Sports Minister, Maigari meet over Eagles’ bonuses

The Minister of Sports Dr. Tammy Danagogo has  waded into the brewing crisis between the Super Eagles and  the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) over  the world football governing body’s $8 million allocation to the federation.

The players had protested to the NFF chairman Alhaji Aminu Maigari, in the United States (US) demanding their own share of the money and threatened that should the federation refuse to pay them the money they were not going to play in the opening match of the FIFA 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

But the NFF it was gathered claimed that they have only received $1 million from FIFA out of the $8 million with which they have been organising friendlies and pre-World Cup preparations.

It was also gathered that in addition to the FIFA $1 million, the Federal Government has made available to the NFF N850m out of the N1.4 billion total budget for the tournament.

In a meeting held between Dr. Danagogo and Alhaji Maigari, at the Maksoud Plaza Hotel, Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Monday evening, the minister charged the NNF boss to negotiate with the team to be able to reach an agreement so that the players’ morale would be boosted during the tournament.

The minister was of the view that the welfare of the team should be paramount during the tournament adding that ” if we do not treat them well and make them happy, they may just go into the tournament and perform badly and ensure that we pack our bags and return.

“So they are the reasons why Nigeria is participating in the tournament and we should do everything within our powers to ensure that we do our best for the team”.

He pledged to also personally appeal to the players to put the interests of the nation first during the tournament.

  • MAIGARI – Football is my life!

MAIGARI – Football is my life!

IN Bauchi, descendants from the popular Maigari family are known for many things, especially royalty and football.

Today, a scion of the family, Alhaji Aminu Maigari, is holding forte at the helm of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the amiable man has brought so much verve to the game with unprecedented success in recent years.

Yet Maigari maintains a modest mien in an exclusive interview with The Nation’s Sport & Style, saying nothing gives him so much buzz in life than the beautiful game of football.

“All my life, it has always been football and I have devoted my life to the game of football,” says Maigari, sitting behind his desk in his office adorned with assorted trophies and awards.”I played from my school days and I was at one time or the other, a captain, team manager, FA chairman and all that.

“I have devoted all my life to football because apart from playing football, I had been chairman of all the major clubs in Bauchi and was also chairman of Bauchi Football Association for a decade.

“I was the chairman of Bauchi sub-seat when Nigeria hosted the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in 2009, a board member and acting president of the NFF until I became the president. By and large, I have been a football person and devoted the significant part of my life to the game.

” I actually stopped playing recently as a result of my knee injury which was operated upon in 2010; you can see that I have been a football person all my life and I want to remain so,” he said as a matter of fact.

When you talk about a country, you talk about the First Family. The Maigaris are truly passionate about football and the NFF’s President was forthcoming on some of the faces behind the scene of his successful reign.

“The football family is like my extended family because I’m at home in any part of the country,” maintains Maigari, who was recently crowned ‘the Igwe (King) of Nigerian football on a social network platform for his meritorious performance since he came on board in 2010.

“Oh! Moraks, you want me to talk about my personal family?” he protested initially.”Okay, I have a fairly small family of about 10 people. “My first son who is now a businessman played football casually but my third child is a keen football lover and he is the captain of his school’s football team at the University of Sunderland in the UK.

“My first daughter is happily married with two kids and I have others who are still in school and they all love football. It may also interest you to know that my late father was a big time footballer during his days in the 1940s and 1950s when football was played for peanuts.

“You can see that football has been and would always be part of my family,” Maigari enthused as he spoke eloquently about other things dear to his heart. Excerpts…

You were recently called the Igwe of Nigerian football on a social media platform, how do you feel personally about the achievements recorded so far under your tenure as NFF’s President?

There is nothing to be compared with the recognition of one’s contribution to Nigerian football by the public and press, but it reminds us about the fact that we have to do more. Like every human being, I’m delighted that a majority of Nigerians are happy with what we have achieved so far. All of these achievements were as a result of a peaceful atmosphere within the football family as well as the support we get from Nigerians, especially that of President Goodluck Jonathan. What I’m saying in effect is that the achievements we recorded so far were as a result of significant support from the football family and Nigerians. On our own part, we shall continue to work hard to make Nigeria great.

The next big project for you is the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, how prepared is the national team for the assignment?

We are focussed and prepared right from the players to the coaches; the board and management team of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).The government has already given us its full backing towards ensuring that we do well in Brazil. We equally have tremendous support from the football family; stakeholders and Nigerians as such, what we are waiting for is the kick off of our first game against Iran on June 16.

But there are rumours that you are not at peace with the Super Eagles’ coaching crew, especially Stephen Keshi, how true is this?

Just want to use the opportunity of this platform, to let Nigerians know that we are solidly behind the Super Eagles and the coaching crew; as such, we are not going to do anything to undermine them. If we don’t trust Keshi from the beginning, we wouldn’t have picked him as our coach and I want those who are spreading this unfortunate rumour to put an end to it. We are preparing for the biggest football tournament in the world and we don’t need any distraction. I want to appeal to everyone to let us face our World Cup preparations without distractions. The World Cup is not about the NFF or Keshi or Maigari; it is about Nigeria and I’m therefore appealing to the public and the media to allow us do things under a favourable environment. We believe that the Super Eagles have all it takes to do well in Brazil but that can only be possible if we provide them the enabling environment to prepare. As far as the NFF and I are concerned, we have given our coaches maximum support and the free hands to pick the players for the tournament and we are also doing everything to ensure that they have adequate preparation before getting to Brazil because it is our mandate to do well at the World Cup.

Sir, talking about mandate, what target has the NFF set for The Super Eagles and Coach Stephen Keshi at the World Cup?

We have not set any target for the team and our mandate is simply for them to go to the World Cup and do well. We are not putting them under unnecessary pressure. Rather, we just want them to go out there and do their best. It is unnecessary to set a target that they must win the World Cup because if they don’t, that would be a huge disappointment. For instance, the USA’94 World Cup did not win the World Cup but they are still regarded as one of the best teams that Nigeria has ever produced; so we want the Super Eagles to make Nigerians happy with their performance in Brazil.

Are you impressed with the quality of players selected and their performances ahead of the World Cup?

Personally, I’m happy with this group of players and I would implore all of us to keep supporting them. A lot of them have performed creditably well for their clubs and what they need is encouragement from all of us for them to give their best in Brazil.

People often say being the president of the NFF is a tough job, what is your management style?

It is all about patience and recognising the fact that nobody knows it all. I see myself just as a head of the family and as a good leader, I have no option than to listen to others. I tap ideas from my colleagues and I’m the type that is ready to learn. We work as a team and the all-knowing syndrome is never part of my agenda as I’m ready to learn new things. I always have it at the back of my mind that I’m privileged to be here. My style is all about love, patience and humility- to see myself as the lowest person in the midst of everybody. We are open to advice from everybody, and that is part of the secrets of this administration. Heading the NFF is just a privilege and opportunity; so one must be ready to listen to the advice from other people. It is an enormous task but I know how to delegate and micro-manage but, importantly, I have listening ears. God has been given us the wisdom to be able to deal with people and issues that come up from time to time. What I run is an open-door policy because this is big portfolio and you need to listen to people.

I learned you are a Manchester United fan, is everybody in the family a United fan too?

You will be disappointed to know that I’m not a Manchester United fan as some people claim, rather, I’m the Number One supporter of all Nigeria’s national teams. I was asked the same question when I was at one Premier League event in England. I don’t really have a special attachment to any club and it is only human to have a choice when two teams are playing but I’m not deeply attached to any team. Yes, I love watching the English Premier League but I don’t want to give myself unnecessary pressure by supporting a particular team. The teams I’m passionate about are all the Nigerian national sides and I’m restless when any one of them is playing.

Who are your all-time Nigeria’s best footballers and favourites?

One player I admire so much when I was growing up was the late Garba Okoye because he was an exceptional player with a great dribbling quality. He was a great player in his days and you can liken him to players like Nwankwo Kanu and Jay Jay Okocha, but he was greater than them. In fact, all great Nigerian players are my favourites, I admire the likes of Segun Odegbami, George Hassan, Ismaila Mabo and some those great names of the past. In the new generation, we have Sunday Oliseh, Kanu, and Okocha and at present, I’m in love with all our current players for their commitment to the national teams.

Former players have really benefited during your tenure as the NFF’s President, what accounts for this?

There is a particular stanza that I so much love in our national anthem which says ‘the labour of heroes past should not be in vain.’ These were the players who served this country so well and we are of the opinion that they should be gainfully employed even after their professional football career. We need to encourage them because they served the country so well in the past and it is part of our deliberate policy to support these former Nigerian internationals.

You look trim and fit for your age, what is your keep-fit regimen?

I eat well and, actually, choose the kind of things I eat. I exercise regularly and above all, I don’t mount unnecessary pressure on myself. As a believer in God, I allow things to take their natural course because no matter how much we try, it’s God that blesses all we do.

By the way, what is your favourite food?

    Tuwo shinkafa with vegetable soup.

What determines what you wear in terms of clothing?

I like to appear simple because that is part of humility. I don’t like appearing too loud in order not to draw unnecessary attention to myself. Humility is part of my upbringing and home training and I think you don’t have to dress loud to be noticed. I’m brought up to appear simple so that I would not have a high opinion of myself. I’m a simple human being and I always want to dress very simple.

During the last Presidential Media Chat, President Goodluck Jonathan was asked if he was going to run for a second term; permit me to ask if you would run again after the end of your tenure?

(General laughter). I think the biggest task ahead of me is the forthcoming 2014 World Cup in Brazil; that is my focus now. My prayer now is for the Super Eagles to do well at the World Cup.

  • 1 year as NSC’s DG Ndanusa, Maigari hail Elegbeleye on sports development

1 year as NSC’s DG Ndanusa, Maigari hail Elegbeleye on sports development

Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) President Engineer Sani Ndanusa and Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Alhaji Aminu Maigari has showered encomiums on the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon Gbenga Elegbeleye for excellent performance so far as he clocked a year in office on Wednesday.

President Goodluck Jonathan had on Wednesday, May 15th, 2013 at the Federal Executive Council meeting announced the appointment of Honourable Gbenga Elegbeleye as the new Director General of the NSC with immediate effect after the retirement of former Director General of the Commission, Dr Patrick Ekeji.

According to Ndanusa, a former Sports Minister when Elegbeleye was a Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Sports, the DG of the NSC has made a remarkable achievement since he took over from Ekeji.

“The DG since he came has been working very hard to stabilise, sanitise and also reposition sports in Nigeria. He came with some wealth of experience being a legislator he knows how to follow through lobbying as well as discuss with people to get things done.

“One of his good qualities as a leader is that he appreciates people’s views. He appreciates your views and talents. He never leaves any idea out but of course he sheaves and takes the best. He is a listener and in some areas he will say look I am learning this one, let me know how it is.

“One thing I know he detests is to say that we are not following the international best practices. He is not limiting sports growth to Nigeria. He sees sports to grow beyond Nigeria and so long as we key in into the world that is when we will do it right. He wants to connect Nigerian sports to the continental and international best practices. So long as we key in that is how we can measure our performance in world sports. He came in at the beginning as a round peg in a round hole because of his experience while in the National Assembly.

“I was a serving Minister when he was in the House of Rep as the Deputy Chairman of House Committee on Sports. In fact, I must give him one sports credit for being part of the team that created the Community Sports Centers to be built all over the country because of his passionate thinking about the grassroots. He believes that sports can only develop through grass-roots programmes. What he preaches is mass participation in sports and you cannot do this without mass infrastructures.

“Generally it has not been easy when it comes to the issue of funding (at the National Sports Commission) with the bottleneck but I think with the experience and networking that I know him to do very well he has used that to bring some improvement even into financing and relationship with the federations. Federations are mainly the foot soldiers of sports development. Hon Elegbeleye has been able to come to terms with them and working amicably with them the same with the Nigeria Olympics Committee (NOC).

“He is a close friend of the NOC and he understands it has an international body which has to follow best practice. So we have been working very closely together and I can say the relationship and the synergy between the NOC and the National Sports Commission now is quite firm and very cordial.

“He has also taking a serious look at the issue of the Military Games because it is in the Military and Para-military we have been getting medals no matter the colour. We can easily remember the likes of Chioma Ajunwa, late Sunday Bada and Gazama that have won laurels for this country. So with his leadership we at the Committee have already done a road map that would help us achieve success from military sports,” Ndanusa explained.

The NFF President, Aminu Maigari confessed that the DG helped to bring peace back to football family in Nigeria.

“Hon Gbenga Elegbeleye, a former law maker and a passionate football lover, has brought stability and peace to sports generally since he assumed duty a year ago. He brought peace to the football family and made the system very peaceful.

“He is somebody that has passion for sports generally and football in particular. He is somebody a lot of people and especially my humble self is so proud of. This is not the beginning point for him because he has been promoting and developing sports since he was in the House of Representatives then as Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Sports.

“As far as I am concerned he has done well so far handling the affairs of sports as the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC). He has done so well so far particularly in the area of football and you can see what we have achieved since he was appointed.

“He has supported the Nigeria Football Federation in all our programmes which led to our winning the U- 17 World Cup for a record fourth time in October 2013 after the last one we won in 2007. The Super Eagles also qualified for the 2014 World Cup and the Eagles also won bronze in Nigeria’s maiden participation in this year’s Africa Nations Championship held in South Africa while the female junior national teams also qualified for the World Cup. But the most important thing is that he brought peace and unity to the football house that enabled us to achieve all that I have mentioned. So his achievement in this past one year has been fantastic,” Maigari disclosed.

Abia Governor hails Maigari on achievements

The Executive  Governor of Abia State, Chief Theodore Orji on Tuesday poured encomiums on the President of Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Aminu Maigari, on the latter’s leadership style and several accomplishments in the past four years in office.

“I must praise your excellent leadership style, which has been commended by several leading stakeholders of the game in Nigeria, Africa and the world, and it is obvious that your style is working.

“Our country has never had it so good on and off the field of play. Your administration has achieved so much within its less-than-four years in office, with triumphs at the FIFA U-17 World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations having been followed by qualification for the FIFA World Cup.”

Stating that Maigari’s administration has far surpassed all before it, Governor Orji added that he is wishing the Super Eagles the very best at the 20th FIFA World Cup finals taking place in Brazil this summer, adding that ‘I am sure that in your usual style, you will provide the team with adequate preparation for the championship.”

Speaking earlier, the NFF President commended the efforts of Governor Orji and his administration for their giant strides in football development, particularly sponsorship of three top clubs in the country: Enyimba FC and Abia Warriors in the Nigeria Professional Football League, and Abia Comets in the Nigeria National League.

“I must also praise your efforts in the area of health-care, road development, youth empowerment and general infrastructural development,” Maigari said.

The NFF President, who was in Abia State for the South East Zonal Football Summit which took place in the State capital, Umuahia on Tuesday, was accompanied to the Governor’s Office by High Chief Emeka Inyama, Chairman of the NFF Media and Publicity Committee and Chairman of the Nigeria National League. At the summit, the South East Zone, comprising Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Anambra and Enugu States, passed a vote of confidence on the NFF Executive Committee and the Federation.

Eagles ready for 2015 AFCON qualifiers – NFF

The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Aminu Maigari, believes that there is nothing to worry about as the Super Eagles will be very much ready for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nation qualifiers which begin in September.

Nigeria has been drawn in Group A alongside South Africa and Sudan, as well as the winner of the two preliminary rounds among Namibia/Congo Brazzaville and Libya/Rwanda, and Maigari who was at the draws ceremony in Egypt on Sunday believes nothing can hinder Nigeria from progressing from the group.

“We are in Group A and we will come out with an ‘A’ grade,” an optimistic Maigari told KickOffNigeria.com.

The qualifiers commence in the first week of September, and all six matches will be played over two-and-half months between September and November.

This is as a result of the decision by the Confederation of African Football to move the tournament to odd years, and the African Nations Championship to even years.

Maigari, however, informed that the Federation’s primary focus at the moment is geared towards ensuring Nigeria excels at the World Cup this summer.

“We are presently focused on making a major impact at the FIFA World Cup finals in Brazil in the summer,” Maigari, also a member of CAF’s Organising Committee for the Africa Cup of Nations, said.

“But I tell you, by the time the qualifying series for Morocco 2015 starts, the Super Eagles will be super ready.”

Hajia Mairi Hayatou died on Wednesday, 9th April, 2014 after a brief illness and was buried in Garoua, Cameroon.

“We deeply mourn with the father of African football, Issa Hayatou at this trying time and pray that God will give him the fortitude to bear the great loss,” Maigari said on Friday.

The NFF President added: “I know Hayatou to be quite close to the sister, and indeed his entire family. The NFF and the Nigeria football family identify with him in his moment of sorrow and pray that God will give the departed eternal rest.”

Africa’s football supremo flew into Garoua on Friday to mourn with family and relations.

Maigari wants Flamingoes’ winning mentality sustained

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Aminu Maigari has called on the Under-17 Women National Team, Flamingoes, to go all out for victory in Sunday’s final Group D clash with Mexico at the on-going 4th FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica.

The NFF boss spoke in Alajuela while praising the girls for their strong mentality that saw them through in the 2-1 defeat of Colombia on Wednesday, which shot the Flamingoes into the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup quarter finals for the third successive time.

“Against China and Colombia, you showed excellent mentality and took the three points without brooking any debate. For me, the NFF and the entire Nigerian football family, there is still a long way to go.

“I do not align with those people who feel that Sunday’s clash with the Mexicans is an academic affair. Yes, we are already in the quarter finals. But it is important that we go for a win in that game in order to sustain our winning mentality,” Maigari said.

He continued: “I am proud of what you have done so far in this tournament. We are winning, so we should sustain that winning mentality to carry us all the way to the trophy. If we rest on our oars against Mexico, we will lose the momentum and the winning mentality.”

Victories over China and Colombia made Nigeria one of the countries to reach the last eight with one match to spare, joining fellow African flag-bearers Ghana, Italy, Venezuela, Japan and Mexico.

“Once you learn to win, you don’t rest on your oars. No hostage-taking. That was the mentality that took the Golden Eaglets to the world title in the United Arab Emirates last year and I know it will serve you girls well here in Costa Rica,” added Maigari.

Nigeria take on Mexico on Sunday with one eye on their quarter final clash with the winner of Group C, scheduled for Thursday.

The President of the Confederation of African Football, Issa Hayatou, has invited the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Aminu Maigari and heads of four other federations whose national teams will be representing the continent at this summer’s FIFA World Cup, to a special meeting in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, on Friday.

Kickoffnigeria.com reports that Hayatou is expected to task Maigari and his four counterparts from Algeria, Cameroun, Ghana and Ivory Coast on their teams’ preparations for the big event starting on June 12.

No African team has made it to the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup in the past 19 editions.

Only Cameroon (1990), Senegal (2002) and Ghana (2010) have flown Africa’s flag into the last eight of the tournament with Cameroon narrowly beaten by England in 1990 and Senegal eliminated by Turkey in Japan 12 years later. Ghana lost to Uruguay four years ago in South Africa.

    • Insists Glass House never thought of foreign coach

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Aminu Maigari is livid with the reports going on that the NFF is planning to impose a foreign assistant on Super Eagles head coach, Stephen Keshi.

It has been widely disseminated that the football federation had met with the current African Coach of the Year recently and proposed a foreign assistant to the Nigerian gaffer which he turned down.

But Keshi is said to have revealed that he is unaware about the news making waves that the NFF want to impose a foreign assistant on him.

“The NFF president, Maigari has never agreed for any assistant to be added to my coaching team at all, so I am not sure who invents these stories and what their aims are.

“ I said I wanted Sylvanus Okpala back as my assistant and Andyson Ogugua my video analyst (these two were part of the back room staff that won the AFCON in South Africa last year) but I have not been given an answer on if or when I can have them back,” a published report cites.

Maigari however said that none of his members had suggested, recommended or even tried to impose the idea of a foreign technical assistant on Keshi.

“Some people with fertile imagination invented this and sold it to the media and they took it up without proper investigation.

“It is a shame because the NFF had made it clear long ago that it would not impose anyone on Keshi, and that still stands henceforth.

“What pained me most is that we NFF people have been insulted for this speculation that we know nothing about,” Maigari said angrily.

Asked whether Keshi’s former assistant, Okpala who was sacked after the 2013 Nations Cup, would be called back to the Super Eagles, Maigari said: “We would settle that as soon as possible.”

Maigari also revealed that the present football administration would continue to support Keshi and his wards for them to make a good impact at this year’s showpiece in Brazil.

“I have said this many times that the football house will continue to support Keshi and the team for them to succeed at the World Cup,” he said.
