Ronaldo in  €14.7million tax fraud saga

Cristiano Ronaldo has been accused of defrauding Spanish tax authorities out of €14.7million.

Prosecutors in Madrid have filed a complaint to a court in Pozuelo de Alarcon in which they accuse the Real Madrid star of a “voluntary” and “conscious” breach of his tax obligations, news agency EFE have said.

Ronaldo is alleged to have created a “business structure” in 2010 to conceal his earnings from image rights between 2011 and 2014, according to a letter sent to the court by the prosecutor’s office.

The Portugal captain, named by Forbes this month as the world’s highest-paid athlete, is claimed to have defrauded the Public Treasury out of a total of €14,768,897.

Gestifute, the company owned by Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes, have so far been unavailable for comment.

Ronaldo moved to Madrid in 2009 after Manchester United accepted a then-world record transfer offer of £80m.

He has won 11 major trophies in his time in Spain, including a LaLiga and Champions League double in the 2016-17 season.

Ronaldo: Real Madrid better than Juve

Cristiano Ronaldo believes Real Madrid “are stronger” than Juventus and hopes “it’s a tragic” Saturday night for Juventus.

Madrid are considered slight favourites over Juve to win the Champions League Final, and Ronaldo is confident his side will prove they are worthy of such a tag.

“How I see Saturday night going? With [Madrid] raising the cup to the heavens,” the Portuguese told Fox Sports.

“I would take a bad game but see Real win the Champions League. Juventus are an excellent team, it’ll be a balanced clash, but I’m sure Real Madrid are stronger and we only have to prove it.

“I hope it’s a magical night for us and a tragic one for Juventus.”

•Iheanacho sees action for 49 minutes

Manchester City and Real Madrid played out a goalless draw in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night.

The home side shaded the first 45 minutes, but had to survive a strong finish from Real Madrid, who will now enter next week’s second leg at the Bernabeu as the favourites to make another European final.

Cristiano Ronaldo failed a late fitness test for Real Madrid, with a thigh problem preventing the Portuguese from featuring on his return to Manchester. Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema, however, both overcame knocks to start.

It was Man City that made the brighter start to proceedings in the north of England, with Fernando and Fernandinho helping the home side win the midfield battle against a Real Madrid side that were a little untidy in possession of the ball.

The clock hit 20 minutes and neither side had come close to working the opposition goalkeeper, but Real Madrid were starting to make ground in a wide position as Bale and Vasquez saw more of the ball in dangerous positions.

Man City threatened during a five-minute spell in the build-up to the half-hour mark and De Bruyne had a powerful strike blocked by Carvajal as Real Madrid continued to concede possession in dangerous positions.

Bale decided to try his luck for the visitors 10 minutes before the interval after finding a yard of space, but the Welshman’s long-range strike deflected into the arms of Joe Hart, who had a very comfortable opening 35 minutes.

De Bruyne was the player making things happen for Man City in the final third, but Real Madrid’s defensive shape made it very difficult for the Belgian to release Aguero, who had a very quiet first half of action.

The biggest cheer of the half came in the 40th minute when Kelechi Iheanacho was introduced for the home side, but it was a big blow for Man City as Silva limped off the pitch with a hamstring problem.

The visitors made one change at the interval, with Jese Rodriguez replacing Benzema, who was clearly struggling with a recent knee injury in the opening half of action. It was Jese that went through the middle for Los Blancos, allowing Bale and Vasquez to keep their positions in a wide area.

Aguero’s first sight of goal came in the 47th minute when Fernandinho fed the Argentine outside the Real Madrid box, but the former Atletico Madrid striker’s effort flew over Keylor Navas’s crossbar.

Sergio Ramos had a free header in the 54th minute during a spell of Real Madrid pressure, but the Spanish international could only head a Kroos corner straight into the arms of the waiting Hart.

  • Pogba Plan drawn up amid Madrid rumours

Pogba Plan drawn up amid Madrid rumours

Barcelona will reportedly attempt to sign Paul Pogba during the summer, but the Frenchman will have to wait until the club’s transfer ban concludes in January 2016 before moving to the Camp Nou.

Luis Enrique’s side are expected to face stiff competition for his signature, and particularly from Real Madrid, according to Mundo Deportivo (translated by Tom Conn of Inside Spanish Football):

Pogba is one of the most coveted players in European football and while Barcelona cannot officially register him as a player until next January, they will try to rival the continent’s top clubs for his services but may ultimately lose out to arch-rivals Real Madrid.

However, Conn’s report suggests Barca will exploit a loophole in their transfer hiatus to secure “several major signings.” Juventus may prefer to agree a deal and keep Pogba for an extra few months, providing Massimiliano Allegri with extended time to find a suitable replacement.

Interestingly, Conn indicates Barcelona will attempt to sign Madrid star Isco if Pogba can’t be attained.

It’s likely the Spanish midfielder will be frustrated with rotation upon Pogba’s arrival—especially as Carlo Ancelotti is unlikely to drop Luka Modric or James Rodriguez—despite regularly putting in excellent performances for La Liga’s leaders this season.

Reports are fuelled by Pogba’s previous interview with Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Jamie Kemp of Inside Spanish Football) in which he called team-mate Fernando Llorente his “Spanish teacher.”

Pogba is a powerful midfielder who would add a physical presence to any midfield. He is blessed with a well-rounded game. He is a clever distributor of the ball, confident enough to skip around opponents and capable of scoring stunning goals, as highlighted below:

“I chose to speak to him about it because we have a good understanding of one another and I rate his opinion very highly,” he added. “He told me what he honestly thinks, which he also did before my moves to Leverkusen and to Chelsea.

“We first spoke about a move to Wolfsburg quite some time ago because he believed that, considering the tactical approach and playing style of the team, the move to Wolfsburg would be the right move for me.”

  • Ronaldo: I can’t say what I really think about Madrid reshaping

Cristiano Ronaldo has claimed he “can’t say what he thinks” about Real Madrid’s summer transfer moves but hinted he was unhappy at the way the club have reshaped their squad.

Xabi Alonso, Angel Di Maria, Diego Lopez and Alvaro Morata have all left the Bernabeu, while Monday saw the reigning European champions make their fourth major signing with Javier Hernandez joining recent arrivals Keylor Navas, Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez.

Fifa Ballon d’Or and Goal 50 winner Ronaldo certainly didn’t offer a glowing endorsement to the club’s activity in the current transfer window which closes tonight.

“I have my strong opinions, but I can’t always say what I think. Otherwise, tomorrow it would be on the front pages and I don’t want that,” he told the press at a media event for watchmaker Tag Heuer.

“But if the president thinks the best for the team is to sign players who joined and leave out others, we must respect and support his decisions.”

The 29-year-old Portugal international admitted the changes in personnel would inevitably result in a change in the team’s style – while the losses of Di Maria and Alonso, cornerstones of the club’s Decima success last term to Manchester United and Bayern Munich respectively, would be keenly felt.

“With all the new players the style will change, for better or worse” he said.

“Di Maria and Xabi were very important to us but now they are gone and we should be happy with the new players. I’m sure we’ll be fine.”

Ronaldo is currently recovering from a knee injury that saw him sit out his side’s surprise 4-2 defeat to Real Sociedad at the weekend, but says he expects to back within a week.

“Yesterday I went for a run. I’m sure in a week I’ll be back one hundred percent,” he said, before warning his team-mates they cannot repeat the complacent performance that saw them lose a two-goal lead on Sunday.

“It was a strange game, we were 2-0 up after minutes, but then things changed. We have taken it as a lesson that we cannot think a match is already won. We must fight to the end.”

  • Why I turned down Barca, Madrid—Ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand has revealed he ignored interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona to stay at Manchester United.

The 35 year old said that, during his glory days at Old Trafford, he was wanted by both of Spain’s biggest clubs.

“I spoke to Roma and also there was interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona at one time,” he told The Express. “But when I was at Manchester United and there was interest from other clubs I was winning things at Manchester United. So my head was never turned to go anywhere else.”

The former England captain joined Queens Park Rangers on a free transfer after United opted not to renew his contract in the summer following 12 years at the club, where he won six Premier League titles and appeared in three Champions League finals, triumphing in 2008.

Ferdinand also claimed that United’s success meant he did not want to leave, adding: “You tell someone from Manchester United or a team that’s winning things that they could go abroad and you would be hard pressed to get them to go.

“If Gareth Bale had been at Manchester United and winning trophies he wouldn’t have gone to Real Madrid. I was just turned on by winning. I wasn’t interested in going anywhere else.”

  • Falcao unaware of any Madrid interest

Falcao unaware of any Madrid interest

Monaco’s Radamel Falcao insists he has been given no indication of possible interest from Real Madrid, despite reports to the contrary.

The 28-year-old made his comeback from a serious knee injury in the Emirates Cup over the weekend, coming off the bench in a 2-2 draw with Valencia on Saturday before netting the only goal against Arsenal on Sunday.

Despite missing the second half of the 2013-14 season, as well Colombia’s World Cup campaign in Brazil, speculation has grown that Real are interested in bringing the striker to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Falcao has already seen compatriot James Rodriguez depart for the Spanish giants, but the former River Plate, Porto and Atletico Madrid man says he has heard nothing about a potential return to La Liga.

“To be honest, I do not know anything.” Falcao said.

“I think Monaco have a project with Falcao. I am still finishing my recovery to be fully fit for the the coach.

“Now, I’m not thinking about any other teams. I am focused 100 per cent on Monaco. The only thing that disrupted my sleep was to find out when I would be back on the pitch and today I am very happy to be back.”

Jardim underlined the Ligue 1 club’s determination to keep hold of their star man earlier this week, saying: “At this point Falcao is our player and he’s with us 100 per cent and we don’t want to let him go.”

  • Real Madrid contact Onazi

    Real Madrid contact Onazi

Spanish giants Real Madrid have written to console Nigeria midfielder Ogenyi Onazi over his injury.

Onazi, 21, suffered a fractured ankle when he was stamped on by France midfielder Blaise Matuidi and would have taken no further part in the tournament even if Nigeria had advanced.

In a show of solidarity, Madrid have written to console the player.

“We have learned about your serious injury during the game you played against France. On behalf of our president Florentino Perez and those who work for Real Madrid, we’d like to wish you a smooth and speedy recovery,” wrote Emilio Butragueno, on behalf of Madrid.

“As a former professional footballer, I know you are going through a difficult time but I’m utterly convinced that eventually, you’ll be back to full fitness to help your team achieve its goals next season.”

Onazi has since returned to light training and is expected to join the rest of the Lazio squad for pre-season.

  • Manu: Iheanacho good enough for Real Madrid

Manu: Iheanacho good enough for Real Madrid

Nigeria Flying Eagles coach Manu Garba has told AfricanFootball.com he is not surprised by Kelechi Iheanacho’s man-of-the match showing for Manchester City in Thursday morning’s pre-season tie because the player is good enough to play for a bigger club like Real Madrid.

Nigeria Under 20 forward Iheanacho crowned a five-star display for Manchester City with a superb goal in a 4-1 pre-season win over Sporting Kansas City.

The Golden Ball winner at the 2013 FIFA Under 17 World Cup in the UAE placed his first-time shot inside the near post with a left-footed strike from 20 yards out with an assist from Navas for the fourth and final goal of the match in the 88th minute.

Kansas City goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum denied Iheanacho twice in the first half and the Nigeria starlet was on till 90+2 minutes, when he paved way for Jason Denayer.

“I’m not surprised at all by what Iheanacho has shown because if given the chance, he can play for any team in the world, even Real Madrid,” said Nigeria U-20 coach Manu.

“He already has the technique to flourish at the highest level and the only thing the more established players at City could have over him is experience.”

Manu said Iheanacho’s biggest asset is his composure and clinical finishing around the box.

“At his age, his finishing around the box puts him in a class of his own. He scores five goals in a training. Once you give him the space and allow him to control the ball around the goal area, he could convert three of the five chances he gets. He is that good.”

The Flying Eagles coach told AfricanFootball.com he believes his performance against Kansas City will improve his self-belief.

“His performance (vs Kansas City) will give him even more confidence to step up his game,” he said.

Next month, the Flying Eagles will host Lesotho in a final African Youth Championship qualifier and coach Manu said he expects Iheanacho to rejoin the team at least two weeks to the August 16 clash.

“We have asked City we need the player back with us at least two weeks before our qualifier, but if that is not possible, we could still have him a week before the game as long as he is playing regularly for his club,” said the coach.

  • Madrid to present Kroos on Thursday

Madrid to present Kroos on Thursday

Toni Kroos could be presented as a Real Madrid player on Thursday, reports in Spain and Germany suggest.

Bild and Marca both lead with the news this morning that an agreement between the player, Bayern Munich and Los Blancos is in place.

The European champions are likely to pay the Bavarian outfit around €30m for the 25-year-old, with a deal to be confirmed later this week.

Kroos had wanted to stay at the Allianz Arena, but after being denied the chance to earn as much as Philipp Lahm and Bastian Schweinsteiger, has opted to leave.

Madrid though, are happy to pay the playmaker the €12m he was after at Bayern.

The player’s agent insisted on Monday that no decision had been made yet, but both papers claim that a switch to Santiago Bernabeu is just formalities away.
