AFCON Final: Legends hail ‘Incredible’ Mane for saving African football

    • Oliseh, Ighalo, Amokachi speak

Notable former Nigerian international players, including former Super Eagles captain and coach Sunday Oliseh, as well as Daniel Amokachi and Odion Ighalo, have hailed the extraordinary role Sadio Mane played in ‘saving the face of African football’ during Sunday’s ill-tempered 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Final between Senegal and hosts Morocco.

The match nearly reached a breaking point after Senegalese players, with encouragement from coach Pape Thiaw, stormed off in protest following a VAR decision to award Morocco a penalty for a tug on striker Brahim Diaz’s shoulder. The match was delayed around 15 minutes before the Teranga Lions returned, courtesy of Mane’s spirited intervention.

Though Diaz later squandered the resultant penalty kick and Pape Gueye struck the solitary winner in extra time to secure a second-ever AFCON crown for Senegal after a hugely controversial end to regular time, the majority agreed that the hero of the night was none other than the former Liverpool and Bayern star who pulled his teammates back onto the pitch.

“Sadio Mane saved the face of African football, and he’s a man who stood out. He took all his teammates back onto the field to continue the game,” Ighalo said on SuperSport after Mane was deservedly named Player of the Tournament. “He deserves to win that trophy, and he deserves the captain’s armband.”

But Oliseh, a member of the influential International Football Association Board (IFAB) who was doing colour commentary for the highly disputed match, was more forthcoming. Apart from heaping praise on Mane, Oliseh condemned the show of shame by the Teranga Lions towards the end of the match.

“This is why Sadio Mané is loved worldwide, because of his intelligence and the ability to stay calm,” Oliseh said. “This is a man who has been through a lot of challenges in his playing career. I think Sadio Mané is a hero; he’s an example that people should imitate. His teammates are coming back onto the pitch.

“But if the referee blows for a penalty, the rule states you have to respect the decision. Furthermore, the penalty has not been scored yet.”

Speaking in the same vein, Amokachi and former Morocco international Hassan Kachloul, in separate interviews, spoke glowingly about Mane yet again.

“Mane went the extra mile to get his team back and it has paid off,” Amokachi told BBC World Service. “What an ambassador for football he is. We know the kind of person he is off the pitch and he knows what football is all about.”

Kachloul, who played for Morocco at the USA 1994 World Cup, quipped: “African football and world football were losing” until Mane intervened.

“What I like more than anything, the only player from the Senegalese team was Sadio Mane.

“That shows the great man he is. He went back to the dressing room and brought those players back. Mane was the man to bring them back on,” he told E4.

Yet the ‘Big Man’ Mane has equally shed light on his decision on the night when his teammates were losing their heads.

“Football is something special, the world was watching, the world loves football and I think football is a pleasure so we have to give a good image for football,” Mane told the BBC. “I think it would be crazy to not play this game because what, the referee gave a penalty and we go out of the game?

“I think that would be the worst thing especially in African football. I’d rather lose than this kind of thing happen to our football.

“I think it’s really bad. Football should not stop for even ten minutes but what can we do? We have to accept that we did but the good thing is that we came back and we played the game and what happened, happened.”

Senegal coach Pape Thiaw says he hopes Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations final against hosts Morocco will not be Sadio Mané’s last appearance at the tournament, insisting the national icon is far from finished.

Speaking in Rabat on the eve of the decider, Thiaw dismissed Mané’s suggestion that this year’s competition could be his final Afcon.

“His decision is no longer up to him,” Thiaw said. “There is an entire nation behind him, and they want to see him continue.”

Mané, 33, hinted after scoring the winner in Wednesday’s semifinal against Egypt that he would not feature at another Afcon. His remarks also suggested he may retire from international football after the 2026 World Cup in North America, when he will be 34.

The next Afcon will be staged in 2027 across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

“I think he made the comments in the heat of the moment,” Thiaw added. “The country does not agree, and as the national team coach, I do not agree at all. We want to keep him as long as possible.”

Mané, twice crowned African Player of the Year, guided Senegal to their first Afcon title in 2022, converting the decisive penalty in the final against Egypt. He also featured in the 2019 showpiece, making Sunday Senegal’s third final in four editions.

“Sadio is an exceptional player who would have deserved to win a Ballon d’Or,” defender Moussa Niakhate said. “More importantly, he is an incredible person — humble, hard working, and devoted to his country. Playing in six Afcon tournaments shows his consistency and longevity.

Mali vs. Senegal: Mane admits best teams don’t win AFCON

As a keenly anticipated fixture at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations this week, Senegal and Mali will do battle in the Quarter-finals of the showpiece at Grand Stade de Tanger on this evening. Kick-off is at 5:00pm Nigerian time.

The Eagles advanced to the quarter-finals of the tournament following a 3-2 penalties victory over Tunisia at Stade Mohammed V last Saturday.

While the game ended at 1-1 in regulation time, penalties were needed to separate the two nations following 120 minutes of football in Casablanca. However, crucial misses by Elias Achouri and Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane gave Mali the opportunity to book their spot in the final eight.

The Lions of Teranga had it much easier in their respective Round of 16 obligation when they bagged a 3-1 win over Sudan at Stade de Tanger this past Saturday. Sudan took an early lead by Aamir Yunis in the sixth minute of the match, which injected a sense of urgency by Senegal as Pape Gueye (2) and Ibrahim Mbaye scored the winning goals for their nation.

Speaking after Senegal’s Round of 16 victory, experienced star Sadio Mane believes that approaching each game as it comes will be crucial in their bid to win the showpiece for the second time.

“In Africa, there are national teams that are candidates to win the title, and I believe we are among them, but with my experience I always tell the players to remain calm no matter what happens, because the best team does not always win this tournament,” Mane uttered.

“The proof is that we played well more than once and saw the results in the end. Playing well is important, but it is not the most important thing at the moment.

“What matters now is focus and dealing with the tournament match by match, because the Africa Cup of Nations is not easy, and what matters is winning, not how.”

Morocco 2025: Mane secures Senegal ticket as Ghana face uphill battle

A 96th-minute winner from Sadio Mane earned Senegal a 1-0 win over Malawi and a place at the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco next year, but Ghana are in serious danger of missing out after Tuesday’s  surprise loss to Sudan.

Senegal had 30 attempts at goal against their hosts but it took until the final seconds for Mane to seal victory with a 25-yard free-kick that curled around the wall and into the bottom corner of the net.

The 2021 winners, who recently parted ways with long-time coach Aliou Cisse, join Burkina Faso as the qualified nations from Group L in the 24-team finals with two more matches to play in the November international window.

Ghana slumped to a 2-0 loss against Sudan in neutral Libya as Ahmed Al-Tash and Mohamed Abdel Rahman scored within three minutes of each other in the second half.

Mane marries ‘prayerful’ heartthrob ahead of AFCON defence

Sadio Mane has married his ’18-year-old long term girlfriend’ Aisha Tamba in a private ceremony in his home country of Senegal.

The wedding took place on January 7 in Keur Massar, an area in the capital city of Dakar, just six days before the start of the Africa Cup of Nations on January 13, according to Business Day.

The event was said to be attended by family, friends and fellow footballers.

Reports from Pulse Sports claimed Aisha ‘was long intended for the 31-year-old footballer since her teenage years’ though it is not known exactly how long they have been dating. The legal age of consent in Senegal is 16 years of age.

The outlet also said the ex-Liverpool star had taken care of her bills when she was in school.

The couple share the same religion, Islam, and are both said to be private people.

Photos of the wedding have been published on Instagram by photography company @Magvision_Evens_Officiel, showing Mane and his wife, who grew up in the Casamance area of Senegal, holding hands and posing after the ceremony.

One image shows the pair sitting below a display of roses, with the words ‘Mrs Mane’ imprinted on the wall.

The wedding photos show Aisha wearing a mermaid-style intricate, fitted, lace dress, with long sleeves and a silky veil.

Other photos show a second outfit – a silk white top and skirt combo, which she has teamed with a chunky gold necklace and earrings. The bride also has henna on both hands.

Mane is seen wearing traditional Senegalese dress in the pictures.

During his time at Liverpool, Mane had not publicly announced any relationships and had kept Aisha a secret.

Back in 2022, he had however spoken out on the type of person that he would marry.

“I’ve seen a lot of girls asking me why I am not married, but sorry you might be wasting your time. The woman I marry will not be on social networks,” Mane said according to Tribune.

“I want to marry a woman who respects God and prays well. Everyone has their own way of making their choice of love,” Mane added.

Mane acquires majority stake in French club

Senegal forward Sadio Mane has made a significant investment in the French football club Bourges Foot 18, acquiring a majority stake.

The acquisition is seen as a move to support young players from Senegal in their journey to top-level football. Mané, who is 31 years old, has expressed interest in investing in a football club for some time, and his close relationship with the former president of Bourges Foot 18, Cheikh Sylla, played a crucial role in his decision to invest. Cheikh Sylla will continue as the club’s president.

Mané has reportedly  contributed funds to assist the club in player recruitment during the last summer’s transfer window. Bourges Foot 18, located 250 kilometres from Paris in central France, has historically competed in the lower divisions of French football and has never played in a higher division than the French second division. Currently, the club is positioned second from the bottom in Group B of the Championnat National.

Mané enjoyed a highly successful career at Liverpool, winning six trophies during his time at Anfield, including the UEFA Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020.

Presently, he is playing for Al Nassr in the Saudi Arabia Pro League, where he has made a great impact, scoring six goals in 10 games since joining the club in August 2023 from German champions Bayern Munich.

Mané’s investment in Bourges Foot 18 demonstrates his commitment to the development of football, particularly for young talent in Senegal.
