  • Buhari arrives Makurdi for campaign rally

    President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday arrived Makurdi airport for his presidential campaign rally in Benue State.

    The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the presidential jet conveying the President and his entourage touched down at the Makurdi airport at about 10.45a.m.

    The president is accompanied on the trip by top party officials and a host of governors.

    Buhari is expected to pay a courtesy call on the Tor Tiv, Prof. James Ayatse, and meet with Gov. Samuel Ortom at the Government House before proceeding to the Aper Aku Stadium for the rally.

    Meanwhile, security around the campaign venue is tight as All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters troop to the stadium to await the president.

  • I’ve no personal grudges against Buhari, says Ortom

    *Says Mr. President is beyond party issues

     

    Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom on Wednesday said that he has no personal grudges against President Muhammadu Buhari.

    Ortom, who has defected to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), was at the Nigerian Air Force base, Makurdi to receive President Buhari, whose plane landed at the base around 10.37 am.

    According to him, Mr. President is beyond parties as he has made adequate security arrangement for his visit to Benue state.

    Speaking with journalists shortly before the President’s plane landed, Ortom said “Mr President is beyond party, he is the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and whatever he is doing, it is our responsibility to give him adequate protocol.

    “He is our President, and he is beyond party and so I am doing all the needful.

    “There is no special thing in what I am doing, it is what I am supposed to do as governor of Benue State irrespective of party because he remains my President and I respect him.

    “I have no personal issues with him; we talk about policies and issues there is no personal grudge.

    “So, I am here to receive him, and I have made adequate arrangement. This State belongs to Mr President. So he has access, he can be here and do whatever he wants.” he stated.

  • Ortom swears-in six acting LG chairmen

    Gov. Samuel Ortom of Benue on Tuesday in Makurdi swore in Acting Chairmen for six local governments, following the suspension of the affected area’s chairmen by the State House of Assembly.

    The News Agency of Nigeria, reports that the local government bosses were suspended by the legislators on Monday, Jan. 21, on the request of Ortom.

    Ortom, in a letter transmitted to the legislators, had accused the local chairmen of “gross misconduct”. Their suspension is for an initial period of three months.

    In a brief speech at the ceremony, Ortom cautioned the acting chairmen against sharing government monies to “elders in their domains”.

    “The era of sharing government money to elders is now over; government money is meant to touch the lives of the people positively.

    “Be prudent in handling local government finances; do not embezzle the council’s funds, money is not everything, do not be in a hurry to grab it.

    “If you grab government money, you will get into trouble. The Bible says money is the root of all evil. Wait patiently for God’s appointed time for you to make genuine money and not ill-gotten wealth,” he warned.

    He also admonished Benue residents to eschew violence, especially during and after the forthcoming polls and urged the chairmen to ensure absolute peace in their respective areas.

    Responding on behalf of her colleagues, the acting chairman of Makurdi Local Government, Mrs. Lym Goon, appreciated Ortom for the appointments, and promised to do everything possible to make him proud.

    She also promised to work toward the success of the PDP in the forthcoming general elections.

  • Breaking: 15 houses burnt as Tiv, Jukun clash in Makurdi

    Several houses have been burnt in Abinsi town Benue State following a clash between Tiv and Jukun ethnic groups.

    The clash is coming less than 12 hours after Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom and his Taraba counterpart, Dairus Ishaku promoted peace through a book launch in Wukari, Taraba state.

    Abinsi town is located on the busy Makurdi – Gboko federal highway, near the bank of River Benue in Guma local government area.

    The clash, it was learnt, started around 6:30pm. But there was no confirmation of death or casualties as at the time of filing this report.

    An eyewitness Peter Uke told The Nation about 15 houses belonging to Tiv and Jukuns have been razed down.

    Uke said the violence started among suspected cults groups but later turned to an ethnic clash between Jukun and Tiv people.

    Ortom and Ishaku on Wednesday launch a book at Federal University of Wukari, in Taraba state to promote peace between Tiv and Jukun.

    But the latest clash has fuelled suspicions the two ethnic nationalities might not be ready for peaceful co-existence.

    There was traffic gridlock on the busy Makurdi – Federal Highway as passengers traveling along put up for police arrival.

    Our correspondent gathered the new Commissioner of Police Omololu Bishi, who is barely two weeks in the state, has been mobilising his men to bring the situation under control.

  • Man kills ex-wife’s lover in Makurdi

    The Benue Police Command on Friday arraigned one Abunde Goja, 32, who allegedly killed his ex-wife’s lover.

    Goja was charged with conspiracy, culpable homicide and membership of unlawful society before a Makurdi Upper Area Court.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Veronica Shaagee said that Goja attacked and killed Mr Terdoo Shitov of Judges Quarters, Makurdi,

    She said that the murder occurred in the ex-wife’s father’s house.

    Shaagee said that Goja, a resident of Achusa, Makurdi, conspired with several others and attached Shitov with machete and acid.

    She told the court that the case was transferred from B Division Police Station, Makurdi, to the state Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department on Jan. 7.

    “While she (Goja’s ex-wife) was in her room with her boyfriend, Terdoo Shitov, in her father’s house, her ex-husband, Bunde Goja, conspired with his cult members now at large and attacked and ‘macheted’ Terdoo Shitov to death and also poured acid on his head.”

    The prosecutor said that the accused was arrested during police investigation and that he confessed to committing the crime.

    She said that a machete stained with blood, a plank, an axe, an acid rubber container and a blood-stained cloth were recovered from the scene of the crime.

    Shaagee said that investigation into the matter was still ongoing, and requested for an adjournment to enable the police to complete it.

    She said the offences contravened Section 97, 222 of the Penal Code, Law of Benue, 2004, and Section 11(2) of the Abduction, Hostage- Taking, Kidnapping, Secret Cult and Similar Activities Prohibition Law, 2017.

    The court did not take the plea of the accused due to want of jurisdiction.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Fatima Akintomide, ordered that Goja should be kept at the Federal Medium Prison, Makurdi, and adjourned the case to Feb. 15, for further mention.

  • Hoodlums attack APC deputy governorship candidate’s home in Makurdi

    Barely 24 hours after he was officially pronounced the running mate to the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Emmanuel Jime, hoodlums yesterday raided the home of Sam Ode in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

    Almost two months after Jime became APC governorship candidate, efforts to choose a running mate for him were deadlocked.

    It took intervention of the party’s stakeholders in Benue South and its State Leader, Senator George Akume, to settle for Ode, a former Minister of State for Niger Delta.

    But after his name was made public, hoodlums brandishing knives, axes, cutlasses and clubs suspected to be cultists stormed his HUDCO Quarters in Makurdi at 4 a.m yesterday.

    Confirming the incident on phone to The Nation, Ode said he was not at home when the hoodlums stormed his house.

    “My security guards told me that some men armed with knives, axe, clubs and other weapons forced their way into my house and asked after me, even though I was not at home. I suspect they were after my life,” he said.

    The former minister said the matter was reported to security agencies.

    Ode, who is also a former Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area, was also the Special Adviser to the Governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs before former President Goodluck Jonathan appointed him Minister of State for Niger Delta.

    He contested the 2015 governorship primary and lost.

    He was a participant of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Plateau State.

    Police spokesman Moses Yamu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), could not be reached last night as his phone was switched off.

     

  • Police arraign man for armed robbery in Makurdi

    The Police in Benue on Tuesday arraigned a 26-year-old man, Ifeanyi Okoro, in a Makurdi Upper Area Court for alleged armed robbery.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Veronica Shaagee, had told the court that the case was transferred from ‘A’ Division to Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (CIID) on Oct. 25.

    Shaagee said that Peter Dondo of Opposite Iorzua Ayatse St., Logo 1, Makurdi, reported the case to `A’ Division Police Station on Oct 24.

    She said that Dondo, a motorcyclist, was robbed of his motorcycle at gunpoint by two passengers behind Benue Hotel, Makurdi.

    “He conveyed two passengers to Behind Benue Hotel, Makurdi and on reaching the point where they wanted to drop, one of the passengers removed a gun and pointed at him to hand over his motorcycle to them.

    “They robbed him at gunpoint of his Honda Motorcycle with registration number BKB255UF valued N240,000, ’’ she said.

    The prosecutor, who said that investigation was ongoing prayed for additional time to enable the police complete it.

    Shaagee said the offence contravened Section 6(B) and 1 (1)(2)(a)(b) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act 2004.

    However, when the case came up for mention, no plea was taken.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Rose Iyorshee, remanded the accused at Federal Prisons, Makurdi and adjourned the case till Jan.8, 2019, for further mention.

  • Wife kills self, hubby, three kids in Makurdi

    WHY will a woman kill her husband, their three children and herself? These are the questions the police in Benue State are trying to proffer answers to after Mrs. Rochelle Adetsav unexpectedly ended her husband’s life, their children’s and her own.

    “The man, Mr. Nicholas Adetsav, a staff of Makurdi Local Government Council, and his children, were killed on Friday night in Makurdi. His wife, who we believe is responsible for the death of the quartet, also killed herself,” spokesman for the state police command, Moses Yamu said.

    “From information available to us, the woman had been having issues with her husband which might have culminated into this,” Yamu said.

    The children’s names were given as Nguavese (F) (6), Evelyn (F) (4) and Joshua (M) (2).

    The couple, who lived on Vandeikya Street, were both staff of Makurdi Local Government Council.

    “They had been having issues. Just yesterday (Friday), the woman was seen with a pestle trying to smash her husband’s car. No one knows the cause of their frequent fights,” he said.

    He said that Police personnel sent to the house found the man foaming in the mouth, the three kids already dead, while the woman, also dead, was found holding a knife in her hands.

    “The incident happened around 8:30 p.m. on Friday.

    “From what we have gathered, the couple fought on a daily basis,” he told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

    Yamu said that investigation had begun to determine the reasons for the actions, while the corpses have been deposited at the St. Theresa’s Catholic Hospital, Makurdi.

    A neighbour of the late couple, James Omale, told The Nation that about 8:30pm, the woman smashed the windscreen of her husband’s  car with a pestle.

    “After that, she rushed back into the house where she hit her husband Adetsav with the pestle at the back of the neck and thereafter slaughtered her three children and stabbed herself to death,” he said.

    Omale said neighbours called the DPO of B. Division who responded quickly with his men forcing the door of the couple’s apartment open only do find the five of them in a pool of blood dead.

    The Police spokesman Moses Yamu also said that the Police found the man foaming in the mouth, the three kids already dead, while the woman, also dead, was found holding a knife in her hands.

    The Chairman, Makurdi Local Government Council, Mrs. Akange Audu, confirmed that the couple were employees of the local government council.

    “The husband worked in the Department of Finance while his wife worked with the Department of Agriculture,” she said.

    She also confirmed that the couple “were always fighting”, adding that the woman had warned neighbours to stay off their fights.

    One of the neighbours says she stopped intervening on their quarrels when Mrs. Adetsav threatened her with a knife during one of such interventions.

    A cross section of the neighbours, who spoke to NAN, said that the couple had been having issues.

    They said that the couple had been fighting since Friday afternoon, but no one appeared sure of the cause of their fights.

    One of the neighbours told NAN that she stopped intervening on their quarrels when Mrs. Adetsav threatened her with a knife during one of such interventions.

  • University Professor commits suicide in Makurdi

    Professor Frank Onyezili, a senior lecturer with the Biological Sciences Department of the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, has committed suicide.

    Sources close to the professor told the News Agency of Nigeria, on Wednesday in Makurdi that the deceased was found dead on Tuesday, October 23.

    Mrs. Roseline Waku, the Director of Protocol and Information of the university, who confirmed the incident, however told our reporter that she was not aware of why Onyezili killed himself.

    “The only thing I can confirm is that the professor killed himself; I don’t know why he did it,” she said.

    Waku hinted of reports that the deceased left a suicide note, but said that she was not privy to its contents.

    A top official of the university told NAN that the the professor drank some substance suspected to be poison, after leaving a suicide note.

    The source, which craved anonymity, said that the university don’s action might not be unconnected with depression and loneliness that had been his lot since his wife and children relocated to a foreign country.

    “I am not sure why he killed himself, but he was always complaining of loneliness; his wife and children live abroad and have not been in touch with him. He might have opted to end his frustration by killing himself,” the source said.

    Contacted, Mr Moses Yamu, spokesman of the Police Command in Benue, told NAN that he had not been briefed on the matter.

    “I am yet to get details of the incident. That is all I can say for now,” he said.

  • Troops kill three suspected Gana boys in Zaki Biam

    The Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), said its troops killed three suspected boys of militia leader, Terwase Akwaza aka Gana in Zaki Biam, Ukum Local Government Area of Benue.

    Force Commander, Major-Gen. Adeyemi Yekini, made the disclosure in Makurdi on Monday while addressing newsmen on the incident.

    Yekini said that the suspects were killed on Sunday night following a distress call received by the troops in Zaki Biam.

    He said that the suspects, who attacked parts of the town with the aim of robbing the people of their property, were killed by the Special Forces during exchange of gunshots.

    “Our troops in Zaki Biam got a distress call that part of the town was under attack by Gana boys who came to rob people of their property. So the troops responded immediately and during the exchange of gunshots, three of them were killed,” he said.

    The commander said that the troops also recovered two weapons and several ammunitions from them.

    The News Agency of Nigeria  reports that the commander had earlier confirmed the killing of wife of Gana, Mrs Elizabeth Akwaza and 12 of the gang members.
