaping praises on the PCL for what he described as its honest rating

Sir Paul Chukwuma of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) told The Nation that the opinion of PCL had been what everybody had been saying, adding that Soludo and his party had failed the people of Anambra State.

    Report politically motivated, says Soludo

While the organisation rated Anambra state as one of the worst in insecurity and infrastructure, the government described the rating as politically motivated.

Speaking with The Nation on Friday in Awka, Anambra State’s Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mafor, described those behind such a rating as being blind, adding that the literacy level of the state alone stands at 92.7%.

“Some people are sponsoring nonsense because of the election. All these are pure politics. The literacy level of Anambra alone is 92.7% and yet, we are rated alongside Zamfara, Borno and Yobe States.

“They should go and emulate organisations such as UNICEF, who are seeing clearly and check the recent Peer Review of the organisation and how Anambra State is placed.

“This government of Governor Soludo is a busy one and not ready to engage in altercations with anyone or group because the people are seeing with their eyes that their votes in the 2021 election were not in vain because of the administration’s performance.

“Let’s talk about performance a little. What is infrastructure? They are building schools. Are hospitals not part of it? Such projects made Soludo win awards as the Best Governor in this country from reputable organisations.

“This administration has built five brand new general hospitals in this state in addition to the three the state had before, bringing the number to eight. Which state in Nigeria can boast of that?

“It is like my own meaning of infrastructure is different from what others know. Today, almost 600 kilometres of roads have been asphalted, and many more are ongoing. Is that what some groups of people call under-performance?”

“We have over 200 upgraded schools, brand new government house in Anambra, which is only second to Aso Rock in this country. This government has done Amawbia -Ekwulobia- Uga road Federal highway. Are they not part of infrastructure and social amenities?

“Is water not part of infrastructure? The state is offering free education. How many States in Nigeria are doing that? People should look for other things to talk about, and not about performance by the Prof Chukwuma Soludo government, because no state comes second to Anambra, and that is why everybody in the state is saying, Solution is here.”

Mefor said as far as he was concerned, the entire index performance ratio boiled down to politics because the election was close, adding, ” they are sponsored “

Also, in a statement by the commissioner for Budget and Planning, Chiamaka Nnake, the office rejected the report, saying the PCL 2025 report produced results that were not only misleading but risk damaging its own professional reputation.

“Phillips Consulting Limited, once renowned for its expertise in human resource services, now appears to have veered into areas far beyond its traditional competence. Everyone now rushes into the business of ‘ranking’ as the fad in town.

“While it is not wrong for a firm to broaden its scope, such ventures demand rigorous training, capacity development, and methodological soundness. Without these, credibility is compromised, and reputations are put at risk.

“The 2025 PCL State Performance Index raises fundamental questions: What capacity does PCL have to rank Nigerian states?

“How was this research designed, and on what basis were such sweeping conclusions drawn?”

    • Ex-banker to run for governor

Ahead of the 2026 governorship election in Ekiti State, African Democratic Congress (ADC) has received a major boost with the defection of members from All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party (LP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP).

A former banker and a philanthropist, Adeyinka Alli, has formally declare his intention to run for governor on the ADC platform.

The defectors, who converged on Itapa-Ekiti in Oye Local Government, said their decision to leave their former parties was to back the governorship aspiration of Alli.

One of the defectors, Alice Olorunwa, said their decision was driven by the conviction that Alli represented fresh hope for the state.

“We are from different parties – APC, PDP, LP and SDP. Our decision to defect to the ADC is in a bid to support the governorship aspiration of a kinsman and philanthropist, Adeyinka Alli, on the coalition platform,” she said.

Receiving the new members, the ADC Deputy Chairman in Ekiti, Dare Adekolu, assured them that the coalition party was not only prepared for the 2026 race, but also determined to present a credible alternative to the ruling APC.

Adekolu said the party was committed to delivering a people-oriented government that would address the challenges facing the state.

Alli said he was motivated by the need to rescue Ekiti from what he described as economic stagnation and infrastructural decay.

He lamented that the state’s economy was “in a state of comatose.”

ADC state Chairman, Omolayo Ilesanmi, hailed Alli for throwing his hat into the ring, describing him as a competent, courageous and visionary leader, who could chart a new course for the state.

LP faction: it’s mockery of democracy

The Nenadi Usman-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has rejected the outcome of Saturday’s by-elections.

On Sunday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the results of the by-elections across 16 constituencies in the country.

The ruling All Progressives Party (APC) was the dominant party when the results of the by-elections, conducted to fill vacant seats in the national assembly and state houses of assembly, were announced.

Reacting to the outcome of the elections in a statement issued by Ken Asogwa, her senior special adviser on media, Usman alleged that the exercise was characterised by vote-buying, violence and collusion between the APC and security agencies.

She said the results of the polls showed that INEC, under the leadership of Mahmoud Yakubu, had failed to redeem its “battered image” after the 2023 general election.

“What transpired across Nigeria on Saturday in the name of by-elections was nothing short of a mockery of democracy, a travesty of justice against the Nigerian people, and a dangerous dress rehearsal of what may befall us in 2027 if citizens do not act swiftly to halt this brigandage,” the statement reads.

JUST IN: Former LP deputy gov candidate Awude dumps Peter Obi, leads scores to join APC in Ondo

A former deputy governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the November 16, 2023, gubernatorial election in Ondo State, Hon Dayo Awude, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Awude, a great supporter of opposition leader, Peter Obi of the LP, with scores of his supporters and members of the Sunshine grassroots Network (SGN) across the 18 local government areas of the state, were warmly received into the fold of the APC by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa in Akure on Monday.

A former stalwart of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before joining the LP, Awude defected to the APC alongside the former chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the state, Dele Ogunbamerun.

Speaking at the defection ground held at the Akure Town Hall, Awude disclosed that his decision to join the APC with his supporters was informed by the development strides of Governor Aiyedatiwa and the progressive achievements of President Bola Tinubu.

He noted that he and his group of supporters, especially in the Akure axis, have come over to the governing party to add value and ensure that President Tinubu gets an overwhelming victory in 2027.

“The current President [Tinubu] is our son in the Southwest. Should we now open our eyes to allow some people to chase him away in the 2027 general election? No. We must come under this party to ensure he is victorious.

“Yoruba land must be great. We must join hands for its progress. We have come to add value to the APC. I can assure Mr Governor [Aiyedatiwa] that our coming to the party will increase support, especially for President Bola Tinubu.

“So, I’m asking our people to go back to their units and wards to get integrated. We are here for progress and to support our son [Tinubu] and to also support the government of Lucky Aiyedatiwa,” he said.

On his part, the former SDP chairman, Dele Ogunbamerun, said their coming to the APC was an opportunity to serve and support President Tinubu’s re-election bid across the length of the state.

“I see our coming as an opportunity to work. I have gone through a lot in other political parties, but I thank God I am now back home. I appreciate Dayo Awude, who leads us into the fold of the APC.”

Welcoming the defectors, the Chairman of the APC in the State, Ade Adetimehin, saluted the courage of Awude for finally pitching his tent with the ruling party.

He also described the former SDP deputy governorship candidate as a man of capacity, whose weight in the politics of Akure is highly respected at his unit and ward levels.

Presenting Awude and his supporters to Governor Aiyedatiwa, the APC chairman further solicited more support for the party ahead of the 2027 general election.

He assured the defectors of a level playing ground in the APC, urging them to begin canvassing for the party from their various units and extend it to the ward level.

“So, I welcome you all to this party, and we are happy to also receive you, but don’t forget that any politician who cannot deliver his unit and ward is not a politician. I urge all our new members to work towards strengthening the party at the grassroots,” Adetimehin said.

Receiving the Awude and his supporters, both from the LP, PDP, and SDP, Governor Aiyedatiwa said the defectors have made the right choice to join the fold of the APC in the state.

The governor urged the decampees to begin grassroots mobilisation in earnest for the party ahead of the general elections, saying the APC must retain power at the federal and state levels.

“You have made the right decision. This is the right place to be because the utmost interest for any political party is to be in power. For us in APC, we want to retain power, and we must do everything that is needed to retain the power.

“We acknowledge that you have decided to join us. Your coming will be rewarded. As you can see, the dividends of good governance are showing themselves under the leadership of President Tinubu and me as your governor in the state,” he said.

“You all can see that our house is APC. Once again, I want to congratulate you for this very wide decision you have made because there’s no alternative to the APC as of today. Our declaration for Asiwaju is that Ondo State is for Tinubu in 2027.”

He added, “The whole of Ondo state for Tinubu come 2027, and to realise that, you have decided to join us. We know winning Ondo state is not an issue, but to have overwhelming votes, and you are the evidence of those votes.

“I salute the Sunshine grassroots Network. (SGN) who are members of different political parties before joining us. So, the remaining votes that we did not get in the last governorship election will now come for President Tinubu. We have enough room to accommodate all of us.”

  • Jubilation as Hamzat floors PDP, LP candidates at polling unit

Jubilation as Hamzat floors PDP, LP candidates at polling unit

Chairman of Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government and All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Usman Hamzat emerged winner at Polling Unit 027, Ward C1, College Road, Ifako-Ijaiye, where he cast his vote, in the local government election.

Jubilant scenes erupted at the polling unit after Presiding Officer, Kareem Aderonke declared Hamzat winner with 335 votes out of 336 valid votes cast among 848 registered voters.

Labour Party (LP) candidate Adedayo Ashade secured one vote, while People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Michael Oloyede recorded no votes.

Voting in Ifako-Ijaiye commenced late, as officials of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) began arriving only at 9:28 a.m., delaying accreditation and voting despite the early turnout of voters from 8 a.m.

Hamzat cast his vote at 10:12 a.m. after arriving at the polling unit with his family at 10:10 a.m.

He expressed confidence in victory despite the late arrival of LASIEC officials.

Speaking after his declaration, Hamzat described voter turnout at his polling unit as satisfactory.

He said voter education had been sufficient despite perceptions to the contrary.

“Well, it’s on the average. If you look at my polling unit now, we have well over 300 voters who came out to vote there. So for me, it’s okay on the average.”

He added that people are generally interested in participating in governance and attributed low participation in some areas to misplaced voter cards and citisens’ perception of local government elections as less important.

“Generally, there’s always a vote in our party, the country generally. People are always interested in being a part of the system and all that. For them saying there is no information or that there was not really much sensitisation on it, I don’t think that is true because I know vividly that INEC and LASIEC organised a lot of sensitisation programmes and engagement with the communities like the Christian Association of Nigeria, the Muslim community, and the youth.

“So, I think some people, a lot of our people, have misplaced their voter cards. Most of them feel because they’ve misplaced it, they cannot vote. I think that’s the major problem. And the fact that people always believe local government is just a local thing and all that, so a lot of our people are not always interested in coming out to discharge their civic responsibility.

“It’s just like when the government said we should register for our NIN and all that; people didn’t go for it. But when they saw that it was going to affect them, they started rushing it. So that’s our system in the country, which is a very bad thing.

“So for me, it’s just the nature of our people. I would just advise that it’s always very important for our people to come out to discharge their civic responsibility by electing into offices their leaders. So that’s my advice to our people,” he said.

On whether full local government autonomy would affect council performance, Hamzat noted that Lagos State local governments already enjoy full autonomy and are performing well.

He said: “Well, first and foremost, since I assumed office, Lagos State local governments have full autonomy. Our funds are always released to us. So for me, and that is why it is majorly in Lagos State that local governments are doing wonderfully well and performing.

“Just recently, we saw a lot of local government chairmen commissioning state-of-the-art public health centres, commissioning road projects and all that. For me, I don’t see it affecting it or anything, but it’s just the people that are not always interested in doing things right. That’s my view about it.”

Meanwhile, Vice Chairman of Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government and APC vice chairmanship candidate Oluwatoyin Awoniyi-Akerele described the election as peaceful and expressed optimism about their re-election.

Awoniyi-Akerele arrived at Polling Unit 023, Ward B, at 11:08 a.m. and voted at 11:23 a.m. She commended the peaceful conduct of the exercise, stating that people were coming out gradually and that all party agents were cooperating.

She said the APC was confident of re-election, having performed well for the community, and assured residents that the administration would continue its good work to deliver the dividends of democracy.

  • Senator Kingibe dumps LP for ADC

Senator Kingibe dumps LP for ADC

Senator Ireti Kingibe has dumped the Labour Party (LP) for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Kingibe, who represents the, Federal Capital (FCT), speaking to journalists in a viral video seen by The Nation, said he has chosen ADC because of the division in the Labour Party (LP).

She said her formal defection would be marked with fanfare at the appropriate time.

Responding to a question, Kingibe said: “I’m totally and completely committed to ADC. But obviously, as the senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, don’t expect me to just take a lunch break and go and collect card. I want to do so with noise and fanfare.”

When asked if she was satisfied with the leadership of ADC and the coalition she was joining, she said, “It’s something that is evolving. So you cannot say while your child is still crawling that you are not happy with how he’s going to run. You wait. We are growing.”

Responding to concerns that her defection might cost her the senate seat based on constitutional provisions, Kingibe said the Labour Party has since been split into two factions, a situation which, she argued, legally allowed her to move.

“I ask you to please read the constitution. There are two factions clearly of Labour Party. The perfect definition that the constitution gives for somebody to decamp without penalty.

“So you say I should stay in Labour Party. Which faction of Labour Party do you want me to stay in?

“There are two clear distinct ones. Even INEC got two sets of results and candidates, though they didn’t accept any. There’s no question of that.

“Even the time when we didn’t have two clear factions, did you see anybody implementing it?

“But I do follow the law. And if there were not two distinct factions of Labour Party, I would not presume to decamp, because that is unconstitutional. But they are.

“And this is the definition that the constitution gave why it would be okay to decamp to anywhere I wanted to go to. I just chose ADC,” Kingibe said.

Kingibe was one of the political figures spotted at the unveiling of ADC as the platform of the opposition coalition in Abuja on July 2.

Akpanke expressed appreciation to the PDP for allowing him to fly its flag.

He regretted that the absence of peace in the party necessitated his decision to move to another party.
