  • Man arraigned for alleged malicious damage

    A man, Olatoye Ayo, has been arraigned at an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court for alleged malicious damage and assault.

    Ayo, 26, was arraigned by the police on a two-count charge of malicious damage and assault before Magistrate Modupe Afenifero.

    Prosecuting Inspector Oriyomi Akinwale said the defendant committed the offence on January 20 about 10:30am in Basiri, Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that the defendant damaged Ankara cloth valued at N5,000 while fighting the complainant, Tope Ogunyemi.

    The court heard that the defendant assaulted the complainant by biting his finger.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

    Counsel to the defendant, Mr. Olatunde Olayemi, urged the court to grant his client bail, promising that he would not jump bail.

    Magistrate Afeniforo granted him N50,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    The case was adjourned till February 8.

  • Edo PDP chief docked for ‘malicious damage’

    A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, Elder Tes Sorae, has been arraigned before an Ekiadolor Chief Magistrates’ Court for “maliciously damaging property” estimated at over N2 million.

    Sorae, 78, popularly called Tomeline, was in the court to testify in another matter, not knowing that policemen lurked around the court premises for him.

    The accused was said to have, on February 20 at Otofure Village in Ovia North East Local Government Area, wilfully and maliciously damaged a poultry house, fence, borehole wire, cassava stems and other property belonging to one Billy Efionayi.

    The offence is punishable under sections 517 and 451 of the Criminal Code.

    He pleaded not guilty to the two-count charges preferred against him. Presiding Magistrate Esohe Bazuaye granted him bail for N100,000 and a surety in like sum.

    She adjourned hearing in the matter till September 17.

  • 16 in custody for malicious damage

    Two chiefs – Emmanuel Adeoye, 60 and Ezekiel Adetifa, 49 – as well as 14 youths of Iye-Ekiti community were arraigned yesterday at an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for alleged riot, malicious damage.

    Police prosecutor, Mr Samuel Osubu, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on October 16 at Iye-Ekiti.

    He listed the other defendants as: Akinwumi Odunayo, 46; Adeleye Damilare, 20; Ariyo Abiodun, 31 and others.

    Osubu said the defendants also conspired to kill Awolope Shola, Oluwafemi Olaoluwa and Alice Awolope.

    The prosecutor said the defendants promoted inter-communal war within Iye-Ekiti by breaching the peace.

    According to him, they committed the offences, punishable under Section 516 (A), 71, 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Cap C 16, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

    Osubu said he duplicated the case file and sent it to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge, while their counsel, led by Mr Sunday Alonge, prayed the court to grant them bail.

    The lawyer promised that they will not jump bail.

    The prosecutor opposed the bail application, saying the defendants caused chaos in the community.

    Chief Magistrate Adegboye Adesoji reserved ruling till tomorrow, and ordered the accused remanded in prison custody.

  • Man in court for disrupting church service, damaging N5m property

    A 49-year-old man, Abiodun Adeyinka, who allegedly damaged  property worth N5 million belonging to the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC), on Monday appeared before an Ebute-Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Adeyinka is facing a six-count charge bordering on malicious damage, conspiracy, unlawful assault and manner likely to cause breach of peace.

    The accused, however, pleaded innocence to the charge.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Cousin Adams, said that the accused committed the offences on Jan. 3, 2016, at noon, at No. 64, Adekunle Banjo St., Magodo, Lagos.

    He said that the accused forcibly entered into a Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) building located at the address during worship.

    Adams said the accused caused panic among the worshippers before damaging the church property.

    He said the damaged property were Jazz musical instrument, Konga drum, piano, five wireless microphones, six pieces of altar clothes, assorted church perfumes, wedding gowns and sacred pictures of Mary and Jesus.

    The prosecutor said that the accused also assaulted the presiding head of the church and tore her church garment.

    He said the offences contravened Sections 50, 126, 166, 170, 309 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Helen Omisore, admitted the accused to a bail of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Omisore said the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    She adjourned the case till April 10, for further hearing.

  • Two in court over ‘assault, malicious damage’

    Two men, Morufu Oyebola, 23, and Hammed Durojaiye, 25, yesterday appeared before a Tinubu Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for allegedly invading a market, assaulting traders and damaging valuables.

    Oyebola, who resides at 4, Anisi Street, Ijora-Badia and Durojaiye of 12, Bamgbose Street, Lagos Island, are facing a two-count charge of assault and malicious damage.

    The prosecutor, Inspector Ignatius Okeke, said the accused committed the offence at Ojuolopon Market Lagos Island, on June 30 at 12.12p.m.

    Okeke said Owolabi Shitta-Bay and Popoola Kamilu, who are traders, on the same date, reported to the police that the accused and 11 others at large invaded the market and disrupted trading.

    He alleged that the accused assaulted Shitta- Bay during the invasion.

    The prosecutor said the accused also damaged Popoola’s tricycle and stole some valuables at the market during the attack.

    Okeke said the offences contravened Sections 409 and 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Mr L.A. Owolabi granted the accused N50, 000 bail with two sureties each in the like sum. He adjourned the case till July 20 for mention.
