Amorim blames Man United’s defensive mindset for draw at Fulham

Ruben Amorim said his Manchester United players abandoned their attacking principles after taking the lead against Fulham, claiming their defensive mentality cost them victory in Sunday’s 1-1 Premier League draw at Craven Cottage.

United scored through an own goal off Rodrigo Muniz’s back but surrendered their advantage when Fulham substitute Emile Smith Rowe struck 93 seconds after entering the fray.

The result leaves the visitors with a solitary point from their opening two Premier League matches.

“We scored the goal and then we forgot about how we play. We want to win so badly and that is a good feeling, that we scored a goal and everyone on the pitch was thinking, ‘Let’s hold onto the advantage and try to win the game’,” Amorim told the BBC.

“For me that is the moment that we have to enjoy more and push the opponent. We tried to press the opponent super high and left a lot of space.

“We have to grow up a lot as a team. For me the most important thing is that during the week they were working really hard. Today we worked really hard and we are going to improve. The moment that changed the game was our goal.”

A pivotal moment in the first half saw United skipper Bruno Fernandes miss a penalty that was awarded after a VAR check, with the playmaker sending it high over the bar.

It marked the fifth time he has missed a penalty since his Premier League debut in 2020.

“I think he is not used to missing penalties. He knows the importance, that this moment can have a huge impact on the team,” Amorim told Sky Sports.

“During the game he was not happy because he was not involved and he has so much responsibility and I think he thought missing the penalty was huge for us.”

Despite already trailing leaders Arsenal by five points early in the campaign, Amorim remained bullish about United’s prospects in the league.

“We just want to win games. The players know they are playing in a club where they need to be better,” he said. “I am really confident that we are going to get many wins.”

Why I chose Man United over others – Sesko

Benjamin Sesko has opened up on why he turned down offers from Arsenal and Newcastle United to sign for Manchester United.

The 22-year-old’s move to Old Trafford was officially confirmed on Saturday, ending weeks of speculation over his future.

Sesko, who was widely reported to be Mikel Arteta’s top striker target earlier this summer, saw a potential transfer to Arsenal collapse. Newcastle United also made a late approach after it seemed likely he would remain with his Bundesliga club.

Instead, the Slovenian international penned a contract with United until June 2030, citing the club’s long-term vision as a decisive factor.

“When we discussed the project, it was clear that everything is in place for this team to continue to grow and compete for the biggest trophies again soon.”

Sesko could be officially unveiled to fans when United face Fiorentina in a pre-season friendly on Saturday.

Spurs beat Man United  in scrappy Europa League final

Tottenham Hotspur won a scrappy Europa League final 1-0 against Manchester United in Bilbao  to salvage their season and earn a berth in next year’s Champions League thanks to Brennan Johnson’s bundled first-half goal.

It was Spurs’ first silverware since the 2008 League Cup and their first European trophy since 1984, but the fourth time they had beaten United this season.

Johnson scored in the 42nd  minute when United’s defence crumbled as Pape Sarr swung in a cross while goalkeeper Andre Onana remained rooted to his line. Johnson and United defender Luke Shaw rushed in and the ball appeared to glance off both of them and in, past Onana’s desperate swipe.

The goal was as scrappy as the game in a matchup of teams who have had wildly disappointing Premier League seasons, with United languishing in 16th and Spurs 17th .

United’s Rasmus Hojlund had a terrific chance to equalise with a header midway through the second half, but Spurs’ Micky van de Ven leapt for a stunning clearance off the line.

JUST IN: Tottenham beat Man United to win Europa League

Tottenham ended their 17-year wait for a trophy as Brennan Johnson’s first-half goal was enough to beat Manchester United in the Europa League final.

Victory means under-fire head coach Ange Postecoglou has fulfilled a promise to deliver silverware in his second season at Spurs.

Postecoglou, who said he would “never be a clown” in his pre-match address, brought smiles and unbridled joy to the faces of the 15,000 official, and many unofficial, Tottenham fans in Bilbao’s San Mames Stadium.

Victory may not save Postecoglou from a Spurs exit in the coming weeks. But the Australian will leave as a hero after joining Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw in winning a European trophy with the north London giants.

In addition to following the lead of Newcastle and Crystal Palace in making this a season of glory for clubs who rarely, if ever, win a trophy, Tottenham are also set to benefit from a £100m windfall after qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

As had to happen in a battle between the two lowest-placed teams ever to contest a European final, for the losers, there was no silver lining.

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim will send his side into the final Premier League game of the season against Aston Villa on Sunday with huge questions over his ability to make them competitive following their worst season since the 1973-74 relegation campaign.

Amorim enjoys the backing of the ownership but his decision to pick Mason Mount ahead of Alejandro Garnacho in an attacking role did not work. And with skipper Bruno Fernandes unusually subdued, United lacked the guile to drag themselves back into the game once they had fallen behind.

They came close to an equaliser with a Rasmus Hojlund header, following Guglielmo Vicario’s error, that was acrobatically cleared off the line by Micky van de Ven midway through the second half.

Vicario then made a dramatic late save to keep out Luke Shaw’s header.

Man United set to offload Garnacho, Antony for Osimhen transfer

Manchester United could reportedly be set to sell both Alejandro Garnacho and Antony to Atletico Madrid during the 2025 summer transfer window.

Ruben Amorim has admitted that his side will need to offload several players before they can afford to sign reinforcements this summer, and Garnacho and Antony are among the stars tipped to depart Old Trafford on a permanent deal ahead of the new campaign.

If Man United are able to sell Garnacho and Antony for a combined fee of €100m, it could help them land top target Victor Osimhen.

The Nigerian is set to leave Napoli on a permanent deal this summer, following a loan spell at Galatasaray, and Old Trafford is deemed to be one of his more likely destinations.

Antony has impressed following his loan move to Real Betis in January, although Garnacho has only scored two goals in his last 30 appearances as his struggles under Amorim continue.

However, Atletico Madrid are monitoring both players and could be set to launch a double deal bid this summer, according to TBR Football.

Garnacho spent seven years in Atletico Madrid’s academy set-up before moving to Man Utd in 2022, and Diego Simeone is reportedly eager to bring him back to the Wanda Metropolitano this year.

Atletico Madrid will reportedly intensify their pursuit of the Man United pair in the coming weeks, with the Red Devils expected to ask for a €100 million fee for the duo.
