    CAS upholds Suarez ban

Uruguay forward Luis Suarez’s four-month playing ban for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini has been upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) but he can now train with his new club Barcelona.

Suarez remains ineligible to play in official matches during the four-month period, and his nine-game international ban remains in place, Reuters reports.

“The sanctions imposed on the player by FIFA have been generally confirmed,” CAS said in a statement.

“However, the four-month suspension will apply to official matches only and no longer to other football-related activities (such as training, promotional activities and administrative matters).”

“The CAS Panel found that the sanctions imposed on the player were generally proportionate to the offence committed.

“It has however considered that the stadium ban and the ban from “any football-related activity” were excessive given that such measures are not appropriate to sanction the offence committed by the player and would still have an impact on his activity after the end of the suspension.”

Suarez’s legal team said they had successfully argued that FIFA had misapplied its own rules when considering the case and the sanction it imposed on other football-related activities was disproportionate.

“As a result, Suarez is now permitted to train and attend matches with his Barcelona team mates in preparation for the new season,” his lawyers said in a statement.

Liverpool and Barcelona have reached an agreement for the sale of Uruguayan international Luis Suarez.

Suarez, who is currently serving a four-month ban for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup – will sign a five-year contract with Barcelona next week, provided he passes a medical with the Catalan outfit, kickOffNigeria.com reports.

Liverpool released a statement on Friday, saying: “Liverpool FC confirms that Luis Suarez will be leaving the club after a transfer agreement was reached with FC Barcelona. The player now has permission to complete the usual formalities, which will then conclude the transfer.

“We would like to thank Luis for his contribution and the role he played in helping bring Champions League football back to Anfield.

“Everyone at Liverpool Football Club wishes Luis and his family well for the future.”

Barcelona also issued a statement, which said: “FC Barcelona and Liverpool FC have reached an agreement for the transfer of Luis Suárez.

“The Uruguayan will be travelling to Barcelona next week for a medical, to sign his five-year contract and to be officially presented to the media and fans as an FC Barcelona player.”

Uruguay striker Luis Suarez is now a huge doubt for the World Cup after it was revealed that he would undergo surgery on a knee injury, Goal reports.

The Liverpool star, who was voted PFA Player of the Year by his peers after scoring 31 goals in the just concluded season, felt some discomfort during a training session with his international team-mates on Tuesday.

Subsequent tests showed a problem in his knee meniscus and the 27-year-old will now go under the knife this week, with La Celeste officials desperately hoping that he will recover in time for this summer’s tournament in Brazil.

Uruguay had been placed in Group D in Brazil, along with England, Italy and Costa Rica and the news will come as a boost to Roy Hodgson’s men, who are scheduled to face Oscar Tabarez’s side on June 14.

However, Tabarez can also call on Edinson Cavani and Diego Forlan, with the two forwards likely to spearhead the side’s attack if Suarez does indeed miss out.

Suarez set appalling example – Cameron

British Prime Minister, David Cameron, said Liverpool striker Luis Suarez set “the most appalling example” by biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic.

Suarez has since been banned for 10 games by a Football Association panel.

“As a dad and as a human being do I think we should have tough penalties when football players behave like this? Yes,” Mr. Cameron told BBC Radio 5 live.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has claimed that previous comments from Mr. Cameron swayed the panel’s decision.

Before the panel announced a punishment that Liverpool said left them “shocked” and “bitterly disappointed”, Mr. Cameron had said that “it would be very understandable if the panel took into account that high-profile players are often role models.”

“The Prime Minister even chipped in with something which was a different matter altogether,” said Rodgers on Thursday.

“There’s no doubt if you have those high-profile figures making those sorts of statements, there will be a bias.

“That’s the first time I’ve heard of an independent panel being dictated to by so many people.”

However Mr. Cameron, speaking on Friday morning, denied that he had deliberately intervened.

“I made my own views clear, just as a dad watching the game,” Mr. Cameron added.

“I have a seven-year-old son who loves football, loves watching football and when players behave like this, it sets the most appalling example to young people in our country.”

Liverpool striker, Luis Suarez, was handed a 10-match suspension by the Football Association (FA) on Wednesday, following his bite on Chelsea defender, Branislav Ivanovic, at the weekend.

Suarez accepted a charge of violent conduct after the incident in the 2-2 Premier League draw at Anfield on Sunday, but disputed the FA view that it merited more than a three-game ban.

An Independent Regulatory Commission met in London on Wednesday to decide the Uruguayan international’s fate and added seven games to the usual ban for violent conduct.

The suspension begins immediately, meaning Liverpool’s leading scorer will miss his side’s last four games of the season and the first six at the beginning of next term.

Liverpool, who expressed their shock at the Commission’s decision, have until Friday (1100 GMT) to appeal.

“Both the club and player are shocked and disappointed at the severity of today’s Independent Regulatory Commission decision,” Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre said in a statement on the club’s website.

“We await the written reasons on Thursday, before making any further comment.”

Suarez’s bite on Ivanovic’s arm at Anfield was missed by referee Kevin Friend, but television replays showed him sinking his teeth into the Serbian
