EPL: Some of The Things You Might Have Missed

English Premier League on Saturday was action pact as expected as 17 goals were recorded from the seven matches that were played.

Incase you missed the matches including the star match of the day at Stamford Bridge in the game against Pep Guardiola’s side, read below some of the things you might have missed.

    Chelsea 0 – 1 Manchester City

    OPTA FACT

    • Kevin De Bruyne has scored nine of his last 11 Man City goals from outside the box, including each of the last four.

A game which didn’t quite live up to its billing – not helped, of course, by Alvaro Morata limping off in the first-half with a hamstring injury. After a goalless first-half, Manchester City’s control greatly increased and Pep Guardiola’s playmakers began to make deep incisions into a shuffled Chelsea’s defence.

When Kevin De Bruyne eventually gave the visitors the lead, after a well-timed pass from Gabriel Jesus and scything move, it was a goal they thoroughly deserved. And, ultimately, it was an advantage they protected well: Chelsea mounted a vague response, but all the best chances in the remainder of the game fell to City.

Saturday’s round-up, as Tottenham run over Huddersfield and Manchester United continue to click through the gears.

    Huddersfield 0 – 4 Tottenham

    OPTA FACT

    • Harry Kane now has 13 goals for club & country in September 2017; his best ever goal tally in a single month of his career.

A real lesson. Huddersfield have begun Premier League life well, but this was not David Wagner’s best day: Huddersfield played into Tottenham’s hands, got caught too high up the field three times inside the first half-hour and conceded as many goals in the first half as they had in their previous six games.

Spurs spent most of the second half well within their comfort zone, but two goals from Harry Kane (who is now just 14 goals short of Teddy Sheringham’s Premier League record for the club) and Ben Davies capped a performance in which they played some of their brightest football of the season. Moussa Sissoko added a fourth from close range in second-half stoppage-time.

    Goals: Kane 10′, 23′, Davies 16′, Sissoko 90′

    Bournemouth 0 – 0 Leicester

Bournemouth certainly started like a side determined pull out of the relegation zone before the international break. Jermain Defoe had the clearest opportunity, but slammed his shot against the crossbar. Eddie Howe’s team were the better of the two and certainly posed the tougher questions but, oddly for two teams who don’t exactly specialise in clean sheets, this proved a stalemate.

    Goals: *Tumbleweed*

    Manchester United 4 – 0 Crystal Palace

    OPTA FACT

    • This is the first time that Marcus Rashford has assisted two goals in a single game for Man Utd.

Exactly the start here that Palace didn’t want. Only three minutes had passed when Marcus Rashford knotted up Joel Ward before setting up Juan Mata to open the scoring. Ten minutes before the break, an impressive Manchester United performance was further rewarded by their second, Fellaini scoring after good work from Ashley Young. Fellaini would double his tally just after half-time and Romelu Lukaku scored a late fourth for his seventh goal in as many games.

    Goals: Mata 3′, Fellaini 35′ & 48′, Lukaku 86′

    Stoke 2 – 1 Southampton

    OPTA FACT

    • Saido Berahino is now without a goal in 31 hours & 23 minutes of Premier League football (Stoke & WBA combined).

Stoke have quietly begun to go off the boil, having not won a Premier League game since beating Arsenal in August and having not led in any game at all since their 4-0 win over Rochdale in the League Cup. Mame Diouf gave them the lead here, heading in Xherdan Shaqiri’s corner on 40 minutes.

It wasn’t all good news in the first half, though, as there was still time for Saido Berahino to miss a penalty. His wait for a first Stoke goal continues. Fifteen minutes before time, Maya Yoshida acrobatically converted Shane Long’s flick to score only Southampton’s second goal away from home this season. Peter Crouch would have the last word, though, scoring late against his old side to win Mark Hughes three overdue points.

    Goals: Diouf 40′, Crouch 85′- Yoshida 75′

    West Brom 2- 2 Watford

    OPTA FACT

    • Abdoulaye Doucouré has scored 3 goals in his last 7 league games, as many as in his previous 57.

Despite losing, Tony Pulis would have been greatly encouraged by the improvement he saw in his side last Monday at Arsenal and West Brom initially built on that here, scoring twice in three first-half minutes through Salomon Rondon and Jonny Evans. A first goal of the season for each and the first time since May 2017 that Pulis’s team had scored more than one in a game. Abdoulaye Doucoure pulled one back before the interval and then late, late into second-half injury time, Richarlison headed in Jose Holebas’s free-kick to steal a point.

    GoalsRondon 18′, Evans 21′ – Doucoure 37′, Richarlison 90′

    West Ham 1 – 0 Swansea

    OPTA FACT

    • Swansea have never kept an away clean sheet at West Ham, conceding 75 goals in 32 games in all comps (W2 D7 L23).

Not a first half that gave anybody great reason for cheer; these really are two sides struggling for confidence. It didn’t really improve in the second period, either, and this game – if anyone chooses to remember it at all – become more notable for Slaven Bilic’s curious substitutions; Javier Hernandez’s withdrawal, in particular, proved unpopular with the home fans.

Still, West Ham mounted a late siege and, after Andy Carroll had hit the bar minutes earlier, Diafra Sakho (remember him?) finished well to snatch the points. A relief for the home fans, less so the ones who (quite understandably) decided to leave early.

    Goals: Sakho ’90

  • Lukaku to continue leading Manchester United- Mourinho

Lukaku to continue leading Manchester United- Mourinho

Romelu Lukaku has started all of Manchester United’s games in the Premier League and Champions League but the Belgian striker cannot expect a break just yet, manager Jose Mourinho has said.

Lukaku has hit the ground running since signing from Everton in the off-season with six league goals in as many games.

He has also netted three times in European competitions as United have barely missed the injured Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Mourinho, who hailed Lukaku’s development since last working with the player during their time at Chelsea, said Lukaku must continue leading United’s line until Ibrahimovic’s return.

“Without Zlatan, we cannot rotate the striker, especially because Marcus Rashford is playing also in other positions,” Mourinho told the club’s website (www.manutd.com).

“So, until the moment we have Zlatan, we cannot think about giving rest to our number nine, the same way we give (rest) in other positions. We cannot do that.”

Ibrahimovic scored 28 goals in 46 appearances for the club last season but injured his knee ligament in the 2-1 Europa League win over Anderlecht in May.

The 35-year-old signed a one-year contract in the close season after surgery, but is not expected to return before the end of the year

The Portuguese manager said Lukaku had taken his opportunities well.

“I don’t want to speak about this progress. If I do that, it looks like we did something extraordinary in three months that he doesn’t have in the remaining years of his career,” said Mourinho.

“I don’t think it’s fair. It’s just a global evolution; I think every step in his career, he got it, grabbed it with both hands.

“It was always his dream to come to this level and since he’s arrived, I don’t think he thinks another thing other than success.”

The manager said Lukaku was coping well with the pressure of playing for the 20-times league champions.

United, who are on 16 points from six games on the back of Lukaku’s fine finishing, host Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday.

Mourinho gets court date in tax-fraud case

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho will appear at a Spanish court to answer allegations of tax fraud on November 3, just two days before his side face his former club Chelsea in the Premier League.

Mourinho, who denies wrongdoing, has been summoned to Pozuelo de Alarcon in Madrid at 10:00 local time (09:00 GMT) on that date, which will come as United prepare for their November 5 trip to Stamford Bridge in the Premier League.

The 54-year-old is accused by a Spanish regional prosecutor of defrauding tax authorities to the tune of €3.3million, relating to image rights in the calendar years 2011 and 2012 during his three seasons in charge of Real Madrid.

After being accused in June, Mourinho released a statement through his agent Jorge Mendes’ company Gestifute to stress that he is “in compliance” with all his obligations, having previously settled another claim against him with Spain’s tax authorities.

Gestifute’s statement at the time read: “Jose Mourinho, who lived in Spain from June 2010 until May 2013, paid more than €26 million in taxes, with an average tax rate over 41 per cent, and accepted the regularisation proposals made by the Spanish tax authorities in 2015 regarding the years of 2011 and 2012 and entered into a settlement agreement regarding 2013.

“The Spanish government in turn, through the tax department, issued a certificate in which it attested that he regularised his position and was in compliance with all his tax obligations.”

  • Man U fans insists on Lukaku penis chant

Man U fans insists on Lukaku penis chant

Manchester United fans were heard singing the controversial chant involving Romelu Lukaku during their side’s game at Southampton Saturday afternoon, with Lukaku scoring the only goal of the match.

Anti-discrimination group Kick It Out this week claimed that the chant, which suggests that Lukaku has “a 24-inch penis”, is “offensive and discriminatory” for using the ethnic stereotype that black men have large penises.

“We have contacted Manchester United regarding the issue and will be working closely with them and The FA to ensure that it is addressed swiftly. If we receive any reports relating to the discriminatory chant, those will be passed on to the governing body and the perpetrators can expect to face punishment.”

United, stated via their official Twitter account this week: “We remind fans of our commitment to ensuring Old Trafford remains inclusive for all. Action will be taken against any offensive behavior.”

Lukaku issued a similar message to supporters, saying: “Great backing since I joined MUFC. Fans have meant well with their songs but let’s move on together.”

The ‘MUFC Songs and Chants’ supporter group declared that they would continue singing the chant unless ordered to stop, reasoning that it is “not a negative chant”, but then Lukaku himself called upon fans to “move on”.

The chant was once again heard from the away end at St Mary’s this afternoon, however, after Lukaku opened the scoring for his side with 20 minutes played.

The song was followed up by the chant: “We’re Man United; we’ll sing what we want.”

Southampton in the closing minutes of the match came out smoking but Manchester United stood their ground to win as they whistle went in the 94th minute. Manchester United coach Jose Mourinho was however sent off the technical bench just before final whistle.  Lukaku has already scored six goals in six games so far.

  • Tevez playing below par says Shanghai Shenhua

Tevez playing below par says Shanghai Shenhua

Shanghai Shenhua chairman Wu Xiaohui admitted Carlos Tevez has not met expectations in the Chinese Super League as the Argentinean and club’s struggles continue.

Former Manchester United and Juventus forward Tevez has been heavily criticised for his performances and fitness as Shenhua languish close to the relegation zone amid his reported weekly salary of £615,000.

The 33-year-old – who has been booed by his own fans and warned to lose weight by new head coach Wu Jingui following Gus Poyet’s resignation – scored only his third goal of the season in Shenhua’s embarrassing 6-1 rout to city rivals Shanghai SIPG last week, which extended the club’s losing streak to five consecutive games.

Under-fire Wu conceded the season has not gone according to plan, for big-spending Shenhua and star recruit Tevez.

“Our intention was to bring in an influential star player with high quality, and we all think Tevez could fit the bill,” Wu told Shanghai TV.

“However, due to a lack of winter training and match-fitness, he didn’t meet our expectations.”

Shenhua are 12th in the 16-time CSL, seven points clear of the drop zone with just six wins from 24 matches so far.

“Every team has peaks and troughs,” Wu added, “but of course I understand results are most important in competitive sports.

“I heard what everybody said about the club hierarchy. They can rest assured that, as the chairman, I will take full responsibility if we indeed make mistakes or don’t do good enough.

“And I’d like to say — for the record — that if anybody can do a better job than us, we would vacate our offices at any time. We have no problem with that.

“We would quit as long as it is in the best interest of Shenhua. We are not driven by self-interest. Not in the slightest!”

  • Valencia Scores Screamer in Man United 4-0 Everton Win

Valencia Scores Screamer in Man United 4-0 Everton Win

Antonio Valencia scored a stunning goal in the Manchester United 4-0 win against Everton on Sunday.

United took the lead when Antonio Valencia produced a superb strike from the edge of the area on four minutes, connecting with Nemanja Matic’s pass on the bounce to power the ball past Jordan Pickford.

They should have doubled their lead on 26 minutes, but Lukaku somehow missed the target from close range.

Wayne Rooney, returning to Old Trafford, threatened an equaliser in the first half when he dragged a shot wide, and he forced David De Gea into a save soon after the break.

They went close again just after the hour mark when Gylfi Sigurdsson got an effort away from close range, but De Gea was again equal to it.

Juan Mata then won a free kick on the edge of the area and stepped up to rattle the post.

United eventually increased the lead in the 83rd minute, shortly after Rooney had been substituted, as Lukaku set up Henrikh Mkhitaryan to slot home.

Lukaku was able to add his name to the scoresheet in the 90th minute when the ball came back into his path after he had struck a free kick into the wall.

Substitute Anthony Martial then added a fourth from the penalty spot after Morgan Schneiderlin’s handball to give United an equal record to league leaders Manchester City.

    • Martial converted from the spot to give Manchester united the 4-0 lead at full time.
    • Lukaku scored the third goal for Manchester United in the 89th minute.
    • Mkhitaryan scored the second goal in the 83rd minutes.
    • Antonio Valencial scored the first goal.

    Kick off time; 4pm

Before the match all eyes were on Wayne Rooney and Romelu Lukaku as they returned to their respective previous clubs in the Manchester united and Everton Match.

Rooney returned to the  Old Trafford for the first time this season while Romelu Lukaku, leading scorer for United this season, faced his former club for the first time.

On the surface, it would be an easy outing for Manchester United as Everton have won just one out of four matches in the league and United have been extremely convincing.

However for the Red Devils, a notable absentee is Paul Pogba who is out with an injury for the next few weeks.

Everton was defeated by Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea after managing to draw against Manchester City 1-1. United, on the other hand, started the season brilliantly with three wins before a surprise draw against Stoke City last weekend.

Everton outscored a United that were all too obstructed in attack last season, only for Jose Mourinho’s team to suddenly become so fluent just as Ronald Koeman’s become so painfully slow. As the focal points of their teams, it would be impossible not to focus on Rooney and Lukaku in this regard.

For one thing, Rooney has actually been one of Everton’s few sources of sharpness this season. One of the reasons for that is evidently his personal response to the obvious blow to the ego that getting dropped and discarded by United was.

  • United’s Mourinho eyes first Super Cup win in Real reunion

United’s Mourinho eyes first Super Cup win in Real reunion

Manchester United’s Jose Mourinho can collect the one European trophy he lacks when his side face Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup on Tuesday.

This will be his first competitive meeting with the Spanish giants since an acrimonious split in 2013.

Mourinho won the Europa League last season to salvage an otherwise disappointing first campaign under the Portuguese.

During his stint in Spain, he had led Real to the Liga title with a record 100 points and won a King’s Cup in an eventful stay between 2010 and 2013.

His achievements at the Santiago Bernabeu were overshadowed, however, by his falling out with key dressing room figures such as Sergio Ramos and Iker Casillas.

He also had confrontations with referees and opponents plus a failure to win the Champions League as Real lost in the semifinals each year.

Mourinho’s legacy has been upstaged by the Spanish club’s three Champions League triumphs in the four years since his departure.

Although in a recent interview the Portuguese claimed he had “to beg” Real’s board to let him leave for Chelsea.

Champions League holders Real will be without talisman and former United forward Cristiano Ronaldo in Skopje, Macedonia as the Portugal international was allowed to report late for pre-season training after he played in the Confederations Cup.

Zinedine Zidane’s side beat Sevilla 3-2 in extra-time last year to win the showcase match.

The French coach is targeting a fourth European trophy in less than two years in charge of Real, which would match Mourinho’s tally of continental titles.

United, meanwhile, will be missing central defenders Eric Bailly and Phil Jones, due to suspension, opening up a place in the starting lineup for new recruit Victor Lindelof.

The Swede is one of three signings made so far by United, along with Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku and midfield anchorman Nemanja Matic.

They arrived at a combined cost of 146 million pounds ($190.34 million) as the Old Trafford side looks to improve on a disappointing sixth-placed Premier League finish last term.

Real have added promising youngsters Theo Hernandez and Dani Ceballos to their talent-packed squad which won a Liga and Champions League double last season, while parting ways with forwards Alvaro Morata and James Rodriguez.

Their reported interest in French teenage sensation Kylian Mbappe has yet to materialise, however.

United beat Real on penalties after a 1-1 draw in a friendly in California last month and won five of their other pre-season games, losing only to Barcelona.

Real, meanwhile, failed to win any of their four friendlies in the United States in 90 minutes.

They lost 3-2 to Barca and got thrashed 4-1 by Manchester City, their only win came in a shoot-out victory over an MLS All-Stars team.

“The sensation overall is not good, when you don’t win any of your four games something is wrong,” Zidane told reporters after the tour.

“We have to do a lot more, we’ve made a bad start with these results and what we all want is to get home, rest and think about the Super Cup.”

Mata woos players launches operation 1% to charity

Manchester United attacking midfielder Juan Mata has called on professional players   across the globe to key into charity of touching lives even as he vowed on Friday to donate one percent of his salary to charity.

The Spain international, 29, has signed up to a scheme called Common Goal created by streetfootballworld, a group of 120 charities from 80 countries.

“What we’re trying to do is define a shared social agenda for football. Common Goal goes beyond individual brands and egos to deliver a greater impact,” Mata said.

“By making the pledge, we can form a lasting connection between football as a business and football as a tool for social change.”

Common Goal is aiming to assemble a ‘starting XI’ of players prepared to commit one percent of their earnings, with the ultimate aim of securing one percent of revenue from the entire football industry.

“One of the first lessons I learned in football is that it takes a team to win a game,” Mata added in an article on the Players’ Tribune website. “I urge my fellow players to get involved.”

Manchester United Bus Clamped in Dublin

One fan has caused confusion after attaching a clamp to the Manchester United team bus as it was left parked up in Dublin outside The Marker Hotel.

A picture circulated on social media on Wednesday of a man appearing to attach a wheel clamp to United’s team coach, prompting social media to react in dismay.

The image led to Twitter users raising concerns over why United’s bus was clamped before it was later revealed to be a prank.

One United supporters account tweeted: ‘Man Utd team bus got clamped in Dublin today Bet you it was a scouser’ while Jack McCormack said: ‘Only in Ireland would the Manchester United team bus get clamped’.

Fortunately for United supporters, the bus was free to travel to the Aviva Stadium ahead of their final pre-season clash against Sampdoria.

The match could see Nemanja Matic make his first appearance for the Red Devils since completing a £40million transfer from Chelsea on Monday.

United are rounding off a busy pre-season schedule in which they have faced the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester City and Barcelona during their tour of America.

They then travelled to Norway’s capital Oslo where they beat Norwegian outfit Valerenga 3-0 before this trip to Dublin.

Jose Mourinho’s side will face Real Madrid in the European Super Cup final in Macedonia on August 8 before they begin their Premier League campaign with a home clash against West Ham on August 13.

  • Determined Ibrah takes to free style in recovery bid

Determined Ibrah takes to free style in recovery bid

After suffering a serious knee injury which ended his Manchester United career towards the end of last season, most thought it would be many months before Zlatan Ibrahimovic was seen kicking a ball again.
However, despite suffering ligament damage in April, the striker has been filmed kicking a ball once again as he looks to recover and return to playing.
He did look rusty, however, as his keepy-up abilities were put to shame by a freestyler in videos posted to Instagram
Ibrahimovic took on trickster Tobias Becs in Stockholm, and was certainly left impressed with the skills on display.
Becs demonstrated the full range, with keepy-ups, round the worlds, and headers, before doing a handstand with the ball balanced on the sole of his shoe, to which Zlatan could only applaud.
The former Sweden international then had a go himself, but looked to be lacking his usual sharpness, struggling initially to get the ball under control before losing it after a mistimed heel flick.
Despite besting Sweden’s record goalscorer however, Becs seemed starstruck, posing for a picture with the forward and describing him as a ‘legend’ on social media.
Becs wrote of Zlatan, who is currently without a club after leaving United: ‘Not only a great football player, but also a great person.’
Despite his injury Zlatan is being linked with a number of clubs, with former employers AC Milan the latest to enter the race for his signature. A return to Old Trafford has however not been completely ruled out either.
