  • Reps seek probe of Maina’s reinstatement

The House of Representatives yesterday constituted an ad hoc committee to investigate the disappearance, re- appearance and reinstatement and promotion of Abdulrasheed Maina.

A motion to this effect raised by Hon. Jagaba Adams Jagaba was adopted.

The police, he said, accused him of mismanaging over N100 billion pension funds and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) declared him wanted in 2015.

According to the lawmaker, the National Assembly invited Maina to appear before its committee but he turned down the invitations.

” He was formally sacked from his position as an Assistant Director in the Ministry of Interior in 2013 by the Goodluck Jonathan administration.

“He fled this country to the United Arab Emirates since 2013 to avoid arrest and prosecution,” Jagaba said.

When Speaker Yakubu Dogara called for a vote on the motion. It was passed by majority vote and referred to an ad hoc committee that is yet to be constituted.

The lawmakers also urged the EFCC to immediately arrest Maina for subsequent prosecution ” in order to serve as a deterrent to others who might have corrupt tendencies.”

  • HoS denies approving Maina’s reinstatement

The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita has denied approving the reinstatement of former Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, AbdulRasheed Maina to the Ministry of Interior.

In a statement by her Media assistant Mohammed Manga, the HoS denied that Maina’s reinstatement and posting came from her office.

“The attention of the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation has been drawn to several media reports that the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation has approved the reinstatement into the Federal Civil Service of Alhaji Abdulrasheed Abdullahi Maina and his subsequent posting to the Ministry of Interior.

“The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation wishes to inform the public that the reinstatement and posting of Alhaji Abdulrasheed Abdullahi Maina never emanated from the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.

“Consequently, the purported reinstatement and posting by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation is totally erroneous and misleading.”

Mrs. Oyo-Ita and the Minister of Interior, Lt Gen AbdulRaham Danbazau are speaking differently on the same issue, the Minister had earlier said he is not involve in Maina,s promotion, stating tat Maina,s posting was from the HOS.

The minister, in a statement signed by his press secretary, Ehisienmen Osaigbovo, in Abuja on Sunday, said Maina was deployed to the Ministry of Interior in an acting capacity following the retirement of the director in charge of the human resources department.

The statement read, “The ex-chairman of the Presidential Task Force Team on Pension Reforms, Abdulrasheed Maina, was posted a few days ago to the Ministry of Interior by the Office of the Head of Service in an acting capacity to fill a vacancy following the retirement of the director heading the human resources department in the ministry.”

  • Pensioners seek Maina’s reinstatement

    Pensioners seek Maina’s reinstatement

Federal pensioners, under the aegis of the National Association of Federal Retirees (NAFR), have called for the reinstatement of the Abdulrasheed Maina-led Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT).

The pensioners said this would be in the interest of retirees, who want to be paid their pensions regularly.

The federal retirees addressed reporters yesterday in Abuja yesterday on the need to return Maina to his desk.

They said the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), which allegedly stole N2.7 billion, had no right to intervene in the association’s demand for the reinstatement of the disbanded PRTT.

NAFR’s Chairman Emmanuel Omoyeni said the PRTT recorded successes that should be upheld and maintained by Nigerian pensioners.

He said: “It is important for Nigerians to know that the NUP has no business in interfering in the demand of the Federal public service retirees for the reinstatement of the PRTT.

“The NUP officials are not federal pensioners but part of the stealing machinery in the Pension sector…”

  • Protesters demand Maina’s reinstatement

Scores of supporters of the embattled Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), Abdulrasheed Maina, yesterday disrupted traffic flow at the Federal Secretariat, Abuja, when they protested at the Office of the Head of Service (HOS).

    They called for Maina’s reinstatement.

The protestors, comprising civil society groups, market women and youth groups, said the HOS needed to respect a court ruling, which ordered that Maina be reinstated.

Comrade Ngozika Ihuoma, leader of the demonstrators and the Executive Secretary of Legislative Watch, told reporters that the protest was to push for Maina’s reinstatement as chairman of the PRTT.

Besides, he said, it was to draw attention to the fact that since last November, when the HOS usurped the payment of pension of federal retirees, the process had become “unwieldy with backlog of pensions”.

Ihuoma said the Federal High Court, Abuja, on March 27, did not only vacate the arrest warrant issued by the Senate against Maina but also directed that he be returned to continue with his task at the PRTT.

He said: “This is not a protest march. Rather, it is a solidarity protest for Abdulrasheed Maina, over the March 27 court judgment in his favour.

“We are here today from over 10 civil society groups, market women and youth associations to urge the Head of Service to fast-track Maina’s return to office.

“We cannot continue to claim to observe the rule of law but fail to obey court rulings on very fundamental issues such as this.

“The PRTT, as you know, has done well. But some people, out of their own personal score, have set out to derail the process of streamlining federal pension.

“But thank God, the courts saw through it and have ruled favourably on the suit brought by Maina.”

The protestors later moved to the Federal High Court, where they protested the HOS’ non-compliance with its judgment.

Justice Adamu Bello of the Federal High Court, Abuja, had issued an order of perpetual injunction restraining the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Abubakar from arresting Maina.

The court made the order after it vacated the warrant of arrest the Senate issued against him.

The Senate had declared the ex-pension boss wanted, following his alleged refusal to appear before it to explain his alleged complicity in the illegal diversion of funds meant for pensioners.
