  • Cleric seeks jobs for youths

Massive unemployment has made youths in the country to become elements of destabilisation and threat to socio-economic peace as more of them are now used by unscrupulous politicians to cause mayhem in the country.

Archbishop Magnus Atilade, who said this at the 13thBiennial Graduation Ceremony at the Nigeria Opportunities Industrialisation Centres (NOIC

), Lagos, lamented the factors encouraging youth unemployment, saying it is dangerous to the society.

“This massive unemployment among the youth and the unpalatable economic situation in the country have reached a devastating peak, leading to Boko Haram, kidnapping, assassination, ritual killing, armed robbery, advanced fee fraud and internet crimes with the youths actively involved in the social and moral vices,” Atilade said

He bemoaned the wastage of the nation’s wealth through high-level corruption among politicians, saying if government at the federal, state and local levels would reinvest in the youth, peace and tranquility would abound in the nation with improved economy.

About 1,000 youths graduated from the institute with training in marketable vocations in line with their educational backgrounds.

The institute’s Executive Director, Mr Kehinde Abiola, urged the Federal Government and other stakeholders to partner with NOIC to tackle the lingering unemployment problem in the country.

He said NOIC is “about impacting marketable skills that will enable young people acquire self employed jobs skills and be self-reliant, live meaningful lives and also employ others.

“We are appealing for assistance from governments at all levels, corporate organisations and concerned stakeholders to join us to put an end to the issue of unemployment in Nigeria within the shortest possible time.”

To ensure that the trainees do not lose sight of their goals, a national revolution scheme, he said, was set up to give loans to its graduate trainees to enable them set up their businesses while the NOIC officials follow up the business with regular visits and organising seminars and workshops.

  • Return schools to owners, Atilade appeals to Aregbesola

Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria(CAN) South West region, Archbishop Magnus Atilade, has proposed the return of schools to their original private and missionary owners in Osun State.

He said this will reduce tension generated by the ongoing educational reforms in the state.

Atilade, in a chat last week in his office, stated that returning schools to their original owners will serve the state best and achieve the intended reforms without creating bad blood.

According to him: “The church has been educating over 75% of the critical masses for years in Osun State. You can’t just wish or take away that legacy. You can’t reverse all that.

“I believe the way out really is that schools should be returned to their original owners in Osun State. We have done it in Lagos and we see what differences are being made. There is no how the government can be involved in running all schools.”

He called on Governor Rauf Aregbesola to borrow a leaf from Lagos State and others that have successfully returned schools to their owners.

Atilade added: “Government cannot be involved in running all schools. That will be asking for too much. It is important the private sector is encouraged to take over schools that belong to them.

“Studies have revealed that schools do better under private owners. They will run the schools well and offer alternatives for those not impressed by the public institutions.”

He described the controversies generated by the merger of schools in the state as needless, saying such bad blood will be gone if the schools are returned to the original founders.

  • Amosun tasks clerics on peace

    Amosun tasks clerics on peace

Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State on Thursday called on clerics in the state to collaborate with his administration to sustain the existing peaceful religious harmony in the state.

The governor made the call in Abeokuta at the 2013 Annual Retreat and Award ceremony of the state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), held at the Cathedral of St. Peter Ake.

Amosun, who spoke through the State Head of Service (HOS), Mrs. Modupe Adekunle, said the church needed to do more to re-awaken the moral senses of Christians.

He counseled religious leaders to preach sermons that could re-direct their adherents to the path of truth and peace needed for socio-economic growth of the society.

The governor declared that no meaningful development could be achieved in an atmosphere devoid of peace.

He said that his administration would support religious programmes “that seek to promote peace for the socio-economic development of the state.’’

Amosun enjoined the awardees to rise to the challenges of the time by sincerely offering themselves to serve God, through selfless service to the people of the state.

“No sacrifice could be greater than the one paid by our Saviour on the Cross of Calvary by exhibiting the attributes of genuine love,’’ the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the governor as saying at the retreat.

Earlier in his sermon, Archbishop Magnus Atilade, the National Vice Chairman and Chairman South-West of CAN, urged clerics to shun tendencies that could lead to crack within the Christian fold.

He said the nation would only flourish in an atmosphere of peace and prayed that God should `touch’ the hearts of all those formenting trouble for Nigeria.
