Mixed feelings  greet Dikko’s appointment as  NSC Chairman

    Ministry of Sports Development scrapped

The appointment of  Mallam Shehu Dikko  as the Chairman of  the National  Sports Commission  by President Bola Tinubu  has  been greeted  with mixed  reactions.

Dikko is  a  two-time  chairman of the League Management Company (LMC), a  body that  supervised  the  then Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) and second  vice-president of the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF).

With the development,  the Ministry of Sports  Development  seizes to exist.

Dikko ‘s  appointment as the new boss of the NSC was contained in a statement   by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

A part of the  statement on  Onanuga’s  X (formerly Twitter)  reads: “The National Sports Commission will assume the responsibilities of the defunct Ministry of Sports Development.”

While   many  see the appointment of Dikko as that of a  round peg in a round hole,  some believe  not much has changed  other than  nomenclature.

President of NFF Ibrahim  Gusau ,  hailed   President Tinubu  for appointing  such an experienced hand to take over the reins of the sports sector. He said he  had  no doubt that Dikko’s  vast experience will stand him in good stead in this new assignment.

Olympian and former national 110m Hurdles Champions, Dr. Godwin Obasogie,   hailed the  President  for scrapping the Ministry of Sports Development  but doubts  if the newly appointed NSC Chairman  can match the record  of  the late doyen of sports administration,  Isaac Akioye. He said Akioye’s    tenure in the old NSC is  still  regarded as the golden era  of Nigerian Sports.

Incidentally, there  was question  over the  status  of the NSC  with words rife that  former President Muhammadu Buhari   did not accent  both the NSC and NFF bills  despite the fact that they were passed  by  the  National Assembly.

Meanwhile, Senator John   Enoh  who spent  just one  year,  two months and  three  days  in office as the   first and only  minister  to head  the  Ministry of Sport Development ,  was   yesterday redeployed as  Minister of State for Trade and Investment in the Ministry of Industries.
