  • Banditry: Katsina donates 12 vehicles to Police

    As part of measures to tackle armed bandits and other violent criminal elements currently terrorizing Katsina state, the state government on Wednesday donated 12 vehicles to the Nigeria Police Force.

    The Inspector General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu who said the present security challenges could be won, directed the men of the Police Special Forces and other Tactical Units currently deployed in Katsina State to deal decisively with those terrorizing innocent citizens in the State.

    The Force Spokesman, DCP Frank Mba in statement in Abuja said the IGP gave the charge on Wednesday while addressing the combined Teams of Police Operatives at the Katsina Police Command Headquarters in continuation of his operational tour of the North Central and North Western States.

    The IGP while admitting the obvious security challenges facing the nation at different fronts, insisted that the security challenges are not insurmountable.

    He also assured that everything humanly and operationally possible is being done towards bringing a permanent end to incidences of armed banditry and other crimes in the country.

    The IGP had earlier paid a courtesy call on Katsina Governor, Aminu Masari, where he sought his support in the renewed fight against criminal elements.

    Responding, Masari who was represented by his Deputy, Alh. Mannir Yakubu, pledged full support of the State Government and the Citizens to ‘Operation Puff Adder’ and other security initiatives of the Nigeria Police Force.

    The Operation also got a boost in its operational asset as the State Government made a donation of 12 Toyota Hilux vans to the Police in the aid of the mission.

    Mba also stated that the IGP also visited the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdulmumini Usman, where he sought his cooperation and other traditional authorities in the fight against criminals.

  • Katsina, Niger Republic reach agreement on border crimes

    The Katsina State Government and the Republic of Niger, particularly, Maradi Region, have signed a three-year bilateral work plan agreement that would help check activities of criminals operating along their common border corridors.

    The agreement is also aimed at boosting commerce with particular attention to agriculture, sector of which many people from both areas depend on as source of livelihood.

    The governor of Maradi, Engr. Zakari Oumar while speaking on Thurday during the flag-off held at Sir Usman Nagogo Polo Play Ground, Katsina, said part of the agreement would see to collaborations through information exchange between the two governments, to tackle activities of suspected criminals at the borders.

    He identified clashes between herdsmen and farmers, as one problem the agreement would help address.

    He said ‘’ states like Sokoto, Jigawa and Zamfara along others sharing common border with Niger Republic, have also indicated interest in entering into similar agreements to ensure security in their areas’’.

    The regional governor also disclosed that the agreement would help boost trade, as well as foster brotherliness between people of his region and Katsina.

    Speaking, Governor Aminu Bello Masari said the agreement is meant to facilitate movement of people within the two countries, enhance security and improve relationship between farmers and herders moving within their border.

    Masari, represented by his deputy, Mannir Yakubu said implementation of the agreement would drastically reduce the frequent conflicts between farmers and herders operating within their domains.

    But the Secretary to the Government of Katsina state, Mustapha Muhammad Inuwa said the agreement was made possible through the efforts of governors and officials of the two states.

    Inuwa said with the agreement, the issue of shielding criminals who cross into each others’ territory has largely been resolved, as both sides have exhibited commitment to tackling criminality.

    Ex-Gov. Lawal Kaita buried in Katsina

    The remains of the former governor of the defunct Kaduna State, Alhaji Lawal Kaita, has been buried in Katsina.

    Kaita died on Tuesday in a hospital in Abuja after a protracted illness at the age 85.

    The funeral prayer of the deceased was led by Imam Mustapha Liman at the palace of the Emir of Katsina at 2.30 p.m.

    Prominent personalities that attended the rite included a Federal Government delegation comprising the Minister of Defence, Maj.-Gen. Mansur Dan-Ali (rtd); Minister of State for Aviation, Alhaji Hadi Sirika, and Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media, Alhaji Garba Shehu.

    Others were the deputy governor of Katsina State, Alhaji Mannir Yakubu; Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Farouq, and the Lamido of Adamawa, Alhaji Barkindo Aliyu Mustapha.

    The Director-General SMEDAN, Dr Dikko Umar Radda, member House of Representatives representing Kankia/Kusada/Ingawa, Alhaji Ahmad Babba, traditional rulers and religious leaders from across the country also attended the burial.

    Kaita was buried at the old Danmarna cemetery in Katsina metropolis.

    He left behind a wife, children and grandchildren.

    The deceased was the elected governor of old Kaduna State under the National Party of Nigeria ( NPN ) between October and December 1983.

    Sallah: Katsina donates N147.9m to pilgrims

    The Katsina State Government has announced donation of N147.9 million equivalent to SRA1.5 million (Saudi Riyals) to its 4,930 pilgrims as ‘Sallah gift’ during the 2017 hajj.

    Alhaji Mannir Yakubu, the Amirul-Hajj and leader of the state government delegation to Saudi Arabia for hajj, disclosed this on Saturday while addressing the pilgrims.

    He said that each pilgrim would be given SRA 300.

    Mannir, who is also the state Deputy Governor, said that the gesture was in recognition of the pilgrims’ good behavior in the Holy land.

    He further urged the pilgrims to keep up the good efforts of positively portraying the image of the state and the country in the Holy land.

    ‘’We appreciate the good behavior exhibited by our pilgrims in the Holy land, in fact, the Saudi Arabia authority has named Nigerians as the most law abiding pilgrims during this year’s hajj, which is a welcome development,’’ he said.

    He also urged the pilgrims to continue to pray to Allah to grant Nigeria peace, unity and development.

    Mannir also prayed to Allah to accept their hajj and return them home safely.

    Fadama III: KTSG to link 73 unemployed youths to financial institutions for loans

    The Katsina State Government will link the 73 unemployed graduates who did not benefit from the N24 million National Fadama III programme to financial institutions who will offer them suitable loan packages

    Alhaji Mannir Yakubu, the State Deputy Governor, gave the assurance during the closing ceremony of the two weeks training for the selected unemployed graduates by the National Fadama (III) Programme on Saturday in Katsina.

    To the 200 successful beneficiaries, Yakubu, who was represented by Alhaji Idris Tune, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, advised them to make judicious use of the funds.

    The National Fadama III Additional Financing programme has trained 293 unemployed graduates in the state in different agricultural enterprises.

    The various enterprises includes crop production, poultry production, livestock production, fish production and Agro-business.

    “For the 73 unemployed graduates that are not selected for the provision of grant by the National Fadama III programme, the state government will link them with financial institutions to offer them suitable loan package,’’ he said.

    “I wish to draw the attention of the beneficiaries that will scale through the final selection of the National Fadama to make use of the golden opportunity to utilise the funds and resources given to them judiciously .

    “The beneficiaries should strive to produce the commodities under their respective enterprises and should train other unemployed graduates in their farms as employees,” he said.

    He said that the Federal and State governments had designed policies and programmes aimed at addressing unemployment of graduates in the country.

    Earlier in his remarks, the Fadama III National Communication Officer, Mr Bashir Safana, called on the state government to come to the aid of those who were not selected for the provision of soft loan.

    Safana said that Katsina State Government stands to benefit immensely from the training given to the 273 unemployed graduates.

    Also, the Managing Director of the Katsina Agricultural and Rural Development Agency, Alhaji Ibrahim Musawa, said that the agency would forward a request to the state government to provide employment to those that did not get the grant.

    “The state government will employ them as extension workers, the state is badly in need of extension workers.

    “The state is facing shortage of extension workers as one extension worker now provide his service to over 1000 person which is wrong “he said.

    NAN reports that the National Fadama Programme had designed the graduate unemployed training scheme with the aim of providing entrepreneurial training skills to beneficiaries with the aim of getting jobs for them.

  • Katsina govt investigates alleged misconduct by Hajj officials

    The Katsina State Government has inaugurated a committee to investigate alleged misconduct by some officials of the state’s Pilgrims Welfare Board during the 2016 Hajj in Saudi Arabia.

    Inaugurating the committee on Thursday in Katsina, the State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Mannir Yakubu, tasked the committee to discharge their duties without fear or favour.

    He expressed displeasure on the report of alleged connivance by the officials of the board to shortchange some pilgrims of their Basic Transport Allowance (BTA).

    The officials were also alleged to have diverted some accommodations meant for the state pilgrims at Makkah.

    Yakubu said the investigation was to expose and punish the culprits to serve as deterrent to others.

    The Permanent Secretary, Special Duties, Governor’s Office, Alhaji Suleiman Safana, is the chairman of the committee with representatives from the ministries of justice, religious affairs, State Audit, Katsina and Daura Emirate Councils as members.

    The committee also includes a representative from the governor’s office who will serve as secretary.

    The terms of reference of the committee include, investigating alleged fraud in the issuance of BTA to the pilgrims and unearth circumstances associated with shortage of accommodation to pilgrims at Makkah.

    Others are; to investigate alleged involvement of officials of the board in the issuance of VISA to international pilgrims through the Board and suggest measures to ensure a hitch-free exercise in subsequent years.

    He said the committee had four weeks to submit its report.
