van Gaal ‘dreams’ of beating Manchester City

Louis van Gaal has claimed it would be a “dream” to defeat Manchester City on Sunday and move Manchester United into pole position for the third and final automatic Champions League qualifying spot.

United face Manuel Pellegrini’s team at Old Trafford today aiming to avoid a fifth successive derby defeat against City, knowing that a victory would open up a four-point gap between the two teams.

And Van Gaal admits that a win and consolidating third is the dream scenario ahead of the 169th Manchester derby.

“Of course I dream of it. Every player dreams of victory. I have to think with my staff and my players, already a lot of days, how we have to beat Manchester City.

“You are sitting in that process to win your next opponent. Of course, you want to win because it is a big step in the table also.

“When you win, the third place is reachable, and a month ago nobody thinking about that, besides me, of course.

“That is good because then you are certainly in the Champions League and then we will have done it better than the goal was in the pre-season.”

Did you know Telegraph Sport has a Manchester United Facebook page? Van Gaal confirmed, meanwhile, that Robin van Persie will not start against City, despite ending his seven-week ankle injury lay-off by returning to training this week.

“Van Persie is not fit enough to play,” Van Gaal said. “I also don’t think Luke Shaw is fit enough to play. I cannot say they are not fit, but in my opinion they are not fit to play.

“Most of the players are fit, but fit for me is a different situation, so I don’t think every player is match fit,”Van Gaal said.

Nissan names Manchester City star Brand Ambassador

Nissan has named Manchester City and Ivory Coast midfielder, Yaya Toure as its newest global brand ambassador for the 2015 African Nations Cup (AFCON), holding in Equatorial Guinea early next year.

The three-time African Footballer of the Year and UEFA Champions League winner has agreed to the deal which will see him work alongside Nissan’s global UEFA Champions League and Orange Cup of Nations 2015 partnerships.

Mr Parvir Singh, the Group Managing Director (automobile division), Stallion Motors Limited and Nissan custodian in Nigeria announced the deal at a news brief in Lagos.

He said Toure will as part of the contract be the face of Nissan’s advertising campaign in Africa and play key role at Nissan’s Orange Cup of Nations 2015 sponsorship.

“Toure will also help connect football fans with the Nissan brand and increase excitement around Nissan’s innovative range of products and slogan, ‘Innovation that excites,” he said.

Singh described Toure as a symbol of Africa pride which according to him was one of the reasons the Japanese automaker chose him as Nissan ambassador for the 2015 AFCON tournament.

Toure acknowledged the appointment and was quoted as saying: “I’m proud to be partnering with Nissan across its UEFA Champions League and Orange Cup of Nations 2015 sponsorships. I have been fortunate enough to win lots of trophies in my career, but the Orange African Cup of Nations has always been my target as an African, so I am really looking forward to it and working with Nissan to help bring the excitement around both of these fantastic tournaments to fans around Africa and the rest of the world.”

Chelsea, who finished ahead of Schalke as group winners, will play Paris St-Germain for the second consecutive year, having beaten the French champions in dramatic circumstances in last year’s quarter-finals.

There is added interest in that game as Chelsea sold defender David Luiz to PSG for a reported £40m in the summer.

    Kompany hails City’s contract dealings

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has hailed the club’s close-season contract dealings.

Manuel Pellegrini has added to his ranks with the likes of Bacary Sagna, Fernando, Willy Caballero and Eliaquim Mangala since winning the Premier League crown in May.

However, Kompany believes the new contracts handed to himself, Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Samir Nasri and Aleksandar Kolarov provide City’s squad with a stable and experienced spine.

“It is one thing to make new signings but it is another to make sure we have a core of players who know the league and have enjoyed success in the league – then we can move forward with a certain style and philosophy that has been successful for us,” he is quoted as saying in the British press.

“For me it is important to see quality, new players coming but it is as important to see players like David Silva and Kolarov and Nasri remaining at the club.”

Striker Edin Dzeko is expected to sign a new deal imminently, with coach Pellegrini saying earlier this week: “I don’t think it’s 100 per cent finished – but yes, he will renew his contract.”

City face Liverpool in the Premier League on Monday.

Iheanacho will succeed with City – Yaya Toure

Ivory Coast star, Yaya Toure has tipped Nigerian youngster, Kelechi Iheanacho, to record massive success with Manchester City in future.

The former Golden Eaglets playmaker has impressed with Manchester City in the club’s tour to the United States with Manuel Pellegrini praising the 17-year old’s talents.

Toure, the reigning African Footballer of the Year, has moved to salute the prowess of the Flying Eagles midfielder.

“Kelechi is an exciting player. I love the way he plays and I feel that he will have a good career at the club and go on to become one of the players of the future,” supersport.com quoted Toure as saying on the club’s official website, mcfc.com.

Iheanacho has been impressive for City in pre-season and scored in his senior debut against Kansas City on July 23.

His performance against the MLS side was so impressive that Pellegrini described him as the “future” of the club.

He showed his display against Kansas City was no fluke when he netted his second goal in as many games against AC Milan four days later.

  • Man City plots shock bid for Drogba

Man City plots shock bid for Drogba

Manchester City manager, Manuel Pellegrini, is searching for a new striker after losing Alvaro Negredo to a broken foot, Daily Star reports.

Spanish star Negredo broke his metatarsal and will be sidelined for up to four months, leaving the ex-Real Madrid manager short on attacking options as his champions get set to defend the English Premier League title.

It is understood Pellegrini could turn to former Chelsea star Didier Drogba as he looks to lure a top class hitman to the Etihad Stadium.

Drogba is considering a return to Stamford Bridge after leaving Galatasaray at the end of last season.

He is understood to have a number of options on the table and will make a decision on his future this week.

But Pellegrini believes the 36-year-old could be a viable option on a 12-month contract to improve his striking options now that Negredo is sidelined.

Drogba is a cult-hero at the Blues, but the chance to land a lucrative short-term deal with the reigning champions could tempt the Ivory Coast captain to pick City instead of his old hunting ground.

Iheanacho senior: Why my son signed City’s pre-contract deal

Nigeria Under-17 striker Kelechi Iheanacho has signed a pre-contract with Manchester City according to his father James.

In an interview with Brila FM the player’s father confirmed that he signed a pre-contract with City but with him being 17 years old, a proper contract will be signed when his son turns 18. Only then will they get money from his deal. October 3 is the day when Kelechi turns 18.

“The situation is that Kelechi hasn’t turned 18 yet and until he does, he can’t sign, but what he has done is sign a pre-contract with Manchester City pending his 18th birthday,” James Iheanacho told Brila FM.

He also added that Kelechi left Nigeria to Switzerland for yesterday’s FIFA World Player of the Year award ceremony on invitation from FIFA.

  • Fernandinho silences doubters

    Fernandinho silences doubters

Premier League title chasers have had their share of flops from Brazil but this time have backed a winner with £30 million midfielder

AT first glance, Fernandinho does not come across as a £30 million man. This steady, dependable midfielder does the easy things well for Manchester City; has done, in fact, since joining the club last summer from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Yet that feat, in itself, deserves some praise. Arriving in a strange country where the standards far outstrip Ukraine’s top flight, where the pace of the game can hit newcomers like a sledgehammer, the Brazilian has done remarkably well to adjust so quickly, very few hiccups impeding his progress.

Perversely, that has meant he has not always caught the eye, leading critics to wonder what it is exactly the 28-year-old brings to a team previously featuring the experienced Gareth Barry.

Did City buy the wrong Brazilian? Should they have gone for Paulinho instead? Tottenham Hotspurs’ man, after all, finds a place in the Brazil national squad, perhaps at the expense of his counterpart.

Still time, however, to make amends before the World Cup. Luiz Felipe Scolari, the Brazil manager, cannot ignore developments at the Etihad where the number of doubters is dwindling by the day. Fernandinho’s contributions are now being better appreciated, partly thanks to a few recent goals. A brace against Arsenal was followed on Wednesday by a powerful drive at Swansea City that opened the scoring in City’s 3-1 win.

The sweet strike illustrated the player’s growing confidence. Moving on to a poor clearance after a corner, Fernandinho attacked the ball with real purpose and intent to set the tone for an important performance from a side that had previously struggled away from home.

Sat next to Yaya Toure, as he has done for most of this season, Fernandinho worked with his brain as well as his legs to try and combat Swansea’s extra man in that part of the field.

That challenge, in actual fact, must have tested his stamina to the limit seeing as his manager Manuel Pellegrini has asked the player to start every game over Christmas.

No rest for someone unfamiliar with this country’s peculiar traditions, someone more used to putting his feet up at this time of year. You would not know it though as Fernandinho battled through the wind and rain for the full 90 minutes.

In his favour, City’s No 25 does not have to try anything spectacular, not when so many around him are more than capable of that. David Silva, Samir Nasri, Sergio Agüero, Alvaro Negredo and Toure they can be left to produce the fireworks. For their more understated team-mate, it is about getting it and giving it, passing and moving a simple equation for the new man.

Importantly, Fernandinho seems happy with that. Having avoided injury, having steered clear of too many bookings, he has been granted a run in the side which now sees him looking totally at home.

Alongside, Toure must be delighted because the security offered by his new partner brings out the best in the big Ivorian. Enjoying a much better time than last term, Touré’s 12 goals must be partly attributed to the natural chemistry between the pair. Fernandinho’s caution grants Touré more freedom, spelling bad news for any opponent.

That also goes for teams facing City these days. Pellegrini’s side are looking ominously strong, with several match winners crucially supported by a central midfield that takes some beating.

After winning 11 major trophies with Shakhtar over eight years, Fernandinho is certainly no stranger to success. But this would be different. Should City end up winning the Premier League, the achievement would surely be ranked as his best.

A lad, who left home at 17 to pursue a career, has shown great fortitude over the years. Any City fan fearing another Brazilian flop, following in the footsteps of Robinho and Jo, can now rest easy. Fernandinho is not the type to let anyone down.

  • Iheanacho’s Manchester City move back on track

Iheanacho’s Manchester City move back on track

Kelechi Iheanacho’s transfer to Manchester City is back on track after it looked like it had collapsed over a delayed payment.

MTNFootball.com reveals that agents working on the move to the EPL side for the FIFA U-17 World Cup MVP are now working on getting the player and father to England for a meeting to address “some vexed issues.”

“Both the agents in the United States and those in London are now co-operating to get visas to the United Kingdom for the Iheanachos so that they meet with Manchester City officials on the contract they have signed,” a top source informed MTNFootball.com

“You could therefore say the transfer is back on track,” he added.

Issues to be discussed would include the January 2015 payments to the player, his father and the Taye Football Academy in Owerri.
