    Makinde: robust economy coming

Oyo State Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate Seyi Makinde has said he will create a robust economy in the state, if voted into office.

The SDP candidate identified non-patronage of local contractors and irregular payment of workers salaries as factors contributing  to the poverty afflicting the people.

Makinde said: “It is when those people affected get their money and patronise local markets that money can circulate.

“But, unfortunately, what we have in the state today is contrary. Contractors are not based in Oyo State and they take our money to Lagos State where they are based. Workers are not regularly paid and they lack purchasing power to go to the markets, hence the low sales being recorded by our market men and women.”

The SDP candidate spoke in Ibadan at the weekend during his market campaign led by the party state chairman, Sunday Adelaja and which took the team to Orita-Merin, Agbeni and Ogunpa markets.

Makinde, who alighted from his vehicle at Orita-Merin Market square and trekked to Agbeni Market, stopping along the way to greet the people.

He said the SDP administration under his leadership would ensure that the state-based contractors would be engaged to halt capital flight and that workers’ salaries would be paid on time.

The Babaloja of Orita-Merin, Rasheed Oloola, praised the governorship candidate for his vision and focus, recalling that his good works had preceded him and would go a long way in bringing him victory.

Makinde spoke yesterday at the inauguration of his campaign organisation headed by the former Speaker of the House of Assembly, Kehinde Ayoola, at the K.S. Motel, Total Garden, Ibadan.

He urged members of the campaign organisation to work to actualise his ambition to liberate the masses.

Makinde insisted that his candidacy was not to test the waters but to win which “is why we have no sleeping moment between now and the day of election”.

The SDP candidate said unless the current economic drift “is halted, the future is secured, not only for the masses, but also for those thinking they are in the comfort zone”.

“As I said recently, the youth will discount the system because of poverty and the implication is that they will engage in status changing act, which does not augur well for the society.

“When the youth are faced with this kind of ugly situation, they are bound to lose hope in the future and resort to violence and crime which is why we should ‘arrest’ the situation and save our future,” he said

  • Imbibe Christmas virtues, Makinde tells Nigerians

A call has gone to Christians to dwell more on the spiritual significance of Christmas, rather than the festivities associated with it.

Oyo State Social Democratic Party’s (SDP’s) governorship candidate Seyi Makinde, in a statement in Ibadan yesterday, remarked that the reason for the season is uncommon love of God for mankind, which culminated in sending to the world His only begotten son, and how to reciprocate this among the fellow beings.

According to him, “as we dwell on the agape love of God for us through the birth of Jesus Christ, which we are celebrating, we should reflect also on the humble circumstances of that birth (of Christ) and pattern our lives in a way that we shall be worthy of our call as Christians.”

  • Let’s resurrect dead things in Nigeria, says Makinde

The Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, Dr Sunday Ola Makinde, has called for the resurrection of the dying peace and love in Nigeria.

The cleric said an egalitarian society must be built in Nigeria to ensure that dead things are resuscitated.

“Let us join our hands together, irrespective of our tribes, to build a new nation. Whatever is falling, let Nigerians try as much as possible to resurrect it. The security is dead, we should resurrect it. Employment generation is dead, we should resurrect it. Peace is dead, we should resurrect it. Love is dead, we should resurrect it and then build an egalitarian society,” he said.

The Prelate spoke yesterday in Lagos at the dedication and official opening of the Sunday School building of the Hoare’s Memorial Methodist Cathedral, Yaba, Lagos.

Dr Makinde noted that the power sector needs a spiritual intervention because power generation has been declining.

“We are looking for a saviour in the power sector. It transcends the knowledge of humans. We should go spiritual. It is a problem and it is a disgrace to this nation. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo could not do it; the military could not do it. Then let’s go spiritual, and it shall be well,” he said.

On the importance of the Sunday School building, Dr Makinde said it would prevent crimes in the society as it would serve as a training ground for youths.

He added: “The importance of the Sunday School building is that we are bringing in the young ones, to catch them young, so that we can have few evils in the society. The crimes being committed today are committed by the young ones. But if we catch them young, the crimes will not be there. That is why we have built this to train young Nigerians.”

  • Makinde: Alaafin a living encyclopedia

    Makinde: Alaafin a living encyclopedia

The Prelate of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, Dr. Sunday Ola Makinde, has described the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, as a “living encyclopedia, whose doctrines and philosophies remain a rallying point”.

Rev. Makinde spoke yesterday at the Alaafin’s palace when he led four bishops on a visit to the monarch.

The bishops are the President of the Methodist Conference of Nigeria, Rev. Jimmy Coker from Abia State; Rev. Charles Kehinde from Ilesha Diocese; Methodist Conference Secretary Rev. Chibuzor Opoko and Rev. Kehinde Stephen, Arch Bishop of Ibadan Diocese.

Rev. Makinde said: “You (Alaafin) are a great philosopher and staunch advocate of justice, fairness and truth. Your Imperial Majesty is never afraid to talk to anyone, even those in positions of authority. You are blunt and thorough in advising and calling to order the excesses of those in authority whenever they want to go astray. Your knowledge cuts across all shades of discipline. Your contributions to peace, progress and development is indeed unrivalled.”

The prelate hailed Oba Adeyemi for accommodating all religions, adding that the Methodist Church would remain grateful to him for his contributions towards its growth in Oyo town.

He said: “What is more amazing about the Alaafin is his dexterity and prowess of Yoruba language. Whenever he speaks, you will be carried away by his intonation. You will know that he is an embodiment of Yoruba culture and tradition. I urge the government not to allow Yoruba language to go into extinction. It must be adequately promoted and allowed to be spoken in schools.”

Alaafin thanked the prelate and his entourage for the visit and extolled Makinde’s virtues.

He said: “He is a Minister of God with a vision and mission. He is assertive and committed to human advancement. He is an example of justice and truthfulness.”

Reiterating his commitment to the service of humanity, the monarch said as the custodian of Yoruba culture and tradition, he is not opposed to any religion, but owes it as a duty to preserve the deities.

He said: “It is important to preserve our cultural heritage in order not to lose our identity. These artefacts, sculptures and antiquities were seen as the main obstacles to the spread of the white man’s religion and as a result, various unsuitable terminological descriptions were employed to devalue them.

“They were erroneously described as graven images, idols, fetish or devilish objects. They were regarded as mere woods that had no spiritual or aesthetic value.”
