  • Man dies in filling station

A man identified as John Kalu yesterday fainted and died at Olupese Filling Station near Oshodi Bus Stop.

Kalu, who lives in Ikotun, was said to be coming from Alimosho General Hospital.

An eyewitness, who is a petrol attendant, told The Nation that Kalu crossed the road and sat near the dispenser.

She said: “My dispenser was empty, so I allowed him to sit down. Few minutes later, we saw the man on the floor, but he had not died then. So we called the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA). Unfortunately, the man died before LASEMA came and they told us they could not attend to a dead person. We later called their Emergency Response Team (ERT) and they told us they were coming.

“We can’t leave him here and close, we will have to push him to the roadside. Besides, our tanker can come in any time from now and the body is on the tanker’s pathway.”

She said the man had no phone on him, adding: “The only thing we found with him was hospital documents from Alimosho General Hospital which bore his name and address. I wonder why the hospital would have allowed the man to leave their premises and died here. It is obvious he is not feeling fine.”

Another eyewitness, who pleaded not to be named, said nobody knew where the man was coming from. He said it was only the documents on him that showed he was coming from the hospital.

“I think he fell dizzy and had to sit down at the filling station for like 15 minutes to regain his strength. He fell on the floor, people rushed to him and tried to sit him up, but after a while, he fell down again and they had to call for emergency. But the man dropped dead before LASEMA came to the scene.”

“Before LASEMA came to the scene, some area boys searched him and found some hospital documents from Alimosho General Hospital on him. They also found about N4, 000 with him, they took the cash and shared it among themselves. The LASEMA officials took the hospital documents and later brought them back,” he said.

He said that people have been having such competitions around the suburb.

“However, we have never seen or heard of anyone drinking 20 sachets of [that rum] before”.

If the economy had been in good condition I don’t think any right-thinking man would like to embark on such a dangerous venture just to earn some money to feed his family.”
