Maikori was picked up in Lagos and flown to Abuja preparatory to his possible arraignment in court tomorrow.
The owner of Chocolate City is believed to have been picked up on the strength of the information he posted on social media about two weeks ago in which he claimed that six students of the College of Education in Gidan-Waya, Kaduna, were killed by Fulani herdsmen during an attack on the school.
Among the dead, according to him, was his driver’s younger brother.
The information turned out to be untrue, prompting a retraction and apology from him to the authorities of the school and Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State who said false information has always been the major cause of the incessant killings in Southern Kaduna.
Former Education Minister Oby Ezekwesili revealed yesterday her efforts to make El-Rufai change his mind about prosecuting Maikori more so after the activist had apologized.
Ezekwezili, in a series of tweets said: “I urged the @GovKaduna to get @Audu out & he replied that his policy of Consequences was important for stemming killings in #SouthernKaduna.
“The @GovKaduna stated that the actions for which @Audu apologized inflamed the#SouthKaduna conflict more & so the law taking its course.

“I told @GovKaduna that it was best to FREE @Audu & use this as the Govt’s POLICY MOMENT to get its MESSAGE of CONSEQUENCES thru to Public.
“@GovKaduna stated that he had personally reached out asking @Audu to not post those particularly untrue stories but he had continued.
“I pressed on the NECESSITY for@GovKaduna to act to FREE @Audu and allow all sides to LEARN the RIGHT LESSON from this painful episode.

THE Governor of Anambra State, Governor Willie Obiano, in a brief ceremony recently hosted the management of Global Gaming Company Limited led by its Chairman, Yahaya Maikori at the Governor’s Lodge in Awka.

Present at the ceremony were the officials of Anambra State Investment Promotion and Protection Agency (ANSIPPA), the arm of the state government which facilitated the signing of an MOU for the establishment of a state lottery and structured gaming operations in the state were also present. Also present were the Secretary to the State Government and the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General and his counterpart in the Information, Culture and Tourism Ministry.

The traditional ruler of Umuoji and Chairman of ANSIPPA, Igwe Cyril Enweze said he was happy with the arrangement which will introduce scratch card and other types of gaming into the state. Enweze told Obiano that the partnership with Global Gaming will satisfy the internal revenue objectives of the state. He revealed that the deal is for an initial period of 10 years which is renewable for five years.

Explaining his company’s stake is in the multimillion naira scheme, Maikori said it will be entirely funded by Global Gaming through its technical partners, Grupo Pefaco, which is committing full funding for the initial take off with USD11 million. He expressed confidence that his company will make enough from ticket sales and other sources to keep to the terms of paying N375 million to the state government after the first seven months.

Congratulating Global Gaming for winning the keenly contested bid, Obiano urged the company to raise the expected income to N400 million monthly. • How Chocolate City came about, by Audu Maikori

How Chocolate City came about, by Audu Maikori

Popular Nigerian music entrepreneur, and former head honcho of Chocolate City, Audu Maikori reminisced about his foray into music management, saying; “The story of Chocolate City started when I was in the University of Jos, and wanted to create an event; a rave of sorts something that would bring us some money while in school.”

According to Maikori who hinted that he got into it with a couple of friends, the name of the label cropped up in the course of brainstorming, and everyone liked it.

“We started Chocolate City with the promotional aspects of it. At the beginning, we went from one hotel to the other, and had a DJ; it was really more like a club, but more of a mobile club around school. That is really where it started from, later on when I started practice and decided to register my own company; I decided to use the name Chocolate City. So that is how it started.”

Going down memory lane, the label exec who is a painter, poet, and songwriter saw a gap in the industry, and believed that there was no platform for creative young people to meet, and rub minds, save for the regular artiste forums, which were cerebral, and enriching, but  rather dry; totally unattractive to Millennials.

He said, “In 2001, my very good friend and business partner, Ben Okugbo and I were part of a literary society called the Abuja Literary Society. One day we attended a program, and on our way back we were very excited and I said, ‘it’s cool but I think it’s dry. I think we should create something that is more contemporary, closer to our demographic.’ I saw the problem; the twenty something year olds weren’t coming for the event. We wanted something that was different, which was a place where creative people could meet and enhance each other, so ALS was totally out of it.”

Maikori said he went into music promotion to meet the needs of creative young people, and before long things started to happen.

As he put it, “since nothing was happening, I decided to promote artistes. And I think that in the course of promoting them that it happened. The first month we had seven people, and in a couple of months we had thirty something people.”

Proving the truth of the saying that when you make things happen for people, good things will come to you, Maikori avers that in the course of running his music management gig, he met some struggling musicians, and decided to manage them. One thing led to another, and today the rest (as they say) is history. He concludes, “Sometime in 2003 or thereabouts, Paul was transferred to Jos, and that was how I met MI (Abaga). MI had just moved there and MI and Jesse Jagz were based there.  And I started another branch in Lagos. And it was that interaction with them that made it clear to me that they needed management, and that they needed a vehicle to do that.”
