I remain South-West PDP chairman, says Olafeso

A factional leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr Eddy Olafeso, says he remains the authentic leader of the party in the South-West zone.

Olafeso  on Wednesday in Akure that his group was re-affirmed as the PDP leaders in the zone during the last convention of the party in Abuja.

Chief Makanjuola Ogundipe, another factional leader of the party, had on Monday in Lagos claimed that he was the authentic chairman of the party in the South-West zone.

Olafeso said: “It is very unfortunate and tendentious for someone to assume that carrying court papers around is enough to make him the leader of the party.

“Even, if they have court papers to back their claims, the case is already at the Appeal Court.

“They should wait till pronouncement of the court before jumping around that they are the leaders of the party in the zone.

“Leadership is freely given by the people and endorsed by the party through all its processes.”

He said that Makanjuola and his group were part of the challenges facing the party since 2011 “till when we won at the Supreme Court in July 12, 2017”.

Olafeso noted that PDP had gone beyond unnecessary antagonism, saying that the party’s focus was to ensure victory at the polls in 2019.

He expressed optimism that all the crises rocking the party would be resolved before its Dec. 9 National Convention.

“Today, I can tell you categorically that South-West PDP under my watch has been able to stabilise the party in Osun, Ogun, Oyo and Lagos States.

“We thank the leadership of the party for the opportunity given us to serve.

“We will continue to do our best to ensure that our party will be positioned in a way that it can begin to win again,” he said.

Trouble brews in S/west PDP leadership ahead party convention

A faction of the People’s Democratic Party ( PDP ) in the South-West has warned the party not to stop it from presenting the zone’s delegates to the Dec. 9 national convention.

The chairman of the faction, Chief Makanjuola Ogundipe, gave the warning at a media briefing in Lagos on Monday.

He said the faction remained the authentic executive in the zone, based on a subsisting court judgement.

Ogundipe said the continued recognition of the Dr Eddy Olafeso-led faction ran foul of the law, as there had been no superior order to nullify the subsisting Abuja court judgement.

“We are the authentic South-West zonal executive of the PDP based on a subsisting court judgement, and we want the party to accord us the due recognition.

“Any other group parading themselves as exco from the zone is committing an illegality as there has been no better judgement to nullify the court judgement affirming us as the authentic executive.

“Moreso, the subsisting court order restrained Olafeso and his group from participating in the Dec. 9 national convention.

“We do not want to constitute any problem to the convention and that is why we are saying the party should operate in accordance with law and allow us to present delegates from the zone.

“In the event that we are excluded, just as we were at the non-elective convention in Port-Harcourt, we shall take the necessary legal action, and that will affect the party in the long run,” he said.

Ogundipe said the Supreme Court judgement affirming Sen. Ahmed Makarfi as Caretaker Chairman did not nullify the leadership of his faction in the zone.

He urged all stakeholders to abide by the rule of law in order not to jeopardize the progress of the party.

Ogundipe cleared Chief Olabode George of the leadership impasse in the zone.

He said that George and other leaders in the zone had resolved to prevail on the national leadership of the party to address “the potential landmine”in the zone.

Ogundipe said his group would continue to do its best for the progress of the party in the zone.

He said an all-encompassing meeting of stakeholders in the zone, including national chairmanship aspirants, would soon hold, to decide a united position of the zone on the convention.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the party has fixed Dec. 9 for convention to elect new national executive officers.

  • S/West PDP hails judgement sacking Fayose’s men from exco

S/West PDP hails judgement sacking Fayose’s men from exco

The Southwest Zonal Chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has welcomed an Ado Ekiti Federal High Court judgment which sacked the factional exco loyal to Governor Ayo Fayose saying the verdict has signaled an end to impunity, abuse of party constitution and one-man dictatorship in Ekiti State chapter.

The PDP National Vice Chairman (Southwest), Makanjuola Ogundipe, said the zonal leadership of the party wholeheartedly welcomed the judgment which he said would reposition the Ekiti chapter and make the platform attractive to politicians and electorate ahead of the next elections.

The Court had on Tuesday sacked the Gboyega Oguntuase-led exco loyal to Fayose and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize and conduct official business with the Williams Ajayi-led exco which instituted the case.

Speaking in Ado Ekiti on Wednesday on the heels of the court verdict which took the control of the state structure from Fayose, Ogundipe hailed the court for doing justice and rescuing it from the stranglehold of the governor whom he accused of sending prominent leaders and members away from the party.

Ogundipe said the Judiciary has once again demonstrated an uncommon courage and never allow “those intoxicated with transient power” to pocket it adding that “this arm of government has been the saving grace of the nation’s democracy.”

The zonal party boss who claimed that Fayose has turned himself to an “emperor” in Ekiti PDP alleged that the governor wrote a list of the exco of his faction in his sitting room and masterminded parallel congresses where he imposed his stooges most of who left for Labour Party (LP) with him before returning in 2014.

Ogundipe said: “We wholeheartedly welcome this judgment; it is a judgment for the people, judgment for the rule of law, judgment against imposition, judgment against impunity and judgment against dictatorial tendencies of one man.

“We want this judgment to transcend to every part of the Southwest for our party to move forward and teach people like Fayose some lessons that there is no room for impunity, lawlessness and abuse of power in our party again.

“Here is a governor who will never respect the constitution of our party; the congress guidelines say that we should go and conduct congresses in our various wards and in his own case, he produced a list from his own sitting room but in our case, we went to the streets and brought our party men to the congresses to vote.

“Fayose doesn’t respect the rule of law and that is why he has used his power to prevent the swearing-in of Toyin Obayemi as a member of the House of Assembly contrary to the judgment of the court by resorting to delay tactics.”

Ogundipe who was the state party chairman when Fayose won the 2014 governorship poll said many PDP chieftains within and outside Ekiti are now regretting their support for the governor as he chased some out of the party while others who could not leave have been sidelined.

He said further: “Fayose has selfisihly sent away everybody that contributed to his emergence as governor. Some of us who were part of the process had warned that Fayose was coming to exhibit a winner-takes-all attitude in PDP in Ekiti.

“Fayose told us that he was a changed man and the question I want to ask is that can anybody see any change in him? In my own judgment, he was getting worse and that was why we were skeptical supporting him because it would do our party no good but the truth has come out now.

“When you find a leader who does not trust any follower, that kind of leader should not be trusted. We want to thank the Judiciary for coming to the rescue of our party in Ekiti and we believe that this judgment will help our party to move forward.”

Southwest PDP backs zoning of chairman to North

The Southwest Zone of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday threw its weight behind the proposal by some leaders in the zone to retain the position of the national chairman in the North.

It argued at a stakeholders meeting in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital yesterday, that the proposal would help PDP regain its strength in the North after a woeful outing in the 2015 elections.

After listening to various leaders across the six states in the zone, the Zonal Chairman, Makanjuola Ogundipe, wrapped up the meeting by taking endorsements of participants and presented it as the position of the zone.

According to Makanjuola, the proposal for the North to retain the national chairmanship does not necessarily translate to elongation of term for the incumbent, Alli Modu Sherrif.

“It also does not forbid any other zone from showing interest in the position. No one person or group can deny any member the right to aspire to any office or vote and be voted for. We are in a democracy, not autocracy. We have canvassed our views. Let those with contrary opinions or positions put forward theirs. We need not abuse one another.” He said.

  • More Ekiti PDP aspirants back consensus option

More Ekiti PDP aspirants back consensus option

More Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirants in Ekiti State have backed the call for a consensus candidate.

Despite former Governor Ayo Fayose’s insistence that the party’s flag bearer should emerge through a primary election, four more aspirants have supported the consensus option.

The four aspirants – Mr. Bodunde Adeyanju, Mrs. Bola Oloyede, Mr. Adewale Aribisala and Dr. Peter Obafemi – spoke with reporters yesterday after picking up their nomination forms at the PDP national secretariat.

This brings the number of aspirants, who have obtained the form, to 12.

Adeyanju is a former aide of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

They said the consensus option saves cost and reduces disaffection among contestants.

Fayose has continued to object to a consensus candidate, saying it is arbitrary, undemocratic and capable of throwing up an unpopular candidate.

He urged the party’s national leadership to fulfil its promise to ensure a level-playing field for all aspirants through a transparent primary election.

Another aspirant, Chief Bosede Dada, objected to a consensus candidate, describing it as “undemocratic.”

She said: “I do not want consensus. I have paid for my form and I am ready for the primary. The Chairman, Mr. Makanjuola Ogundipe, has assured me that there will be a primary.”

Other aspirants, who have obtained their nomination forms, are former Minister for Police Affairs Navy Captain Caleb Olubolade(rtd.); Prince Dayo Adeyeye; Senator Gbenga Aluko; Chief Bisi Omoyeni; Chief Biodun Aluko and Fayose.

32 aspirants bid for Ekiti PDP ticket

Thirty-two aspirants are jostling for the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) governorship ticket in Ekiti State.

The party’s primary election is slated for early March.

It was learnt that the aspirants were scheming to outdo one another.

Sources said some were associating with the Presidency to garner support in the primary.

Recently, some members accused the State PDP Chairman, Chief Makanjuola Ogundipe, of planning to raise “a fictitious Consensus Template Drafting Committee”, which they described as “a grand scheme to skew some aspirants into advantages”.

The party’s Secretary, Dr. Tope Aluko, and Pastor Oluwawole, in a statement last Wednesday, said Ogundipe had been avoiding members of the State Working Committee (SWC) since he returned from Abuja, after a meeting of the aspirants with President Goodluck Jonathan.

Ogundipe denied the allegation, saying he was waiting for yesterday’s meeting before briefing them.

Members of the SWC met at Ogundipe’s home yesterday to discuss the mobilisation of the people for the forthcoming voter registration.

A former Acting Governor, Biodun Ayeni, has joined the governorship race.

Speaking with reporters in Ado-Ekiti, Ayeni said politics is not a do-or-die affair.

He said: “I have no reason to see the election as a war because I am not fighting for myself but the interest of the party.”
