    ….sets to unveil Omoluabi Ambassadors

The Ondo State Government has unveiled plans to introduce a mobile application designed to curb the spread of fake news across the state.

Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Akure, the state capital.

He explained that the initiative aligns with Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s digital agenda to tackle misinformation while enhancing government–citizen engagement.

“The app will help combat fake news, facilitate opinion polls, gather news from the grassroots, and serve as a feedback mechanism for the public,” Ajanaku said in the statement signed by the ministry’s Information Manager, Abiodun Omotoso.

The commissioner further noted that the state government will soon roll out additional strategic initiatives aimed at promoting ethical values, strengthening media relations, and fostering inclusive governance.

As part of the plan, Ajanaku disclosed that a statewide campaign against social vices will be launched, engaging stakeholders such as market women, students, religious leaders, traditional rulers, NGOs, and civil servants to drive what he described as a “moral rebirth.”

“The campaign against social vices will be all-inclusive, involving market women, students, religious leaders, traditional rulers, NGOs, and civil servants, to ensure a statewide moral rebirth,” he added.

He noted that outstanding indigenes who have excelled in their various fields will be unveiled as “Omoluabi Ambassadors of Ondo State” to serve as role models for others.

In a related development, Ajanaku confirmed that the state government has approved the purchase of a state-of-the-art transmitter for the Ondo State RadioVision Corporation (OSRC) Television, a move that will improve signal reach and fast-track the station’s inclusion on DSTV.

To further enhance communication with the people, the commissioner said adhoc media officers will be deployed across the 203 wards in the state as grassroots correspondents to ensure citizens’ voices are heard.

Ajanaku reiterated the administration’s commitment to delivering on its OUR EASE agenda, assuring that the dividends of good governance will soon be evenly felt across all localities.

“This is a new dawn for Ondo State,” he said.

Constitution Review: Southwest govs back state police, resource control, others

…Demand true federalism, creation of new states
…as monarchs, stakeholders push for Igbomina State

Governors of Ondo, Ekiti, and Osun States, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Abiodun Oyebanji, and Ademola Adeleke, have called for far-reaching constitutional amendments, including the establishment of state police, resource control, and the restructuring of Nigeria’s federal system to reflect true federalism.

The governors made these demands on Friday during the South-West Centre B Public Hearing of the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review, held at the International Centre for Culture and Events (The Dome) in Akure, Ondo State.

Governor Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State, in his submission, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for initiating key democratic reforms and lauded the House Committee, led by Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, for taking the review process to the grassroots.

He argued that the current centralised policing model was no longer effective in combating rising insecurity and proposed a constitutional amendment to allow for state police. Citing the achievements of the Amotekun Corps in the South-West, Aiyedatiwa said decentralised policing would enhance intelligence gathering, community engagement, and crime deterrence.

The Ondo governor also advocated a review of the revenue allocation formula, proposing that states should retain at least 50 percent of revenues generated, while remitting 40 percent to the federal government. He stressed that true federalism must include fiscal autonomy, allowing states full control over their resources.

“Section 44 (3) of the 1999 Constitution should be amended to move control of minerals, mineral oils, and natural gas from the Exclusive Legislative List to the Concurrent List,” Aiyedatiwa proposed, arguing that states are better positioned to manage their mineral wealth for local development.

He decried the lack of state oversight in mining operations, which he said has led to environmental degradation, illegal mining, and poor enforcement.

On local governance, Aiyedatiwa requested constitutional recognition for the 33 Local Council Development Authorities (LCDAs) established by the Ondo State government, in the same manner that Lagos State’s LCDAs are being considered. He also backed the creation of new states but opposed the excision of any part of Ondo territory to form or merge with another state.

Ekiti State Governor Abiodun Oyebanji, represented by the Attorney General of the State, Dayo Apata (SAN), echoed the call for resource control and decentralised policing. He added that the constitution must reflect inclusive governance by ensuring equal political representation for women and persons with disabilities.

Oyebanji also called for the formal recognition of traditional institutions and restrictions on the unregulated movement of herders and livestock, a factor he said has contributed to rising insecurity and farmer-herder clashes across the country.

In his own remarks, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, represented by his deputy, Prince Kola Adewusi, focused on electoral reforms and the need to curb the soaring cost of governance. He advocated for the adoption of electronic voting and called for stronger regulations on campaign financing.

“The cost of governance is too high. We must make public office less attractive to reduce the desperation that fuels electoral malpractice,” he said.

Traditional rulers also made a case for constitutional inclusion. Speaking on behalf of the monarchs, the Olowo of Owo and Chairman of the Ondo State Council of Obas, Oba Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, urged the National Assembly to grant formal constitutional roles to traditional rulers, whom he described as vital to grassroots governance and social cohesion.

Earlier, Hon. James Faleke, Chairman of the South-West Centre B of the Constitution Review Committee, assured the gathering that all position papers submitted would be thoroughly reviewed and taken into account in the next phase of the constitutional amendment process.

Stakeholders from labour unions, civil society organisations, religious groups, professional associations, and women’s groups across the three states also presented proposals on key issues ranging from devolution of powers to strengthening democratic institutions.

The public hearing was part of a nationwide constitutional review process initiated by the House of Representatives to amend provisions of the 1999 Constitution to address longstanding demands for equity, justice, and national development.

Meanwhile, traditional rulers, scholars, and representatives from Osun and Kwara States have also renewed calls for the creation of Igbomina State, insisting it would end centuries of marginalisation and cultural alienation of the Igbomina people.

Speaking before the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review on Friday, led by Hon. James Faleke, the Orangun of Oke-Ila, Oba Adedokun Abolarin, and Dr. Fatai Afolabi, Secretary of the Igbomina Committee, presented a united front in demanding the proposed state.

They were joined by representatives from 16 local government areas, three senatorial districts, district heads, and fellow monarchs including the Olomu of Omu-Aran, Oba Raimi Adeoti.

Dr. Afolabi argued that Igbomina people—descendants of Ile-Ife under the leadership of Ajagunla, the first Orangun of Ila—have endured forced political alignment with the Ilorin Emirate, a system rooted in Fulani conquest and colonial administrative fiat.

He said “The Igbomina migrated from Ile-Ife under the leadership of Ajagunla, who became the first Orangun of Ila. Their natural homeland spans today’s Osun and Kwara States, until the Fulani Jihad of the early 19th century, the River Osin naturally divided the Igbomina domain from Oyo’s direct rule, while the Orangun of Ila governed his people with a participatory Yoruba kingship structure that balanced authority with community consensus.

Aiyedatiwa hails NDDC director executive Abegunde’s Impact on Ondo devt

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has praised the Executive Director of Corporate Services at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Sunday Ifedayo Abegunde, for his outstanding contributions to the development of the state.

The commendation came during the conferment of the chieftaincy title of ‘Asiwaju of Akure Kingdom’ on Abegunde by the Deji of Akureland, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi.

The event, held over the weekend, also marked Chief Abegunde’s 70th birthday and was attended by prominent dignitaries including the Minister of Youth Development, Hon. Ayodele Olawande, Senator Jide Ipinsagba representing Ondo North, and Senator Adegbonmire from Ondo Central.

  • Death for kidnappers

    Death for kidnappers

Ondo joins the train, but is this sufficient as deterrence?

Kidnappers face the gallows in Ondo State if apprehended and convicted of the crime. This is courtesy of a new law being processed by the Lucky Aiyedatiwa  administration. The law, which prescribes capital punishment for kidnappers upon conviction, is a hard tackle by the government on the growing menace of insecurity that has seen a good number of people abducted in the state, as elsewhere, and involving payment of ransoms by victims’ families – in some cases, the death of abductees even where ransoms were paid.

State attorney-general and commissioner for justice, Kayode Ajulo, SAN, said kidnapping and cultism had become major threats to safety and public order, informing the state government’s resolve to strengthen existing legal framework as could deter such crimes and improve the overall security landscape. According to him, a meeting of the state executive council presided over by Governor Aiyedatiwa deliberated on the worsening security trend and adopted proposals that included capital punishment for kidnappers.

The council also resolved that property used as hideouts or operational bases by kidnappers be demolished. “Kidnapping and cultism have become a menace to the peace and safety of residents. We are committed to restoring law and order through robust legal framework,” he noted.

Ajulo spoke against the backdrop of incidents of kidnapping in the state amidst modest gains by security agencies in terms of suspects’ arrest and rescue of victims. Briefing journalists following the weekly state cabinet meeting in Akure, the state capital, he said the proposed law would soon be transmitted to the Ondo State House of Assembly for necessary legislative action. The All Progressives Congress (APC) that controls the executive also has an overwhelming majority in the state legislature and is expected to approve the law.

With the proposed legislation, Ondo joins other states that have stipulated capital punishment for kidnappers in their statute books. The legal framework hitherto is as enacted by the administration of former Governor Olusegun Mimiko, prescribing life imprisonment for the offence of kidnapping in the state. A former House of Assembly speaker, Taofeek Abdulsalam, was last year reported acknowledging that the law was passed by the sixth state assembly. “It was passed into law during our time (sixth assembly) and the penalty is life imprisonment,” he said.

Other officials, however, indicated the possibility of the law being reviewed; among them a former Majority Leader of the state assembly, Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, who was reported saying: “The bill was passed and signed into law by the previous assembly, but we will study and know if it needs to be reviewed or not.”

Kano State has the anti-kidnapping, abduction and forced labour law enacted by the administration of immediate past Governor Abdullahi Ganduje in 2019, and which has been adopted by the incumbent administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. “The law stipulates the death sentence for kidnappers who abduct and kill their victim, while kidnappers who abduct but did not kill their victim, if apprehended and found culpable, would be jailed for life,” Ganduje had said while signing the bill into law.

In Benue State, there is the anti-kidnapping law that stipulates death sentence for abductors, which the administration of Governor Hyacinth Alia inherited from the former Samuel Ortom administration. It was former Governor Ortom who signed into law the Abduction, Hostage-taking, Kidnapping, Secret Cult and Other Related Offences Act, 2017, which further prescribes, among other things, that anyone whose house was used for unlawful detention and kidnapping, if found guilty, is liable to the death sentence. Also, whoever permitted his premises to be used for hostage-taking will forfeit the property to government.

Bayelsa State has the anti-kidnapping law enacted in 2013, which prescribes the death sentence for offenders. The legislation, assented to by former Governor Seriake Dickson after its passage by the state legislature, empowers the governor to sign the death warrant of a person or group of persons convicted of kidnapping and related crimes.

In Nasarawa, the state kidnapping prohibition bill signed into law in 2020 by Governor Abdullahi Sule stipulates the death penalty on conviction, and forfeiture of any property used by kidnappers, while the owner of such a property would be liable to 20 years in jail.

There are other states with capital punishment prescribed for kidnapping.

But, besides the broad debate about the propriety of capital punishment in administering justice, its effectiveness in curbing the menace at issue is highly moot. In other words, it is doubtful the states that have had the provision in their laws for some have kidnapping under control by now.

Besides the slow pace of court processes that delay conviction of suspects, governors have generally been reluctant to sign death warrants of convicts, resulting in ballooning death rows in congested custodial centres. Perhaps these are contributory factors to the stipulation not serving as deterrence in states that already have it in their statute books.

This is why we recommend that rather than wait to apprehend offenders and subject them to the penalty, all efforts should be made to put security architecture in place that forestalls the offence.

Aiyedatiwa announced the approval on Monday while inaugurating the newly constituted board for the commission at the government office in Akure, the state capital.

“This budget will fund vital projects in roads, schools, water supply, health centres and housing. It will also strengthen youth and women empowerment schemes, scholarship programmes, and skill acquisition centres, in line with our administration’s development blueprint,” the governor said.

According to him, the inauguration was not merely a statutory duty, but a demonstration of his administration’s commitment to good governance in the two oil producing areas of Ilaje and Ese-Odo local government areas.

While charging the board members to see their appointment as a call to service, Aiyedatiwa reminded them of the high expectations placed upon them by the people and the need to serve with integrity, diligence and selflessness.

He assured the board members of his administration’s support, calling on the traditional rulers, community leaders, youth and civil society groups and development partners to rally behind them in developing the oil-bearing communities.

“This is a bold statement that OSOPADEC will not only function under this administration but will also flourish. It must deliver transformation that speaks loudly and visibly in the lives of the people,”
