Leicester, Man City in league cup Q/Final showdown

Which of the City will survive the heat Tuesday in the League cup quarter finals as Leicester hosts Manchester city?

Manchester City are aiming to win their third EFL Cup in five seasons and visit Leicester City on Tuesday for a place in the semi-finals.

Manuel Pellegrini won the competition twice during his tenure but Pep Guardiola’s first tilt was stopped by Manchester United last season.

City have lost just once across all competitions this term, a Champions League dead rubber against Shakhtar Donetsk, but were less than convincing in the previous two League Cup ties to give the Foxes a glimmer of hope.

Leicester City host Manchester City at the King Power Stadium with kick-off scheduled for 7.45pm on Tuesday, December 19.

Leicester have no fresh injury concerns, with Robert Huth and Matt James sidelined, but Wilfried Ndidi is suspended after picking up two yellow cards in the loss to Crystal Palace.

It is a similar tale for City, with Vincent Kompany and John Stones sidelined with muscle and hamstring injuries respectively. Benjamin Mendy is out for the foreseeable with a knee injury.

Pep Guardiola fielded strong sides in narrow wins over West Brom and Wolves with a sprinkling of youth in the form of Tosin Adarabioyo and Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Phil Foden, fresh from his BBC Young sportsperson of the year win, could play a part after making his Premier League debut at the weekend.

Manchester City currently running riot in the premier league have been tipped to continue the rampage in the league cup.

Leicester City boss Claude Puel has claimed that it is “difficult to find a solution” against Manchester City.

On Tuesday night, the two clubs will lock horns in the EFL Cup quarter-finals and both teams are expected to make changes for the game at the King Power Stadium.

However, Puel has suggested that he is not optimistic about a result against Pep Guardiola’s side, who sit 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

The 56-year-old told reporters: “They are the top team in Europe. It’s difficult to beat them, other teams have tried but without the results.

“With the ball and without the ball, they are the best at the moment. It’s difficult to find a solution against them.”

Last month, Man City ran out 2-0 winners when the teams met in the top flight. Puel’s submission may however be the usual mind game as he is likely to put all he has into the game. With Ndidi out of the game Puel may be tempted to give compatriots Ahmed Musa a chance.

British Police probes alleged racist attack on Sterling

British police are investigating an alleged racially aggravated assault on Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling before the Premier League leaders’ victory against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

“On Sunday 17 December 2017, police were made aware that a 23-year-old man had been subject to a racially aggravated assault,” a police spokesman said.

The Sunday Telegraph newspaper reported that Sterling was apparently kicked and racially abused as he arrived at City’s Etihad Campus on Saturday morning before their 4-1 win over Tottenham, during which the attacker scored twice.

The report said a man appeared to be waiting for the 23-year-old England international as he arrived at the training ground to prepare for the game.

The newspaper said it is understood that Sterling got out of his car to ask what the problem was but was then kicked in the leg.

City have not commented on the matter and a formal complaint has not yet been lodged but police confirmed they are treating it as “a hate crime”.

“While an official report has not yet been made, enquiries will be carried out and officers are treating it as a hate crime.”

Sterling has been one of the stars of City’s record-breaking season; scoring 15 goals in all competitions as Pep Guardiola’s side have romped clear at the top of the Premier League and racked up 16 straight league wins.

Sterling scored twice in a 4-1 triumph over Spurs, City’s 16th league win in a row which maintains their healthy 11-point lead atop the table.

Tunnel fracas: Man United, City get Friday deadline

Manchester United and Manchester City have been given extra time to provide their observations following reports of an incident after Sunday’s Premier League game.

They now have until 6pm on Friday, the Football Association has announced, to provide an explanation for what happened during a tunnel altercation after City’s 2-1 win at Old Trafford.

It is understood the FA has extended the deadline by two days because they are mindful of Wednesday night’s Premier League fixtures.

Leaders Manchester City are at Swansea City, while second-placed United host Bournemouth.

Jose Mourinho was irked by the loud music and celebrations from Manchester City’s open dressing room as he made his way to his post-match press conference and an altercation followed when he made his feelings known to City goalkeeper Ederson.

Jose Mourinho walked out of his Manchester United press conference after being questioned about his role in the post-match fracas after the Manchester derby.

The United boss then had a carton of milk thrown towards him from inside the dressing room which hit one of his backroom staff, according to Sky sources, while Manchester City assistant coach Mikel Arteta suffered a cut to the head in the incident but no punches were thrown.

It is understood United were surprised at the manner of City’s celebrations after the full-time whistle.

The incident was not included in referee Michael Oliver’s match report, prompting the FA to investigate.

Jose Mourinho accused Manchester City’s players of a shortage of education and class after breaking his silence on the Old Trafford tunnel bust-up.

The Man United boss claimed Pep Guardiola’s Blues showed a lack of respect with their celebrations in the away dressing-room following Sunday’s 2-1 win in the first vs second clash that gives them an 11-point lead at the top of the table.

Mourinho said Red Devils would not behave in the same way in that situation and claimed their respectful post-match celebrations following a 3-1 win at Arsenal the previous weekend proved his point.

  • Messi’ rejected £88m signing bonus from Man City

Messi’ rejected £88m signing bonus from Man City

Lionel Messi turned down an offer of a €100million (£88m) signing bonus from Manchester City to pen a new deal at Barcelona.

The Argentine super star put an end to suggestions he would leave the Nou Camp last month as he finally signed a £500,000-a-week contract which will tie him to the club until 2021.

But, according to Spanish outlet Marca, that followed a huge proposal to bring Messi to the Etihad.

City are said to have offered him an incredible £850,000-a-week to move to the Premier League, along with the signing bonus.

Marca also claims that Messi’s representatives were approached by the Premier League leaders without permission from his current club.

They moved early, as Messi would have been able to speak to City in the New Year if he had not signed a new deal. His old contract was set to run out in the summer.

But City apparently knew they would need to move sooner rather than later if they wanted to bring in the 30-year-old.

In the end, Messi was not convinced it was in his interests to make the move from one set of table toppers to another.

Barcelona are currently five points clear at the top of La Liga after an undefeated start to the season.

Messi himself has scored 13 goals in his 14 league appearances under manager Ernesto Valverde this campaign.

Elsewhere Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos admitted he had “some different opinions” to Cristiano Ronaldo, but insisted their relationship was fine.

Reports of a rift between Ronaldo and Ramos surfaced earlier this season, with Madrid struggling in LaLiga.

But Ramos played that down, saying the pair got along fine albeit with some disagreements.

“Nothing has ever happened between him and me,” the defender told TVE.

“There has always been a great friendship between us.

“We have a lot of personality and have some different opinions, but we’re pulling in the same direction.”

Madrid are fourth in the table through 14 matches, trailing rivals and leaders Barcelona by eight points.

  • Late goal by Silva extends Manchester City’s winning run to 13 games

Late goal by Silva extends Manchester City’s winning run to 13 games

David Silva scored a late goal as runaway English Premier League leaders Manchester City restored their eight-point lead with a 2-1 victory against West Ham United on Sunday.

Silva converted Kevin de Bruyne’s brilliant pass from close range in the 83rd minute as City maintained their blistering form this season and won their 13th successive EPL game.

Nicolas Otamendi had converted substitute Gabriel Jesus’s cross in the 57th minute to equalise, after defender Angelo Ogbonna had headed West Ham into the lead.

It was the most unlikely lead at the end of a first half in which the hosts dominated.

City have not lost a game since April, and face second-place rivals Manchester United next Sunday.

West Ham, who have won only twice all season, sit 19th — three points behind West Bromwich Albion in 17th.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, in his post-match comment, said: “Today was different to (the late winning goal against) Southampton — I did not think that was going to happen.

“But today, since after five minutes in the second half, I felt we were going to score. Our pace and pass were quicker and better. That is why we are so happy — every game is so tough and it is important to keep our momentum.

“We started well but lost our patience and couldn’t find the players in position. They moved too much.

“But you have ups and downs — what is important is that in the second half it was outstanding the way we played.

“It means we have done 39 points in a row. That is a lot. You see how they run and how they fight, that’s why we are so proud again.

“Before next week’s match against Manchester United, we have to travel to Ukraine and after that think about Old Trafford. We are going to try to be who we are,” he said.

West Ham manager David Moyes, on his part, said: “I have to say it was a really good effort. We defended much better today.

“We’ve worked a bit on it. We had one day where we could prepare.

“We needed our goalkeeper to play well. He got both hands to most things. I thought most of it was outside the box. I have to say we did a really good job.

“What a chance we had to make it 2-2 late on. My feeling was I thought we deserved it (to equalise).

“You get results in different ways and it looked as though we might have got one today. Our effort today was top. For long parts of the game, we were in with a chance of getting a result.

Sinan Bytyqi:  Finding opportunity in misfortune

For Sinan Bytyqi, things were going well. The Manchester City starlet, who fled war torn Kosovo with his parents as a baby, was winning rave reviews during a loan spell in Holland.

During his last visit to Manchester, Pep Guardiola had pulled the then 21-year-old aside for a discreet word, wishing him luck and telling him his progress with Go Ahead Eagles was being monitored closely.

One of his close pals in what he was hoping would be a dream come true at the Ethihad was Nigerian ineternational Kelechi Iheanacho, who has since moved on to Leicester City.

After being named in the Eredivisie team of the week, and with thoughts already on returning to City to try and make the breakthrough into the first team, Bytyqi was called into the office of the Dutch club before training.

‘I went in and there was the manager, the coaches, the physios,’ he recalls. ‘I thought “what’s going on here?”. It was weird. The manager pulled out a piece of paper and told me that they had found something on my annual heart monitoring test in Manchester and I had to go back to England.

‘He also said it is the kind of condition that stops you from playing professional sport.’

That devastating sentence was delivered late last year. A second, hastily arranged opinion, in London, confirmed the diagnosis.

Bytyqi had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a disease in which a portion of the heart muscle is enlarged, creating functional impairment of the heart. It is also the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes.

Bytyqi not willing to bid football bye both on and off the pitch, contacted Fergal Harkin, City’s scouting manager. ‘He looked after me while I was on loan,’ he says. ‘He said he was going to build a team and I was welcome to work with him. I wanted to do that because I know how difficult a loan can be.

‘At City you get everything, food, pool, sauna. You go out and you don’t get that. You have to cook your own food. Even the language you don’t understand.’

City, who have kept news of Bytyqi’s playing retirement quiet until this interview with the Mailonline, were as good as their word. On November 2, around a year after diagnosis, he started his new role as loan scout. ‘I watch players, provide reports and try to support them,’ he says.

Bytyqi is no doubt making the best of his new opportunity and deriving joy from it.

‘I can’t change yesterday but I can change tomorrow,’ he says. ‘I go home and cry or I move on.’

Man City seek to consolidate as league action returns

It is done and dusted, or better put signed sealed and delivered! Every nation that ought to have a ticket to Russia 2018 now has it in the kitty as the 32 countries to battle for honour are now all known.

All that is left now if for the various national teams to continue their build up to Russia 2018 and most importantly look forward to would be opponents when the official draw is made December 1.

Is that the end of the story? NO!  Action returns Saturday in the Premier league with the players all back from international duties though not completely 100% as some like Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero had cause to be in the hospital after fainting while away on national assignment with Argentina, a friendly match in Russia against Nigeria that ended in massive defeat for the two time world cup winners.

Aguero who is already back in the City fold is good to go and has been tipped to feature against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday. Man City leads the league table with 31 points in 11 matches and only one thing could possibly be in the mind of the team and technical crew headed by Pep Guardiola, consolidation!

Nigerian international Alex Iwobi was on fire in Russia and scoring in the 4-2 defeat of Argentina in on Tuesday.  No doubt Arsenal will be expecting another 5-star performance from him as Arsenal host Tottenham.  The Gunners are currently out of the top five in the log and a good result Saturday could guarantee upward move.

Manchester United will no doubt be in a hurry to sing victory song on Saturday as they host Newcastle.

With the confirmed return of the trio of Zlatan Ibrahimović, Paul Pogba and Marcos Rojo,Jose Mourinho   appears to have the odds in his favour and the visitors need to be ready for fireworks. Interestingly both Manchester United and Newcastle lost their last matches before the international break to Chelsea and AFC Bournemouth respectively.  Before the international break Liverpool earned a massive away 4-1 win over West Ham. Can they continue the victory song when they host Southampton? The odds appear to say so with Southampton only able to record a win, two draws and two losses in the last five matches.

  • Manchester City not invincible, Wenger insists

Manchester City not invincible, Wenger insists

Manchester City have opened up an eight-point gap at the top of the English Premier League, but Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is not convinced they can have an unbeaten season.

Pep Guardiola’s side have scored 38 goals along the way, prompting some to be predicting an unbeaten season for them.

City have won 10 of their opening 11 games, and only a home draw against Everton in August deprived them of a perfect start.

Their 3-1 win over Arsenal earlier this month extended their winning streak to 15 games in all competitions.

Arsenal are the only team to go unbeaten throughout an entire Premier League season, and that was 2003-04.

When asked whether City could emulate his “Invincibles” the Frenchman said there was still a long way to go.

“They are a good side but they are not an unstoppable side,” Wenger said.

“People always want to predict what will happen in the game.

“I don’t know more than you. Maybe, maybe not, but at the moment only one team has done it”.

Arsenal, who trail City by 12 points in sixth, host Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby on Saturday.

  • Man City posts record £473m revenues

Man City posts record £473m revenues

Manchester City have posted record revenues of £473.4million and a third successive profit as part of their 2016-17 financial report.

It is the first time the club has broken the £400m mark, with this year’s number an increase of 21 per cent on the previous figures.

The club also posted a £1.088m profit, though the club says that figure would have been higher had it not been for a change to their reporting period, aimed at aligning the financial year with the wider City Football Group.

City’s positive results come in spite of the club failing to win any titles last season, and they also remained debt-free.

Club chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak commented: “This report is about making sure our fans and our partners can see the true detailed status of every aspect of the club.

“What hopefully comes across is that the football organisation and off-field business have the right symmetry and balance to allow us to continue to further strengthen and grow.”

Al Mubarak also spoke about City’s academy, which continues to produce talented young players, and he specifically mentioned the promising development of Brahim Diaz and Phil Foden, who recently played a starring role for England in their successful Under-17 World Cup campaign, winning the Golden Ball in the process.

He added: “The ongoing development of Phil Foden and Brahim Diaz, in particular, continues to be encouraging and our commitment to nurture our own talent remains a central pillar for the club’s long-term sustainability.”

Looking forward to the 2017-18 season, the Chairman says that the Club “enters this season with a justifiable sense of ambition and expectation”, a view shared by CEO Ferran Soriano who says that he is “convinced we will see further progress and silverware in the seasons to come.”

He further observes the revenue growth moving “towards the £500m mark” and reiterates the club’s long held position that “on-field success and financial sustainability must exist hand-in-hand.”
