EPL: Haaland scores late penalty as Man City stun Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield

Erling Haaland scored a dramatic 93rd-minute penalty as Manchester City pulled off a stunning comeback against Liverpool to keep the Premier League title race alive.

A battling win for Pep Guardiola’s second-placed side cut Arsenal’s lead at the top to six points, with 13 games remaining.

Bernardo Silva’s 84th-minute equaliser had initially cancelled out Dominik Szoboszlai’s superb free-kick 10 minutes earlier.

Then in added time, Matheus Nunes was bundled over inside the box by Liverpool keeper Alisson and referee Craig Pawson pointed to the spot.

Haaland made no mistake, as he scored his 21st Premier League of the season to send the visiting fans wild.

City keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma then made a brilliant save to deny Alexis Mac Allister – a minute before City had the ball in the net again through Rayan Cherki’s finish from inside his own half, with Alisson out of his goal after supporting his side’s attack.

But the effort was ruled out after a video assistant referee (VAR) check, with Szoboszlai instead sent off for fouling Haaland before the ball rolled in, and a free-kick awarded to City instead.

Either way, it didn’t matter as City won at Anfield for the first time since 2021, but in front of fans for a first time since 2003.

City dominated possession in the first half but failed to make it count by taking their chances, with Alisson making a good block to deny Haaland in the first minute and again later in the half.

Their front three of Haaland, Antoine Semenyo and Omar Marmoush constantly asked Liverpool’s defence questions but lacked that ruthlessness in front of goal.

It took 25 minutes for Arne Slot’s side to have an attempt on goal themselves, but they were much better after the break, with Hugo Ekitike twice coming close to the opener.

First, his right-footed strike went narrowly wide with Donnarumma beaten, and minutes later, Salah found Ekitike with a superb sliced cross but the Frenchman’s header drifted agonisingly wide.

With a draw no good for City, the game opened up and Ruben Dias came close with a shot, before Florian Wirtz was denied by a terrific block from Marc Guehi at the other end.

Somehow the game remained goalless until the 74th minute when Szoboszlai stepped up to score his ninth goal of the campaign with an absolute belter from a set-piece – in the same manner that he did against Arsenal here in August.

But unlike that day when Liverpool held on for victory, City showed tremendous resilience to complete a memorable comeback.

With speculation about his future, it remains to be seen if Guardiola has managed his last game for City at Anfield.

But if he has, he will end with a rare win. This was his 11th visit and his only previous win (D4 L6) came here in 2021, when the game was played without fans due to the pandemic.

This was also only City’s third league win at Liverpool in 23 meetings as they completed a notable first league double over their rivals since the 1936-37 campaign.

EFL Cup: Man City to face Arsenal in final after big win over Newcastle

Manchester City booked a tantalising Carabao Cup final against Premier League leaders Arsenal by hammering holders Newcastle 5-1 on aggregate in a one-sided semi-final.

Trailing 2-0 heading into the second leg, Eddie Howe’s side needed something special in Wednesday’s return game at Etihad Stadium but endured the worst possible start as Omar Marmoush’s sixth minute goal set City on their way to a 10th final in the competition.

Marmoush, starting in place of Erling Haaland, nipped in and saw a deflected strike loop over Aaron Ramsdale and into the back of the net, while the Newcastle goalkeeper denied Tijjani Reijnders with a stunning save shortly after.

The visitors had chances to hit back but James Trafford did brilliantly to smother the ball at the feet of both Joe Willock and Anthony Gordon – and those near misses proved severe as they were punished by City thereafter.

Marmoush headed in from close range on the half hour mark and Reijnders slotted in a loose ball before half-time to make certain of the tie and allow the home supporters to enjoy a stress-free second period.

Anthony Elanga pulled a goal back for Newcastle on 62 minutes with a fine curling effort and Harvey Barnes had another disallowed.

But the damage had long been done as Pep Guardiola’s side confirmed their place in the League Cup final on Sunday, 22 March at Wembley Stadium.

  • Man City vs. Galatasaray:  Guardiola wary of  ‘top-class player ’ Osimhen

Man City vs. Galatasaray:  Guardiola wary of  ‘top-class player ’ Osimhen

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has described Nigeria International  striker Victor Osimhen as a “top-class player” and one his side must be wary of ahead of their final UEFA Champions League group-phase clash against Galatasaray tonight  at the Etihad Stadium.

Both teams approach the fixture with high but differing expectations. Manchester City are targeting a win that would secure them an automatic place in the round of 16, while a positive result for the Turkish champions would see Galatasaray advance to the round-of-16 playoffs.

City have recorded four wins, two defeats and a draw in the competition and currently sit 11th  on the table with 13 points – the same tally as sixth-placed Paris Saint-Germain but separated by goal difference.

Galatasaray, meanwhile, have posted three wins, three defeats and one draw, leaving them 17th  on the standings as they aim to finish Matchday 8 inside the top-24 places.

While both sides boast exciting attacking talent, attention will naturally fall on the strikers. Manchester City parade arguably the deadliest forward in world football in Erling Haaland, while Osimhen is widely regarded as one of the top five strikers in Europe and among the most sought-after.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Guardiola stressed his side’s determination to win while acknowledging the quality within the Galatasaray squad, which includes Osimhen, former City players Leroy Sané and Ilkay Gündogan, and Premier League-experienced midfielders Mario Lemina and Lucas Torreira.

“We will try to win tomorrow. Galatasaray are leading the Turkish league and all their players are exceptional,” Guardiola said.

“The quality they have – Osimhen is a top-class player. They link well with him. Leroy and the wingers are so quick. Gundo and Lemina are experienced players. They are one of the biggest clubs and they always have good players. We have to make an incredible effort with our fans.”

Osimhen who  recently registered his 50th  goal for Galatasaray  during the weekend’s 3-1 league victory over Fatih Karagumruk,   has already netted six times in this Champions League campaign.

Aside Osimhen, Guardiola also  said he was looking forward to a reunion with Galatasaray midfielder Ilkay Gundogan and winger Leroy Sane, both of whom enjoyed trophy-laden spells at City under the Spanish manager.

“I am grateful to both of them. Incredible contributions and lovely people and I am happy to see them back tomorrow,” he added.

“He (Ilkay Gundogan) was here longer than Leroy but Leroy gave us something unique. He was a special player and had a connection with Kevin (De Bruyne).

“Gundogan was captain in the treble-winning season and a massive character. A big player in the big games. Top.”

EPL: Man City get first win in five league games after beating Wolves

Omar Marmoush scored his first Premier League goal of the season to help Manchester City return to winning ways by easing past bottom side Wolves at Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola’s side had suffered a miserable start to 2026 by not winning any of their four league games, and the Spaniard decided to give star striker Erling Haaland and midfielder Phil Foden a rest by dropping them to the bench.

The duo came on in the second half by which time their team-mates had already made a positive impact to put City back on track in the top-flight.

Both sides set their stalls out early on, with visitors Wolves opting to sit back with a five-man defence, but City exerted their dominance by carving them open at will inside the first 10 minutes.

Debutant Marc Guehi almost made a dream start in a City shirt but his header at the back post was straight into the grasp of goalkeeper Jose Sa inside the first five minutes.

City grabbed the lead a minute later when Marmoush stabbed home Matheus Nunes’ whipped cross, before Semenyo latched on to a ball over the top but his first-time strike was bundled away by Sa.

The hosts doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time to effectively seal the points when Bernardo Silva fizzed a pass into the feet of Semenyo, who converted a cool finish from the edge of the area – and he also rattled the crossbar in the second half.

Yerson Mosquera’s flicked header clipped the crossbar for Wolves late on, but Rob Edwards’ side have now won just once all season and lie 14 points adrift of safety.

EPL: Man Utd thrash Man City in memorable derby victory

Michael Carrick enjoyed the perfect start to his second spell as Manchester United caretaker boss as second-half goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu inflicted massive damage on Manchester City’s Premier League title hopes.

After so much recent discontent, this was a day when Old Trafford came alive, leaving Sir Alex Ferguson celebrating in the stands and United fans sarcastically waving off City spearhead Erling Haaland when he was replaced 10 minutes from time.

City had goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to thank for keeping his side in the game, with the Italian making a string of superb saves to deny Dorgu, Amad Diallo, Casemiro and Mbeumo.

But even Donnarumma was powerless to prevent United going in front as skipper Bruno Fernandes led a surging counter-attack and fed Mbeumo to his left before the Cameroon forward, returning from Africa Cup of Nations duty, applied the finish.

Eleven minutes later, United doubled their lead as City defender Rico Lewis was caught flat-footed, allowing Dorgu to nip in front of him and turn home Matheus Cunha’s cut-back.

United had three goals disallowed for offside and Diallo hit the post late on but with Haaland extending his run to one goal in seven games, City didn’t look like mounting a comeback.

As United’s fans paid homage to Carrick, City boss Pep Guardiola slumped in his dug-out as his side’s run without a Premier League win extended to four games, opening the door for Arsenal to strengthen their grip on the title.

However briefly, United move up to fourth, something they failed to do so often under Ruben Amorim, leaving Carrick to celebrate with his new coaching team at the end.

  • EPL: Haaland nets 150th goal as Man City draw 1-1 with Brighton

EPL: Haaland nets 150th goal as Man City draw 1-1 with Brighton

Erling Haaland returned to scoring form with his 150th Manchester City goal – but his side’s Premier League title challenge is falling apart, with Brighton holding them to a third consecutive draw.

Pep Guardiola’s men have endured an underwhelming start to the year, with poor results and injuries to key players handing the initiative to Arsenal, who could go eight points clear at the top if they beat Liverpool on Thursday.

Brighton were looking to capitalise on City’s makeshift backline and Pascal Gross found room to thump a header at goal which was clawed out by Gianluigi Donnarumma, with the German unable to convert the follow-up.

Georginio Rutter then released Ferdi Kadioglu with a pass from the halfway line, but the Turkey international could only shoot straight at the towering Italian goalkeeper Donnarumma.

The Seagulls were exploiting gaps in the opposition defence – Rutter ran clear himself to bear down on goal but was denied by Abdukodir Khusanov’s brilliant, last-ditch challenge.

But Brighton failed the most of their chances and paid for that as City took a 41st-minute lead.

Star man Haaland converted a penalty, and scored the Premier League 35,000th goal since its 1992 inception, after Jeremy Doku was brought down in the box by Diego Gomez – the referee only awarding the spot-kick after reviewing it on the pitchside monitor.

Captain Bernardo Silva clipped the post in the second half as the hosts looked to stretch their lead, but Fabian Hurzeler’s men hit back through Kaoru Mitoma’s lovely finish from the edge of the area.

Gomez incredibly missed when picked out by Mitoma a couple of yards from goal, and both sides had to settle for a point.

  • Guardiola hails Man City’s ‘big statement’ in win at Palace

Guardiola hails Man City’s ‘big statement’ in win at Palace

Pep Guardiola claimed Manchester City had made a “big statement” in the Premier League title race with their 3-0 win against Crystal Palace.

Guardiola’s side struggled to impose themselves for long spells at Selhurst Park but Erling Haaland’s header late in the first half finally broke the deadlock.

After riding their luck thanks to several missed Palace chances before and after Haaland’s opener, City showed a ruthless streak to kill off the Eagles.

Phil Foden drilled home from the edge of the area before Haaland added a late third from the penalty spot.

Second-placed City have now won four in a row in the league and sit just two points behind leaders Arsenal as the title race heats up.

Guardiola was especially impressed with the way City dug deep to subdue tenacious Palace just days after their draining 2-1 win at Real Madrid in the Champions League.

“Always when you approach the game, whoever the opponent, on your terms, good things are going to happen. There’s no sense to playing football without being who you are as an individual,” Guardiola said.

“Still we are not at the top, but we are learning. We will be closer in the future. After playing in the Bernabeu, then we prepared to play the FA Cup winners.”

It was a sweet victory for Guardiola after he was out-witted by Palace boss Oliver Glasner in last season’s shock FA Cup final defeat at Wembley.

Palace have been a thorn in the side of champions Liverpool, beating them three times this season, and Guardiola acknowledged the threat posed by the south Londoners.

“It’s behind a lot of work. Palace are so strong. Every time we play them it’s so difficult,” he said.

Guardiola conceded City are still a work in progress following his expensive overhaul of the squad since last season.

But he took heart from their willingness to fight for the win over Palace – a vital characteristic they lacked throughout last season.

“Many things we have to improve. Madrid gave me a lot of things, that still we are not ready, not in mentality but in how to approach certain games. They are young some of the players. But 3-0 here is a big statement for us,” he said.

“When you win in the past, you believe the past was perfect, always brilliant, always the red carpet. When we won with 100 points, all the things we achieved, we had a lot of games like today. The resilience was part of that.

“There are moments that you struggle. Madrid was not the perfect game, but it was a step. We fought unbelievably to achieve that.

“We are in a better position than last season. We are close in the competitions we are in,” Guardiola added.

UCL: Man City hit back to earn brilliant win at Real

Manchester City recovered from a goal down to collect a magnificent Champions League victory at perennial winners Real Madrid and leave the La Liga side’s manager Xabi Alonso precariously holding on to his job.

Alonso is under severe pressure following a poor run in the league and a reported clash of culture with his players and the heat will now crank up after failing to hold on to their early advantage.

The hosts suffered a blow as leading goalscorer Kylian Mbappe was deemed only fit enough to be on the bench, but the France captain did not make an appearance as his team-mates fell to a demoralising defeat.

City almost suffered a nightmare start when Matheus Nunes tripped Vinicius Jr inside the first two minutes and the referee pointed to the spot, but then awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box after consultation with the video assistant referee (VAR).

Federico Valverde almost converted the resulting effort, but his drilled shot deflected narrowly wide, while the sprightly Vinicius dinked wide at the far post shortly after.

It seemed like City had weathered the early storm and were controlling the possession before being hit on the break as Rodrygo collected Jude Bellingham’s cross-field pass and rifled in his first goal since January.

City, though, were behind for just seven minutes as the visitors scored with their first clear opportunity of the contest – academy left-back Nico O’Reilly poking home from close range after Josko Gvardiol’s header was scooped back into the danger zone by Thibaut Courtois.

The English side turned the game around on the stroke of half-time courtesy of Haaland’s penalty after the striker was bundled over in the box by Antonio Rudiger – they could have extended their advantage further but Courtois made a stunning save to deny the Norwegian.

Real attempted to draw level in the second half with Bellingham chipping over and substitute Endrick flicking a header which clipped the crossbar, but City held on to a tremendous victory.

  • EPL: Man City win to move two points of Arsenal

EPL: Man City win to move two points of Arsenal

Manchester City blew the Premier League title race wide open by capitalising on leaders Arsenal’s defeat in comfortably dispatching Sunderland at Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola’s side had seen the Gunners suffer a last-gasp loss against Aston Villa at lunchtime on Saturday and ensured there was no slip-up of their own by swatting aside the visitors to move to within two points of the top.

City initially found it difficult to make inroads against the Sunderland’s low block and were frustrated by a solid five-man backline.

Having kept the hosts at bay, the visitors saw the game snatched away in the space of four first-half minutes, courtesy of goals from City’s two centre-halves.

The Black Cats defenders sat back on Ruben Dias and it proved fatal as the Portugal international strode forward and unleashed a thunderous 30-yard strike, which took a deflection off Dan Ballard and swerved into the top corner.

The hosts doubled their advantage on 35 minutes when Josko Gvardiol leapt highest to power home an unstoppable header from Phil Foden’s inswinging corner and give the hosts a comfortable half-time cushion.

City sought to add to the scoreline in the second half and Jeremy Doku’s low curling effort struck the post, while Foden’s first-time follow-up was brilliantly blocked.

Erling Haaland’s hooked shot was cleared off the line by Lutsharel Geertruida, before Rayan Cherki provided a sublime assist for Foden to head in the third goal.

Chances were at a premium for Sunderland in the opening period, with Enzo le Fee shooting into side-netting, but they did have better opportunities in the second half.

City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made a big save to deny Wilson Isidor after Dias’ mistake, while captain Granit Xhaka’s thumping low effort beat the Italy international but cannoned against the post.

Sunderland saw Luke O’Nien sent off in injury-time for a nasty, studs-high challenge on Matheus Nunes, with the yellow card upgraded to a red after referee Andy Madley reviewed the challenge on the pitchside monitor.

  • Fulham 4-5 Man City: Chukwueze’s  brace, Iwobi’s  stunner  light up Craven  Cottage  in nine-goal thriller

Fulham 4-5 Man City: Chukwueze’s  brace, Iwobi’s  stunner  light up Craven  Cottage  in nine-goal thriller

Super Eagles’ duo of Samuel Chukwueze and Alex Iwobi delivered a dazzling attacking show, while compatriot Calvin Bassey stood tall in defence, as Fulham pushed Manchester City to the brink in a breathtaking 5–4 contest at Craven Cottage on Tuesday night.

Manchester City may have left with all three points, but the night belonged largely to Nigeria’s attacking duo, who spearheaded Fulham’s spirited fightback after the Premier League champions raced into a commanding lead.

City entered the game with Erling Haaland chasing history, and the Norwegian ended his goal drought in the 17th minute, converting Jeremy Doku’s cross to reach his 100th  Premier League goal faster than any player in history.

Before then, he had already rattled the post early in the game, signalling the danger to come.

Fulham, who started brightly in spells, were kept in the tie early on by excellent defending from Calvin Bassey. The Nigerian centre-back repeatedly snuffed out City attacks, made crucial interceptions, and provided leadership at the back even as pressure mounted.

City’s quality, however, broke through again. Haaland turned provider for Tijjani Reijnders in the 37th minute, before Phil Foden unleashed a long-range screamer to put Pep Guardiola’s side 3–0 up just before halftime.

Fulham refused to melt under pressure. Their best performer of the first half, Emile Smith Rowe, headed home a lifeline to make it 3–1 at the break.

Marco Silva made a bold statement at halftime by introducing Samuel Chukwueze, and the Super Eagles winger transformed Fulham’s attack instantly.

But City restored their cushion almost immediately through another composed Foden finish, and an unfortunate Berge deflection made it 5–1.

Still, Fulham continued to fight—and it was Alex Iwobi who sparked hopes of an improbable comeback. The Nigerian midfielder drilled a low long-range strike into the bottom corner in the 57th minute, cutting the deficit to 5–2 and injecting belief into the stadium.

The winger, initially quiet after his introduction, exploded to life in the 72nd minute, racing onto a loose ball to smash home Fulham’s third goal. Craven Cottage erupted—and Chukwueze wasn’t done yet.

Eight minutes later, he struck again, finishing a flowing counterattack to make it 5–4 and send the home crowd into a frenzy. The brace capped his most electrifying performance since joining Fulham, showcasing the pace, directness, and clinical finishing the Super Eagles winger is renowned for.

Amid the chaos, Calvin Bassey delivered one of his most assured performances of the season. His recovery runs, well-timed blocks and composure under intense pressure kept Fulham competitive. Without him, the damage could have been far worse.

His late defensive interventions helped Fulham stay within touching distance as they threw bodies forward chasing an equaliser.

Fulham came inches away from a dramatic 90+ minute leveller when Josh King’s effort was cleared off the line by Josko Gvardiol.

Despite the defeat, Fulham’s Nigerian trio stole the spotlight—Chukwueze with a brilliant brace, Iwobi with a superb goal and tireless creativity, and Bassey with a commanding defensive display.

Manchester City, meanwhile, leave Craven Cottage as only the second visiting team to win there this season, closing the gap at the top of the Premier League standings.

But on a night filled with elite football, it was the Super Eagles stars who provided the magic.
