EPL: Madueke shines as Arsenal go seven points clear

Noni Madueke starred as Arsenal extended their lead at the top of the table to seven points as they beat Leeds United to record their first league win in four Premier League matches.

Madueke was not meant to start the game and was a late replacement for winger Bukayo Saka, who limped out of the warm-up with a hip problem.

And Madueke, who has had to play the role of back-up for most of this season, took his chance to impress as he curled in an excellent cross for Martin Zubimendi to nod Arsenal in front.

The home side had started the game well but Arsenal pinned Leeds back for large parts of the first half, winning a number of corners and throw-ins to increase pressure on the Leeds defence.

It was from one of these corners that Arsenal doubled the lead when Madueke’s curling delivery caught out goalkeeper Karl Darlow and he could only punch the ball into his own net.

Viktor Gyokeres then made sure it was a comfortable end to the game when he fought to get on the end of Gabriel Martinelli’s inviting cross to make it 3-0 before substitute Gabriel Jesus added a fourth late on.

The expectation was on Arsenal to deliver a result coming into this game after their recent form, but they recorded an important victory to put pressure on their title rivals, Manchester City and Aston Villa, who are not in action until Sunday.

Noni Madueke scored twice as Arsenal beat Club Brugge to maintain their 100% record in the Champions League and all but secure their place in the knockout phase.

Mikel Arteta made five changes to the side that lost to Aston Villa on Saturday and it was one of those players, Noni Madueke, who opened the scoring with an excellent strike.

The England winger shrugged off one defender before smashing a shot from 20 yards which went in off the crossbar.

Club Brugge did threaten Arsenal’s much-changed backline just before the break but David Raya made smart saves from Christos Tzolis and Aleksandar Stankovic to keep the Gunners in the lead.

Madueke got his second goal of the evening just two minutes into the second half when he nodded in Martin Zubimendi’s excellent cross, and Gabriel Martinelli ensured it would be a comfortable end to the game when he curled in a superb strike in the 56th minute for Arsenal’s third.

There were also other positives for the Gunners as Gabriel Jesus made his first appearance for 342 days, after recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, and 16-year-old Marli Salmon was brought on for his first-team debut.

And Jesus almost made it the perfect comeback but his strike from the edge of the area late on hit the bar.

The win leaves Arsenal on 18 points, two more than was required for a top-eight finish last season, meaning they are likely to avoid the play-offs in February and can prepare for the last 16.

  • Arsenal’s Madueke out for six to eight weeks

Arsenal’s Madueke out for six to eight weeks

Arsenal expect Noni Madueke to miss six to eight weeks with the knee injury sustained in the 1-1 draw with Manchester City on Sunday.

However, the 23-year-old England winger is not believed to have suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

The summer signing from Chelsea was substituted at half-time of the Premier League match with City and has been having tests to discover the severity of the problem.

“It looks like Noni is going to be out for a few weeks, but we don’t really know yet, we will have to scan him next week again,” said Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta on Tuesday.

“He felt something at the beginning of the match and tried to carry on but it was too sore, so let’s see.”

Asked to confirm whether Madueke will be out for weeks rather than months, Arteta replied: “We hope so. Like I said, we need to scan him again to see the extent of the injury but it doesn’t look too bad.”

Arsenal face Port Vale in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

Earlier, sources indicated medics were waiting for the swelling to subside before making a definitive diagnosis on the injury, but it is understood that Madueke will be sidelined for a minimum of six weeks, though that timescale is thought to be the best-case scenario.

The news is a major blow to Arteta and England head coach Thomas Tuchel given Madueke’s promising start to the season.

If the initial prognosis is confirmed, Madueke will not return to action until November at the earliest, ruling him out of a clutch of key domestic and European games for the Gunners.

The attacker is set to miss England’s forthcoming games against Wales and Latvia, while also making him a doubt for World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Albania in mid-November.

Arsenal face Sunderland on 8 November in the Premier League. If Madueke is unavailable for that game and the international break, he could return for the north London derby versus Tottenham on 23 November.

Arsenal’s ‘scary show of strength’ as Madueke shines

Arsenal came into this season on the back of a busy summer transfer window where they spent around £250m and brought in eight players to propel another push for the Premier League title.

As they swept aside Nottingham Forest 3-0 with five of those new signings starting, the Gunners showed why such aggressive recruitment was justified.

Mikel Arteta’s side were without key trio Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and William Saliba through injury, while skipper Martin Odegaard limped off in only the 18th minute.

But it mattered little as Arsenal showed their strength in depth to cruise to an impressive success.

Viktor Gyokeres and Martin Zubimendi were their statement signings and likely to start regardless of the opposition.

But with Declan Rice named as a substitute, manager Arteta has ripped up his tier system for this campaign, where he had a number of players who were guaranteed starters and expected to play most of the games.

And despite their injury troubles, Arsenal have won three of their first four league games and are yet to concede a goal from open play.

Arsenal complete Madueke signing from Chelsea

Arsenal have signed England winger Noni Madueke from Chelsea on a long-term deal, the north London club announced .

Financial terms were not disclosed, but British media reported the deal between the London rivals to be worth 48 million pounds ($64.5 million), with a further 4 million in add-ons, with the player signing a five-year contract.

The 23-year-old Madueke joined Chelsea from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 and made 92 appearances in all competitions, scoring 20 goals and providing nine assists.

Born in the north London suburb of Barnet, Madueke trained in the academies of Crystal Palace and then Tottenham Hotspur before making the switch abroad to PSV Eindhoven at the age of 16.

“I’ve just been relaxed, waiting for the green light and when I came in today, it all felt real. I’m really happy and really proud, so it’s a great moment for me. It’s great to go back home, be with my mum, my dad. I know my mum misses me in the house,” Madueke said in a statement.

“It’s already a great team with a clear identity and I can’t wait to bring my style to the team and try and help the boys as much as possible to take that next step.”

Madueke, known for his direct dribbling and speed, has featured predominantly on the right wing for Chelsea but is capable of playing on both flanks.

His arrival could give Mikel Arteta the flexibility to rotate more frequently, easing the workload on right winger Bukayo Saka and left winger Gabriel Martinelli, both of whom were sidelined with hamstring injuries at the same time in February last season.

“Noni joins our group with familiar England teammates and other players he knows… His arrival will really improve our squad,” Arteta said.

“At just 23, Noni already brings experience of club and international football, and he knows the Premier League very well. Having seen the quality of Noni’s performances up close in recent seasons, we’re really excited he is joining us.”

‘Repentant’ Madueke  destroys Wolves in eight-goal thriller

Chelsea winger Noni Madueke apologised to Wolverhampton Wanderers for an errant social media post  but only after his 15-minute hat-trick in a 6-2 drubbing had rubbed salt in the home side’s wounds.

Madueke had posted a less-than-complimentary opinion about the Midlands city in the build-up to the Premier League clash and, though he later deleted it, the damage had already been done.

The 22-year-old Londoner was booed by the home club’s fans every time he touched the ball but it did not deter him and he struck three times early in the second half to take Chelsea clear after the match had been poised at 2-2 following a frenetic first half.

“I just want to apologise to everyone that I might have offended,” said Madueke, one of nine players in Enzo Maresca’s starting line-up aged 23 or under.

“It is just a human mistake, an accident. It wasn’t meant to be out on my socials like that. I’m sure Wolverhampton is a nice town and I’m sorry. I expected the boos but you have to perform under pressure.”

Chelsea’s first league points of the season arrived in spectacular fashion with Cole Palmer at the heart of a vibrant attacking display — assisting all of Madueke’s goals.

Madueke said Italian Maresca had already made a big impact at Stamford Bridge since joining from Leicester City whom he guided back to the Premier League last season.

“Everyone saw what he did at Leicester last year, he is mad about the details,” Madueke said. “Even in the first game against (Manchester) City there were some nice patterns of play but we just couldn’t finish it off.

“It is a great day today, I am happy he has got his first Premier League win for Chelsea.”

Maresca, who has a squad of around 40 players to try to mould into a team capable of challenging near the top, said he was lucky to have so many versatile players.

“We have to be more accurate. The intention is always good but we need to be more accurate if we want to play in the way we play,” he said. “I am lucky to have so many versatile players who can play in lots of different positions.”

Madueke joins Newcastle United in £29 million deal

Chukwunonso ‘Noni’ Madueke is on the verge of leaving London giants Chelsea and joining Newcastle United, Soccernet.ng reports.

Noni Madueke arrived at Chelsea in a permanent move from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in January 2023.

After a slow start in West London, Madueke showed glimpses of his best qualities last season, scoring six goals and providing two assists in 29 appearances.

However, the 23-year-old winger would have craved more time on the pitch as he only started 17 of those games, playing second fiddle to Cole Palmer.

It is an arrangement that will not likely change even under new manager Enzo Maresca, with Palmer almost guaranteed a starting shirt for the Blues.

According to Football Insider, Madueke has chosen the exit door and has agreed to a deal with Newcastle United where he will look to thrive under the management of Eddie Howe.

Madueke is currently with Chelsea on their pre-season tour of the USA and featured in their 2-2 draw with Wrexham on Thursday, July 25.

Newcastle are expected to at least match the £29 million (₦59.6 billion) that Chelsea paid Dutch giants PSV to acquire his services last year.

  • Family alleges attempt to demonise ex-minister

Family alleges attempt to demonise ex-minister

Former Petroleum Resources Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke has denied  allegations of money laundering and bribery levelled against her.

She was invited along with four others by the United Kingdom’s National Crimes Agency (NCA) last Friday but she denied being questioned over allegations of fraud. Besides, her international passport was not seized, it was claimed.

Mrs. Alison-Madueke responded through a statement yesterday by Oscar M. Onwudiwe, the legal attorney to the Agama and Madueke families.

The statement accused the media of choosing to engage in “a frenzy” rather than contact the family for its  reaction.

The statement said: “The Madueke family is appalled at the ongoing media frenzy against Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke following an invitation to her by the British authorities last Friday for reasons which have yet to be disclosed.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the family would like to state categorically that it has no issues with any persons from the family being invited anywhere in the world to answer questions about their private or official conduct.

“The Madueke family believes in law and order, honour and due process

“It is a deliberate and vicious campaign to demonise members of the Madueke family, with all manner of frivolous allegations”

The statement said: “It is worth emphasising that Mrs Alison-Madueke was never arrested or detained and her passport was never seized. She was merely invited, and she honoured it promptly.

“ The Madueke family, like most other families, have their own challenges. For instance, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke has been receiving treatment for cancer in the UK which started while she was in office.

“The health crisis has unfortunately exacerbated in recent times. She completed months of chemotherapy just last week and she is scheduled to undergo surgery next week in London.

“The family has been bearing this challenge with prayers and as much grace and fortitude as possible; and would plead with all reasonable Nigerians to pray for her recovery so that she can face this allegation and give account of her stewardship. Yes, she can—and very well, too.

“The Madueke and Agama families would want the decent public to know that neither Ugonna nor Somze or Abiye or anyone related to the two families was picked up or arrested or invited for questioning by anybody whatsoever. Ugonna’s father (the Rear Admiral) has been in Lagos and working in his office.

“The lies about his having travelled with a team of lawyers should please stop. The Madueke family has taken a decision on how to appropriately deal with those who are on a mission to soil their hard earned family name.”

On the ex-minister’s mother, the statement said: “Mrs. Beatrice Agama, the 81-year old mother of Mrs. Diezani Madueke, owns a house in the United Kingdom. A LIE! Mrs. Agama has no house or property in the United Kingdom.

“She has been staying in a rented two-bedroom flat from where she is receiving medical attention for a broken femur”

  • Madueke: A minister and her traducers

Madueke: A minister and her traducers

Arguably, she is the most popular minister of the republic. And this has nothing to do with the fact that she is no doubt a delectable beauty but simply because she ‘mans’ the most strategic ministry in the country and that is the ministry of petroleum resources. This has put Diezani Alison-Madueke in the eye of the storm so to say. From barrage of attacks from those who feel her ministry riles with corruption to those who feel she is occupying that position simply because she is close to the president and not because of any spectacular qualification. In fact, the recent brouhaha over the Nuhu Ribadu Report on the management of the petroleum subsidy funds has further incensed traducers of the minister who believe that she was part of the conspiracy to rubbish the report even before it was submitted to the president.

Beyond questions on her official conduct are other questions that bother on her integrity both as a public officer and a mother and a wife. Recently, Sahara Reporters, an on-line news medium reported that the minister paid for two rooms in two separate high cost hotels in New York City, USA, during the recently concluded United Nations General Assembly. This, according to the report, was apart from other costly indulgences the minister and her aides engaged in during the trip. In fact, the report said the petroleum minister traveled from London to New York in a private jet.

While the public often swallows reports like this hook, line and sinker, the question is if the petroleum minister is such a reckless and indecent public officer who acts and behaves irrespective of what the public feels or the limitations of her office. Has it been all doom and gloom for the petroleum ministry since she assumed office having been redeployed from the ministry of mines and steel? Has there been no any remarkable achievement in the ministry since Diezani became the minister?

    An Operator’s Testimony

Perhaps, one of those who are in the best position to answer these questions is Leemon Agbonjagwe Ikpea, who is the chairman of Lee Engineering Limited, one of the leading lights in oil service business in the country. He said he could not fathom the incessant criticisms the petroleum minister is subjected to all the time, considering her support for indigenous players in the oil and gas industry. He explained that he had never met the minister prior to their encounter when she came to inspect one of the projects his company was handling. I saw a totally different person from what the media have been painting her to be. I think she is a gift to this country and to Africa. She would not allow anybody to oppress Nigerian companies and she has encouraged the growth of Nigerian companies. With this encouragement we have been able to employ a lot of people and also give a lot of people scholarships. We have about 800 workers now. Because of her efforts and the efforts of the federal government, Nigerian companies are no more beggars of foreign companies.”

    The PIB Bill

One of the things that have given players like Leemon Ikpea some leeway in the oil and gas industry is the Petroleum Industry Bill, otherwise known as the PIB. The bill is as controversial as the oil and gas industry itself. Successive governments have always found it difficult to handle and the reason for this is not far-fetched. The bill, if signed into law, will give greater control of the oil and gas industry to Nigerians. Certain aspects of the industry will be exclusive preserve of Nigerians and will also take some influence away from foreigners who have dominated the industry for decades. Quite as expected, the foreign oil companies have not found many provisions of the Bill funny. And they have been acting accordingly, albeit clandestinely. Impeccable sources close to the corridors of power insist these foreign interests have been doing all humanly possible to see that the bill does not see the light of day. Analysts believe the barrage of attacks on the person of the petroleum minister could be traceable to this. The reason being that the minister has been one of the major supporters of the bill. And a new final draft of the bill has now been sent to the National Assembly for consideration and approval. She is known to be a strong supporter of the bill and beyond that, some excesses of foreign oil companies are being curtailed from time to time.

“I won’t be surprised if the minister is paying the price of standing her ground that Nigerians should have greater say in the way the oil and gas industry is being controlled,” an oil and gas expert stated in Lagos during the week. “For once, this woman has insisted on transparency in the way the foreigners conduct their businesses and above all, the Petroleum Industry Bill, which is staunchingly being pushed pushing to be passed could never be in the interest of the foreigners. I would be surprised if they are behind these incessant media attacks. There was a time they said she bought a house in Vienna, Austria worth hundreds of millions of naira. This has been proved to be a pack of lies.”

    Highlight of the infrastructure achievements

130km x 24inch Oben-Geregu completed and commissioned. Open gas access to the Geregu IPP, Dangote’s Obajana Cement and to the northern corridor. Also completed and commissioned is the 50km Ikpe Annang – Calabar pipeline opening up the Calabar axis to gas. With this pipeline the UNICEM cement plant and other industrial facilities in Calabar now have access to gas. The following three pipelines are also very close to completion; 104km x 24inch Escravos-Warri pipeline doubling capacity to 600mmcf/d and providing immediate access to 80mmcf/d of gas 24kmX24inch Itoki-Olorunshogo gas pipeline, providing a permanent solution to the challenge of gas supply to Olorunshogo power plants 30kmX24inch Imo River to Alaoji gas pipeline, providing a permanent supply source to Alaoji power plant.

Other ongoing pipeline projects include the 350kmX30inch Oben-Lagos pipeline doubling the capacity to 2bcf/d and creating a major expansion of supply to the Western Axis by end of the year and

The 60km Ubefan-Imo River pipeline reinforcing gas supply to the East by end of July 2012 Perhaps one of the most important infrastructure achievement is the recent award of the Obiafo/Obrikom-Oben East West gas pipeline contract, providing the much needed bridge between the high gas reserves in the East and the High demand in the west. The pipeline is due to be completed within 24 months. More importantly, one of the key strategies of government to create an enabling environment for private sector investment in gas infrastructure development. In this regard, good progress is being made towards a bankable framework for PPP initiative to fund other pipeline projects such as the Calabar-Ajaokuta and Ajaokuta-Kano pipelines. This PPP arrangement is expected to facilitate access to over $2bn and essentially enable the conclusion of the gas infrastructure backbone development. It is expected that this commercial framework will be concluded by the end of the year, creating a basis for private investors to invest in gas infrastructure Realizing. Nigeria’s aspiration for economic growth as a nation requires a robust gas infrastructure. The foregoing shows clearly the steady progress towards achieving this objective

    More For Localy

If there is another area where Diezani Alison-Madueke has been pushing her weight, it the area of bidding for oil blocks. Apart from the transparency that has been brought into it, the minister is said to have insisted that more opportunities be given to indigenous oil and gas companies to participate in the bidding process and take their chances in the same process. Gradually, more and more Nigerians are getting into the capital intensive upstream sector of the petroleum industry.

Perhaps, one area where the minister has shown her love for her country is being able to persuade indigenous oil companies to try and buy into government’s drive to utilise the nation’s abundant gas reserves to generate electricity. In this regard, quite a few of them have signified their interest in the sector and have held productive meetings with top government officials in this regard.

She might be the most controversial minister but she could also have been passed as one of the most productive ones. Only if her traducers could see that to every coin, there are always two sides, and the two sides don’t always look the same. Alison-Madueke should be encouraged in her bold quest to reform the petroleum sector rather than raining abuses at her on a daily basis.

The House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream) is worried over the huge rent bills brought before the National Assembly by agencies under the Ministry of Petroleum.

The Ajibola Muraina-led committee resolved yesterday to summon the Minister, Mrs. Dieziani Allison-Madueke, to shed more light on the bills, which have been causing the country billions of Naira.

Muraina, speaking at the budget defence meeting with the Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), led by its Chairman, Prof. Humphrey Assisi Asobie and Executive Secretary, Mrs. Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed, noted that billions of Naira were being budgeted by the agencies in the nation’s oil sector.

He said he wondered why such agencies could not own their buildings.
