Why I didn’t get married in my early years – M.I. Abaga

Rapper MI Abaga has opened up about his path to marriage, sharing the introspective struggles he faced as his friends and peers settled down earlier in life.

During an interview on the Jay On Air Podcast, he discussed feeling a twinge of regret around the age of 37, as he compared his life to that of his friends who had married in their mid-to-late twenties and were now raising teenagers.

However, he said his outlook changed dramatically when he met his wife just before turning 40, shortly after ending a previous relationship.

According to MI Abaga, his journey to marriage taught him that everyone has their own unique timeline, and that being ready is crucial for a successful relationship.

He said: “I felt a little bad about being unmarried when I was 37 because my friend who got married at 25,26 now have 14 year old kids. I have friends who have kids who are going off to college now and some of them who didn’t marry had kids early. Jesse has a 21 year old child and I don’t have any kids of my own yet so you miss out on some of that.

“No complaints because I got the opportunity to meet this beautiful woman who I’m married to now and I really see some Providence In that. At the end of the day, when you’re not ready you’re not ready. Everybody’s timeline is different and this is something that is lost in humanity today.

“Within my timeline, It just so happened that I had left a relationship around age 39 and met my wife around 40. She was there at my 40th birthday, at that point I was ready, so I asked her to marry me, we got married when I was 41”.

Reflecting on his past relationships, MI Abaga acknowledged his own immaturity and stubbornness, expressing appreciation for the kind-hearted women he had encountered.

“I have sadness when I think about how I was in my former relationships. I met a lot of kind women in my life who were supportive to me. I just wasn’t mature and I was stubborn,” he said.

Rapper N6 has revealed that he played a pivotal role in igniting the long-standing feud between Nigerian hip-hop heavyweights M.I. Abaga and Vector Tha Viper.

Speaking in an interview with Day Genius, N6 said M.I’s 2017 diss track “You Rappers Should Fix Up Your Lives” provoked him to release a counter track titled “You Should Fix Up Your Life, Too.”

According to N6, his direct response stood out from the more diplomatic replies of other rappers at the time and ultimately inspired Vector’s lyrical onslaught against M.I.

While N6 emphasized that he generally prefers to maintain cordial relations within the rap community, he felt compelled to address what he perceived as a slight in M.I’s track.

Their back-and-forth quickly intensified, with M.I responding to N6’s track through a flurry of tweets.

N6 said, “I did a reply track to M.I’s diss track ‘You Rappers Should Fix Up Your Lives,’ but he replied me with tweets. So, we didn’t go on the full extent of a rap beef. He did ‘You Rappers Should Fix Up Your Lives’ and I did ‘You Should Fix Up Your Life, Too,’ then he replied me with about 18 tweets.

“That was the only time I ever went at a fellow rapper. I like to keep a friendly disposition with my colleagues because I know I’m crazily talented. So, what am I dragging with them? When I dropped my reply track, we got into a fight. Some people don’t know that was what led to him [M.I] and Vector’s beef.

“M.I did a song entitled, ‘You Rappers Should Fix Up Your Lives,’ and some rappers started replying him but were being diplomatic. So, I did my reply. If you hear the things I said in my reply, I understand why out of 4,000 replies, he came for me.”

Ice Prince one of top three Nigerian rappers – M.I. Abaga

Veteran rapper, M.I. Abaga, has said that his colleague, Ice Prince, is among the top three Nigerian rappers of all time.

The “Bad Belle” singer made this declaration in a recent Tea With Tay podcast episode hosted by Taymesan.

He claimed that Ice Prince’s contributions to Nigerian hip-hop culture are not given due recognition.

The hip-hop musician claimed that although Ice Prince dominated the genre globally, he was often left out of important discussions.

He claims that, despite his effect, Ice Prince is not well-liked since he does not blow his trumpet.

He said: “When people talk about who I regard as some greatest rappers of all time, I feel like Ice Prince always gets neglected in the conversation for his real impacts.

“We have to remember what Ice Prince did for us. Ice Prince was the guy who had global hip-hop dominance. From ‘Oleku’ period to South Africa. It was just hit after hit. When we started doing collaborations with international artists, Ice Prince was one of the first [to collaborate with them]. We were doing a song with French Montana, going to the U.S. He won the BET award.

“I think it’s because he is just a chilled guy. He doesn’t blow his trumpet. He stays in his lane. So, people don’t rate him. I think he should be in the top 3 greatest Nigerian rappers of all time conversations.

“He is really that impactful. He made such a difference to the genre of Nigerian hip-hop, and to Afrobeats and that movement forward. Ice Prince was there the whole time with Wizkid, Davido, all those guys.”
