Man City banned for two years from signing under 18

Manchester City were slapped with a ban on signing academy players on Friday after tapping up two schoolboys.

The two-year embargo handed down by the Premier League was the same as Liverpool faced last month, with the second year suspended for three seasons.

But City’s £300,000 fine was three times that of their North West rivals in a case thought to centre on an 11-year-old from Everton and 15-year-old at Wolves.

Sportsmail understands City admitted wrongdoing once evidence was produced to them and will not be appealing the decision, which does not stop them landing targets from abroad.

A third academy transfer was being scrutinised by the Premier League but Louie Moulden – son of former City striker Paul – is free to complete his switch from Liverpool.

City were found to have contacted parents of the players too early in the recruitment process. Liverpool’s violation came by way of offering prohibited inducements to one player and his family.

The younger boy, now 12, will leave City immediately. The 15-year-old is expected to complete his GCSEs at the club’s partnered school, St Bede’s, until the summer of 2018

By registering academy players, clubs acquire the right not to have those players approached.

The club then owes certain obligations and duties to that player under the EPPP regime, such as educational commitments and coaching hours.

A registered academy player, or a player who has a pre-registration agreement, cannot be directly or indirectly approached (or even talked about in public) by another club.

A registered academy player is also prevented from approaching other clubs himself or through his family.

There is, however, nothing to stop a club approaching an unregistered player who is training with an academy.

‘As a result of the club’s breaches, the players’ registrations will be terminated on a specified date, with no compensation rights retained by the club, and the club will not be permitted to re-register them as academy players.

‘Manchester City has offered to pay compensation to each player’s previous club, and maintain educational provision for each player until the completion of his GCSEs.’

City – whose academy has won plaudits after the club moved into a new lavish training complex in 2014 – are understood to remain on the lookout for new talent from across the continent.

Their Under 18 manager Lee Carsley suggested more new faces are set to join, claiming City’s stars of tomorrow are ‘on trial every day’.

‘We’re constantly looking around Europe for better players than what we’ve got,’ Carsley said.

‘As soon as they stop developing and stop learning they become at risk of being replaced. They’re used to it.’

  • Fellaini sent off for headbutt in goalless Manchester derby

Fellaini sent off for headbutt in goalless Manchester derby

Marouane Fellaini was sent off for headbutting Sergio Aguero as Manchester City and Manchester United fought out an attritional goalless draw at Etihad Stadium to leave their hopes of a place in the Premier League’s top four still in the balance.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho will be the happier after they extended their unbeaten league run to 24 games, a feat achieved without Fellaini in the closing stages after he was dismissed for a senseless headbutt on Aguero.

Argentine Aguero came closest for City when he hit the post early on and manager Pep Guardiola was left with an injury concern when keeper Claudio Bravo was taken off on a stretcher after injuring his calf catching a cross in the second half.

City substitute Gabriel Jesus had a later header correctly ruled out for offside as they remain in fourth place, with United a point behind in fifth as both sides have five games remaining.

United had 30.8 percent possession – their lowest figure in a Premier League game since Opta started recording possession in 2003-04.

But Mourinho’s side showed all the qualities that have ensured they have remained unbeaten in the Premier League since October to battle their way to a point here.

United spent much of the game on the back foot and almost the entire second half camped in their own territory, but showed the reserves of resilience, organisation and defiance that compensates for their current lack of stardust.

Michael Carrick provided the solid platform and for the most part City were frustrated, with too many efforts off target or lacking the power to trouble United keeper David de Gea.

United carried real threat in the pace of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial but their midfield lacked the guile to provide the right service.

This result keeps United right in the hunt for the top four as they stand in fifth place, one point behind City and two points behind third-placed Liverpool with a game in hand.

The biggest minus on their night was the crass stupidity of Fellaini, needlessly involved in the incident that saw him thrust his head into the face of Aguero.

This was deja vu for City and Guardiola – so much possession and territory, too little end result.

City created the best chances and effectively spent the second 45 minutes camped in United territory but as on so many occasions this season, including the FA Cup semi-final loss to Arsenal, possession and territory was not turned into scoreline supremacy.

Man United remain unbeaten, hold City despite Fellaini red

Manchester City 0 Manchester United 0

Manchester City missed the chance to move up to third as they were held to a goalless draw by 10-man Manchester United in a disappointing derby at the Etihad Stadium.

The Citizens were on the front foot for much of the contest with Sergio Aguero hitting the post and going close on several occasions.

United had looked dangerous on the counter attack in the early stages through Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, but were forced into a rearguard action throughout the second period as they extended their unbeaten run in the league to 24 games.

The contest struggled to live up to the hype but exploded into life late on as Marouane Fellaini was sent off for headbutting Aguero, before substitute Gabriel Jesus saw a header ruled out for offside on his return from injury.

The point ensures both sides can leapfrog top four rivals Liverpool should they win their respective games in hand. Fourth-placed City are one point adrift of Jurgen Klopp’s side, with United one point further back.

    TALKING POINT

A frustrating night for City, but it was typical Mourinho. Given the balance of play, City will be disappointed they didn’t put some distance between themselves and United in the race for the top four. The Citizens will still be confident they can achieve their target of securing Champions League football next season, while United avoided the defeat that would have handed the advantage back to Liverpool.

Mourinho has his eyes firmly on winning the Europa League, but this was just the type of result the Portuguese masterminds away from home in the big matches. He has built a career on nullifying opponents, and while they didn’t get a winner on the counter attack, he’ll be delighted they have their destiny in their own hands with just five league matches to play.

Seven of the eight red cards in Premier League Manchester derby matches have been given to Manchester United.

There were just 19 seconds between Marouane Fellaini’s first & second cards.

Fellaini was given his third red card in his Premier League career & his first in the competition since May 2015.

  • Manchester derby may be better without referee – Yaya Toure

Manchester derby may be better without referee – Yaya Toure

Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure will prefer to play without a referee in Thursday’s derby with Manchester United in the English Premier League.

The Ivorian said this on Monday while criticising the standard of officiating in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final defeat by Arsenal.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that referee Craig Pawson had ruled out Sergio Aguero’s first-half strike at Wembley.

Replays suggested the goal should have stood and Manchester City went on to lose the game 1-2 after extra time.

“I think the referees have to stop this,” said Toure.

“I am very disappointed. It is not the first time, there have been a couple of times.

“Maybe on Thursday we are going to have a better referee or maybe play without a referee, I would prefer that.”

Officials ruled that Leroy Sane’s cross had gone out of play before reaching Aguero.

The Argentina striker later did score to put Manchester City ahead but goals from Nacho Monreal and Alexis Sanchez sent Arsenal into May’s FA Cup final, where they will meet Chelsea.

Defeat means Manchester City’s focus switches to the Premier League, where they are currently fourth.

But Manchester United will leapfrog them if they win on Thursday.

“It is a very big game, an important game,” added Toure.

“We have to do that job and we will see what can happen. We hope to have a good referee.”

  • Gabriel Jesus set return against Arsenal

Gabriel Jesus set return against Arsenal

Pep Guardiola has revealed that Gabriel Jesus could play for Manchester City in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal just 10 weeks after suffering a broken metatarsal.

The Brazil star was expected to miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery for the injury he sustained at Bournemouth on February 13 in only his fifth game for the club.

But the 20-year-old forward, who was an instant hit following his £27million move from Palmeiras in January, has made a remarkable recovery and will be included in City’s squad for Wembley.

‘He’s really, really much, much better,’ said Guardiola. ‘He will take part in training with us [on Friday]. He’s coming back with his happiness and we are so happy he’s back again.

‘We are going to travel with all the squad to Wembley, all the group, and he will be part of that. After that, we will see.’

Asked if he has ruled out starting Gabriel Jesus against Arsene Wenger’s side, Guardiola added: ‘No. All the squad are travelling down [on Saturday] and we will watch the match between Tottenham and Chelsea. After dinner I will decide the team.’

However, City will definitely be without John Stones who has been ruled out with a muscle injury. The England centre back has an outside chance of being for Thursday’s Manchester derby at the Etihad.

‘He has a muscular injury,’ added Guardiola. ‘It happened one day in a training session. Maybe he come back for United, but I don’t know.

‘Of all the players who are injured I am happy when they come back but especially for him. He had all Europe in his hands and he came here to join us. We cannot forget that. I am so happy he joined us here.

‘He arrived and suddenly can play after just two or three weeks. That’s why we’re so happy he can help us to score goals at the end of the season.’

Guardiola admits that Wembley will always hold a special place in his heart after seeing Barcelona win the European Cup there.

He was a player in the 1990 final when Ronald Koeman’s winner beat Sampdoria in extra-time, and the coach in 2011 when a Lionel Messi inspired Barca overcame Manchester United.

‘Definitely the word Wembley in my life is so important,’ he said. ‘We were able to win the first Champions League (there). Ronald Koeman made a fantastic goal beating Sampdoria and (Roberto) Mancini.

‘The second one we beat one of the best teams in the world in Manchester United at Wembley, and especially the way we played.

‘I will always remember in my heart. It was an outstanding performance in all senses. We played for 25 minutes second half where I will not be able to forget it.

‘That’s why Wembley is an important part of my life. Coming back there will always be special for me.’

Nasri’s lavish mansion sells for £5.75 million

The sprawling mansion of exiled Manchester City star Samir Nasri has been sold for £5.7million.

Nestled in the plush village of Alderley Edge in the Cheshire countryside the ‘unashamedly opulent’ eight-bedroom home even comes with its own nightclub.

Set on a 30-acre private plot, the home opens up into a marble entrance hall with a spiral staircase and floor to ceiling windows.

No footballer’s home would be complete without the obvious trappings of a millionaire’s pad and Nasri’s former property has quite a few ticked off, including a huge wine cellar, a cinema room and gym.

There are also five bathrooms, a study, playroom, and open plan kitchen, as well as a jacuzzi, steam room and a sauna.

After splashing out on their new lavish home, owners could save some cash on taxis to bars by partying the night away in their very own nightclub.

The room boasts a dance floor and bar, as well as a lounge area, with seating around a nine-metre pool for guests to relax.

Outside, the new owners will be able to enjoy their lavish 32-acre gardens and if they happen to own any horses then they are certainly in luck, with three stables and a track to take them for a ride.

There is more than enough space to relax, too, with a summer house, a number of plush terraces and even a private waterfall.

  • Int’l friendly: Fans decry NFF’s inability to broadcast match live

Nigerians on Friday took to twitter to vent their anger for the failure of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and television stations to broadcast live the Super Eagles friendly match against Senegal.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Fenerbahçe striker Moussa Sow opened scoring in the 53rd minute for the Teranga Lions of Senegal.

But Manchester City’s youngster Kelechi Iheanacho, rescued a draw for Nigeria when he struck from the spot in the 81st minute.

Some of the fans who were left fuming after the game also complained about their inability to access a live streaming link which had been shared by some officials of the NFF.

Justice Prince said on his twitter handle that “such a match like Nigeria vs Senegal wasn’t on TV. Africa’s heavyweight. Isokay. Una #wehdone’’

Wilson Jnr said: “It’s pathetic, even Supersports didn’t show our match…#NIG VS SEN’’.

Favour Onyeoziri said: “So, you mean not even one TV station aired the Nigeria vs Senegal match?

“One website even told me to pay N500 to stream the Nigeria vs Senegal match live. After paying, which network will I use to stream? AT&T?”

Oma Akatugba said: “I absolutely enjoyed Nigeria vs Senegal but I didn’t watch it.’’

For Yerekimea Tonbra, “Mr Pinnick just failed his KPI with the Nigeria Vs Senegal match, Nigerians couldn’t watch their national team in action and there was no commentary sef’’.

Attamah Ifeanyi wrote: “I think it is pathetic considering how huge a football-loving nation Nigeria is. Not even a single TV station covered the Nigeria VS Senegal match!’’.

Also, John Raul said: “No one in the most populated country in Africa watched the game! Shame #NGASEN.

Meanwhile, one of the sites platforms which had internet broadcast rights have apologised for its failure to satisfy its clients.

The apology letter on its site read: “Dear esteemed customers, we regret our inability to broadcast the Nigeria vs Senegal football match which was slated for 9 p.m. Nigerian time on March 23, 2017.

“This was as a result of technical hitches experienced in getting the signals to us from our London technical partners.

“Please be assured that full refunds of fees paid on our platform wwwurlivestream.com to watch the match will be paid within the next seven working days.

“Once again, we are really sorry,’’ it said.

  • Liverpool defender Klavan not afraid of Aguero

Liverpool defender Klavan not afraid of Aguero

Ragnar Klavan claimed he does not fear Sergio Aguero ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Manchester City.

Aguero has been in fine form as of late, and has found the back of the net in all four of his Premier League games against Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium.

However, Klavan – who in combination with Dejan Lovren kept Aguero at bay in the reverse fixture at Anfield in December – is looking forward to going head-to-head with the former Atletico Madrid forward once more.

“I think fearful is not the right word,” Klavan told the Liverpool Echo.

“He is a world class striker but a lot of teams in the Premier League have world class strikers so it’s nice to play against them.

“There is always a lot of respect for the strikers I play against but fear is not the word.

“The game [in December] was a great game from our side. For me, the first time to play against Aguero. He is a great striker.

“But from our side it was a really good team effort. We didn’t have so many chances in the game.

“We scored one and we defended really well, also in the second half when there was more pressure in the game, we were defending together and that was the key.

While Klavan has only faced Aguero and City once before, the Estonia defender has experience facing Pep Guardiola’s sides, having featured for Augsburg against Bayern Munich during his time at the Bundesliga club.

“They always want to play really nice, attractive football,” he said of Guardiola sides.

“It was always very clear to see when he was manager of Bayern Munich, but maybe in England it is a little bit different.

“In Bundesliga, Bayern is the best team but in England the league is so equal, I think also in the beginning of the season you have at least six teams who can become champions so it is not so easy here.”

  • Man City announce shirt sleeve sponsor

Man City announce shirt sleeve sponsor

Manchester City have made history by becoming the first Premier League team to announce a shirt sleeve sponsor.

A rule change coming into force next season will allow clubs to have a secondary sponsor on their sleeves.

And on Friday City revealed their partnership with Nexen Tire, a tyre manufacturer from South Korea.

Manager Pep Guardiola was on hand to unveil the new deal, which will see the company’s name feature on the City kit from next summer.

He was joined by injured pair Ilkay Gundogan and Gabriel Jesus, who modelled shirts with the logo on them.

England women’s international Jill Scott was also at the unveiling representing City’s women’s team.

Next year will be the first time Premier League clubs are allowed to advertise on their sleeves, and several teams are expected to take the opportunity.

However there are at least two top-flight clubs who will not be able to participate in the deal for next season, due to current deals with main sponsors banning the appearance of a secondary brand on the kit.

City have not disclosed the financial deal behind the sponsorship, but the space is valued at around a fifth of that of a main kit sponsor. Clubs like Manchester United, who receive £47million-a-year from Chevrolet to be on their shirts, could see a further £10m invested in the club.

City have listed Nexen Tire as their official tyre manufacturer since 2015, but this is the first time their name will appear on the club’s shirts.

‘We are delighted to continue our successful partnership with Nexen Tire,’ said City Chief Executive Ferran Soriano.

Ihenacho plays for 2 minutes in Man City win

It was a two minutes affair for kelechi Ihenacho as Manchester City nailed Middleborough 2-0 to book a place in the semifinal of the FA Cup on Saturday. Visiting City who appeared to be in a hurry to get the job done shot into the lead as early as the 3rd minute thanks to David Silva who got an assist from Raheem Sterling. Sergio Aguero increased the tally in the 67th minute of the match after converting a well-placed offer from Leroy Sané. Man City did not appear to be satisfied with the 2-0 lead as they made attempts to increase the tally further but failed.
Ihenacho who had watched proceedings with rapt attention did not get an opportunity to step into the pitch till the 90th minute when pep Gaudiola gave him the nod as replacement for Aguero. The Nigerian however had only two minutes at his disposal as the final whistle went before anyone could say ‘Jack Robinson’.
