    Man remanded for kidnap of five-year-old in Kogi

    The Lokoja Chief Magistrates’ Court II yesterday remanded Abdulkareem Dahiru in prison for allegedly kidnapping the five-year-old son of Pastor Jonathan Suleiman, in Okene.
    According to the Prosecuting Counsel, Mohammed Abaji, the accused was arrested in Okengwe, Okene council, following information linking him with suspected kidnappers and robbers.
    Other gang members – Abdulrahman Muhammed (a.k.a Abuh Hanifa); Ibrahim Abdulmumin and Jatto Aliyu Ahmed, are currently being tried.
    Chief Magistrate Alhassan Husaini gave the remand order following the arraignment of the accused.
    He noted that Dahiru had no legal representation and consequently did not take his plea, and ordered that he be remanded at the Federal Prisons, Koton-Karfe.
    The case was adjourned till February 7 for further mention.

    A 25-year-old man, David Adeoti, was yesterday remanded in prison custody by an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court for the alleged rape of a 14-year-old girl.
    Police prosecutor Inspector Bayo Ajiboye told the court the accused committed the offence on October 12.
    He alleged that the accused unlawfully raped a secondary school pupil and impregnated her.
    According to him, the girl was sent on an errand by her grandmother but the accused lured her with a gift inside his shop and cleverly removed her cloth.
    He said he had carnal knowledge of her, saying after a month, she missed her period which made her grandmother raise an alarm.
    The police prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 31 of the Child Right Laws of Ekiti State.
    He said he duplicated his case file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.
    The Magistrate, Mrs. Modupe Afeniforo, who frowned at the high rate of rape in the society, ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody pending advice from DPP.
    She adjourned the case till January 15.

    Man remanded for ‘killing’ neighbour over missing chicken

    A 38-year-old man, Idowu Ajewole, has been remanded in prison custody by a Magistrate’s Court in Akure, the Ondo State capital for allegedly killing his former neighbour, Monday Bassey (28), over a missing chicken.

    The accused was alleged to have killed Bassey at 3pm on December 12, last year.

    It was gathered that a disagreement ensued between the duo, who were flatmates, at Adebowole Street, Oke-Aro in Akure, when Ajewole allegedly found some of his missing chicken’s feathers in Bassey’s belongings when they were packing out of the house.

    Ajewole, who informed the police about the theft, allegedly killed Bassey when he pushed him into the police van.

    Police prosecutor Pelumi Adejuwon alleged that the suspect made the deceased hit his head on the floor as he pushed him inside the police vehicle. Adejuwon concurred that Bassey died as a result of an injury he sustained when he fell.

    He told the court that Ajewole’s action was responsible for the victim’s death.

    The prosecutor noted that the offence is contrary to and punishable under Section 316 and 319 of the Criminal Code.

    Adejuwon prayed the court for adjournment of the case to enable him send the duplicate of the case file to the Director of Public Prosecution.

    He urged the court to remand the accused in prison custody, pending the out come of the advice from the office of the DPP.

    Ajewole’s counsel A.K .Adewusi said he was not opposing the adjournment due to the nature of the charge.

    The magistrate, Sunday Adedapo, ordered that the accused be remanded in Olokuta Prison, pending the outcome of the legal advice.

    The case was later adjourned till January 28.
