    Court sentences ‘Professor’ to six months for impersonating daughter

    A Chief Magistrate Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, has sentenced ‘Professor’ Jide Josiah Jisos to six months in prison for impersonation during the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

    The sentence was handed down by Chief Magistrate Hon Justice Folashade Oyekan on October 24, 2024.

    Jisos was apprehended by officials from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) while monitoring the UTME at Brix Academy in Abuja.

    According to a statement from JAMB’s Public Communication Advisor, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, Jisos falsely presented himself as a representative of a non-governmental organization (NGO) with the intention of overseeing the examination.

    Jisos was arrested and handed to security personnel for further investigation after he failed to provide satisfactory answers to the JAMB officials. 

    During interrogation, Jisos admitted that he had no affiliation with any NGO and entered the examination hall to assist his daughter in taking the UTME.

    In addition to the six-month prison sentence, he was given the option to pay a fine of N100,000.

  • Man jailed five months for stealing phones

    A Magistrate Court in Minna on Friday sentenced a 28-year-old man, Mohammed Yakubu, to five months imprisonment for stealing two phones.

    Yakubu, who was arraigned on two charges of criminal trespass and theft, had pleaded guilty but appealed for mercy.

    In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs Sa’adatu Gambo, sentenced the accused to five months in prison.

    Gambo, however, gave the convict an option of N15, 000 fine.

    Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Inspector Ahmed Ali, had told the court that Danlami Kassim and Christiana Auta, both complainants, reported the matter at the Tudun Wada Police Station on Nov. 6.

    Ali quoted the complainants as alleging that the convict trespassed into their respective offices at the State Secretariat, Minna, and made away with their phones.

    He said both phones were recovered from the accused during police investigation.

    Ali said that the offences contravened sections 348 and 287 of the Penal Code Law.

    He prayed the court to try Yakubu summarily in line with section 157 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law.

  • Court strikes out sexual abuse case against Director of Children home

    A magistrate court sitting in Odeda, in Odeda Local Government Area, Ogun State, on Friday dismissed the sexual abuse case against the Director of Stephens Children Home, Abeokuta, Rev. Isaac Newton – Wusu, for lack of merit.

    Two ex-female inmates of the home had alleged that while their stay there lasted, Newton – Wusu severally abused them sexually after he had carefully drugged them to sleep. The alleged offences were said to have been committed between 2010 and 2013.

    And following complaint to the Police in respect of the allegations by Concerned Past Students of Stephens Children Home (COPASSTECH), the Ogun State Police Command charged the Director to a magistrate court in Odeda where an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Austin Ozimini was the Police prosecution while Mr. Samuel Nwaji, served as counsel for the accused Director (Isaac Newton – Wusu).

    But delivering his judgment in the case that lasted about a year, Magistrate B.O Ilo, struck out the suit on the advice of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) which stated that the case was borne out of “power tussle” within the management of the Home.

    Also, the Magistrate added that the DPP found out that the account of the two principal witnesses in the case in respect of the allegations, were contradictory hence the need to resolve the matter in favour of the accused.

  • Court remands three politicians in Lagos over alleged murder

    A Yaba Chief Magistrate Court in Lagos State on Wednesday remanded three politicians in Ikoyi Prison over alleged murder.

    The accused – Bosun Adigun, 43; Semiu Ogunbona, 58; and Sabitu Kamarudeen, 54, are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and murder.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs O.G. Oghere, ordered that the trio should be remanded in prison due to the magnitude of the alleged offences.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Modupe Olaluwoye, had told the court that the accused conspired and shot dead one Mr Nurudeen Olanase following a political disagreement.

    She said that the accused committed the offences at noon on May 12 at the Central Community Primary School, Oniwaya, Agege, Lagos.

    According to the prosecutor, the accused shot the deceased on the head with a prohibited firearm.

    “They conspired among themselves and killed the deceased because of a political disagreement they had,” she said.

    The prosecutor submitted that the offences contravened Sections 215 and 233 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    It was also reported that murder attracts death penalty.

    Counsel to the accused, Mr Tunji Akinyemi, had prayed the court to grant his clients bail in liberal terms but Oghere remanded them and ordered that the case file should be sent to the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

    She adjourned the case until July 11for mention.

    14 IPOB members remanded in Prison

    A Magistrate Court sitting in Aba North Local Government area of Abia State presided over by Ogbonna Adiele on Wednesday remanded 14 members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Aba Federal Prison.

    Recall that Adiele had on the 18th of September remanded 7 accused IPOB members: Chinonso Ude (30years), Maduabuchi Echereodo (25years), Ugochukwu Ikechukwu (32years), Okechukwu Daniel (20years), Ifeanyi Sunday (33years), Okezie Jeremiah (26years) and Chizuruoke Nwauzo (27years) in prison custody following charges on terrorism, kidnapping and use of offensive weapons against them in charge sheets; 132C/2017 and MAN/133C/2017.

    The 14 fresh members of IPOB, Anthony Nnamani(20 years), Chima Chukwumere(22 years), Kingsley Sunday (21 years), Michael Onyedikachi(26 years), Eze Okereke(25 years), Christian Sylvester (45 years), Etim Effiong Ade(22 years), Emmanuel Onwukwe(29 years), Ndubuisi Ukoha(29 years), Ogbonna Nwaji(24 years), Salvation Stephen (22 years), Chizoba Nwosu(21 years), Ejike Elom(21 years) and Kelechi Anusie(26 years) were  arraigned on 8 count charges: Conspiracy, Murder, Arson, unlawful Association, Unlawful Assembly, Stealing with other two charges dealing on burning of the Ariaria Divisional Police Headquarters building and the cars at the premises.

    While the Police Prosecutor, Gabriel Ogbonna urged with the court to commence trial since according to him, the court has the jurisdiction to hear the matter, counsel to the 1st, 2nd and 5th accused persons, Barrister Charles Onuchukwu objected to the prosecutor’s position as he stressed that the court doesn’t have the jurisdiction to hear cases of murder as contained on count 2 of the charge sheet.

    Onuchukwu also argued that the issue of “holding charge” was unconstitutional and unknown to law.

    The trial magistrate after listening to the argument of the prosecutor and counsel to the accused persons ordered that the accused persons were remanded to prison custody and ordered that the case file be transferred to the office of the Attorney General for advice

    The case was adjourned to 4th of October for report of compliance.

    Teenage boy faces break-in, robbery charges in Lagos

    A teenager, Elijah Daramola, was on Friday brought before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos charged with robbery and breaking into a house in the wee-hours of the day.

    The 18-year-old is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, burglary and robbery.

    Magistrate Bola Folarin-Williams directed that the plea of the accused be taken and quashed the remand order brought by the police.

    She granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Jimah Iseghede told the court that the accused committed the offences on March 19 at 4.00 a.m. at No. 33/35, Modele St., Surulere.

    He told the court that the accused, armed with gun and other dangerous weapons, broke into the residence of the complainant, Oluyinka Olumide and stole property worth thousands of naira.

    He listed items allegedly stolen by Daramola as one Hp laptop valued at N70, 000, one Toshiba laptop valued at N50, 000, one iPhone6 valued at N160, 000 and a Samsung smart phone valued at N40, 000.

    Others are a Nokia phone, two Itel phones and a smart phone valued at N140, 000.

    Iseghede also alleged that the accused stole two gold rings and a wedding band, a driving licence, seven ATM cards, N60, 000 and 300 dollars, all belonging to Oluyinka Olumide.

    The offences, according to the prosecutor, contravened Sections 297, 307 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    The case has been adjourned until Aug. 24 for mention. (NAN)

    Driver arraigned for dangerous driving

    A 32-year-old driver, Bola Akinwalere, was on Thursday docked at an Okitipupa Magistrates’ Court in Ondo State over alleged dangerous driving and causing bodily harm to one motorcyclist, Sola Ayegbami.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Zedekiah Orogbemi, told the court that the accused on May 22, around 3.30 p.m., along Okitipupa-Aye road drove one Toyota Sienna car with registration number BDG 746 QZ dangerously.

    He said that the accused who had no driver’s licence and  due to speeding, hit Ayegbami from behind which caused the him  several degrees of injuries and bodily harm.

    The prosecutor added that the accused also damaged one Qlink motorcycle with registration number KTP 189 AA belonging to Ayegbami.

    The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 6 and 10(3) of the Federal Highway Act, Cap.F13, Vol.VI, Laws of Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

    The accused whose address was not disclosed in court, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of dangerous driving and driving without a driver’s licence on public highway levelled against him.

    The magistrate, Mr. Banji Ayeomoni, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 and a surety in like sum with evidence of a year-tax clearance as part of the bail conditions.

    He adjourned the case until June 15 for further hearing.

  • Man jailed for impregnating daughter in Ondo

    A Magistrate Court sitting in Idanre in Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State Thursday ordered a 56-year-old man identified as Olubayode to be remanded in prison for impregnating his 16-year-old daughter.

    The convict who was arraigned by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) was said to have had sex with his daughter at their residence at Oke-Ijebu Street in Odode area of Idanre.

    The convict was charged on a one-count charge of having incestuous behaviour with a 16-year-old girl.

    The offence, according to the prosecutor was contrary to and punishable under sections 31(1) and 31(2) of the Ondo State Child’s Right law, 2007.

    Olubayode pleaded not guilty to the charge on his first arraignment but he was later found guilty by the court.

    The NSCDC prosecuting officer Mr. Ebriku David told the court that the victim and her boss came to report her father in the NSCDC’s office in Idanre, when it was discovered that the girl was pregnant.

    According to him, the case was transferred to Akure division, where the victim informed the command that her father was responsible for the pregnancy.

    David also told the court that the convict had earlier confessed at the NSCDC office that he committed the offence.

    In her ruling, the magistrate, Mrs O.A Edwin said Olubayode was guilty of the offence and sentenced him to nine years imprisonment with hard labour without option of fine.

    The magistrate said it was a shame and act of high immorality for the convict to be having an incestuous affairs with his own daughter.

    A 16 year old boy and SS2 student, Ifeanyichukwu Ejeh, from Ndiogodo Idoko village,  Ishieke community  of Ebonyi local government area of Ebonyi state have been arranged before a Magistrate Court, Abakaliki Division for allegedly clubbing his father, Michael Ejeh to death.

    Ifeanyichukwu who is an SS2 student of Community Secondary School, Mbeke in the area was accused hitting the father severally with a mortar-pestle when the father was asleep.

    The incident, it was gathered, happened shortly after a misunderstanding between them over N1, 000 money given to the boy to buy things and cook for the family which he allegedly used and settled financial requirements in his school.

    The act according to court records in No MAB/105/2017 is an offence punishable under section 319(1) cap 33 vol. 1 laws of Ebonyi state of Nigeria.

    The suspect who pleaded guilty to the crime while in the dock begged the court for leniency even as he blamed his act on evil spirit.

    He said he was reading his book in their compound when something suddenly came over him and asked him to kill his father.

    The suspect said he regained his senses after committing the crime and saw his father laying in his poll of blood.

    But wife of the deceased, Mrs Mary Ejeh a Cross River based business woman who said she was not around when the incident occurred, said the
    deceased gave the sum of N1, 000 to the suspect for cooking but he used it for his school expenses which annoyed the father, leading to a heated argument between the deceased and the boy.

    She disclosed that her husband had gone to bed to sleep after the misunderstanding and was sleeping when Ifeanyichukwu descended on him with mortar-pestle, hitting him severally until he died.

    Police arraigns six for allegedly defrauding NBC

    The Police Monday arraigned six men before a Lagos state Magistrate court sitting in Ikeja for allegedly defrauding Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) of N12.25million.

    They were arraigned before Magistrate Bola. O.  Osunsanmi on a three-count charge, bordering on conspiracy, fraud and forgery.

    They are Sunday Ogundipe, Sunday Idowu, Afolabi Oke, Dickson Oyewole, Kayode Adeleye and Segun Olaide.

    Police prosecutor, Inspector Precious Olatunde alleged that the defendants conspired among themselves to defraud NBC of N12.25Million.

    The defendants were also alleged of having in their possession, forged documents purportedly belonging to Abeokuta Local Government and Egbeda Local Government.

    According to the prosecution, the defendants carried out the alleged criminal acts on the July 25, 2016 at about 12:30hrs at Moroko Area of Lagos state.

    When the charges were read, the defendants pleaded not guilty to the three count charge offence preferred against them by the Police.

    Counsel to the defendants, Mr. Christopher Iloadonafo applied for the bail of them, assuring the court that they would not jump bail.

    The trial magistrate, Mrs. Bola Osunsanmi granted them bail in the sum of N200, 000 each with two sureties in like sum.

    The matter was however adjourned till September 21, 2016 for hearing.
