  • Jigawa promotes 378 teachers

    No fewer than 378 primary and secondary schools teachers in Auyo Local Government Council of Jigawa have been promoted to their next grade levels by the Jigawa Government.

    The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Chairman in the council, Alhaji Magaji Namadi, disclosed this while presenting promotion letters to the teachers on Friday in Auyo.

    According to Namadi, the teachers must reciprocate the gesture by being hardworking and dedicated to duty.

    “Show appreciation to government by maintaining ethical standard and avoid acts that will undermine the learning abilities of your students,” he said.

    Namadi also appealed to the government to ensure that teachers promotions come as at when due.

    “One of the best ways of motivating a teacher is through promotion.

    “When a teacher is promoted as at when due, I assure you he will give his best and that will impart positively on his students,” the chairman said.

    Responding on behalf of the teachers, Malam Mohammed Garba, expressed gratitude to the state government for the promotion.

    He said that the teachers were ready to perform their duties effectively and would not betray the trust reposed in them.

    Garba commended the government for the payment of their salaries and other entitlements promptly.

    Kano to produce 2m seedlings for desert control

    Kano State Government has approved N12.4 million to the Ministry of Environment for the production of two million assorted seedlings as part of efforts to check desertification.

    The state Commissioner of Information, Malam Mohammed Garba made the disclosure while briefing newsmen in Kano on the outcome of the state Executive Council Meeting.

    He explained that the seedlings would be distributed free to farmers and other members of the general public.

    “The state executive council has on Jan. 31 approved the money to enable the Ministry of Environment produce two million seedlings for distribution to people free to enable them plant the seedlings to check desertification.”

    According to him, the council also approved the release of N185.4 million for the construction of access road in Tokarawa industrial area, and N8.6 million for the rehabilitation of Tukur Road in Kano metropolis.

    The commissioner added that N65.2 million was approved for the reconstruction of a collapsed bridge along Jalabi-Kuluwa-Gwanare road in Bunkure Local Government area of the state.

    “The state government has also provided the sum of N31.9 million to the Ministry of Works for the construction of culvert at Darmanawa behind Hassan Gwarzo College,” Garba said.

  • Flood kills 23, destroys 12 houses in Gombe-SEM

    The Gombe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) said 23 persons were killed and five others missing in Gombe flood disaster between June and July.

    Malam Mohammed Garba, Acting Head of Rescue and Rehabilitation of the agency made the disclosure to journalists in Gombe on Monday.

    He said six persons died at Dadinkowa in Yamaltu-Deba flood on June 6; 16 died on July 1 and July 25 in Gombe town.

    Garba said that 21 houses were also destroyed by the flood while 101 houses were home to floods in three communities in the state.

    He said that the flood also washed away a total of 119 farmlands at Jauro Baba, Jauro Mai and Jauro Saini communities at Kamo Ward in Kaltungo Local Government of the state

    Garba said other property affected included 450 bags of grains washed away in Dadin kowa Village and 11 bags of fertiliser in Kaltungo Local Government.

    The acting head of rescue and rehabilitation said unquantifiable food items, household wares and domestic animals were also affected across four communities during the flooding.

    Garba added that arrangements were in place by the state government to provide relief materials to the affected communities and households.

    He advised the communities to desist from building or dumping refuse on waterways or indulging in any other practices that might affect the free flow of water.

  • Bye-election: Kano state govt warns trouble makers

    The Kano State Government says it is committed to ensuring free, fair and peaceful election during the forthcoming State House of Assembly bye-election in Minjibir.

    This is contained in a statement signed by the state Commissioner of Information, Youths and Sports, Malam Mohammed Garba, and made available to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Tuesday.

    According to Garba, the state government would collaborate with all security agencies in the state to ensure free, fair as well as peaceful elections in all the 158 polling units across the constituency.

    “This is in fulfillment of one of the cardinal objectives of any government of protecting lives and property of the citizenry,.

    “To ensure the exercise of their civic responsibility and fundamental right to freely choose their leaders as well as promote democratic principles in the state.

    The statement, therefore, urged the electorate in the constituency to turn out in large numbers to exercise their civic responsibility, be law-abiding and conduct themselves in an orderly and peaceful manner during the elections.

    “For the avoidance of doubt, government will not fold its arms to allow anybody or group of people to perpetrate violence and illegality at the expense of peace-loving and law-abiding citizens of the constituency and the state in general.

    “Government is not unaware of moves by some unpatriotic disgruntled elements to cause chaos during the elections for personal and selfish interests.

    “The prevailing peace in the state and sanctity of lives of the people at all times is non-negotiable and beyond the personal interest of anybody,” the statement added.
