2015 poll: We’ve learnt from Jonathan’s errors —Makarfi

The chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has said that the party has learnt a lesson from the errors that culminated in the defeat of former President Goodluck Jonathan at the presidentail poll in 2015.

He also said the former President was betrayed by sycophants he surrounded himself with in the build-up to the election.

Jonathan had accused some powerful Northern elements in the PDP of betraying him and working against his interests in the 2015 presidential election; a situation he said was responsible for his defeat at the poll.

But Makarfi said apart from betrayal by sycophants, the PDP leadership made many mistakes by failing to take advice from the right people.

According to him, the sycophants that ruined Jonathan’s chances at the poll were not only Northerners but spread across the six geopolitical zones.

In an exclusive interview with our correspondents in Abuja on Thursday, Makarfi said, “The PDP made many mistakes and I have said it before. Of course there were betrayers left, right and centre, even those of us who stood for other elective offices we can be talking that way.

“We made mistakes, we were not listening to what people had to tell us. We were too comfortable.

“Then, of course, sycophancy took over. And when sycophancy takes over, what would you end up with?

“There were all kinds of betrayals. We have learnt our lessons now. I don’t want to cry over spilled milk.

“We should learn from the mistakes that we have made for not listening to the true voices of the people.

“Going forward, we should try to avoid a situation where we would be saying someone betrayed us.

“No matter what, you will find Judases here and there, and you cannot do away with them in life. Not even in politics.

“And when they are in the majority, you have to look at yourself as a party and the honest truth is that we made fundamental errors and it created a fertile ground for that betrayal.

“I am not defending it because it ought not to have happened. And people would have been more patient. But not everybody can be patient.”.

On the argument by some prominent Northern party chieftains that PDP would have won the 2015 election if the party had fielded a popular candidate from the North instead of Jonathan, Makarfi agreed that the race would have been easier for the party.

“Yes, the result would have been different,” he said. “But even then, Jonathan as the candidate if the party had listened a lot more and rejigged its campaign, its language and the message.

“True or false, the votes difference was about two million. It would have been different even with Jonathan as a candidate. It is not just of him as a candidate, but communicating better and dealing with the right people could have made the situation different.

“But that is history. So we should learn from the mistakes we have made. So you cannot entirely say because Jonathan was a candidate.

“Of course, it would have been much more easier. But even with him as candidate, the characters fronting for PDP were not characters that could have won election for the party.”

On the future of the PDP, in view of the party’s protracted leadership crisis, Makarfi said his group was waiting for the commencement of its appeal against the court backed National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff.

According to him, since Sheriff had spurned the reconciliation moves initiated by Jonathan and others, there is no other option than to allow the Supreme Court to decide his fate.

Makarfi and his group have approached the apex court, seeking to nullify Sheriff’s stranglehold on the party. The Supreme Court is expected to commence hearing in the case on May 4.

Asked what would be the fate of the PDP should his faction lose the case to Sheriff at the apex court, Makarfi said that would spell the death knell for the crisis-ridden opposition party.

Said he: “If it happens that way, then PDP would die. But those who would be working to kill PDP that way, I assure them they would end up being confronted with a bigger political force than the PDP itself.

“Because politics is about people, there is no way, let me speak here for the North that I know so well, there is no way in the North with Sheriff at the helm of affairs of PDP that voters would on their own go and vote PDP. There is no way.

“We have just seen it in a recent election in Delta State that they have turned their back against PDP because of Sheriff. And it may be so in many states of the southern part of this country.

“These people are alive, they are politicians, they are active. Water will surely find its level.

“And consistently, we have been saying that we are not going to be caught unawares. We are not going to be caught without options.

“We cannot boast of what the Supreme Court judgment would be but we are hopeful that they would do what is right. And in our opinion, what is right is upholding the Convention.

“But should what we think is right not right before the Supreme Court, so be it. We will decide our political direction in good time. And that political direction, I assure you, would be one that would be more potent than the PDP as it is.”

Makarfi is PDP leader, says Ekiti PDP faction

The Ekiti State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction loyal to Governor Ayo Fayose has warned the senator from Ogun East District, Prince Buruji Kashamu and the National Chairman, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff, to stop meddling in the affairs of the chapter.

Rising from a meeting of stakeholders in Ikole Local Government Area, the faction, led by   Gboyega Oguntuase, passed a vote of confidence on Fayose and applauded his contributions to the growth of the party.

The faction  also passed a vote of confidence on the Chairman of the PDP National Caretaker Committee, Alhaji Ahmed Makarfi, and Oguntuase.

The faction described Kashamu and Sheriff as “fifth columnists and saboteurs” bent on destroying the party for their selfish gains.”

It described party members loyal to the duo as “outcasts who are interested in wrecking the party.”

    Makarfi rejects Osinbajo panel

The Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the probe panel set up by President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate the suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), David Babachir Lawal and National Intelligence Agency (NIA) Director-General, Abiodun Oke.

Instead, the PDP factional leader called for an independent commission of inquiry to investigate the officials.

Lawal and Oke were on Wednesday suspended from office by President Buhari following the former’s involvement in alleged contract scam and the latter’s claim to ownership by the NIA of hidden cash discovered in a Lagos private apartment.

The President has set up a three-man panel headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to probe the two public officials. The National Security Adviser, Gen. Babagana Mongunu and the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami are members of the panel.

Lawal will be answering questions on a N230 million grass-cutting contract he awarded to Rholavision Engineering Limited, a company in which he has interest. Oke will be grilled on his claim to the ownership of cash totaling about N13 billion in local and foreign currencies discovered in a private apartment in Ikoyi, Lagos.

But in a statement by the spokesman of the Caretaker Committee, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, Makarfi described the Osinbajo panel as “another ruse” to deceive Nigerians and dress up the “flailed” anti-corruption war in a new garb.

Makarfi’s argument is hinged on the fact that the Presidency had earlier dismissed a Senate ad hoc committee’s report that indicted Lawal and which had called for his removal and prosecution.

A report of investigation on Lawal, submitted by Malami had cleared the suspended SGF of wrongdoing in the contract scam, thereby rubbishing the Senator Shehu Sani report that indicted the suspended Federal Government scribe.

The statement reads: “Let Nigerians recall that the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria did set-up an ad-hoc Committee in 2016 headed by Senator Shehu Sani, a Senator representing Kaduna Central, to investigate the expenditures and activities of the Presidential Initiative for North East (PINE), which Engr. Babachir in his capacity as the SGF was overseeing.”

The Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the probe panel set up by President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate the suspended duo of Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Babachir David Lawal and the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Dr. Ayodele Oke.

Instead, the PDP faction has called for an independent commission of inquiry to investigate the suspended officials.

Lawal and Oke were on Wednesday suspended from office by President Buhari following the former’s involvement in alleged contract scam and the latter’s claim to ownership of hidden cash discovered in a private apartment in Lagos.

Following their suspension, the President set up a three-man panel headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to probe the two public officials.

But in a statement on Thursday by the spokesman of the Caretaker Committee, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, Makarfi described the Osinbajo panel as “another ruse” to deceive Nigerians and dress up the “flailed” anti-corruption war in a new garb.

Makarfi’s argument is hinged on the fact that the Presidency had earlier dismissed a Senate ad hoc committee’s report that indicted Lawal and which had called for his removal and prosecution.

A report of investigation on Lawal, submitted by Malami had cleared the suspended SGF of wrongdoing in the contract scam, thereby rubbishing the Senator Shehu Sani report that indicted the SGF.

The statement said, “Let Nigerians recall that the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria did set-up an ad-hoc Committee in 2016 headed by Senator Shehu Sani, a Senator representing Kaduna Central, to investigate the expenditures and activities of the Presidential Initiative for North East (PINE), which Engr. Babachir in his capacity as the SGF was overseeing.

“The Committee also investigated the alarming rate of humanitarian crisis in the North-East occasioned by the diversion of grains from the Strategic Grains Reserve and other food supplies meant for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in that region.

“Consequently, the Senate ad-hoc Committee indicted the SGF, Engr. Lawal for the mismanagement of PINE funds and the award of multi-million Naira grass cutting contract to one of his companies, Rholavision Engineering Limited and other ghost companies.”

Expressing reservations about the inclusion of the AGF in the new probe panel, the party pointed out that it is an anomaly to include the same Malami that cleared Lawal in the Osinbajo panel.

‘Fayose, others supporting Makarfi are lawless’

The National Vice Chairman (Southwest) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Makanjuola Ogundipe, has described Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose and other chieftains supporting the National Caretaker Committee as lawless people. He said nobody in the party, no matter how highly placed, can hold the hand of justice for impunity to thrive.

Ogundipe, who spoke in Ado Ekiti, said Fayose and other chieftains supporting Makarfi are “lawless individuals whose stock in trade is impunity.”

Reacting to the factional Southwest zonal meeting presided over by Dr. Eddy Olafeso at Ado Ekiti Government House, Ogundipe maintained that Senator Ali Modu Sheriff is the National Chairman affirmed by the law court.

He said those belonging to the Makarfi faction only wanted to hijack the PDP for their selfish ambition, but had their hopes dashed by the Court of Appeal which recognized Sheriff and his National Working Committee (NWC).

The former Ekiti PDP Chairman said party leaders and people of the Southwest recognise Sheriff “and will always give him support.”

He added: “The law-abiding people in the Southwest recognize Sheriff as the PDP National Chairman and so will always give him support. Sheriff is preaching peace and moving the party forwarding the face of all adversities.

“As the National Chairman, he has not stopped at repositioning the party. He is busy reconciling party members to ensure that peace reigns and calm frayed nerves and those who are still aggrieved about what happened in the recent past.

“Those who are afraid of Sheriff in the Southwest PDP are probably those who think their selfish manipulations will not be possible under Sheriff as the National Chairman are entitled to their fears.

“These people, should not because of their reasons, derail the political fortunes of many as we move to elections in Ekiti and Osun States.

“The PDP has waited enough for the outcome of the Appeal Court judgment; it is only logical and politically sensible to allow peace and progress within the party through available justice.”

On Fayose’s tirades against Sheriff, Ogundipe said: “Peace will only come when there is justice and nobody no matter how highly placed can hold the hand of justice for impunity to thrive.

“Fayose is the biggest political chameleon ever recorded n the political history of Nigeria. Fayose is not bigger than the law. he is not bigger than the party. The law has pronounced Sheriff as chairman and Fayose must recognise him as such.”

  • Sheriff, Makarfi greet Christians

    Sheriff, Makarfi greet Christians

The court- backed National chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Ali Modu- Sheriff has urged Christians to imbibe the lessons of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
In a statement by his deputy, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh in Abuja yesterday, Sheriff urged Christians and Nigerians to remain positive about the nation.
He stressed every challenge, including even death, can be overcome through abiding faith in God and dogged determination.
He said the lessons learnt from Easter should serve as a springboard for every Nigerian to rise above the challenges that the country is being confronted with.
“As we remember the cruxifion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we should draw a lesson from his resurrection and rise above the challenges we currently face as a country. “Even in recession, we believe as a party that there are opportunities that we believe the ever resilient Nigerian people can explore and exploit to better their lot.”
On his part, chairman of the caretaker committee of the party Senator Ahmed Makarfi, called on Christians to emulate the virtues of Jesus Christ that teaches sacrifice.
He urged Christians to always seek peace in  commemoration of the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
“Just as He paid the ultimate sacrifice for our sake, we urge Nigerians especially, Christian faithful to make sacrifices for the good of others thereby emulating the virtues of Jesus sacrifice.
“In addition, we urge all Christians in Nigeria to use the Easter celebrations to reflect and pray for Nigeria’s continuous unity and peaceful coexistence,” Makarfi said in a statement signed by the committee’s spokesman , Prince Dayo Adeyeye.

  • Nigeria now a gestapo state under APC, says Makarfi

Nigeria now a gestapo state under APC, says Makarfi

The Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government of running a Gestapo state.

According to the faction, the country is fast drifting into a dictatorship and possible anarchy under the present administration.

A statement yesterday by the spokesman of the Makarfi camp, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, complained that prominent individuals that held public office in the last administration are being arrested and detained indefinitely without trial.

“For instance, the former Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam was arrested by men of the Directorate of State Services (DSS) and has been in detention for over two months now without trial.

“Also, the former Niger State Governor Dr. Babangida Aliyu was arrested on April 5, 2017 by officers of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) and like the others, he has been in detention and yet no case has been filed against him in any court by the anti-graft agency.

“Former National Security Adviser (NSA) Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd) has been in custody for about two years now without trial. Similar brutality, arrest and mindless detention went on with other PDP leaders and members that were arrested by either the DSS or the EFCC,” the statement said.

The opposition lamented what it described as media trial and conviction of opposition elements before they are proven innocent or otherwise by the courts.

The statement added: “It is also very clear in the Constitution of Nigeria that no security agency has the right or power to detain suspects more than 48 hours without trial.

“Ironically, while former leaders and members of the PDP are being arrested indiscriminately and detained without trial, other former office holders of the ruling APC, who have been accused of various corrupt practices are yet to be arrested. Instead, they are compensated with juicy ministerial appointments. Double standards.

“We are in a constitutional democracy and as such, the present APC administration must lead by example and obey court orders. It is on record that most of these suspects have been granted bail by the courts of the land and the ECOWAS Court in the case of Col. Sambo Dasuki .This is sheer lawlessness!

“We wish to further assure the public that the PDP is not against the anti-corruption fight. Our stand is that the present APC government must follow due process in dealing with issues of corruption as the PDP did during its governments without violating human rights of citizens, especially those suspects that may later be found innocent by the law court.”

•Urges party members to shun party chairs functions

The Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that governors elected on the platform of the party are not thieves.
Makarfi was responding to a statement by the camp of the party’s national chairman, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff saying that the party would not accept “stolen money” from the governors to run the party.
The statement, which was made by Sheriff’s deputy, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh was targeted at Governors Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State.
In a statement yesterday by the spokesman of the Caretaker Committee, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, the faction accused Ojougboh of being an impostor, saying he was illegally parading himself as Deputy National Chairman.
The statement said, “For the umpteenth time, we want to re-iterate that Mr. Ojugboh, the former National Vice Chairman of PDP has no locus to speak in the capacity of Deputy National Chairman of the PDP.
“He is an interloper and an impostor; and as such, any action or statement made by Cairo Ojugboh and other self-appointed members of the Sheriff renegade group is illegal, null and void and should be disregarded by all loyal supporters and members of the PDP.
“Let these irritants take note that Governors Fayose and Wike, and indeed all governors elected on the platform of our great party, the PDP are men of integrity.
“Our governors are responsible and trusted party men that are working tirelessly in their various states to deliver the needed dividends of democracy.
“The people of Rivers State and Ekiti State can testify to the wonderful achievements of our governors in their states and other states governed by the PDP”.
The faction urged party members nationwide to shun the campaign or mobilisation programme being planned by the Sheriff group in some states in the Southeast.
“We wish to further state without any ambiguity that these actions are illegal, null and void. Faithful party men and women in the South East and any other zones in Nigeria should disregard such meetings or gathering”, the faction added.
Stating that Sheriff’s position as chairman is being challenged at the Supreme Court, Adeyeye said the Caretaker Committee remained in charge of the party’s affairs.
“The National Caretaker Committee led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi has appealed the judgment of the February 17, 2017 at the Supreme Court and in the eyes of the law, until the appeal is set aside by the Supreme Court, the National Caretaker Committee remains in charge of the affairs of the PDP.
“So, Senator Sheriff and his co travelers have no power to call for any meeting of party members or supervise the affairs of the PDP forthwith.
“We therefore want to further call on Senator Ali Modu Sheriff to stop parading himself as the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“We further call on all security agencies and other agencies of government to stop according him or members of his illegal team any support or assistance.
“Finally, we urge all our members and teeming supporters nationwide to stop attending any meeting organised by Senator Ali Modu Sheriff or any member of his team.
“They are illegal and have no place to function as such. Senator Ahmed Makarfi led National Caretaker Committee remains the only authentic National Exco of the PDP in line with the decision of the May 21st and August 17, 2016 National Conventions of our great party”, the statement added.

  • Lagos PDP faction backs Makarfi

A faction of the Lagos State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed its support for the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee.
The members of the faction at its meeting held in Lagos adopted a motion affirming the leadership of Makarfi as the leader.
The factional chairman, Hon. Moshood Salvador, said that the leader of the party, Chief Bode George, and other leaders were behind Senator Markarfi.
He said: “The entire party structures in the state, including our leader, Chief Bode George, are solidly behind Ahmed Makarfi, who was appointed as caretaker chairman of the party in Port Harcourt last year.”
Salvador commended the National Assembly for accepting E-voting in the new amendment of the Electoral Act.
He said new amendment would restrict the state electoral commission from conducting local government elections without providing a level playing ground.
He added: “The new electoral amendment is cheering news to those of you who are aspiring to contest the forth coming local government election and the 2019 general elections in the country.”
The chairman said though the party suffered a setback in Ibeju-Lekki local government area, the differences have been resolved.
The publicity secretary, Taofik Gani, said the party was already initiating the process of declaring vacant the seats of six of its members who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
He said:  ”We are doing our homework and we are going to make our formal application to the necessary authorities for their seats to be declared vacant. We want them to come and test their popularity in their various constituencies.
“If truly they are popular they should vacate their and not even contest their seats that will be declared vacant in court but come out to come and test their popularity in an election.”
He added: “We affirmed our unalloyed support for the Makarfi-led caretaker committee and that in Lagos State we are one. There is no faction in Lagos State and we are all working as one as the local government election is coming up.”

  • PDP crisis: Sheriff, Makarfi bicker over attempts to sack secretariat workers

PDP crisis: Sheriff, Makarfi bicker over attempts to sack secretariat workers

The Ali Modu Sheriff and Ahmed Makarfi factions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are locked in a fresh face-off, this time over the planned recruitment of staff for the party by the Sheriff faction.

The Makari camp is resisting the planned recruitment.

All the staff at the PDP national secretariat are refusing to work with Sheriff.

They have rebuffed all overtures from the faction to return to work, preferring to work for the Makarfi camp.

Consequently, the Sheriff faction recently invited applications from interested Nigerians to come and fill vacant administrative positions at the party’s national secretariat.

Makarfi has protested that the move negates the agreement brokered between the two camps on Thursday by Governor Seriake Dickson.

However, in a telephone chat with our correspondent yesterday, Sheriff’s deputy, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh said the said recruitment exercise has nothing to do with the peace deal.

He said: “The people employed at the secretariat staff have since left the party.

“We did not sack them. Rather they, on their own, went on AWOL (Absence Without Official Leave).

“We have asked them to resume duties but they have refused. They said they are waiting for the judgment of the Supreme Court but we cannot continue to wait for them.

“They have become a clog in the wheel of progress of the party.

“We are going ahead to replace them. Makarfi should respect himself and stay out of this because it has nothing to do with him.

“We are the ones running the party and they are supposed to be there as employees of the party. The recruitment exercise does not in any way affect the peace deal brokered by Governor Dickson.”

But in a swift reaction, the spokesman for the Caretaker Committee, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, who also spoke with our correspondent on telephone, said the move constituted a breach of the peace agreement.

According to him, the staff have been working with the Caretaker Committee and will continue to do so until the Supreme Court makes a final pronouncement on the leadership of the party.

He warned Sheriff against heightening tension in the party, adding that one of the major planks of the political solution to the crisis was to maintain the status quo in respect of the secretariat staff.

Adeyeye said, “The staff are working with us in line with the deal brokered by Governor Dickson and nobody can replace them.

“We are all waiting for the outcome of the Supreme Court on the matter because they were working with us before the February 17 judgement of the Appeal Court.

“Why should they go and work with Sheriff while the case is still pending before the Supreme Court? If you are looking for political solution, then you should not heighten tension.

“The right thing to do while looking for political solution is to maintain the status quo. You don’t go out heightening tension when you are seeking political solution.

“Sheriff and his group must keep to the terms of the agreement for peace to reign because we are going to resist any attempt to victimise the workers”.

Adeyeye had, in a statement on Friday, that there is no accord in place between the Makarfi faction and the Sheriff camp.

He said the only area of agreement is that the two sides will withhold fire in the media for now.

He said reports that they have reached a ‘political solution’ is not true, stressing that they only agreed before the Governor Dickson’s reconciliation committee  to “stop further media attacks on officers, elders and other stakeholders of the PDP across the internal political divide.”

He added: “For the record, the agreement was not a political solution but rather an understanding reached urging representatives of ‘the key actors’ from both groups not to dissipate energy amongst themselves but to focus on how to unite as a formidable force capable of re-gaining power from the failed All Progressive Congress (APC)-led government in the 2019.

“The agreement also implores both parties to desist from making public derogatory remarks against each other that could cause inflammatory reactions capable of dragging the party to the mud.”

Adeyeye added that the national caretaker committee and all the organs of the party are working with the reconciliation committee to reach a lasting political solution.
