Luis Díaz’s Bayern Munich career is up and running after the Bavarians’ new attacking star was unveiled to the world in his new colours and trained at the team’s Säbener Straße headquarters for the first time.

The 28-year-old Colombian winger – signed from Premier League champions Liverpool FC – was in high spirits as he worked out with his new teammates in mild conditions in Munich.

From there, it was on to the club’s media room, where the South American speedster attended his first press conference as a Bayern player.

“I’m just happy to be part of the Bayern family; I’ve always dreamed of playing for the biggest clubs [and] I’m fulfilling a dream with this,” the Barrancas native said. “It’s [now] about getting used to the club as quickly as possible and helping the team. Being at such a big club is special,” Díaz added.

Most recently a Premier League winner at Liverpool, the new No. 14 at Bayern will provide attacking flair from the wing and through the centre and offers the record champions a vital forward outlet as they look to defend their Bundesliga title in 2025/26.

Díaz is also eager to rack up the goals and assists for FCB, just as he has done throughout his club career with Barranquilla, Atlético Junior, Porto and Liverpool and at international level with Colombia, all the while revelling in his on-field duties.

“I like to enjoy football; I always have a smile on my face,” Díaz beamed. “I want to enjoy every moment that life gives me. Smiling is always important [but] I have a strong character on the pitch.”

Asked at his maiden Bayern media briefing what his preferred position might be with his new side, the two-time Portuguese league winner said, “I can play up front or on the wing. The coach has told me he sees me preferably on the left side, but I’ll play where I’m needed. I want to help the team, that’s the priority.”

Sitting alongside Díaz, Bayern’s board member for sport, Max Eberl, cut an equally enthusiastic figure.

“It was clear we wanted to do something in attack,” he explained. “We wanted pace, one-v-one ability and consistency. We then landed on Luis fairly quickly. [He] brings everything we need. He’ll have an instant impact.”

Asked about any further arrivals in this transfer window, Eberl said, “We’re very happy with the squad. There’s still time, so we’ll see what happens.”

Bayern Munich boost firepower with Diaz signing

Bayern Munich has signed forward Luis Diaz from Premier League champions Liverpool for a fee that could reportedly rise to 75 million euros ($86.5 million).

The Colombian winger, who won the Premier League, FA Cup and two League Cups during his three-and-a-half years at Anfield, has signed a contract with the Bundesliga champions until 2029.

The fee paid for Diaz, which includes add-ons, is the third-highest in Bayern’s history.

Diaz, 28, said in a statement on the club’s website that he was he was “very happy” to be joining the 34-time German champions.

“It means a lot to me to be part of FC Bayern,” he said. “They’re one of the biggest clubs in the world. I want to help my new team with my way of playing football and my character.

“My goal is to win every possible title, and that’s what we’ll work for every day as a team.”

Writing on Instagram, Diaz said he would “treasure forever” his time at Liverpool, adding he was “proud of everything we achieved together”.

He mentioned his late teammate Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash in Spain earlier this month.

“I carry everyone with me in my heart, but one of them in particular: Diogo (Jota). I will never forget him. We will never forget him. Thank you for everything.”

Portugal forward Jota showed his support for Diaz when the Colombian’s father was kidnapped in October 2023, holding up a shirt bearing his teammate’s name after scoring a goal.

Diaz’s father was snatched by rebels in his hometown of Barrancas and held hostage for 12 days, before being released unharmed.

The winger made 50 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool last season, scoring 17 goals and providing eight assists as Arne Slot’s team clinched the English league title for a record-equalling 20th time.

Diaz, who arrived at Anfield from Porto in January 2022, was the club’s second-leading goal scorer in the Premier League behind Mohamed Salah, scoring 13 times.

His arrival gives Bayern a quality replacement for Germany forward Jamal Musiala, who has been ruled out for a “long period” after he suffered a broken leg at the recent Club World Cup.

Bayern needed extra firepower after veteran Thomas Mueller left the club and Leroy Sane moved to Galatasaray.

“Luis creates a real goal threat and is a scorer, who at the same time works incredibly hard for his team,” said Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund.

“He’s quick, a versatile footballer and brings an intense style of play to the game. He’s also gained a lot of experience at the top level with Liverpool and the Colombian national team. Luis Diaz represents a complete package that will thrill our fans.”

The only two bigger transfer fees paid by Bayern were 95 million euros for England captain Harry Kane in 2023 and 80 million for French international Lucas Hernandez in 2019.

Diaz will train with his new teammates and coach Vincent Kompany for the first time in Munich on Wednesday and could face French side Lyon in a friendly this weekend.

The father of Liverpool star Luis Diaz has been finally freed by kidnappers – almost two weeks after he was captured.

Luis Manuel Diaz was yesterday taken into the hands of a ‘Humanitarian Commission’ made up of the Catholic Church & the UN’.

Local media said the plan now was to take Diaz Sr to a nearby city for medical checks, with family already on their way to see him.

First images released on Colombian television showed Diaz Senior, wearing a cap and holding a drink, waving an arm in the air.

Diaz’s father, 58, was taken along with the forward’s mother as they stopped for watermelons at a petrol station on October 28.

Colombia’s anti-government National Liberation Army (ELN), a left-wing guerrilla group, were subsequently found to be responsible.

Diaz saw his mother rescued hours after being kidnapped but, amid significant anguish, his father remained missing.

“The Colombian Football Federation thanks the National Government, the Military Forces and the National Police, as well as all the institutions and officials that made the release of Luís Manuel Díaz, father of our player Luís Díaz, possible,” a statement from the Colombia FA read.

“Football as a sporting discipline symbolizes talent, dedication, teamwork and the intrinsic values of human beings. In Colombia it must continue to be a benchmark for entertainment, healthy competition, unity and joy.

“Therefore, we insist on the need to maintain this activity, as well as those who are involved in it, in the sporting and administrative part and their families, outside of any scenario other than sports.’

The statement continued: “Behind a ball, the dreams and illusions of boys and girls, young people, women, men and adult soccer players, their loved ones and an entire country roll.

“Football is passion in peace. Let no one ever think of attacking that reality again!’

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp spoke movingly of the club’s support for their player who was told not to head home for security reasons.

All members of his squad had paid visits to Diaz’s home to offer their support while the side’s Latin American players are thought to have taken the lead.

Speaking to Colombian TV, Diaz’s Aunt said: “There were many days of uncertainty, of sleeplessness, of late nights. Today we are happy, happy to know that we already saw him. He is not as we would like, but he is alive.”
