Man held over death of boy, 16

Detectives from the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) have arrested Wasiu Oloriesho for allegedly killing a 16-year-old boy Seun Babalola.

Babalola was a cult war victim at Idi-Araba in which many persons, including his grandmother, Mrs Mary Babalola, 64 were injured.

It was gathered that they were about closing their shop to go home when gun- totting men stormed the area, shooting sporadically.

A stray bullet was said to have hit the teenager on his head where he sought refuge; another bullet pierced his grandmother’s thigh.

The victims were rushed to Lagos University Teaching Hospital  (LUTH) but the boy died before reaching the hospital.

Oloriesho’s arrest was said to have pleased some of the victims, who are calling for his trial.

But Seun’s grandmother said yesterday that she would have preferred to die in his place.

According to her, the boy was killed in his prime, when he was about to sit for the West African Examination Council (WAEC).

She said “I do not know what led to the shooting and I do not know the man that killed my grandson and injured my leg, but it is good if he has been arrested. How I wish I was the one that died instead of my grandson.

“On that day, we were about going home, when we suddenly heard gunshots everywhere. Everybody was running for safety, before I knew what was happening I felt something hit me on my leg and I fell down.

“Immediately after the shooting they left the area. I asked the people who came to help me about my grandson but they rushed me to LUTH. I was later told that my grandson and others who sustained injuries were brought to the hospital. It was the following day that they told me my grandson died because the bullet hit him on his head.

“I have been bedridden since then. I urinate and defecate on the same spot except with the assistance of some neighbours and my children.

“The killing of my grandson is the most devastating thing that has ever happened to me.  After the incident I have been living from hand to mouth.

Seun’s mother Mrs. Yinka Adejuwon, who claimed that her son started living with her mother when he was six-month-old, explained that she has been heartbroken since his death.

She pleaded with the detectives to ensure that the killers were brought to book.
