    Entry for Maltina Teacher of the year contest opens

    Nigerian Breweries Plc has officially announced the call for entries for the 11th edition of the Maltina Teacher of the Year competition. The announcement was made during the flag-off ceremony held in Lagos, recently.

    Entry submissions opened from Tuesday, June 24, 2025, to Friday, August 22, 2025. The Maltina Teacher of the Year Competition, a brainchild of the Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund, is an initiative that aims to recognise, celebrate and reward exceptional teachers in Nigeria’s public and private secondary schools while inspiring excellence in teaching. The interested and qualified teachers are urged to visit the website earmarked for the competition to register.

    Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, Managing Director, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Hans Essaadi, represented by the Corporate Affairs Director, NB Plc, Uzodinma Odenigbo, reiterated the company’s steadfast commitment to honouring the invaluable contributions of teachers.

    Essaadi who expressed profound gratitude to both lead and supporting sponsors, Union Bank of Nigeria Plc, Air Peace, and First City Monument Bank for their consistent support and belief in the project noted that the partnership has significantly helped to sustain and grow the initiative year after year.

    While appreciating the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), and the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) for treading the path with NB-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund, he stated that their support has been vital in ensuring the credibility and reach of the competition.

    “Today, we begin another chapter in this story, a celebration of the men and women who give so much of themselves to nurture the minds and shape the future of the next generation. We are encouraged by how the competition continues to grow – from the number of entries we receive each year, to the increasing involvement of partner organisations and even greater government engagement. It tells us one thing: our collective effort to raise the profile of teachers in Nigeria is working,” he said.

    Also speaking at the ceremony, Sarah Agha, Marketing Director at Nigerian Breweries Plc, reaffirmed Maltina’s deep connection to the cause. “At Maltina, our mission is to nourish lives and share happiness. No one deserves happiness more than our teachers – the quiet heroes who shape our children’s futures,” she said.

    Agha further noted that beyond rewarding winners, the initiative has helped elevate the status of teachers, foster community impact, and contribute meaningfully to educational development across Nigeria.

    Speaking in his capacity, the Corporate Affairs Director, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Uzodinma Odenigbo described the competition as a transformative platform that aligns with Nigerian Breweries’ commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 4 – Quality Education.

    Speaking on the reward for the competition, he noted that the overall winner for the 2025 edition would receive a trophy, a total cash prize of N10 million, and a capacity development training opportunity abroad and a school infrastructure project worth N30m in his/her school. “The first runner-up of the competition will receive a trophy and a total sum of N5,000,000, while the second runner-up receives a trophy and a total sum of N3,000,000. All State Champions will be rewarded with recognition plaques and a cash prize of N1, 000,000 each”, he stated.

    Maltina Teacher: how Nasarawa tutor won

    Esomnofu Ifechukwu of Crown Grace School, Mararaba in Nasarawa State, won the 10th Maltina Teacher of the Year competition in Lagos on Friday.

    Ifechukwu got N10 million, a paid for capacity development training overseas and a school infrastructure of N30 million.

    Kehinde Olukayode from Molusi College in Ogun State, was first runner-up and received N3 million, while second runner-up, Aniefiok Udoh from Community Secondary Commercial School in Akwa Ibom got N2 million.

    Thirty four teachers, who were state champions, received N1  million each.

    Lagos State Governor , Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, thanked Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund for its steady path and commitment to education through the  competition .

    He commended teachers for their  contribution to creating a brighter tomorrow despite challenges in doing their jobs.

    Sanwo-Olu said through the initiative, NB-FOETF has uplifted the teaching profession with its impact felt in groups and communities nationwide.

    He noted that the state has been fortunate to benefit from the initiative, as the company donated a digital language laboratory to Keke Senior High School, Lagos, in honour of 2023 Maltina Teacher of the Year, Adeola Adefemi. According to him, this contribution, meant to enrich our pupils’ learning environment, would encourage literacy and promote academic excellence.

    Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, represented by Director of Yaba College of Technology, Adedotun Abdul, hailed the trust fund for celebrating teachers and investing in educational resources and infrastructure

    Sununu said the Federal Government, through Ministry of Education, would restore the dignity of the profession i as it has developed a National Teaching Policy focused on their career path, remuneration, and teaching standards.

     He said the ministry would partner with Nigerian Breweries to deliver quality education.

     Managing Director of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Hans Essaadi, noted that the competition recognised and eulogised teachers for their labour of love and role in shaping minds to become noble human beings.

    Essaadi praised Nigerian teachers for their commitment and desire to make a difference in their pupils’ lives.

    Corporate Affairs Director, Sade Morgan, said this edition recorded 1,300 valid entries from 1,477 entries, while  36 states, and  FCT produced champions, unlike before.

    She thanked stakeholders and partners, including TRCN, NUT, Union Bank, Woodhall Capital Foundation, Alert Group, and Air Peace, for their support.

    Ifechukwu, praised NB-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund for recognising and rewarding teachers.

    He said winning the competition was a dream come true, considering he has been applying since 2020.

    Maltina Teacher to receive N10m, says Nigerian Breweries

    Nigeria Breweries Plc has said “Maltina Teacher’’ at this year’s competition” will receive a N10 million reward.

    Corporate Affairs Director, Sade Morgan, spoke in Lagos at a media parley. In addition, he said the winner will be given a trophy, and training abroad, while his school will get a classroom block or computer laboratory.

    Morgan noted the platform recognises and appreciate teachers for the stewardship of the most precious resource – the youth.

    She said the competition remains a platform to reward and inspire teachers for their contribution to development of education and society.

    “Our teachers continue to play their role and should be appreciated, recognised and celebrated for what they do in human and national development,” she said.

    Managing Director, Hans Essaadi, represented by Human Resource Director, Grace Omo-Lamai, said this year’s edition represents the beginning of another journey to appreciating and celebrating dedication of teachers.

    Essaadi said the company, through Felix-Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund, remains committed to supporting teachers in shaping leaders and changing lives of pupils.

    “Maltina Teacher of the Year competition is an opportunity to express our gratitude to teachers for their sacrifices, the extra hours they invest, and the guidance and mentorship they provide to ensure success of our youth. Through this competition, we recognise efforts of teachers in ways they have shaped our future. We acknowledge their selflessness, passion for teaching, and pursuit of the growth and development of our nation,” he said.

    He noted other organisations have identified with this initiative, adding Union Bank Plc and Woodhall Capital Foundation have been enlisted as main partners while First City Monument Bank and Alert Group are supporting partners.

    Morgan said first runner-up will also get a trophy and N3 million; second runner-up, a trophy and N2.5 million.

    All State Champions will be rewarded with plaques and N1 million each.
