Afrobeats singer and producer, Maleek Berry, has shared a fascinating account of his early days working with Davido.
Berry recalled how Davido, despite coming from a wealthy family, pretended to be poor while they collaborated in the studio.
In a recent appearance on the ’90s Baby podcast, Maleek Berry described how he met Davido through social media, introduced by one of Davido’s cousins.
He said at the time, Davido had only 4,000 YouTube views and was not yet known and he took Davido to record in a London studio, and they connected as two Nigerian music enthusiasts.
However, he said when he visited Davido’s father’s mansion, he was astonished by the opulence and wealth.

He realised that Davido’s family was “stinkingly rich” and that he had been humble about his background.
“I was there when Davido only had four thousand YouTube views. When he came to London, I would take him to studio in Bermondsey and record him.”
“It was one of his cousins that connected us via social media. He wasn’t even known then. We were just two Nigerian guys that loved music that got connected.
“He acted around us like one of those poor kids. But when I pulled up to his dad’s crib, I was surprised. There’s money and there’s money!
“I was just so taken aback because at the time, my mind didn’t used to move like he [Davido] had money. He used to blend in with us. When I saw the tower, I was like, okay, they’re rich.”
Maleek Berry also credited Davido with introducing him to Wizkid years later, highlighting the significance of their early collaboration and friendship.
