  • Man charged with beating up policeman

    A 42-year-old man, Amstrong Ibe, yesterday appeared at a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly beating up a police sergeant while on duty in a hotel.

    Ibe, whose address was not given, is charged with assault, breach of the peace and felony.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Ayodele Adeosun alleged that the defendant committed the offence on April 12, at about 8:30pm, at New Planet Hotel, Aka Road, Ajangbadi, Lagos.

    He alleged that the defendant pushed Sergeant Tajudeen Oladoyin down the staircase.

    The prosecution said the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by harassing and disturbing the peace of customers at the hotel.

    The defendant, he said, also resisted arrest.

    The offence, he said, contravened sections 166, 173, and 117 of Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 as amended.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Aka Bashorun admitted the defendant to N100, 000 bail with one surety in the like sum.

    The case was adjourned till May 21.

  • Man charged with stealing four bikes

    A 21-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Ndagi Mohammed, yesterday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for allegedly stealing four motorcycles valued at N947,000.

    Mohammed, a resident of Idi-Araba, Mushin, Lagos, is being tried for alleged stealing.

    Prosecuting Inspector Aondohemba Koti said the defendant committed the offence on January 12, at Mushin, Lagos.

    He alleged that the defendant stole four motorcycles valued at N947, 000, property of the complainant, Mr. Jerry Peter.

    Koti said the complainant gave four motorcycles to the defendant to give to riders, for commercial purpose.

    “The complainant gave his four motorcycles to the defendant to get riders that will operate them and deliver money to him on a weekly basis.

    “The defendant sold the motorcycles and relocated to his hometown in Niger.

    “Efforts by the complainant to get the money or motorcycles proved unsuccessful, as the defendant refused to pick his calls.

    “The defendant was traced to his hometown and arrested,” the prosecutor alleged.

    Following his plea of not guilty, Magistrate M.O. Tanimola admitted him to N100, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    She said the sureties should be employed and show evidence of two years tax payments to the Lagos State Government.

    The case continues on March 6.

  • Man charged with raping 31-year-old woman

    The police in Ogun State yesterday arraigned a 40-year-old man, Olalekan Yinka, before an Ota Magistrates’ Court for alleged rape of a woman, aged 31.

    Yinka, who lives at 16, Igbele Durojaiye Street, Ota, is facing a count charge of rape, to which he pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecutor Abdulkareem Mustapha told the court that the accused allegedly raped the woman at his home on December 2, at 9:30 pm.

    He said the offence contravened Section 360 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

    Chief Magistrate Matthew Akinyemi admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N140, 000 with two sureties in the like sum.

    He said the sureties must live within the court’s jurisdiction and be employed.

    In addition, the sureties should show evidence of tax payment to the Ogun State Government, as part of the bail conditions.

    Akinyemi adjourned the case till January 7 for further hearing.

     

  • Man charged with attacking daughter with knife, iron

    A 30-year-old man, Mohammed Bramah, who allegedly attacked his 12-year-old daughter with a knife and an iron rod, was yesterday arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Bramah, of 85, Adeba Road, Lakowe, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of assault and occasional bodily harm preferred against him by the police.

    The girl, who started living with the defendant last September, sustained injuries on her eyes, hands and had scars all over her body.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Ehizoba Godspower told the court that the defendant committed the offences on December 1, about 6pm.

    He alleged that the defendant used knife, iron and belt to attack his daughter on her eyes and hands, which caused the eyes and hands to swell.

    He said the offences were punishable under sections 173 and 168 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Bramah pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate M.F. Onamusi granted him bail in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties in the like sum.

    He said the sureties, one of who must be a relation, must be employed in a reputable organisation, and show evidence of two years’ tax payment, among other conditions.

    The magistrate ordered that the child should be taken to the Vigilant Heart Home Foundation.

    She adjourned further hearing till January 16.

     

  • Man charged with assault

    A 46-year-old man, Peter Udom, was yesterday arraigned at the Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting another with a stick.

    Udom, was arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy and assault.

    Prosecutor Mary Ajiteru alleged that the accused committed the offence last Friday at Layoke Street, Odogunyan in Ikorodu, at about 2am.

    She alleged that the accused beat up Mr Adamu Dauda with a stick.

    “The accused hired four military officers to deal with the complainant around 2am.

    “The military men also assaulted the complainant’s expectant wife, Sikirat, by pushing her down.

    “The woman fainted, but she was immediately taken to hospital,” Ajiteru said.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate A. Oshodi-Makanju granted the accused N100,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    The case continues on January10.

     

  • Man charged with assaulting expectant mother

    A 21-year-old trader, Opeyemi Abdullahi, yesterday at an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, faced assault charge.

    The police accused him of beating up an expectant mother because she refused his request for an intimate relationship.

    Abdullahi, of Ikolaba Street, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, is facing a one count-charge of assault.

    Prosecutor Lucky Ihiehie said the accused committed the offence on November 1 about 5pm at Ojota bus stop, Lagos.

    He said the complainant, Koyinsola Saib, was returning from work with her friend when she met the accused at Maryland bus stop and he approached her for a relationship.

    The prosecutor alleged that the accused tried to blackmail the complainant.

    He alleged that Abdullahi accused the complainant, her husband, mother and brother of “selling children”.

    Magistrate Ejiro Kubeinje granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in the like sum.

    She ordered that the surety must live in the court jurisdiction with evidence of tax payment.

    The magistrate adjourned the case till December 2 for mention.

  • Man charged with damaging fence

    A 52-year-old man, Johnson Ige,  was yesterday arraigned before at an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun State.  Ige, of no fixed address, is was for alleged damaging N500,000 fence. charged with malicious damage.

    Prosecutor Chudu Gbesi said the accused committed the offence on March 18, at 1, Wonderful God Avenue, Onipanu, Ota.

    The fence,he, said, belonged to Mr. Solomon Sunday.

    Gbesi said the offence contravened Section 451 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun State, 2006

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Senior Magistrate G. E. Akan granted the accused bail with N50, 000, bail with one surety in the like sum.

    The surety should be employed, live in the court’s jurisdiction and show evidence of tax payment to the Ogun State government.

    The case continues on April 24.

    Man charged with unlawful possession of Indian hemp

    A 23-year-old man, Aigboboh Obiho, was arraigned yesterday in Lagos for allegedly being in possession of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp.
    Obiho, who is unemployed, appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
    Obiho resides in Iyana-Ipaja area of Lagos
    According to the Prosecuting Inspector, Clement Okuoimose, the accused committed the offence on January 14 along Oba-Akran Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos.
    Okuoimose said the accused was having with him weeds suspected to be Indian hemp when he was arrested by policemen on patrol.
    “The police, while on patrol at 1am stopped the accused and he was interrogated, but he could not give satisfactory explanations to what he was doing at that time of the night.
    “He was searched and 12 wraps of Indian hemp were recovered. He confessed to the police that he was a distributor of hemp and that he was there to distribute hemp to one of his customers. He said he was selling the hard drug to sustain himself,” the prosecutor said.
    The offence contravened sections 327 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
    The accused may be jailed for six months if found guilty according to the provisions of Section 327.
    The accused pleaded innocence and was granted N10, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.
    Magistrate O.Y Ekogbule adjourned the case to February 13.

  • Man charged with stealing ATM card, N2,000 cash, phone

    A 29-year-old man, Lukmon Ajinike, was yesterday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly hypnotising a woman and collecting her money and Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card.
    He was hauled before Magistrate A.A. Adesanya on charges of attempted felony, conspiracy and stealing.
    Ajinike, who lives in Isheri-Idimu, pleaded not guilty and was granted N200,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.
    Prosecuting Inspector George Nwosu said the accused with a man still at large committed the offence last December 28 at 221 Road, Gowon Estate, Egbeda.
    He said the accused and his accomplice conspired to hypnotise a woman, Conteh Martie, collected her phone, N2,000 cash and ATM card.
    Nwosu said the accused accosted the complainant as she was leaving an ATM point at Idimu and forcefully collected her belongings.
    He said: “The accused followed the complainant from the ATM point to the bus stop to board a bus to her destination.
    “The accused stopped her and asked her to direct him to any health centre in the vicinity because he was ill.
    “As the complainant was trying to direct him, the accused’s friend came and touched the complainant’s shoulder and thereafter ordered her to follow the accused to the health centre.
    “The complainant obeyed and when they got to Gowon Estate, the accused ordered the complainant to surrender her money, phone and ATM card which she did without any hesitation.
    “The accused and his friend ordered the complainant to run to the nearest market to get them some sand.
    “As the complainant was going, she came back to her senses and raised the alarm. People who were around helped to purse them, but only the accused was arrested.”
    The offences contravened Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
    The case was adjourned to January 23.

    Man charged with rape, theft of lover’s N50,000

    A 24-year old man, Samson Ogundele, who allegedly stole his girlfriend’s N50,000, was yesterday docked at a Surulere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Ogundele is facing a two-count charge of stealing and rape.

    Prosecuting Inspector Gabriel Ekundayo said the accused and the complainant, a 21-year-old woman, were boyfriend and girlfriend.

    “The complainant told the accused that she was no longer interested in the relationship but the accused did not agree. The accused also went to her house and started beating her and injured her eyes. The accused also raped her after the beating and stole her N50, 000, ’’ Ekundayo said.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrates M.I. Dan-Oni granted the accused N200,000 bail with two sureties.

    The case was adjourned till June 15.
