    Military seizes one million litres of stolen crude, destroys 72 illegal refineries in one week

    Troops on operations against oil thieves in the Niger Delta region seized 1,133,800 litres of stolen crude oil, 228,770 litres of illegally refined disiel, and 20,000 litres of petrol in the past week.

    The troops also destroyed 76 illegal refineries, 487 dugout pits, 32 boats and 12 storage tanks.

    The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj-Gen. Edward Buba, announced this in a statement yesterday.

    Gen. Buba said the troops also arrested 32 oil thieves and rescued 214 kidnapped hostages during several operations in the past week.

    He said: “Meanwhile, during ongoing operations across the country in the week under review, troops neutralised 108 terrorists and arrested 172 criminals.

    “Additionally, troops recovered 66 assorted weapons and 4,087 assorted ammunition.”

    The breakdown of the weapons seized, according to the defence spokesperson, includes one Dushka, one MG, two GPMGs, one RPG launcher, one RPG bomb, one AK56 rifle, 37 AK47 rifles, four MRAPs, two GTs, three fabricated rifles, six Dane guns, three locally made pistols, six magazines, one bandolier and two HH radios.

    He said ammunition seized include 313 rounds of 7.62mm PKT, 2,362 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, 699 rounds of 7.62mm NATO, 201 rounds of 7.62 x 54mm, 503 rounds of 7.62 x 39mm, 9 live cartridges, and one belted of NATO ammo, among other items.

    Gen. Buba said the military is ready “as a formidable force for the emerging threats confronting the nation, particularly occasioned by the prevailing issues of protest in the country that took a violent and subversive dimension. 

    “Indeed, as part of our constitutional responsibilities, we will not relent in tackling these threats to ensure the stability of our nation,” he added.
