    FCT teacher emerges Maltina Teacher of the Year

    Serah Yusuf of Wisdom International School of Excellence (WISE),Tudun Wada, Lugbe, FCT Abuja, has emerged the winner of the 11th edition of the prestigious Maltina Teacher of the Year Competition at the Grand Finale held last weekend at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

    Yusuf received a cash prize of N10,000,000 (ten million naira), an all-expense-paid overseas capacity development training, and a N30 million school infrastructure project to be built in her honour by the Nigerian Breweries–Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund.

    The first runner-up, Adeola Akinsulure from Omole Senior Grammar School, Omole Phase 1, Ikeja, Lagos State, went home with N5,000,000, while the second runner-up, Chibuzor Amarikwa from Deeper Life High School, Kwana-Waya Village, Yola, Adamawa State, received N3,000,000. In addition, 24 other teachers who emerged as State Champions from their respective statesreceived N1,000,000 each for their outstanding performance and commitment to excellence in teaching.

    Speaking at the grand finale, the Special Guest and Governor, Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Commissioner forCommerce, Cooperative, Trade and Investment, Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, commended the initiative for elevating the teaching profession and reinforcing its value to society.

    Sanwo-Olu expressed profound appreciation to the NB-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund for its enduring commitment to celebrating teachers, supporting schools, and investing in the future of Nigerian children.

    “Nigerian Breweries, what you’re doing here today goes beyond corporate social responsibility; it is simply nation-building. Tonight, we honour the remarkable men and women whose passion, resilience, and creativity shape destinies and prepare our children not just for exams, but for life”, he said.

    He congratulated the overall winner, urging her to carry the honour with pride and humility as an ambassador of excellence for young people nationwide.

    “To every teacher being recognised today, whether you leave with a trophy or not, Lagos State celebrates you, and Nigeria celebrates you. You are the heroes whose work often goes unnoticed, yet whose impact is profound – resounding in every success, every breakthrough, and every community that thrives”, he added.

    Delivering her goodwill message, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, described the initiative as a notable partnership between the private sector and government in recognising those who devote their lives to nurturing the next generation.

    “Today is a powerful reminder that teachers are the true architects of national transformation. Behind every thriving society lies a corps of educators whose daily labour shapes minds, nurtures values, and builds the foundation for future progress”, Ahmad said, as she applauded the Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund for its sustained investment in education and the professional dignity of teachers.

    In his welcome remarks, the Managing Director, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Thibaut Boidin, said the competition is designed to celebrate winners and honour the profession that shapes other professions, noting that teachers remain “the steady hands shaping tomorrow.” Boidin highlighted the initiative’s growing impact, from improved school facilities to enhanced learning tools and professional recognition.

    Speaking during the event, the Corporate Affairs Director, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Uzodinma Odenigbo, described the number of entries for this edition as quite unprecedented, with over 2,000 entries submitted, the highest in the 11-year history of the competition. He attributed the milestone to the increasing trust teachers nationwide place in the programme and commended the judges for their integrity and professionalism in evaluating the entries.

    Odenigbo expressed gratitude to the programme’s partners, Union Bank, Air Peace, FCMB, and Eko Hotels & Suites; as well as key stakeholders including the Federal Ministry of Education, NUT, ANCOPSS, and TRCN, whose support in funding teacher registrations helped achieve the record-breaking turnout.

    In her acceptance remarks, the 2025 Maltina Teacher of the Year, Serah Yusuf, visibly moved by the announcement, expressed gratitude to the Education Trust Fund for recognizing the invaluable role of teachers. She described her win as a powerful motivation to deepen her work, particularly in slum communities.

    “I feel very excited after I was declared the winner. Initially, I was shocked because I never thought my effort would be worthy of this great award. With this exciting news, I am motivated to do more and expand the activities I have done so far in slum communities. I am grateful to Nigerian Breweries Plc for creating this platform to honor and recognize teachers. I dedicate this award to children living within the slum communities,” she said.

    Since inception, the Maltina Teacher of the Year Competition has produced ten grand prize winners, and they include Rose Nkemdilim Obi (2015), Imoh Essien (2016), Felix Ariguzo (2017), Olasunkanmi Opeifa (2018), Ezem Collins (2019), OluwabunmiAnani (2020), Abanika Taiye (2021), Alaku Ayiwulu (2022), Adeola Adefemi (2023), and Esomnofu Ifechukwu (2024). The 2025 winner, Serah Yusuf, now joins the prestigious league of national education ambassadors.

    The Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund has announced the call for entries for the much-anticipated 10th edition of the Maltina Teacher of the Year competition.

    Entries for the competition commenced on Thursday, May 16, 2024, and will close on Friday, July 19, 2024.

    The competition remains a platform to appreciate and reward teachers for their significant contribution towards the development of the education sector in Nigeria while inspiring excellence in teaching.

    Speaking at the flag-off ceremony held in Lagos today, Managing Director, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Hans Essaadi who was represented by the Human Resource Director, NB Plc, Grace Omo-Lamai explained that the flag-off of this year’s edition represents the beginning of another journey to appreciating and celebrating the tireless efforts and dedication of teachers.

    Essaadi stated that the company through the Felix-Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund remains unwavering in its commitment to supporting teachers in shaping future leaders and changing the lives of students for the better in Nigeria.

    “The Maltina Teacher of the Year competition presents an opportunity to express our gratitude to teachers for the sacrifices they make, the extra hours they invest, and the guidance and mentorship they provide to ensure the success of our youth. Through this competition, we aim to recognize the efforts of teachers in the countless ways they have shaped our future.   • NB unveils 2019 Maltina teacher of the year

    Nigeria’s foremost brewing company, Nigerian Breweries Plc, has announced the opening of entries for the 2019 Maltina Teacher of the Year. 2019 edition is the fifth edition of the programme.

    Speaking at the flag off ceremony held in Lagos recently, the Corporate Affairs Director, Nigerian Breweries Plc., Mrs. Sade Morgan disclosed that the Maltina Teacher of the Year is one of the initiatives through which the company contributes to the development of education in Nigeria in line with its corporate philosophy of ‘Winning with Nigeria.’

    Morgan explained that Maltina Teacher of the Year is an offshoot of the Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust fund, which was established by Nigerian Breweries in 1994 to facilitate its active contribution to the development of the education sector in Nigeria, is in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No.4.

    She noted that the 2019 edition of the initiative is symbolic as it is not only the fifth edition, but also because the company has added a new twist to the project with the introduction of the consumer engagement online contest tagged ‘That one teacher.’

    “Maltina Teacher of the Year is one initiative that is very close to the hearts of our vibrant and dynamic management team who are passionate about education. Through this initiative we have been able to rewrite history by changing the age long narrative that the reward of teachers is in heaven by ensuring that they receive deserved recognition while still in active service,” she said.

    She also stated that entries for the 2019 Maltina Teacher of the Year opens on Friday, May 16, 2019 and closes on July 12, 2019. According to her, interested teachers are advised to download application forms from the Maltina website – www.maltina-nigeria.com or pick up a form at their States Ministry of Education, Nigerian Union of Teachers office nationwide.

    Announcing the prizes for the 2019 Maltina Teacher of the Year, Morgan disclosed that the winner will receive a total cash prize of N6.5 million and a capacity training abroad while a block of classrooms will be built at the school where he or she teaches. She added that the first runner-up and the second runner-up for the competition will get a cash prize of N1m and N750, 000 cash prize respectively while state champion, will receive a cash reward of N500, 000 each.

    Also speaking at the ceremony, the Director, Basic & Secondary Education, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Lami Amodu disclosed that the Federal Government acknowledges the role of NB in celebrating the impact and contributions of teachers through this initiative.

    On his part, the Secretary General, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Dr. Mike Ene commended NB for bringing teachers all across the country to limelight, pledging the support of the union and charged teachers nationwide to participate and ensure they enter for this commendable initiative.

    In his remarks, the President, All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Principal Anselm Izuagie expressed appreciation to the management of Nigerian Breweries Plc for creating a platform that not only celebrates teachers but also provides reward for their efforts.

  • Best teacher lauds award as Maltina open entries for 2019

    The 2018 Maltina Teacher of the Year (MTOY) champion, Mr Olasukanmi Opeifa, has described the award organised by the Nigerian Breweries PLc as one of the best and most inclusive awards in the world.

    Speaking at a press briefing to announce entries for 2019 MTOY at the Civic Centre Victoria Island, Lagos on Thursday, Opeifa, an English teacher at the Government Day Secondary School, Lauri, Abuja, said since winning the award, a lot of recognition had come his way.

    “The MTOY is the biggest teacher prize in Nigeria. It is also the most inclusive of all teacher prizes in the world. I have received many awards since this award last year,” he said.

    NB PLC Corporate Affairs Director, Mrs Folasade Morgan, said public and private school teachers pan-Nigeria could register for the 2019 MTOY from Friday, May 17 and would expire July 12.

    Speaking on prizes for the winners, she said the best teacher would get a total of N6.5million – N500,000 for being a state champion; N1million for being the national winner; and N1 million that would be spread over five years as well as an overseas self development training. She said the winner’s school would also get a block of classrooms.

    First runner up would get N1 million; while the second runner up would get N750000. Both would also get N500,000 each as state champions.

    Mrs Morgan said the firm had also introduced an additional opportunity for more teachers who may not enter for the competition to win prizes if their former students nominate them on the firm’s online consumer engagement platform.

    “This year is symbolic. Being our fifth year of running this award, we have introduced the Consumer online engagement platform that our teachers are given a chance to participate. People can go online and nominate #thatoneteacher that made an impact on them and the more likes they  get they will win prizes for themselves and their teachers,”she said.

    Director, Basic and Secondary Education, Federal Ministry of Education (FME), Abuja, Dr Lami Amodu, praised NB PLC for sponsoring the award, adding that the government was in support of the award and would encourage teachers in Unity Schools and other public schools to apply.

  • 2018 Maltina Teacher of the Year entries extended

    A new window of opportunity has opened for teachers as the deadline for submission of entry for the 2018 Maltina Teacher of the Year has been extended to Friday, July 20.

    The Corporate Affairs Adviser, Nigerian Breweries, Plc, Mr. Kufre Ekanem explained that the extension was due to pressure from teachers across the country who wanted more time to complete the process.

    The Maltina Teacher of the Year, an initiative of the Nigerian Breweries Plc-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund, identifies showcases and rewards outstanding teachers in Nigeria.

    The entry for this year’s edition opened on Friday, May 25 and was to have closed last Monday.

    Ekanem enjoined interested teachers to avail themselves of the new opportunity by downloading application forms from the Maltina website.

    According to him, the 2018 Maltina Teacher of the Year will receive N1 million, a trophy and another N1 million every year for the next five years, and a block of classrooms built at the school where he or she teaches.

    The first runner-up he said will have N1 million and a trophy, while the second runner-up will be rewarded with N750, 000 and a trophy. In addition, each state champion, including the winner and the first and the second runners-up will get N500, 000 adding since inception in 2015, the Maltina teacher of the year initiative has produced three grand winners.

    Delta produces Maltina Teacher of the Year

    It was a glorious end to a rigorous selection process for Mr Felix Udochukwu Ariguzo, who was named the 2017 Maltina Teacher of the Year at the grand finale held at the Eko Hotel and Suites, last Thursday.

    Ariguzo, who teaches Physics and Chemistry at the Mastercare International School, Asaba, beat 26 other state champions to the coveted prize of N5million, an overseas training trip, a block of classrooms for his school and, in conjunction with Nicolodeon, an all-expense paid family trip to Lagos.

    The 38-year old said the win was a surprise to him as he encouraged so many other teachers to apply. He thanked Nigerian Breweries PLC for funding the award through the Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund.

    Ariguzo, who cried while receiving the prize, said: “These are tears of joy. I want to thank Nigerian Breweries for what they have done for us. From the first day they started this award, I was happy that somebody elsewhere had remembered teachers.

    “I told my colleagues it was time to get professional; let us get the certificates and do well. I never knew I would win,” said Ariguzo, who credited his mother for inspiring him to be a teacher.

    First runner up in the competition was Calista Chika Umezeoke of Our Lady of Apostles (OLA) Secondary School, Yaba, Lagos. She won, N1 million; while the second runner up,  Samuel Emochiagu of Winners International Academy, Agudama-Epie, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State got N750,000.

    The trio also benefited from the N500,000 given to each of the 27 teachers who emerged as state champions out of the 336 entries screened by a panel of judges led by Prof Pat Utomi.?

    In his speech, NB Managing Director Mr. Johan Doyer, said the Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund which was started with N100 million in 1994 had impacted over 25,000 students across the country, built 31 classroom blocks and 30 libraries equipped with furniture and books in both primary and secondary schools across various communities.

    He said the firm decided to add teachers as beneficiaries in 2015 with the introduction of the Maltina Teacher of the Year award.

    The pioneer winner was Mrs Rose Nkemdilim Obi of the Federal Government Girls\’ College, Onitsha; while Emo Essien of Special Children\’s School, Uyo, Akwa Ibom, won in 2016.

    “Today’s grand finale gives us an opportunity to share happiness with our teachers and I hope that this initiative reminds everyone to support and encourage our teachers always,” Doyer said.

    In her remarks, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule, who was represented by Mr. Adesina Odeyemi, a Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, described teachers as the most critical asset of the nation and thanked Nigerian Breweries for the initiative she described as a big boost to teachers and the teaching profession.

    Winner of the 2017 edition of the Maltina Teacher of the Year is to emerge at a grand ceremony scheduled to hold at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos today.

    Entries from teachers in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory were screened by a panel of judges chaired by Prof Pat Utomi.

    Overall winner would get N1 million and additional N1million yearly for the next five years. The prize is in addition to the N500, 000 the teacher would receive as a state champion. The winner will also get a developmental training opportunity abroad and a block of classrooms built where he/she teaches.

    The first and second runners-up will receive N1 million and N750, 000 in addition to the N500, 000 they each receive as state champions. Each State Champion will be rewarded with N500, 000 while the top 10 teachers will be recognised before the grand winners are announced.

    Mr. Kufre Ekanem, Corporate Affairs Adviser, Nigerian Breweries Plc and sponsors of the event said in a statement that the prize was instituted to give teachers the recognition they deserve.

    “The Maltina Teacher of the Year is an initiative of the Nigerian Breweries – Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund which was set up in 1994 to demonstrate the company’s commitment to the development of education in the country.     On Tuesday last week, the Grand Ball room of Eko Hotel Victoria Island almost spilled over with hundreds of stakeholders in the education sector who came to witness the start of another search for the best teacher in Nigeria by the Nigeria Breweries.

    The event tagged Maltina Teacher Of the Year Award [MTOY] and which has been running for two years now seems set to have greater participation this year as over ten commissioners of Education from various states and many top Government officials in the Education sector graced the opening event.

    Stakeholders in the education sector emphasized the importance of teachers and the teaching profession in the quest for the nation’s growth and development, at the unveil of the 2017 edition of the Maltina Teacher of The Year in Lagos

    In a paper to flag-off the 2017 edition of the initiative on Tuesday, Aloy Ejiogu, a Professor of Educational Management at the University of Lagos maintained that teachers are unarguably extremely invaluable drivers of societal norms, values and growth and no other person can have such an overarching influence on the life of the young members of our society as the teacher.

    He noted that the teachers’ impact is not only outstanding by its success stories, but also by its potential and real time errors, while also arguing that whereas the medical doctor buries his mistakes, and the engineer dies with his mistakes, the entire society perishes with the mistakes of the teacher.

    Mr. Imoh Essien, 2016 Maltina Teacher of the Year, a teacher from Special Education Center for Exceptional Children, Uyo, Akwa Ibom, called on government and other corporate organisations to emulate the gesture of the sponsors of the initiative to motivate teachers and improve the standard of education in the country.

    In his remarks, Managing Director of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Mr. Nicolaas Vervelde, represented by Mr. Kufre Ekanem, the Company’s Corporate Affairs Adviser, explained that in 2015, the Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund expanded its intervention in education in Nigeria to teachers through the Maltina Teacher of the Year initiative. The initiative, he disclosed, was hinged on the realisation that teachers seldom get the recognition they deserve in spite of the pivotal role they play in determining the quality of education. He declared that so far, the Maltina Teacher of the Year initiative has produced 42 State Champions and two overall winners.

    Vervelde added that entries for the 2017 Maltina Teacher if the Year opened on Tuesday 9th May 2017 and will close on Friday 7th July 2017. Interested teachers are advised to download application forms from the Maltina website. Applications forms should be completed and uploaded to the website or sent by email  or post to P.M.B. 12632, Marina, Lagos. Mr Vervelde asserted that the company will maintain the focus adopted for the 2016 to include teachers from both public and private secondary schools across Nigeria.

    Like last year, each State Champion will get Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N500, 000.00) and the Top 10 teachers will be recognized before the grand winners are announced. The 2nd and 1st runners-up will receive trophies and an additional Seven Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (N750, 000.00) and One Million Naira (N1, 000, 000.00) respectively.

    The Maltina Teacher of the Year 2017 will get an additional One Million Naira (N1, 000, 000.00) instantly plus One Million Naira every year for the next five years, a development training opportunity abroad and a block of classrooms built at the school where he/she teaches
