    Maddison set to make Spurs return against Man City

    James Maddison could make his return from injury for Tottenham in Friday’s FA Cup tie against Manchester City, says manager Ange Postecoglou.

    Midfielder Maddison has been absent since November with an ankle issue.

    Tottenham defenders Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are fit, while City striker Erling Haaland is close to returning but is not yet available.

    Spurs host City in the fourth-round tie at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (20:00 GMT).

    Postecoglou said of Maddison that “there aren’t too many in the league that are like him”.

    He added: “It just helps our ability to prepare for the challenges ahead. We have been through a difficult period.”

    Haaland, who is level with Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah at the top of the Premier League scoring standings with 14 goals this season, has not featured for City since early December with a foot injury.

    “[He is] still not ready for tomorrow but he is close,” said City manager Pep Guardiola on Thursday. “He trained, is not perfect and we will wait a little bit more.”

    Switzerland defender Manuel Akanji is still out for City, but defender John Stones and goalkeeper Ederson are available for selection.

    Maddison wins Premier League player for August

    New Tottenham signing James Maddison has rounded off an impressive first month as a Spurs player by being named the Premier League player of the month for August. The England star arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium from Leicester in June as part of a £40m deal and has had a major impact at the North London club, who currently sit second in the Premier League table.

    The 26-year-old has scored two goals and assisted a further two across his opening four matches as a Tottenham player and manager Ange Postecoglou will be hoping for more throughout the course of the season.

    Maddison is the first Tottenham player to win the award since Harry Kane in March 2022 and fended off competition from Taiwo Awoniyi (Nottingham Forest), Jarod Bowen (West Ham), Bryan Mbeumo (Brentford), Kaoru Mitoma (Brighton) and Rodri (Manchester City) to win the award. The midfielder is spearheading a new era at Tottenham and their manager Ange Postecoglou has also been announced as the manager of the month for August.

    The London club have impressed many throughout the opening part of the campaign and it remains to be seen how they will fair come the end of the season.
